Who passed away this summer theres not a lot of last left. Or for trump in that area so i wouldnt be surprised if we would see bidens. By then it should expand a little bit there and trump simply cannot afford to lose georgia if you looses georgies and it would be the 1st time since 1902 since both that im not in the type of state so i also be because its such a tight race i mean expect trumps team to maybe fall some lawsuits if they can somehow challenge the count there ok tell us a little bit about the timeline now because this is the 1000000. 00 question when could we see some of these states starts to close and because weve heard in the next couple of hours for example we could get some new results from pennsylvania they they apparently are are counting quite rapidly down there and what are we looking at hours days well pennsylvania said we could expect more results already by for today friday later tonight. Were looking at about 163000. 00 votes left to be counted trump is up there by 18000. 00 votes a lot of the votes still out though are you know again from urban areas so were looking at philadelphia some in pittsburgh still i think and so also and mainly i have to add also absentee malan ballots they have gone to pennsylvania so far. To bite by 70 percent so again a very realistic chance of biting could then the next couple of hours overtake trump in that state as well in georgia the announcements have been a lot more drip drip drip election workers there appear to be doing you know this very thoroughly very diligently the election official there Gabriel Sterling saying that he wants accuracy over you know being crass and get the votes out fast he also said that with the tight vote that were seeing some of these races we could be headed for a recount which means that that could take allowed out a week after the election has to be certified and a member 13th so that could land somewhere around november 20th democracy at work but it is certainly taking time. Peter going to stick with us but were going to have a look right now at the messaging that has been coming in from both campaigns joe biden has once again urged patience as the vote our votes are counted doesnt trump we saw him last night addressing the nation stating again multiple false hoods saying that he is being robbed of a 2nd term state Election Officials say there has been 0 evidence of wrongdoing. 2 days after the polls closed President Donald Trump delivered his latest broadside against the electoral system if you count the legal votes i easily win if you count the illegal votes they can try to steal. The election from us if you count the votes that came in late were looking at them very strongly but a lot of votes came in. There is no evidence of voting irregularities in the u. S. Because of the coronavirus pandemic many votes were delivered by mail delivered in the congo mainland ballots are steadily increasing the lead of democratic candidate joe biden. Seeking to stop the vote count republicans have launched lawsuits in several states once the legal battle to reach the u. S. Supreme court which leaned heavily to the right after he failed 3 of the seats with conservative justices. Who think this is going to be a lot of litigation as we have so much evidence so much proof and its going to end perhaps that the highest court in the land the president left the podium to a barrage of questions from reporters. Why are you. People about that money found a lot of the known. On the streets Trump Supporters echoed his baseless claims everything is good legitimately fairly and truthfully has already ruined my days already but theyre just calling it so they try to steal it more and more like palins biden took to the stage with a very different message so we have no doubt that when the count is tradition or harrison i will be declared the winners so i ask everyone to stay calm all the people to stay calm the process is working the count is being completed and you will know very soon so thank you all for your patience but for you have to count the votes. Bidens backers tunde out to numbers in philadelphia where vote are still being counted because american democracy is that red and we have them and administration who is stated. Both planes that they are going to make you know that your adult the next election and training deal be allowed to bring what i believe to be the correct way to. Philadelphia ballots could tip the balance in pennsylvania and deliver the presidency to biden. Its me just a target of extremists please stop the group of armed group trump conspiracy theorists suspected of planning an attack on the counting center it seems no matter the verdict of the voters the divisions in the country will persist long after the counting is done. So peter we have trump questioning the legitimacy of the selection questioning the democracy in the United States have we ever seen this before from a u. S. President and why is he doing it or not to this extent in you know recent history this is truly unprecedented what most. Both sides of the read on for decades has been that if you know that these democratic elections in the process is sacrosanct if you start chipping away at that that fundamentally roach believes in the keep pillar of america which is democracy so you know why trump is doing what hes doing i think only trump truly knows a qualified guess would be that you know were looking at these. Were looking at a president who is very much looking like a one term president now. Its not looking great the braces shifting decisively rapidly in bidens favor and trump is someone who is not great at ups acting and who does not like to think of himself as someone who loses he used to tell his base during the after he was reelected that you know if were going to win so much were going to get tired of winning that seems to be changing right now and so by casting doubt on the integrity of the election it seems like hes trying to say face me to some extent compare that with what were hearing from biden and his campaign right biden has been calling for calm hes calling for patience and above all hes been calling for people to trust the process. And frankly it does sound in percent and self right now more as a man who believes hes winning. And not just sounding like hes winning but also sending more president ial to some extent by respecting these institutions and also acting to a large extent more like one who is trying to hold the nation together at a very fractious time hes also been getting Intelligence Briefings for instance on a daily basis about the state of the nation and demick so you know doing a lot of the work that a sitting president should be doing at this moment and the results have been so narrow i mean we are seeing that just you know for example and georgia where weve seen the latest movement what does that say about where the country is right now the fact that youre seeing such a substantial portion of the population latch on to 2 very different messages as well. Its says i think that this country is whoever becomes president is going to you know inherit a incredibly divided country a deeply entrenched polarized country where you know im reminded of 2004 when then broke obama gave the keynote speech at the Democratic National convention is that there are no red states or no blue states or only the United States of america the current election map does not seem to reflect that. Red states have gotten better blue states or gotten blue or no matter who wins i think one of their Top Priorities has to be to try to unite the country to be the president for all of america not going to be very tough considering that neither site right now is willing to accept the other side as legitimate funeral at all thank you thank you. Well its not only people in the u. S. Of course who are anxiously waiting to find out who is going to be the next president europe is watching very closely lets bring in now christina bears enough from the German Marshall Fund in brussels shes a senior fellow at the alliance for securing democracy theyre welcome to the program and thank you for joining us as weve been discussing here trump has called the integrity of the electoral process into question what is the state of democracy in the u. S. Right now. And thank you have for having me i mean when you look at the state of democracy in the u. S. Right now you see 2 Different Things you see on the one hand a very smoothly steadily Progressive Democratic process an election process something thats very important to understand the Election Results are coming in slowly because of the way that americans voted this year tremendous number of absentee ballots of mail in ballots early voting all of that has created a different landscape than we have ever seen before in the United States and the stone laws that we have in place across the u. S. Many of those votes cannot be counted until election day themselves which is why we are on friday and we still do not have a full ballot tallying in states like pennsylvania or nevada where were still looking for these results and georgia as well so when you look at the democratic process the process of the elections the technical side its progressing exactly as it should slowly but thats what people anticipated in advance of the election and what were seeing today we also anticipated that many of the in person voters on election day would be more from the republican side and we have seen that democrats have sent in more mail in ballots than republicans have in many places because of this weve seen this change on the other hand we see the president s rhetoric and so we have to balance the president s rhetoric against what were seeing in terms of voting process and the rhetoric is alarming and i think the u. S. And europe and in particular are doing a good job of doing that and lets talk a little bit more about that because id like to ask you when youre sitting here in europe right now. Our leaders here are people encouraged that the process in the United States is working i mean is that is that really a balloon for people who are looking on in on this or is the level of concern that one has based on the message that we are hearing from the presidency sort of trumping all. I think the european leaders have gone into this with a great deal of understanding that this is going to be a longer process than usual so i think from the leadership side generally were seeing also a wait and see approach resilience patience this libyan Prime Minister came out with a very early congratulations to president translate that came as a different from others that you have seen many member state media and among others talking about a os in the United States that is perhaps alarming and some ways and maybe not a perfect representation of what is going on but again generally there is a sense a wait and see and an explanation of that by european media to european audiences although there are certain places such as poland which is taking president trumps words i his allegations of fraud much more literally we have seen in other countries and other leaders also take that with us skepticism and understanding of the invalidity of president s trumps words but in places where you have very allied governments such as poland perhaps theres less of that nuance being presented to the people very fascinating to see how europe is looking on and on all of this christine barzee now from the German Marshall Fund in brussels thank you so much for joining us to share that expertise. Well police in germany are carrying out raids in connection with mondays terror attack in the austrian capital vienna according to the federal Prosecutors Office homes. Brooke and casa are being combed for possible evidence and ties to islamist extremist circles the 20 year old assailant was shot dead by police after killing 4 people austrian authorities here that International Anti terror units are cooperating in the best occasion putting the f. B. I. In the u. S. Lets get more from Political CorrespondentThomas Sparrow who is standing by for us in berlin thomas is it fair to assume that there are people in germany suspected of involvement in the vienna attack not direct involvement according to German Authorities the goal of the raids today sorrow was to try and find evidence because there are certain links between the alleged perpetrator of vienna and people here in germany in those 3 locations that you mentioned again the keyword here is those links were talking about for people that are being investigated there were no arrests but they are investigating those 4 people in particular 2 of them are said to have met the alleged perpetrator in vienna in the summer and the other 2 have had contact with the alleged perpetrator according to authorities online the goal here was to try and get evidence in those 3 locations this does not come as a as a surprise in fact interior minister horst zehava had said yesterday during a debate in parliament that that could have been those links between the alleged perpetrator and people here in germany and he also stressed that the situation here in germany is very serious and hence the necessity the need to cooperate with alston counterpart to try and find all that information that is needed to understand the background and all the Key Information about what happened in vienna earlier this week what does he need very serious how high is the risk of a terrorist attack. It is high again that this is something that he didnt say for the 1st time yesterday and German Parliament he referred to 615 potential perpetrators here in germany and he stressed the importance of fighting the possibility of an attack here in germany he said an attack could actually happen any time to germany should be prepared for that and that authorities are actually preparing accordingly he stressed and this is particularly important again the need to understand this phenomenon not just something that is only national for example now or still france previously but are something where cooperation across borders is needed and in particular cooperation within the European UnionThomas Sparrow in berlin thank you. And Germanys Health minister says that the countrys Health Care System could soon be overwhelmed if its covert case low isnt brought under control bonde was speaking as germany topped the mark of 20000 new daily infections for the 1st time the virus is hitting many european states even harder now than it did earlier this year. A new somber record for germany the highest number of daily covered 1000 cases ever registered in the country germany is in its 1st week of a new partial lockdown restaurants bars and leisure activities are shut down travel for tourism is strongly discouraged well shops and schools are allowed to stay open. Germanys Health Minister yes spahn said the countrys Health Care System is not currently overwhelmed but hard times are ahead if the rise in cases isnt stopped. The situation is serious the number of people requiring support in intensive care units has doubled in the past 10 days from as of today our Health System is still coping but even the best system in the world cannot cope with a doubling every 10 days. After the growth rate is very strong and we must break it together. Even germanys extensive Testing Capacity is under pressure lets say they are struggling to keep up with demand but there is confidence that the current shutdown will help bring the number of cases back down the numbers that we see today or affect the situation a week ago because we have been conditioned period the numbers are slightly slightly improved we have to be optimistic because the reproduction number is below one and i think thats the 1st signs things might get better here in our country in berlin people are taking reports of the record case rise in their stride many say they are learning to live with the virus and the restrictions. We see that even with restrictions in place the numbers still go up we just try to live with it now to cope with the situation i dont think about it any more than usual. Its pretty shocking i mean i think governments of every country are doing the best they can i dont think theres any right or wrong. I would go to people in the vaccines and i certainly believe that would help. Next week chancellor Angela Merkel and the federal state leaders are expected to meet to take stock of the situation and decide whether to introduce tougher restrictions something most here in germany are hoping to avoid. And thats every action now from nina hasa who is joining us from berlin nina how bad is the situation in germany. And spawn the Health Minister has said himself that the situation is indeed extremely serious he did speak about the i. C. U. And we heard him that saying that they situation just cant go on if we have this rate for another month or so then all the ice you use will be filled up but he also urged people not to forget all the other people who are impacted by the coronavirus hand and its current exponential growth he says also lets not forget about the other people who cant have surgery at the moment because all the i. C. U. Beds. Reserved for coronavirus patients he was of course i recently also you know in the past month diagnosed himself with corona virus so i mean hes hes personally familiar with the disease now he is promoting proposals to revise the countrys protection against infection act he talked a lot about that in the speech what to the proposals include. Well the big question is how do you make sure that the measures that the German Government state treme is that they adopt against the coronavirus how do you make sure that they are not overruled by courts in the days that come after those announcements because that is something that we have seen here we must remember of course the German Government in berlin cant just adopt nationwide measures against the coronavirus like maybe other governments can around the world instead this is a federal process until americal sits down together with the state treme is and they decide for themselves on the regional level mostly but then local courts go ahead and they react to complaints that have been filed and then they overrule some of those decisions and we saw that for example when the senate here in berlin try to impose a curfew on bars and the local pub owners went to the courts and so this is something that spawn is very very particular meticulous about he really wants those measures to be respected and to have the legal basis which is why theres a new law it specifies certain measures that can be adopted nationwide so that would be legally founded so the courts couldnt go against it for example nina hoss and berlin thank you. Now many countries are seeing covert cases outstripping the number of cases they experienced when the pandemic arrived earlier this year some populations have accepted the return of restrictions on public life elsewhere and there is growing pushback what tests come to be known as lock down 50. Milans lockdown begins on friday its just one of the areas in the red zone which brings with it the strictest rules residents will only be allowed to leave their homes for work to exercise or to shop for essential over a quarter of italys population mostly in the north are affected. The government believes a rapidly rising virus numbers have left them no will turn to if. We understand the discomfort this causes its causing psychological suffering but we must resist working to mitigate the negative effects these restrictions have on the economy on citizens incomes on society. After the large number of deaths and months long lockdown in the spring theres a level of understanding on the streets of milan. Kaname and health dont go well together the virus is here but we also need to think about the shopkeepers. John the. Sea and the measures overall are appropriate lets get through this now as well as we can. Meanwhile in englands clashes broke out between revelers and the police in some cities on the evening before a 4 week lockdown from thursday restaurants pubs shops except for essential supplies and gyms have been closed schools universities under nurseries remain open we dont want it to go back to quiet before theyre not ready for that it might be forced into it but i government is so undecided about what its going to do. The bank of england has said it will do everything it can to support the economy its increased its Economic Stimulus Program by an additional 166000000000. 00 euros measures that are unlikely to brighten.
