Life comes to a brief halt in the eastern german city of hama where one year ago today a confessed attacked a synagogue killing 2 people. Caesar. Tougher restrictions take effect in berlin and across germany to stem the tide of infections hospitals though say they are ready. Thanks for joining us. The United NationsWorld Food Program has won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize the Norwegian Nobel Committee honored the u. N. Agency for fighting Global Hunger and the use of hunger as a weapon of war the Committee Also said the award was a call to the International Community not to underfund the f w p its perhaps the most prestigious award in the world the Nobel Peace Prize is craved by World Leaders including one of this years nominees stunnel trump but the jury decided to honor an organization not a politician for promoting peace the prize came with an urgent appeal here with this years award than a week Nobel Committee wishes to turn the eyes of the world towards the millions of people who suffer from a face the threat of hunger the world the World Food Program plays a key role in multilateral cooperation in making Food Security an instrument of peace. Last year the World Food Program fed almost a 1000000 people at risk of starvation. The u. N. Body is active in 88 countries this has made it an agent of peace says the Nobel Committee the link between hunger and Armed Conflict is a vicious circle of war and conflict can cause Food Insecurity and hunger just as hunger and Food Insecurity can cause delays conflicts to flare and trigger the use of violence. As the winner was announced in oslo there was joy and surprise at the w. F. Pay real. I mean this is the 1st time in my life a bit speechless but this is a little well talk about the most exciting point in time of your life is the Nobel Peace Prize it is because of the the family theyre out there in the most difficult complex places all in the world with this war on fleet climate extremes it doesnt matter theyre out there and they deserve this award and wow wow wow well market will even that wont be much time to celebrate 175000000 people suffered from a key tanga in 2019 the most in here is challenges that the coronavirus conflict and Climate Change ensure that the well of the World Food Program is not about to get any easier. Im joined now by between she is the World Food Programs chief spokesperson here in berlin 1st of all been great to see you and how do you feel did you have an inkling that the program would win. Thank you michael its wonderful to be with you and see you again we didnt i was sitting on my sofa eating a sandwich watching television when this happened that day i fell off the stove on was put a video out of twitter for because i got a phone its amazing and its also very humbling i mean you know the needs a huge. Its such a difficult job that my colleagues in the field are doing especially now in corona times when our guests are not when so many people are hurting and have lost their jobs and going hungry and my colleagues in the fields or the thousands of people who are driving trucks are being shot at the trucks are being robbed and theyre being held up at gunpoint by all of. Those colleagues deserve this honor so between a moment here chance for you to raise awareness or a 2 part question whats the peace corps task and what aspect of your work do people not know about. We save lives and we change lives thats the number one thing weve held out for 100000000 people last year which is obvious cash in some 80 countries often in war zones of new countries hit by Climate Change by droughts and floods and that task is never ending and the need for funds is never ending and i hope that people realize that hunger is often used as a weapon of war but food can be a real weapon for peace if we get in before a war escalates before the conflict escalates and bring food to people so that theyre not fighting each other in order to survive in order to get food we can prevent some conflicts but i think the big message is also to the men with weapons and the men and women with power who are leading wars these wars have to stop. Many hundreds of millions of people dont know where their next meal is coming from and we could fight it if not for the wars between with the World Food Program thanks so much and congratulations thank you michael. Lets take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world. President has declared a state of emergency in the capital bishkek and ordered troops to restore order the announcement came as protesters took to the streets for a 5th consecutive day following sundays disputed parliamentary elections earlier the president had said he was ready to resign once a new cabinet was appointed. Protesters have burned posters of spains King Philippe during separatist demonstrations against them on a visit to barcelona with prime minister. Their trip to the disputed region comes just 2 weeks after Spains Supreme Court removed his regional chief from office on charges of disobedience. The f. B. I. Says it has for an alleged plot to kidnap and overthrow the democratic governor of the us state of michigan 13 men have been charged many of whom have links to right wing militia thinking authorities Governor Gretchen Whitmer accuse President Donald Trump of stoking extremism by failing to condemn hate groups. Now germanys foreign minister has called right wing the greatest threat facing the country heiko mosque gave the warning in an interview as germany marks the one Year Anniversary of a deadly attack on a synagogue in the eastern city of hama a confessed neo nazi failed to breach the synagogues front door but gunned down 2 people outside. So i have a question john. Grady is in hala greetings kate you were there a year ago how did those hours unfold. Well today its been a very somber day beginning with the tolling of those bells as we heard just that were followed by 2 minute silence that was at one minute past midday today and saffir hours ago now and that was the exact time a year ago when the gunman 1st fired his shots into the exterior door into the grounds of the synagogue that you might be able to see behind the trees behind me of course we know that he never made it through that door and then went on to shoot 2 innocent people one here on the street behind me and one at a nearby so there are several Memorial Services taking place today acts of commemoration just now in front of the synagogue behind me a new memorial plaque has been unveiled to the 2 victims who lost their lives last year and a new memorial on the grounds of the synagogue is about to be unveiled as well thats going to be followed this evening by a Memorial Service in the center of town which is going to also be attended by the german president. Whos later expected to give a speech so visual memories of what happened on that truthful day but what else is changed for the Jewish Community in hala. Well having just having spoken to a few members of the Jewish Community today and in the months following the attack as well and theres a real mixed response of course that question goes beyond how the question is whats being done to jewish communities across germany and i certainly has been an increase in Police Presence at a number of synagogues and in the jewish facilities as well as around the country but thats not always the case and even here in helena is a very slow process of rebuilding trust as well between police and the Jewish Community here after it was found that there were a lot of failures and mistakes made as well by the police before and after. Attack on the synagogue behind me one year ago today how important is this memorial day for the city. It is extremely important it certainly put hollow on the map last year and for all of the wrong reasons but this of course is just one of several anticipate it far right extremist attacks that weve seen in recent years and this is a chance today as well having been to a special exhibit today people there are saying this is a chance to really address this issue all of the semitism and far right extremism in germany is we as you mentioned already. The German Foreign minister said today that all right extremism is the biggest problem the biggest threat facing germany right now the head of germanys Domestic Intelligence agency said as well as the days of one use of paper that anti semitism is a growing problem in germany and for a long time we talked about how anderson much is and was back in germany but having spoken to a lot of people here in holland their opinion is it never went away simply become less of a to be you it has become more legitimize through various for rights of far right extremist groups in recent years and that is an issue that needs to be dealt with immediately by thin German Society and by politicians as well. Brady thanks as always kate. Meanwhile u. S. President donald trump is stepping up his plans to return to the campaign trail just a few days after being released from hospital for a week over 1000 infection hes considering holding rallies this weekend in florida in pennsylvania but its not yet know whether hes tested negative for the virus since his release the uncertainty is also throwing the remaining debates with his rival Democrat Joe Biden into down. As the u. S. President ial campaign enters its final stages its still unclear if next weeks debate will actually go ahead because of president don Trumps Health but trump insists hes recovered and wants to get back on the campaign trail well what were doing is we want to do a reality in florida in florida and saturday night might come back and do one intense of ania in the following. Incredible whats going on i feel so good in a phone interview with the u. S. Network fox news he sounded upbeat but less than clear about his health. The cast will be tomorrow and the actual task is the very latest on the time but they found very little infection or virus anyhow dont know that they found any i didnt go into it greatly with the doctors for me trump has dismissed as ridiculous a proposal to hold next weeks president ial debate virtually but the Debate Commission is concerned that the u. S. President could still be infectious many in the medical field agree everybody has had a test is not necessarily consider a mild piece he was put on steroids after all and if you think about that then the c. D. C. Guidelines suggest at least a 20 day window period of isolation plus added to the fact that it is put on steroids which can actually prolong the viral shedding meanwhile democratic candidate joe biden continues his campaign. We dont know what the president. Might every 2nd me to comment on that now would be irresponsible i think it is going to follow the commissions recommendation he goes off and have a rally out. On a lot of many in washington believe that if the rivals meet again face to face it will most likely not be before the final debate should you all for the 22nd. Thank you for germany voters and residents of germany. Were joined now by know who should be standing outside the german chancellor mikhail are you there yes i can hear you we saw the dome and sunsets today appeals to the Younger Generation because thats where a lot of this infection is coming from and thats a significant different
