A 2nd lockdown failed to contain a spike in toronto virus cases. Im married to evanston its good to have you with us to us astronauts have splash down in the gulf of mexico on board the space x. s dragon capsule successfully ending the 1st private test flight into space the vessel reach temperatures of nearly 2000 degrees as it streaks through earths atmosphere astronauts doug hurley and bob behnken report that theyre in good health after spending 2 months aboard the International Space station and theyre the 1st astronauts to be launched from u. S. Soil since 2011 we can see. More about the spectacular landing in a minute but 1st heres a quick look back at that historic space mission. Very few but here its something not seen for a decade before. You think that god the father was a spaceship carrying astronauts blasting off u. S. Soil. Right you know American Space flight. In may this year u. S. Astronauts doug hurley and bob behnken boarded the falcon 9 rocket and took off to the International Space station it was significant for 2 reasons not since 2011 had the United States launched a spacecraft carrying astronauts after the retirement of the Space Shuttle u. S. Astronauts had been relying on russian ships to get to the International Space station. It was also the 1st mission to the i s s with a privately built spacecraft the falcon 9 rocket a product of the space x. Company built in collaboration with nasa. The unable to fly a 1st flight of a vehicle as a test pilot is is it once in a generational type of opportunity so obviously im very thankful for it. Once the ship reached low orbit successfully the 1st real test was docking with the International Space station a few tense minutes passed before the 2 were safely on board. It was then time to get to work but the astronauts completing multiple spacewalks to complete essential maintenance and safety checks of the space station. It really is something that youre aware that you are on the very edge of the space station some of the signs out there say dead end and its true that you dont want to keep going in that direction unless you really know what your doing. It was then time to return to earth with bob and dog back in the capsule it thrusters to safely push it away from the International Space station 35 pm pacific. Bob and doug have concluded their stay aboard the International Space station theyre on their way back to planet earth and now theyve returned with the splash earlier i spoke with keith cowing hes the editor of the space news website the earth awash dot com and i asked him what he made of that landing well it was sort of like nature will really when i was a little cute in the sixtys one word you could this is who he was. Well we have mentioned that this splashdown technique is a rather Old Fashioned way of bringing a space crew back to earth why did nasa decide to introduce this method for this landing. Well its interesting because theres another spacecraft that boeing is flying which can land on the land so this and the russians have been leaning on lee and for half a century the chinese are doing to us more than one way to do it weve got a lot of emotion around us and so its actually kind of useful and be easier to explain the notion that you know for you we did this at 1st with them or 3 during apollo programs with them here was a shock for a quarter century which lead like an airplane so this is one of those things that we used to do now were doing everything in because were now ok as i was watching this i was really wondering what does it feel like for the astronauts in that capsule coming at such velocity through the atmosphere and then can i say crashing into the water landing in the water can you tell us a bit what it must feel like for them with a little training literally anybody can do thats not the security for the scary part is being inside of something thats fun louis and fire on the outside looking at 17500 miles an hour going through the atmosphere and shaking and so forth and ends up in the persons go out and then pretty much its calm right down apparently the ocean is very smooth today so it looks like a very calm lady so its a lot of choir very hurry up and wait and when youre home. What would you say was the major achievement of this mission in the area of making sure that they get out of there well surprised the i dont think you could see it it was it was a spacecraft sloan before it is. Not a spacecraft that has flown a dozen times that spacecraft used in many ways like others face death of done so thats not the new thing the new thing is the approach whereby the spacecraft was designed to cure or and this was done through the private sector and of course a lot of space x. He the 1st ones to tell you that theres not a lot of the trio of ways of technology they would have been able to do this but the trick here is one thing does it look like a nasa space. I mean youve got now the private sector who could make this misprint really look like its a feature is declining not a species but moreover this is whats more economically and they could probably do it or frequently with the same space yes it would be able to do so the most important thing is that theyve found a way to make what is usually considered to be. Cheaper and therefore if its cheaper it becomes even more routine and if its more routine are we going to see Space Tourism has this mission pave the way for Something Like that in the near future. Apparently it has tom cruise apparently bought some seats on a space x. Y. To suit a movie so hell be working im sure that the Tax Accountants and so use working but you know i mean hes flying up there weve her. Commercial passengers flying at the space station on russian spacecraft so thats not a new idea well i think when you see that theres more ways to get more people up here they just read the results as more people will be up there for reasons whether theyre doing science next to it kate cowing editor at nasa watch dot com thank you so very much great to talk to you. To afghanistan now where the socalled Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack on a prison in the east of the country it happened in the city of jalalabad where at least 3 bombs exploded outside a jail complex and multiple gunmen battled Security Forces several people are dead and dozens more are injured they attack comes a day after a senior Islamic State commander was killed by Afghan Special forces for the latest on this developing story im joined now by ali latif he was a journalist in kabul so ali what is the situation on the ground right now in jalalabad. So the situation on the ground is still hectic you know there are inmates from the prison the were released some escaped some turned themselves back into Security Forces and theres footage of some saying that they skate for their own protection because they have no allegiance to the socalled Islamic State group or to the toll of on or any other armed group but they just had to get out of the compound and Police Special forces are there but whats really important about this attack is that these socalled Islamic State forces are the ones who claimed responsibility as you said earlier their intelligence director was killed. Actually just yesterday near the city of jalalabad and whats most important about this attack and the fact that these forces claiming to be diet or the socalled Islamic State are the ones that are claiming responsibility for it is that in november 2019 on president travel tending a heart the province was which was considered a major base for these forces and said that they had essentially eliminated all of within that province and essentially in afghanistan because that was their major stronghold in the country and at the time he said you know there are only loose fragments left who are on the run who cannot stage major attacks and now weve seen just in the last few months you know theyve staged an attack on a sikh temple and called wolf they stage an attack on a Maternity Ward also in kabul run by myself which eventually led m. S. F. To shut down that Maternity Ward and now again in jalalabad a city which has been a frequent target of their attacks so you know it leaves a lot of questions about the security situation in of on and on and what these socalled forces are really able to. How theyre able to operate and what it means that they were supposedly eliminated in november 2001000. Porting from kabul thank you so very much for that update. Hugh the australian state of victoria has declared a state of disaster amid a surge in corona virus infections a range of new law measures has also been imposed including a nighttime curfew for the city of melbourne this comes after previous lockdown measures failed to curb a spike in new covert cases. Their last moments of freedom before the curfew came into effect the new measures are the country strictest to date melbourne is already under a 6 week lockdown but the infection numbers are still rising victorias premier has now declared a state of disaster. We can no longer have people visiting although as we can no longer have people simply in about for no good reason whatsoever it is not an easy decision to mike but it is the decision that is necessary and that is war or have my duty and thats war police will be out in force and you will be stopped and you will be asked then you will need to demonstrate that you are lawfully out and that you are not breaching that curfew the premier said people are not taking the virus seriously enough officials reported that one quarter of those who recently tested positive had violated lockdown rules. Authorities now have greater powers over melbournes 5000000. 00 residents additional restrictions for workplaces are to be announced on monday the latest day at home order will be in effect for at least 6 weeks. Last really is not the only country experiencing a surge in corona virus infections germany has also seen a spike in domestic cases in recent weeks but that didnt stop nearly 20000 people from holding a rally in the capital berlin on saturday to protest against coronavirus restrictions german leaders have slammed the rally as irresponsible. Sundays protest in berlin against the rules to fight the coronavirus demonstrators failed to keep their distance from each other and they didnt wear masks either politicians are entrenched. Hes a i mean i was on the one hand theyre exercising their right to protest but there are rules which they disregard their behavior is playing with peoples lives you make them leave a message fighting for freedom and responsibility go hand in hand theres the freedom to exercise ones right to demonstrate but also a responsibility to abide by the rules and instead of a relaxation of the restrictions the bavarian state premier mock was into would rather see a tougher enforcement by authorities to fight the virus if a Police Office people who come from risk areas and dont take a coronavirus test or refuse to take one along with those who deliberately violate the measures must face a fine otherwise all of this makes little sense. Infections rise in germany the best way to deal with the pandemic looks set to cause further debate. And lets go back to our top story for a moment the return of 2 u. S. Astronauts onboard the space x. s dragon capsule on that capsule has now been opened and here are the 1st pictures of astronaut bob franken the 1st of the 2 on board exiting the space craft but over an hour ago the crew had splashed down in the gulf of mexico successfully ending their test mission to the International Space station and the bank and his colleague doug hurley were the 1st astronauts to be launched from the u.
