Surviving age of the 5th killed over 400000 people worldwide is cause for celebration for the surviving is not always the same as recovering. But its. Im so glad about my post discharge recovery and its happened very quickly but im concerned about my fatigue. For some its constant exhaustion for others heart palpitations or even memory loss. Many former covert 19 patients grapple with lingering effects long after leaving the hospital. Theyre learning the hard way the coronavirus may go but it. Can leave a painful trail in its wake. This is the w. s covert 1000. 00 special im paid Ferguson Well the corona virus has claimed the lives of hundreds of sizes of people around the world a far greater number though have survived today well be looking at the Long Term Health consequences of covert 1000 but 1st heres a story of an old man who defied all the odds to beat the disease. A bit. When youre young its different but at the age of 93 what do you have to worry about. He had prepared himself for death how about housman contracted covert 19 at the age of 93. 00 and fought the disease for more than a month. Well it hit me hard i was growing miserable and i was always tired lost my appetite but the knew i couldnt eat anything at all times throughout the surname i didnt feel like eating anyway. During the illness he lost 12 kilos at one point it seemed he would not make it he had already decided against going to a hospital and intubation but habit for his way through and pushed himself to go just a little bit further every day with his walker he had no fear during his illness. I was afraid when i was taken prisoner i felt fear then but now with the flu i wasnt at all afraid. Have had was a paratrooper during world war 2 he says those times toughened him up and that might be why he was able to survive covert 19 at such an advanced age. We were drilled it was tough during the winter we had to wash ourselves in an open street none of us ever got sick none of us ever got the flu or such thing. About. Besides happen at the other nursing home residents with covert 1000 also managed to get through it might be as simple as the canteen leader describes the day they all tested negative again. We were all so happy many Staff Members cry and even cry to it was such a relief it was such a great feeling like i. Have that is really looking forward to one thing once the coronavirus is finally under control. I have an electric car we happy when i can go to the river i would drive into the city with it its been often very weeks now and its going to be very angry with me. But what good move open the kindergartens people can gather in groups of 10 or 20 they can go to a bar older people who dont have the virus not allowed to go out again. One survivor has a rearing to get back to normal life but what might the future hold for those whove had to cope at 19 to find out im joined now by professor Matthew Bartels hes the chair of rehabilitation and physical medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in new york the fessor bottles welcome along youve had a lot of experience in designing the rehabilitation programs for people who have had to cope with 19 based on the patients youre seeing what can you tell us about the possible longer Term Health Implications of this virus. Well weve actually unfortunately been thrust into the forefront here on theory because the bronx was one of the early epicenters of the disease and so we were suddenly confronted with hundreds of patients who had to recover from the condition unfortunately there are many different problems that we see we see problems with not only one area function where the patients have a hard time breathing this is very much a restricted one disease which means that the lines become stiffer so its harder to breathe but also its harder for the oxygen to get into the system so many patients are sent home or have to do their rehabilitation with oxygen which is brand new thing for them fortunately see that many of the patients are able to wean off but we dont know if the long term implications are yet but we also see a lot of patients here at neurological issues theres a fair number of strokes and weve also had patients who have come out of their. Educations and i say use days with a lot of muscle weakness and other neurologic issues related to peripheral nerves where they have numbness or tingling and some weakness that may be attributed to that as well and then finally theres a lot of cognitive and depression as well as anxiety b. C. Because being in the i. C. U. For very long periods of time can cause some of these symptoms and theres also some concern that there may be east central or logic effects that are causing some mild cognitive deficits that fortunately also were seeing are recovering but to take several months to work through that all of their things pretty scary tell me about the kinds of rehabilitation programs that you and your team have designed. Well we start as early as the intensive care unit with early vocalisation it can actually even include during the period of time patients are on the machines in the ventilators that theres a new thing to actually place them in a face down position or we call crony so are there and team get involved early in the i. C. U. Start people started to often start to take care of themselves once they get out of the i. C. U. But then we transition there if necessary to various levels of care some patients are able to go home those are the patients with milder conditions but many of them often require some hope their range their you know out sometimes 2 or 3 times a day there has come to their home to help them but for patients who have more limitations we actually have them go to should be illustrations to civility and were fortunate in our system to have for Rehabilitation Hospital which is 150 beds expanded in the corowa emergency 260 beds and currently we have over 150 patients that are in rehabilitation and at our peak we had 90 of those patients patients just with coping disease they said before it wired if you think a life. Program exercise strengthening conditioning and tending to all of the various needs that they have rice and he said before that there needs to be a greater awareness about the experience of patients after theyve had come from 19 i think longer Term Health Impacts being under reported to you think. Well i think with the drama of the very very severe illness that cone can cause a lot of people are very caught up with mortality but i think that unfortunately we havent focused on the survivors as much because the patients are maybe one or 2 percent they actually have to challenge me and 5 or 6 percent end up in the emergency room and then and into bed in the i. C. U. Those patients many of them are survivors that they do need this long term rehabilitation and that hasnt been the focus yet although i think mouse starting now some more attention is coming to this professor nothing vital thanks so much for your insights oh youre very welcome. Time now to answer your questions about code 19 over to our science correspondent. Body testing being used to successfully contain cluster outbreaks in past epidemics. Serial logical testing is one of the tools that epidemiologists have used for decades to track the course of outbreaks and and to inform Decision Making for example i found a study from 2010 carried out by tire researchers on the h one n one outbreak that was aimed at helping to manage vaccination in that country but i couldnt find any evidence that past serial logical surveys have been used in the way i think you mean to keep a kind of ongoing score of who might be immune and and whos not to help experts to manage local outbreaks before they sped up in fact its seems to me that our lack of experience in using Antibody Testing to try to control cluster outbreaks is actually the reason there is so much confusion surrounding the topic at the moment. Wouldnt selecting a large number of Healthy People and infecting them purposely be a quicker and safer way to reach herd immunity. This idea has big potential downsides both ethical and logistical 1st and foremost of course theres the problem that that any infection with this virus possibly. By intentionally infecting even young volunteers with that you might kill them even if the risks are much lower than they are for someone whos older theres also the possibility that some volunteers could suffer long term effects Long Term Health effects we still dont know much about those then of course. Theres the issue of of keeping things under control its too easy to imagine scenarios where you let the genie out of the bottle and pause pose way more harm now then you would theoretically cause good somewhere down the road so all in all pretty much everyone in both science and politics things trying for this control herd immunity just isnt an option.
