Has 20 electoral votes should biden pull ahead here and when the states he would of he would have crossed over the magic number of 270 Electoral College votes so that means he would he would win the election. Trump is still ahead by a little bit but its mail in voting ballots that are still being counted that favor joe biden and some of them are coming from the philadelphia area which is also a democratic leaning. Area and so that would mean that biden could pull ahead here and were expecting more numbers from there soon lets talk about the further numbers that are expected we also know from philadelphia that you just mentioned also know that georgia 99 percent of the vote counted and that is really quite a lot given all of this when could we expect to bristle at sort of timeline could we be looking. Well that is of course what everyone is wondering and the short answer is we dont know exactly some numbers and some states as you mentioned are very close to having all ballots counted. Some people say might have already been counted had it not been for a burst pipe in Fulton County which is where atlanta is so they really should be inching closer now that that has been fixed. North carolina for example is still accepting ballots that were postmarked on election day until november 12th nevada till november 10th so we might know later today but also it could still be a few days thank you. Have a closer look at the message that has been coming in from the candidates now joe biden once again urging patience as the votes are counted donald trump addressed the nation meantime last night stating multiple false hits and saying that he is being robbed of a 2nd term the Charm Campaign has launched legal action in some states alleging fraud in an effort to stop the counting there state Election Officials say theres been 0 evidence of wrongdoing. 2 days after the polls closed President Donald Trump delivered his latest broadside against the electoral system. If you count the legal votes i easily won and if you count the illegal votes they can try to steal. The election from us if you count the votes that came in late were looking at them very strongly but a lot of votes came in. There is no evidence of voting irregularities in the u. S. Because of the coronavirus pandemic many votes were delivered by mail delivered to congress meal and ballots are steadily increasing the lead of democratic candidate joe biden. Seeking to stop the vote count republicans have launched lawsuits in several states once the legal battle to reach the u. S. Supreme court which leaned heavily to the right after he failed 3 of the seats with conservative justices. Do we think theres going to be a lot of litigation as we have so much evidence so much proof and its going to end perhaps that the highest court in the land the president left the podium to a barrage of questions from reporters. Why are you. People about that man he found a lot of the known. On the streets Trump Supporters echoed his baseless claims that everything is good legitimist leave fairly and truthfully has already ruined my days already but theyre just calling it so they try to steal it more and more pilots biden took to the stage with a very different message so we have no doubt that when the count is tradition or harrison i will be declared the winners so i ask everyone to stay calm all the people stay calm the process is work the count is being completed and well know very soon so thank you all for your patience but we have to count the votes. Bidens bakos tunde out to numbers in philadelphia where vote are still being counted because american democracy is a red and we have them and administration who is stated. Boldly that they are going to make you know that youre dealt the next election and Training Field the election from what i believe to be the correct way to. Philadelphia ballots could tip the balance in pennsylvania and deliver the presidency to biden but with the legitimacy of the vote being disputed by trump the divisions in the country will persist long after the counting is done. And joining me now here in the studio it is peter while a dollar has been following all of this from the very beginning for us peter lets drill down into some of these messages will begin 1st with trump casting doubt on the legitimacy. Of the entire election have we seen this before why is he doing it i think in a lot of ways this is one project unprecedented what were seeing right now i mean even Richard Nixon ultimately ended up spending the process and put this debility of the nation ahead of of his own interest. You know why trump is doing what hes doing is a question that a lot of people a lot smarter than me have been asking themselves for the past couple years. I think ultimately only trump knows but i think paul if i guess is that you know based on the current map trump is not looking like a 2 term president the race is shifting as we heard there decisively and quite rapidly towards biden. Trump is someone who used to tell his base when he was elected you know were going to win so much that youre going to be tired of winning right now that does not seem to be the case and so by casting doubt on the integrity of the election it looks like hes to some extent trying to save face. Oh warning maybe fur trump i think it we seen him you know calling republican governors trying to put pressure on a lot of local republicans also to have them up the pressure on. You know the election offices there but this is not just about trump this election the republicans have had a fairly good election and won a lot of seats in the local and state level congressional level to make their votes without me their victories are legitimate as well would make trumps victory illegitimate if you and i can tell youre trying to find the logic and bravo for you to me for making that attempt to compare and contrast what we have been hearing from trump and his party with what we are hearing from the other side from biden which is very much a message of calm of patience and where which message has the nation right now seem to be latching on to as it waits for these results right i think the thing is that we are seeing you know weve seen Trump Supporters sensually campout outside of election offices of some of these polling stations where theyre being counted the votes we havent quite seen the same response from biden so i think. Their individual or their responses very much reflect the division that were seeing you know you set there biden is in a lot of ways call for calm hes told essentially his supporters to trust the process and that does appear to be what a lot of them are currently doing. I say on top of that biden currently sounds more like a man who knows hes winning hes not just sounding more president ial i think to some extent hes also acting more like incoming president hes getting Intelligence Briefings on the situation in the country also was special with regards to the pandemic so hes doing a lot of the work that a sitting president would normally. That he normally would and should be doing at this point it is been so interesting to see just how close some of these counts are in states and weve seen for example georgia 99 percent of the counted and it is a difference of hundreds of votes peter i mean clearly you know the message from both of these candidates which is so divergent so different is resonating with substantial parts of the population on both sides what does that say about where the country is right now. I think it says out on the one hand its a deeply divided country its also deeply entrenched country im reminded of 2004 you may remember that famous keynote speech that president obama gave out the president at the Democratic National convention that really you know rocket into the National Stage and made him a you know political icon he said that there was no red states and there are no blue states theres only the United States of america the current election map i think does not really reflect that message. The red states appears to have gotten redder the bluer states the blue states appear to have gotten bluer and so you know no matter who wins i think one of their Top Priorities going to be to have to try to unite the country to be a president for all of america and thats going to be very tough considering that neither side currently considers the other side legitimate and that that that trend toward polarization just keeps getting deeper and deeper and deeper in the us to use peter all the dollars analyzing all of this for us thank you thank you well its not only people in the u. S. Of course who are anxiously waiting to find out who is going to be the next president europe is watching very closely lets bring in now christina bears enough from the German Marshall Fund in brussels shes a senior fellow at the alliance for securing democracy theyre welcome to the program and thank you for joining us as weve been discussing here trump has called the integrity of the electoral process into question what is the state of democracy in the u. S. Right now. Thank you have for having me ending when you look at the state of democracy in the u. S. Right now you see 2 Different Things you see on the one hand a very smoothly steadily progressing democratic process an election process something thats very important to understand the Election Results are coming in slowly because of the way that americans voted this year tremendous number of absentee ballots of mail in ballots early voting all of that has created a different landscape than we have ever seen before in the United States and the stone laws that we have in place across the u. S. Many of those votes cannot be counted until election day themselves which is why we are on friday and we still do not have a full ballot tallying in states like pennsylvania or nevada where were still looking for these results and georgia as well so when you look at the democratic process the process of the elections the technical side its progressing exactly as it should slowly but thats what people anticipated in advance of the election and what were seeing today we also anticipated that many of the in cursing voters on election day would be more for the republican side and we have seen that democrats have sent in more mail in ballots than republicans have in many places because of this weve seen this change on the other hand we see the president s rhetoric and so we have to balance the president s rhetoric against what were seeing in terms of voting process and the rhetoric is alarming and i think the u. S. And europe and in particular are doing a good job of. That and lets talk a little bit more about that because id like to ask you when youre sitting here in europe right. Our leaders here are people encouraged that the process in the United States is working i mean is that is that really a boon for people who are looking on in on this or is the level of concern that one has based on the message that were hearing from the presidency sort of trumping all. I think the european leaders have gone into this with a great deal of understanding that this is going to be a longer process than usual so i think from the leadership side generally were seeing also a wait and see approach resilience patience the slovenian Prime Minister came out with a very early congratulations to President Trumpet that came as a different from others you have seen many member state media and among others talking about the a os in the United States i mean that is perhaps alarming and some ways and maybe not a perfect representation of what is going on but again generally there is a sense a wait and see and an explanation of that by european media yet to european audiences although there are certain places such as poland which is taking President Trumps words his allegations of fraud much more literally we have seen in other countries and other leaders also take that with us skepticism and understanding of the invalidity of president s trumps words but in places where you have very allied governments such as poland perhaps theres less of that nuance being presented to the people very fascinating to see how europe is looking on and on all of this christine Brazilian Air from the German Marshall Fund in brussels thank you so much for joining us to share that expertise. You so much. Well police in germany are carrying out raids in connection with mondays terror attack in the austrian capital of vienna according to the federal Prosecutors Office holmes in pine a barrack a stupor and castle are being combed for possible evidence and ties to islam is extremist circles the 20 year olds assailant was shot dead by police after killing 4 people austrian Authorities Say that International Anti terror units are cooperating in the investigation including the f. B. I. Us. Lets get more from Political Correspondent Thomas Sparrow who is standing by for us in berlin thomas is it fair to assume that there are people in germany suspected of involvement in the vienna attack not direct involvement according to German Authorities the goal of the raids today sorrow was to try and find evidence because there are certain links between the alleged perpetrator of vienna and people here in germany in those 3 locations that you mentioned again the keyword here is those links were talking about for people that are being investigated there were no arrests but they are investigating those 4 people in particular 2 of them are said to have met the alleged perpetrator in vienna in the summer and the other 2 have had contact with the alleged perpetrator according to authorities online the goal here was to try and get evidence in those 3 locations this does not come as a as a surprise in fact interior minister horst zehava had said yesterday during a debate in parliament that that could have been those links between the alleged perpetrator and people here in germany and he also stressed that the situation here in germany is very serious and hence the necessity the need to cooperate with austrian counterpart to try and find all that information that is needed to understand the background and all the Key Information about what happened in vienna earlier this week what does he need very serious how high is the risk of a terrorist attack. It is high again that this is something that he didnt say for the 1st time yesterday in the German Parliament he referred to 615 potential perpetrators here in germany and he stressed the importance of fighting the possibility of an attack here in germany he said an attack could actually happen any time to germany should be prepared for that and that authorities are actually preparing accordingly he stressed and this is particularly important again the need to understand this phenomenon not just something that is only national for example now austria or france previously but as something where cooperation across borders is needed and in particular cooperation within the European Union Thomas Sparrow in berlin thank you thank turning now to the corona virus pandemic germany has for the 1st time surpassed more than 20000 in sections in a day more than 21 and a half 1000 infections were recorded within the past 24 hours 14 to data released on friday 116 people died from covert 1000 in the past day pushing the death toll in germany beyond 11000 on infections are increasing the reproduction rate of the virus is declining that means the virus is spread to slowing down a trend authorities hope will continue now that the country has reintroduced lockdown measures. In the countrys Health Minister has raised the alarm over the pandemics effects on hospitals told lawmakers that the bundestag that before long the rising caseload could overpower Germanys Health care system the log is just this situation is serious the number of people requiring support in intensive care units has doubled in the past 10 days turned over to as of today our Health System is still coping. But even the best system in the world cant cope with a doubling every 10 days this growth rate is too strong and we must break it together in some regions. And thats covering the action now from you know who is joining us from berlin nina how bad is the situation in germany in spawn the Health Minister has said himself that the situation is indeed extremely serious he did speak about the i. C. U. News and we heard him that saying that they situation just cant go on if we have this rate for another month or so then all the i. C. U. Use will be filled up but he also people not to forget all the other people who are impacted by the coronavirus hand and its current exponential growth he says also lets not forget about the other people who cant have surgery at the moment because all the i. C. U. Beds. Reserved for coronavirus patients he was of course i recently also you know in the past month diagnosed himself with corona virus so i mean hes hes personally familiar with the disease now he is promoting proposals to revise the countrys protection against infection act he talked a lot about that in the speech what do the proposals include. Well the big question is how do you make sure that the measures that the German Government state treme is that they adopt against the coronavirus how do you make sure that they are not overruled by courts in the days that come after those announcements because that is something that we have seen here we must remember of course the German Government in berlin cant just adopt nationwide measures against the coronavirus like maybe other governments can and run the world instead this is a federal process until a medical sits down together with the state treme is and they decide for themselves on the regional level mostly but then local courts go ahead and they react to complaints that have been filed and then they overrule some of those decisions and we saw that for example when the senate here in berlin try to impose a curfew on boz and the local pub owners went to the courts and so this is something that spawn is very very particular meticulous about he really wants those measures to be respected and to have the legal bases which is why theres a new law it specifies certain measures that can be adopted nationwide so that would be legally founded so the courts couldnt go against it for example nina hoss and berlin thank you. So many countries of course around the world are seeing covert 1000 cases outstripping the number of cases that they experienced when the pentameter arrived earlier this year some populations have accepted the return of restrictions on public life but elsewhere theres been growing pushback just come to be known as lock down 50. Milans lockdown begins on friday its just one of the areas in the red zone which brings with it the strictest rules residents will only be allowed to leave their homes for work to exercise or to shop for essential over a quarter of italys population mostly in the north are affected. The government believes rapidly rising virus numbers have left them no will turn to if. We understand the discomfort this causes its causing psychological suffering but we must resist working to mitigate the negative effects these restrictions have on the economy on citizens incomes on society. After the large number of deaths and months long lockdown in the spring theres a level of understanding on the streets of milan. Kaname and health dont go well together the virus is here but we also need to think about the shopkeepers. John the. Sea and the measures overall are appropriate lets get through this now as well as we can. Meanwhile in england clashes broke out between revelers and the police in some cities on the evening before a 4 week lockdown from thursday restaurants pubs shops except for essential supplies and gyms have been closed schools universities under nurseries remain open we dont want it to go back to quiet before theyre not ready for that it might be forced into it but i government is so undecided about what its going to do. The bank of england has said it will do everything it can to support the economy its increased its Economic Stimulus Program by an additional 166000000000. 00 euros measures that are unlikely to brighten. A gloomy economic picture. This is g. W. News a lie from berlin a reminder of our top story vote counting continues in several battleground u. S. States with still no confirmed winner in the race for the white house joe biden has pulled ahead in the tally in georgia dealing President Trump a major setback meantime in his 1st appearance since Election Night trump last night again slamming mail in voting which is mostly used by democrats. Reconcile this bitterly divided nation trump all by can americas next leader heal the country or has the divide between the 2 americas become a base that will finally mark an end to what was often known as the American Century on to the points we asked trump all by how divided the United States. Thanks very much for joining us my guest today here in the studio are Soraya Sarhaddi nelson from k c w radio. Who says the results show how disconnected American Voters are from be jhumpa and from politicians pollsters and journalists. Also with us is mostly secret freelance journalist and currently a fellow at the American Academy here in burlington he argues that a deadly pandemic moments of racial upheaval and scandal after scandal have done little to diminish trumps popularity. And a warm welcome to to Matthew Carney its new chief europe correspondent for politico who believes whoever wins in the end the result shows that neither candidate or party has a clear convincing mandate. Thank you all 3 for being here great stuff id like to begin with you sariah america has voted to walk one leading financial broadsheet cold a big us election that resolves little seemed like an option fair description of where we are do you agree absolutely and it could become pounded depending on the congressional make up got it very hard to get anything done and there are just so many varying narratives or varying agenda you know its going to be very hard for the next president to be able to latch on to those specified. Joe biden who has said that hes going to bring the country back together why are we still waiting for a result the heart of it is because its an historic turnout i mean the numbers are just huge including the mailed in ballots which of course have depending on the state have some time left before they can be counted so all of that when you have a system that is largely handled by volunteers in 50 different states with 50 different systems you know it takes time to count them up. Whos going to with. The tough question. We as we speak now. Biden has taken taken back michigan wisconsin. And appears poised to win nevada and arizona he seems to have the clearest path towards 270. 00 Electoral College votes you talk about a clear path but it is a system that doesnt really appear to work for europeanize why is it so complicated. We have to look to the form of the constitution for that i think but we have an Electoral College system. That for whatever reason is weighted toward parts of the country that are less populous and so it often does happen that. The greater number of people vote for the candidate who has the fewer number of Electoral College votes and weve seen that in previous elections and i think i just want to run that question by you why you know why is this is them still in place the Electoral College nobody really understands its in the postal vote isnt it sort of an opportunity to kohl for old you know well i think a couple things 1st about i would argue that the Electoral College system does work and has worked for over 230 years it has happened in the past it happened in 2000 and it happened in 2016 that the candidate who won the most votes did not win the election but the point of the Electoral College system is to have a regional balance in the country and its important to remember that the United States is twice as big as the European Union in terms of its geography its a country of 300000000 people more than 300000000 people and they wanted to avoid a system the framers didnt i think that they could sort of sense this was going to happen back then even that the country was going to expand westward and they wanted to avoid a situation where you had Large Population centers determining who was going to run the federal government it is its a federal system like. Germany and they tried to create this balance barack obama won 2 terms as president with the Electoral College and with the majority of the votes and i think that if joe biden wins. Today or in the coming days that this talk about doing away with the with the Electoral College Electoral College will probably dissipate i think that the big problem this time was because of the pandemic you have many more mail in ballots than we normally do thats one problem the other problem is that the president of the United States is aggressively so actually guilty of these militants so fascinating background but it you know youre giving the impression of all is growing and rosy in the u. S. A couple of days after an election where were still reading about hands and saying where the heck is this going now but i think it is normal in the american system and i think its not normal to europeanize as as you said its not but the fact is that the responsibility for elections in the United States lies with the 50 individual states and they are allowed to structure those elections in the way that they want there are a surprise said mainly volunteers who are working here to count the votes it is actually i think its very positive for democracy because it is a grassroots effort and when when people see as we saw this morning in my home state of arizona sort of groups of people out in front of the building where theyre counting the votes waiting trump flags and you know theyre carrying guns as a lot of people in arizona do anyway that you know tends to worry a lot of european viewers i think american viewers and a very good news but i do think that it is also maybe a little bit part of the kind of circus atmosphere that often surrounds american elections well i dont agree about the Electoral College i do think that that will remain a Sticking Point as somebody who is a california voter i mean i feel disenfranchised frankly by the system that is very antiquated that was created 2030 years ago and i think with the with what weve seen with this election with the mail in ballots the overwhelming you know the ability to do voting in different ways on that ill ever. The ideal was between behind the Electoral College was to make sure that all states were represented but you can reach the voters now were not talking about going by horseback to you know some polling station god knows where you know fighting all kinds of dangerous elements although theyre still dangerous in some places nowadays when you want to vote but but i do think that theyre going to i mean that theres going to be pressure to end this i really dont its just a very strange system when you have a popular vote that goes for a candidate and then they still cant be elected because the electoral. College system is what prevails ok just one second i mean i think it is fair to say the of the complications of the system were partly what prompted President Trump to come out and make his extraordinary speech claiming to be the winner of the poll lets listen into that cement talk about a little bit we want a load to be used in a proper manner so well be going to the u. S. Supreme court we want all voting just. We dont want them to find any ballots at 4 oclock in the morning and that the list ok. Its the city. Is a very sad moment to me this is a very sad moment and. We will win this is far as im concerned we already have. Most of your take on what was going on with the president and what was his message. What i hear from the president s words is someone who has path to victory has narrowed but who seems intent on riling up his base to do god knows what to preserve. His voice in the Public Discourse as biden kind of interest closer closer to victory. Theres a lot of talk among journalists and pundits about framing the narrative and a lot of people have been saying it theyd see it sort of framing the narrative of. What socratic narrative is not how it feels to you i mean the president comes out and says you know he almost himself declares himself would have since when does one guy choose the president of the United States we talk about challenges to democracy a kind of naked appeal to stop counting votes of american registered voters does seem to be leaning to me towards. Kind of authority tarion. Kind of rule various things that hes done to to kind of stoke violence at the polls to to call out people who. Show up at the polls with with their arms on display appears to me to be something that is that is a guess totally against what we consider a working democracy a president ial 2 in the making some say regardless of whether donald trump you know wins another time in office or not is not cheap talk is that extreme talk i think its expel little bit extreme i mean i do think that the United States has systems in place to prevent one man from sort of staying in the white house i mean even though we may see that the visual putting up of barriers around the white house i thought that was very symbolic i mean. It wasnt intended that way but maybe it was intended that way but i honestly dont think that i mean you know he donald trump talks the way donald trump talks thats part of his appeal you know hes seen as a leader by his followers and i think thats meant for them when he says that whether it even lets say for a moment he does want to stay and will stay no matter what i dont think those around him are going to allow that to happen because of the institutions including the Supreme Court well i agree and i think its interesting that he actually referred to the Supreme Court in that clip so even he respects the authority of the Supreme Court here i dont believe at all that the Supreme Court is going to just rubber stamp whatever he wants it to do and its not even clear what he would be asking them or what he would be challenging and again its worth remembering that this situation is not in his hands now its in the hands of the states where these ballots are being counted its their authority the federal government has no authority over them loses the count is he going to go i think hell go absolutely hell go and i think. It will be as easy as that because even people in his own party the leader of the republicans in the Senate Mitch Mcconnell said of course were going to have a normal transition of power just like weve had since the founding of the republic theres no reason to think that we wouldnt do that and i think that many republicans actually the sort of Establishment Republicans would be happy to see him go you know i mean they they they dont seem to be particularly happy with his with his style either and the other thing is that theyve already got most of what they wanted they have control the Supreme Court now they have control more or less of the federal judiciary i think they would be more than happy to see the back of donald trump interesting lets try and capture the mood of the time by listening to 4 american voices. Im here to support our president i think you know. This because right at all. Credible dobby i am very frightened for america very bright i love our democracy i love america and i know it has nothing to do with the party i just want somebody to look after american. Very important. Chump is doing nothing for us so that hes going to have anything more on the control than what. Trump does i followed voted for the greatest president in history donald j. Sharon. The best president s in history donald trump what saw his signal achievements. Changing the way president s talk i mean i dont know hes been hes been able to shake up Transatlantic Relations hes been able to to bring back some of the jobs that he said he was going to bring up i mean i dont want to sound like a trump the french but but he has definitely left a mark on not just america but the world and i dont think thats going away its not being swept away into the trash bin of history as monica hesse wrote in the Washington Post but thats why people also vote for him because of these accomplishments which i think you know often get get lost in the interest of the american that the accomplishments you had a plurality a plurality of a compass months that im interested yeah i think this is you know exactly why his voters are coming back why his base really wants him to remain he cut taxes dramatically. He he also did away with a lot of regulations that was good for the Business Community he raised military spending dramatically these are all things that he promised to do in the campaign of 2016 hes taking a tough stance on trade with china now we have might all think that these are not good policies or many many people might think that it you know that these are are are are wrongheaded but this is exactly what he promised to do and he he followed through also promised to bring the deficit down to 0 and that hasnt gone so well because the country has a higher debt than it ever has mostly to feel comfortable with and its a lot. Its difficult for me to to hear those accomplishments and not think about. Children of migrant families who were separated at the border and not think about. Trumps open acknowledgement of White Nationalist groups and not think about the kind of voice of voices of the voice of support that he gave to White Nationalists in charlottesville. Theres just so many things that i see as a point. Really that make it difficult for me to. To consider those policies as as were supporting. Yeah im more inclined to mosey said i mean i think that yes while he did bring more spending to the military what hes done to nato for example and moving of troops and even like with afghanistan this forcing through of the peace talks that are not necessarily going anywhere i think thats a real you know issue or problem and so i dont think that the changes hes brought i mean you know that with the tax cuts and everything thats fine he has done that he has made a change that i think we will feel for for many decades to come but i dont think that these werent necessarily successes is that this is a subjective analysis and im just saying objectively speaking if youre trying to understand why so many people have voted for him why you know essentially half of america is still supporting donald trump its because when they look at what he did and i forgot to mention the judges on the
