A 2nd lockdown failed to contain a spike in corona virus cases. Marion evans dean its good to have you with us 2 u. S. Astronauts have just splashed down in the gulf of mexico on board space x. As a dragon capsule successfully ending the 1st private test flight into space the vessel reach temperatures of nearly 2000 degrees as it streaked through earths atmosphere astronauts doug hurley and bob behnken spent 2 months aboard the International Space station the 1st astronauts launch from u. S. Soil since 2011 and its the 1st water landing carried out by nasa since 1985 as 975 rather. Socially probs the water and lets go straight to keith cowing in washington hes the editor of the space news web site nasa watch dot com and also happens to be a former nasa employee good to see you again keith so we were all watching the splash down landing just a short time ago what did you make of it well it was sort of like nature will reduce when i was a little kid in the sixtys but one word you can play with this is. It was for us. Well we have mentioned that this splashdown technique is a rather Old Fashioned way of bringing a space crew back to earth why did nasa decide to introduce this method for this landing. Well its interesting because theres another spacecraft that will use one which can land on the land so whos in the russians have been living on land or half a century the chinese are doing very close more than one way to do it weve got a lot of ocean around us and so its actually kind of useful in the easier to fill in the ocean for you know for you we do theres a person who can work 3 during apollo programs were going to hear a screenshot report of a search huge lead like an airplane so this is one of those things that used to do now were doing every year and because were now looking as i was watching this i was really wondering what does it feel like for the astronauts in that capsule coming at such velocity through the atmosphere and then can i say crashing into the water landing in the water can you tell us a bit what it must feel like for them. Well. Some of them have been in the senate huge a 300. 00 g. s and with a little treat literally anybody can do this and the security part of your report is being cited something thats fun louie and fire in the outside looking at simpson 1500 miles an hour they going through the atmosphere and shaking and so forth and then children the persians go out and then pretty much its calm right down in apparently the ocean is very smooth today so it would look very calm leave me so its a lot of wired fury hurry up and wait and when youre home well i dont know case i dont know if i would say anybody can do it im not so sure i could do it personally now to do stay with us when we 1st want to take a brief look back at this Historic Mission and id like to continue the conversation after its 3 too but here its something not seen for a decade thank god theyre good thanks jack god the father died in the space ship carrying astronauts blasting off u. S. Soil. Right out of you know American Space boy. In may this year u. S. Astronauts doug hurley and bob behnken boarded the falcon 9 rocket and took off to the International Space station. It was significant for 2 reasons not since 2011 had the United States launched a spacecraft carrying astronauts after the retirement of the Space Shuttle u. S. Astronauts had been relying on russian ships to get to the International Space station. It was also the 1st mission to the ice s with a privately built spacecraft the falcon 9 rocket a product of the space x. Company built in collaboration with nasa. The unable to fly a 1st flight of a vehicle as a test pilot is is it once in a generational type of opportunity so obviously im very thankful for it. Once the ship reached low orbit successfully the 1st real test was docking with the International Space station a few tens minutes passed before the 2 passion or it was safely on board. It was then time to get to work but the astronauts completing multiple space walks to complete essential maintenance and safety checks of the space station. It really is something that youre aware that you are the very edge of the space station some of the signs out there say dead end and its true that you dont want to keep going in that direction unless you really know what youre doing it was then time to return to earth with bob and doug back in their capsule it thrusters to safely push it away from the International Space station 35 pm pacific and with that bob and doug have concluded their stay aboard the International Space station theyre on their way back to planet earth. And now the astronauts have returned of back with a splash and id like to continue speaking to keith cowing of nasa watch who is still with us or saying keith by the way some live pictures of that capsule in the water some some boats driving up to the capsule i guess to pick up those astronauts. What would you say was the major achievement of this mission here making sure that. Well surprised to be i dont think you could see it it was logic it was a spacecraft sloan before it is. Not a spacecraft that has flown a dozen times that space craft used in many ways like all the spacecraft theyve done so thats not the new thing the new thing is the approach where by the spacecraft was designed to cure and there was something the private sector forced a lot of what in space x. Be the 1st ones to tell you that its not a lot of the trailblazing. We wouldve been able to do this but the trick here is well one thing does it look like a nasa spacecraft i mean youve got now the private sector who could make this misprint really look like its a future is declining not a space but more over the much more economically and they could probably do it or frequently with the same spacecraft yes and be able to do so the most important thing is that they found a way to make what you usually consider to be. Cheaper and therefore you could cheaper it becomes even more routine and if its more routine are we going to see Space Tourism has this mission pave the way for Something Like that in the near future but it apparently it has tom cruise has apparently bought some seats on a space x. Flight to suit a movie so hell be working im sure that the Tax Accountants and so hes working well you know i mean hes flying up there weve heard. Commercial passengers flying a space station on russian spacecraft thats not a new idea well i think when you see that theres more ways to get more people up here they just read the results as more people will be up there for reasons whether theyre doing scientists next year kate cowing editor at nasa watch dot com thank you so very much great to talk to you. To australia now where the state of victoria has declared a state of disaster amid a surge in corona virus infections a range of new lockdown measures has also been imposed including a nighttime curfew for the city of melbourne this comes after previous lockdown measures failed to curb a spike in new covert cases. Their last moments of freedom before the curfew came into effect the new measures are the countrys strictest to date melbourne is already under a 6 week lockdown but the infection numbers are still rising victorias premier has now declared a state of disaster. We cannot longer have people visiting out as we can no longer have people simply asking about for not a good reason whatsoever it is not an easy decision to mike but it is the decision that is necessary and that is war i have my date and thats why police will be out in force and you will be stopped and you will be asked then you will need to demonstrate that you are lawfully out and that you are not breaching that curfew the premier said people are not taking the virus seriously enough officials reported that one quarter of those who recently tested positive had violated the lockdown rules. Authorities now have greater powers over melbournes 5000000 residents. Additional restrictions for work places are to be announced on monday the latest day at home order will be in effect for at least 6 weeks. Well for more on this story im joined by reporter pablo foley illyrias is in the studio with me hello to you pablo so why is it that the city of melbourne in particular is seeing such spike in coronavirus cases well the Health Experts have put it down to a relaxation of the rules which is sort of quietly led to a level of complacency with regards to social distancing we heard as well in the report there that people have been breaking many of the rules and also they said so its sort of the perfect combination for things to go wrong and were seeing that exactly theyre also the premier. He said you know at the moment they can trace a lot of the infections they dont they come to try start of the workplace or to their homes so thats why its such a worrying situation. Well it is so much worse than in the rest of australia how other how are people elsewhere in the country responding to events there are incredibly worried obviously because here we are again its sort of like taking a giant step back and theres a lot of reaction as you can imagine on social media in particular if you hear from those who were very critical of this decision its quite interesting actually matthew guy hes from the Opposition Liberal Party in victoria he said 5200000 now face a curfew no lockdown ruling Small Business and mental health. All right we seem to be having some technical difficulties lets turn our attention now to some of the other stories making news around the world. State officials and survivors have gathered at auschwitz to mark european Holocaust Memorial day 1st. On august 2nd 1944 german guards liquidated of what was then known as the gypsy family camp killing more than 4000 men women and children and historians estimate that half a 1000000 sinti and roma perished in nazi occupied europe. Clashes have erupted in southern chile after police evicted indigenous protesters from a government building. The building since monday calling for lands now in the hands of Forestry Companies to be returned to them the protesters also want Political Prisoners to be allowed to rejoin their Community Amid the coronavirus pandemic. Hundreds of acres of forest are burning in italys a brutal region following suspected arson strong winds have been hampering firefighters efforts to contain the blaze authorities fear of the fires could to damage the areas electrical infrastructure. Sports news now and in formula one britains Lewis Hamilton has claimed victory at his home grand prix at Silverstone Max the stopping of red bull came 2nd and ferraris Charlotte Clare finished 3rd but not even a huge slice of bad fortune could stop hamilton from extending his lead in the drivers championship to 30 points. There were no home funds to cheer on Lewis Hamilton. But there was certainly plenty of patriotism on display a world war 2 era spitfire paid tribute to the efforts of the u. K. s Emergency Services during a pandemic before hamilton predictably soared away from the pack. To britains performance was so dominant that red bulls much for a distant 2nd decided to make a late pit stop it was a costly move that meant the young dutchman couldnt take advantage when hamiltons front left tire blew on his last lap the mercedes months somehow trundled over the line and even he couldnt quite believe it was such. That it afterwards the relief was plain oh my god i was just praying to try and get around it too so. I need to get around the last 2 quarters but i got it the 80 sevens win for hamilton then that puts him just 4 away from Michael Schumacher all time record. Thats it on your news this hour ill be back at the top of the hour with another update for you and marion evans team from me and the entire new team thanks for watching. Images of cars over.
