Prepared to leave without one. Im going out as welcome to the Program Thousands of people around the world have taken to the streets in solidarity with the black lives Massive Movement here in germany big crowds have been staging sit in demonstrations and marching through hamburg and frankfurt say turned out a day after a Memorial Service for george floyd who died last month in Police Custody in the us city of minneapolis is death has triggered widespread protests against racism and police for tallahassee. German chancellor Angela Merkel has also reacted to events following the death of george floyd she criticized president on trumps leadership style but also acknowledged that germany too has problems with racism. The murder of george floyd is horrific racism is horrific and us society is very polarized. I think the politicians should aim to you nice to reconcile i think that President Trump style of politics is very controversial thats clear racism has always existed but unfortunately it exists here in germany too we should put our own house in order and hope that enough people in the us will move forward with peaceful protests im joined in the studio by a reporter. You moved from the u. S. To germany 13 years ago as a black american is your experience of racism here in germany different from the u. S. And how well it is different in terms of ive been stopped before by the police asking me for papers and once i told them here in germany here in germany and when i told them i was an american citizen they left me alone so obviously that was a sign that other black people do experience that sort of you know racial profiling but of course in terms of the institution of racism itself you know people having trouble getting into the job market or you know housing those are things that can also affect someone like me so i do have situations where my american nationality does help protect me bought the racism the institute of racism itself is something that i also have to deal with here and i also speak in we can play the report just what i want to finish as i speak about every day racism in germany as well and ive been looking into that and thats something that can be seen in the report and thats maybe something that slightly different from the United States lets have a look at the. This memorial to george floyd popped up last weekend. Well he died of the hands of a policeman in the us his death is also being used to bring awareness to racism here in germany and across the world. It is hard to find a country without any form of racism and i experienced that here as well in berlin. As the staring and of course awkward comments and statements about my skin color. That you cannot move around the city as a black person without being aware obvious can color on average there are 3. 00 to 4. 00 racist incidents reported per day in the german capital according to the berlin register for discrimination and not everyone is reporting them so there could be far more. Thats why the black lives Matter Movement has also been protesting here in berlin well europe has fewer deadly incidents involving the police some cases have stayed with me do you. Know about one of the. Only giallo burned to death in the police cell here in germany in 2005 no one was convicted for his death. In the u. K. In 2011 mark duggan was shot by a policeman who was never convicted. In france adama told he died during Police Custody in 2016 and no one has been found responsible for his death thats why the protests in france have been violent. People are frustrated with structural racism. Hasnt really dealt with its links to slavery and school on your list im here in germany several streets i named after individuals from the countries colonial period i can berlins african quarter where even now some streets bear the names of germanys most infamous and brutal colonial figures. Do you think the protest in the u. S. In europe does it change anything do you reckon wow i mean we speak about germany specifically of course with that statement from. Referring to what happened in the u. S. And racism as horrific and of course also mentioning is a quite strong was a very strong statement but if you look at the coverage like on german media that hasnt been very strong to pointing to racism in germany theyve been covering the protests in the u. S. But they havent really said look at our own problems and how are we dealing with racism in this country and i think that is what is lacking in the discussion in germany at this point do you think that the average german on the street the well meaning average white german understands whats going on in terms of racism no they dont because they dont see racism as an institution they look at it very differently and i think its a european problem its not just germany apart from the u. K. Racism is not understood as an institution like sexism is and i think people have moved past looking at sexism as you know to something that women have you know have an issue with but rather as an institution and i think we dont have that for racism in germany and i think that might take a couple of years to sort of get into peoples heads. Briefly if you can your thoughts about the u. S. Will things improve. Optimistically id like to say yes but it has to take a lot of talking i think thats what we can just hope for. Thank you very much for that is very personally. Another case of Police Brutality has sparked outrage in the u. S. This time in buffalo new york an elderly man fell to the ground and was seriously injured after he was pushed a Police OfficerBuffalo Police initially stated the man had tripped and fell 2 officers have been suspended without pay the governor of new york state called the incident utterly disgraceful. The latest round of briggss talks between the e. U. And the u. K. Have ended with no significant progress according to the u. S top negotiator. He has accused london of failing to on of the brakes a divorce agreement as the 2 sides try to thrash out a trade deal before the end of the year he claims british officials are trying to backtrack on commitments theyve already agreed to. While the british say the negotiations need to speed up a ban he was clearly frustrated. We engaged in this negotiation under british usual the joint political dicta ration that clearly sets out the terms of our future partnership this document the document is every ball in all languages. Including english. And the vehicle ration. Was negotiated with Prime Minister johnson. It is for us. And it will remain for us the only valid reference yet round after round our british counterparts seek to distance themselves from this common basis job on is speaking then we can now speak to barbara vessel in brussels or one of the you have followed todays developments on a break that weve just heard bunny is saying that the u. K. Is backtracking in all areas thats quite a strong statement the how serious is this. It is serious and it was quite stark youre right in that what he means was backtracking is that they dont sort of follow all the obligations they have signed for us johnson himself assigned to when they made the was road dream and there is this political declaration that is added to its sort of like an edit piece of paper 1516 pages Something Like that where they sit on the principles of what they wanted to do after breaks it of how they wanted to create this new relationship but after that was signed sealed and delivered it was obviously also forgotten my boss france no he thought he could just sort of push it to the side and sort of start afresh just made up his own make up his own rules for how he wants to deal with the European Union and that is what really accused him off and of course it means that now the 2 sides are sitting there so if each side dug in their trenches and theyre just sort of lobbing little verbal grenades to the other side like its your fault no its your fault you should you obstinate and you should be moving and that is not very useful at all so at the moment there is really complete stalemate. All the press you go she actions that weve seen the past 4 years if you have followed in the past 4 years do you see a path out of this deadlock now. The only party is Political Movement political intervention Boris Johnson will be the next 10 days and supposedly next week is somehow even the only provide you link a talk to sluff underline the e. U. Commission president and the council chief sean michel and they will sort of they are supposed to assess the progress that has been made no progress has been made so the question is will Boris Johnson then indicate that he is willing to move somehow that he wants to continue the talks and it would make sense to continue the talks because to have all these 300. 00 experts trade experts on both sides sit there for weeks and weeks on end and just sort of turn around in circles and sort of poor over the same material and say we cant agree on anything it is simply nonsense that does its politically not very effective so there has to be some movement and Boris Johnson thats what the e. U. Things is the one who has to sort of move 1st however as we know him and with as we have seen him and for in earlier breaks it in negotiations he things the e. U. Should blink 1st now its the same game of chicken weve seen several times before. Reporting from brussels thank you. And of some of the other stories making headlines around the world russia says it has stopped the spread of a Massive Oil Spill in northern siberia a criminal investigation is underway into the cause of the disaster which happened when a diesel reservoir collapsed at a power station the clean up and Environmental Recovery might take years. Because in australia as bands of black lives matter protests that was planned in sydney over the weekend of tortillas in the state of New South Wales took protest organizers to court arguing the event breached coronavirus social distancing moves with thousands of people expected to attend.
