Whats wrong with the cars they have 0 exhaust are good for the climate surely there are good things. About making cars with huge ranges except that those cars are carrying batteries which are almost one turn in weight 900 kilo batteries and batteries have a very dark side. The production of those batteries involves a lot of electricity generated from coal. Production requires so much c o 2 that youd need to drive a car for years before it starts to become a net c o 2 save or. If one really needs the mobility and Battery Powered cars you 1st have to check that those batteries are small and light and the other cars are too you cant model them on combustion cars. But do german manufacturers fare better with their ecar. Ive talked to a lot of major german car makers. Actually pressing to know was how for years. Theyve looked at tesla as the standard to follow. Uses his bicycle as often as he can he wants to see more small vehicles like this one but many drivers arent convinced people often want big cars and status symbols how can we stop that habit. When its something that has to end there are sound options out there that are modern and now enjoy widespread acceptance like car sharing. The former green peace activist even says certain gasoline powered cars could be an option like this he had converted to a low consumption 30 years ago. Taken this development a step further and smaller and lighter cars with state of the art Combustion Engine technology. We now have small that city cars. Are likely needing just one and a half liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. That would have helped to minimize the problem is still there. But even a leader and a half is too much if were serious about ending our dependence on fossil fuels and while one of the big selling points for ecards is that they help reduce harmful Greenhouse Gas emissions is still a serious hitch or to making the batteries to Power Electric vehicles still involves some not so environmentally friendly processes so how green cars really ecards use Raw Materials mined in south america the democratic republic of congo and china these include lithium cobalt and where earth is needed in their batteries. Admittedly extracting and transporting these materials is an environmental nightmare often carried out under inhumane conditions but their reserves are abundant studies show that worldwide deposits of these materials can meet demand for years to come. One good thing ecards dont emit Greenhouse Gases although manufacturing them certainly does. All their parts still have to be produced but the power train only has 200. 00 parts as opposed to a Combustion Engines 1200. 00. Whether electricity comes from is another huge issue renewable sources or fossil fuels the good news is that the share of green energy is growing which definitely plays in their favor. Until now its been easy to overlook the problems with electric vehicles because theyre still only in the market last year they had market share in wide cost sales was just 2. 6 percent but look at it this way that market share more than tripled between 20112018 china is the Largest Global market accounting for 1202900 followed by the us germany takes place at just over 100000 followed by norway and the u. K. The german comic is a late comer has to be mobility now theyre trying to catch up with tesla well they succeed by colleagues. Paid a visit to the Worlds Largest combat a factory to see how theyre coping. Its a fine day for a drive in the countryside i can get this fully electric v. W. I. V. 3 to 100 kilometers an hour inside 8 seconds but im not doing this just for fun i want to know whether folks wagons can hold their own against tesla sedans. Teslas model 3 tops the global ecar sales charts this commercial goes so far as to suggest that germans have doubts about their own industries ability to produce competitive models that big and that big think. For d this and it. Is that really the case. Lets make a little comparison. Test those model 3 is more of a family car and the companys least expensive model though not yet available in europe it costs the equivalent of 43000 euros and has a range of 415 kilometers. This idea 3 compact ive borrowed from folks wagon costs around 7000. 00 euros less than its u. S. Rival. Charging its empty battery with enough power to drive 100 kilometers takes just 10 minutes longer than charging the tesla. But theres a difference. The id 3 cant quite cover the same distance as teslas model 3 though again its a lot cheaper. So how is v. W. Preparing to take on the competition. Its speak out plant in eastern germany has been converted to 100 percent electric car production. That manufactures the id 3 and latest. The id 4 its a Global Market offensive. Through and we have to produce 1350. 00 vehicles and in the future we want to make 1580. 00 cars per day that is then 300000. 00 electric cars per year it could soon overtake teslas entire output but isnt v. W. A bit slow off the mark on the immobility front. Side in terms of development the timing was just right for us. Now well be able to produce vehicles in large volume. I remember something similar being said about s. U. V. S people asking v. W. Are you a little late but then as now we were spot on with the timing the technology was ready so we could move on to mass production. In northern germany is the headquarters of the worlds biggest automaker. I have an appointment with the head of marketing and sales. This i. V. For is aimed at the fast growing s. U. V. Segment. The i. D. 3 was developed for the lower priced compact market and as a more affordable rival to test this popular model 3. But will focus wagon have the courage to switch from a classic Combustion Engine car maker to an all electric future. Produces only economy we want to make 300000. 00 cars here per year and were already moving forward on the next factory and then well also. A collector cars including ninetys which will give us some breathing space and in china there will be even more production factories will soon be popping up all over the place. In her eyes conventionally powered cars will gradually become niche models the german auto giant aims to be c o 2 neutral by 2050 for decades the car maker has been putting standardized jaceys in its conventional vehicles sharing those construction designs between different groups brands has been a key factor in v. T. Abuse rise to the top spot but will the concept also work with cars is a platform this platform was developed with each cars in mind too so we can offer customers affordable immobility options its 100 percent volkswagen but of course skoda say at an audi well use it too and there will also be a premium platform so it will be pretty nicely covered. Towards the end of my adventure with the idea 3 im passed by a classic v. W. Bug once the best selling car of all time. Now the car maker hopes that the cars will help them stay in front of the competition. Itll be interesting to see how things develop and of course for tesla once they get that gigafactory off running. Thanks for joining us for another episode of may next time. S. Joe biden edges. Closer to the white house after notching wins in crucial swing states the democratic nominee tells supporters hes confident of claiming the white house vote is still being tallied in several states for President Donald Trump is mounting legal challenges in a bid to put the brakes on the ballot count. A more your blue cross welcome to the program there is still no winner in the u. S. Election but there are some encouraging signs for democratic challenger joe biden the former Vice President breathing a little easier after picking up wins in some closely fought states President Trump meanwhile is facing increasingly difficult path to win reelection hes launched several legal challenges aimed at stopping vote counting after making on founded allegations of voter fraud so heres a look at the results of where we stand right now and these are changing and we will bring you up to date as best as possible our figures show biden is currently with 264 electoral votes to President Donald Trump 214 now that puts joe biden just 6 Electoral College votes shy of the magic 270 needed to win the presidency how did he get there well 1st of all we have michigan the counting is done there bidens one thats daves got 16 Electoral College votes and it was a close vote the win in michigan as said lisa in just 6 short along with another win in the neighboring state of wisconsin our figures indicate hes won wisconsin with 10 electoral votes. So what is a little less certain going out west nevada nevada like i said 6 electoral votes there that could be key but it is a very very close race if joe biden maintains his lead in nevada it could bring him victory but it is a tough call with the president United States right on his heels also in georgia 16 electoral votes on the table trump is leading but the margin is narrowing and narrowing and narrowing the Trump Campaign has filed a lawsuit alleging that in eligible late absentee ballots may have been added to the count and lets head back out west the data for biden is no good but razor thin in arizona its a very very tense race for the white house it is hardly over yet even if things are looking slightly better for joe biden the counting is still going on if we look at the country those states are filling up with colors and the path to victory appears to be narrowing significantly for donald trump but it aint over till its over and lets get more on exactly what that means with my colleague Stacey Bivins here in the studio georgia yes we keep bouncing around the country wisconsin michigan pennsylvania maybe arizona maybe not go at it now were landing on georgia what is georgia mean for the election right now well georgia is key because it will determine 1st of all. It will keep joe biden alive or 2 on a champ alive either one of these camps they both need georgia and the thing is you mentioned the lawsuit in georgia with the Trump Campaign its concerning 53 votes 535353 not 53500 just 53 so what happened was is that the camp says that these 53 votes came in on election day but after the 7 pm get to that line now i dont know how they know this and theyre going to have to prove how they know this or if this is true but this is what what theyre focusing on and part of this has to do with the Trump Campaign just wanting to seem like its viable so even if trump loses he doesnt want to seem like a really big loser so he wants to feel like once you give the the image that if in fact he does lose its not because its fair its because Something Else has happened look at all these Little Things that these democrats have done these democratic governors have done to keep me out of the loop there ive seen a reality t. V. Show i think about this. The biggest the biggest loser you know 53 votes that really gives a whole new understanding to counting every vote the United States is a huge country one of the largest democracies in the world this is not the 1st time that weve you know had such razor thin margins such difficulties counting votes what is going on in america that we cant seem to get a quick reliable count on just where people stand on their elected leaders also be fair we usually get pretty quick results even though you know it takes a long time for the results to be complete we usually have an idea whos going to win usually in the wee hours of the morning but were in the middle of a pandemic and one of the challenges that we have here is that theres millions of votes that came in by mail. And theres a shortage of staff because of the pandemic and also theres not one national nonpartisan group. That oversee these elections its usually handled by whoever is pena left democrat or republican and a lot of these republican states and counties theres been a little bit of Voter Suppression so fewer drop boxes and fewer polling places so that adds to the build up of all of all of the votes thats very much the fox guarding the hen house a lot of these situations so earlier we had joe biden speaking in his home state of delaware very clear not to declare victory but maybe coming a little bit closer to it lets have a quick list. And now after a long night of county its clear that were one you know states to reach 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency im not here to clear that weve won but i am here to report to the count is finished we believe we will be the winners almost counted. We have won wisconsin 520000 over votes virtually the same margin the President Trump won that state 4 years ago in michigan we lead by over 35000 votes and its growing a substantially bigger margin and President Trump won michigan in 2016 michigan will complete his photo soon maybe as early as the day and i feel very good about pennsylvania virtually all the remaining balance to be counted are cast by mail and weve been winning 78 percent of the vote by mail in pennsylvania we flipped arizona and the 2nd district of nebraska of special significance to me is that weve won with the majority of the american people. And every indication is that that majority will grow the popular vote lead of nearly 3000000. 00 votes and every indication is that will grow as well in the senate hershon are on track to win more vote ticket in the history of this country than ever won the presidency advise for is over 70000000 votes. So shoes on the other foot if it was good enough these margins of victory for trump in 2016 now biden saying hey theyre good enough for us as well but it cant be very satisfying victory especially when the polls consistently for months are showing biden nationally of 7 to 10 points in the major states you know 58 points here hes just squeaking by what happens well and a win is a win so even though democrats are upset that it wasnt a landslide and it wasnt this huge repudiation against donald trump that they were hoping for at the end of the day that the democrats believe that they have a path thats best for america so they just need to win that thats thats the main thing what happened with the pollsters i dont know this is a this is a real issue and if i had this ability to know this i would not be sitting across from you id be having like margaritas in majorca something i dont know but its something that they have to think about but the results have been very instructive for me this looks like 2 things 1st of all the Republican Party needs to broaden its base you cant rely on the shrinking demographic of non educated why people to get you through. For the democrats they need to do is my grandfather said dance with the one that brought them so they need to invest more and getting more africanamericans more latinos to vote because even though trump didnt get huge points with them it was enough to drag this whole thing out you know well. You know going off what your grandfather said lets see what people in delaware had to say we have our reporters on the ground there in delaware and this is a little bit of what a few voters were thinking of where were at right now in this election. Just flew righteous to find out who won i wouldnt say im as nervous as a lot of people. President s really dont really affect my life that much and never say about it just because its so close right now but im feeling good about it because biden did just when the scots in michigan and i know right now were waiting to hear about nevada and its looking good with pennsylvania so im really hoping that its going to be a success right in. The president ial election is not going to determine a change to change it determine among the people. That is take. The stand approach the 1000000 process. The process. Its a little disappointing how many spaces in counties where red at or near me but overall it is what it is not necessarily that we dont know the results yet so there is no absolute answer all right so some reserved good feelings going on in joe bidens home state lets talk about donald trump hes often seen as such a divisive figure hes never you know his of Approval Ratings have never really gone over the mid fortys theyve been even lower than that been hit so hard for you know criticism of the coronavirus and yet he performed very well what do we learn about donald trump from this is from his you know his 2nd election is 2nd campaign im not really sure that we learned so much from donald trump as much as we learn more about the American Public and what weve learned is that there is a deep divide and its almost 5050 and i think that his presidency exaggerated that even more and it emboldened some people who feel like they are the new quiet majority and they want the change to move slower or they. Are afraid of brown and the other and they identify with the things that he says now democrats find his rhetoric extremely racist a massage and a stick but for them this is for some of those voters this is how they feel for other voters its a bit more cynical its about the bottom line they appreciate the tax cuts and they can ignore all the rest of the rhetoric or all the rest of the rhetoric and a little bit maybe some of them agree with some of it too i was listening to a sound bite by jury questionnaire where he said well more black people need to want to succeed if marching doesnt mean that you want to succeed but there are a lot of people and some of these rural areas in bigger areas that agree that agree with with that so its that donald trump reflects part of america that a lot of other america thought was much smaller and was fading away but its here indeed and you know going off of the election its still early we dont have a result go either way right now are there any lessons we can learn you know whether youre democrat republican or do we see from this election i think what we learned is that 1st of all you cant trust the polls all the time and that were already there. And you really have to focus on your base and extending your base if you want to win because this whole thing about trying to claw votes away from people is so unamerican and so undemocratic and its so deflating to so many people so its just better to try to get more people involved in the process as opposed to disenfranchising so many people. Can indeed be a very unsatisfying kind a way to win regardless of what side stacy bivins thank you very much for that analysis well see you soon. So this is d. W. News live from berlin lets give you a quick reminder of the top story we are following for you in the u. S. Election democratic president ial candidate joe biden added to swing state of michigan to his column putting him just 6 Electoral College votes short of victory speaking in delaware biden said he was confident of winning trump is planning legal challenges to the folk out.
