Face systemic racism that has proven deadly all too often and in the United States after more than a week of protests is this a watershed moment for Law Enforcement reform or will Police Brutality simply. Its good to have you with us and we begin tonight with breaking news police here in germany say they have identified a new suspect in the 2007 disappearance of the british girl Madeleine Mccann the suspect is a german man who is currently in prison you may remember Madeleine Mccann disappeared in portugal in may of 2007 despite an enormous International Search and Media Coverage of that search her fate still remains a mystery. Are for more now we want to bring in our correspondent huns bryant he is on the story for is what more do we know so far tonight. But we have to say this is very recent information were still scrambling to clear gather together all the pieces but the federal Investigation Bureau of germany has released a statement describing the suspect as a 43 year old man who is currently in prison for a different offense for a long term sentence we dont actually know whether hes in prison here in germany oil swear in the world they have not disclosed that they have not disclosed his whereabouts the investigation is being conducted by police in brunswick the town of brunswick in western germany because that is the last place where he lived in germany before he left for portugal but the police know that he made a phone call from the area of the hotel where matthew disappeared at the time of that crime so he is directly connected to the scene of the crime in one way or another and they also say that there are likely to have been other people involved in this crime and theyre feeling to those people to come forward and they are saying those people might know where the body of the girl is that is an indication that they suspect that maddy mccann was in fact killed in addition to that there are several fed across that have been published of cars and places where this man has been living and theres an appeal to the public to come forward with information and we know that there was a lot of International Attention back in 2007 when she went missing and what could all of this mean for finding justice for maddie mccann. Well there was a Huge International company by her parents that drive out all over the world appealing for help and they were very very prominent. V. I. P. s who helped her and who helped them in that but at the same time the Portuguese Police at the time suspect that the parents of possibly having been involved in this crime so for the parents it would certainly be a huge relief and the Public Interest in this case is likely to be enormous still even for the 13 years later right. With the latest on this new suspect in the missing case of many mccann thank you. The protests d over racism and Police Brutality have thrown the United States into crisis and triggered demonstrations of solidarity around the world in london thousands of protesters gathered today in honor of georgia florida the black man who died in u. S. Police custody last week the black lives Matter Movement convened the rally drawing attention to the systemic discrimination that harms people of color in the u. K. Correspondent has been at that protest in london she told us how the killing of a black man in the United States has triggered outrage and reeses im in the United Kingdom so many thousands protest is gathering here for a peaceful protest in london gathering for a peaceful sit in hyde park and then making their way to what the houses of parliament where there are now several i was after the crisis began still people here and many of to me that this is about solidarity with the u. S. Of course but also about institutional racism here in the u. K. Many are saying that its tough to read in school that they feel that theyre being treated differently from their white counterparts that the expectations are not as high and that the racism already starts in the playground so not overt racism and injustice like in the u. S. But something must have to list how many people that put it and its clearly an issue which resonates with people and thousands of people. And this really emotional and peaceful protest that was due to loss reporting from london in the United States frustration and anger continue to fuel protests now in their 9th day but the flare ups of violence that marred previous rallies weve seen that subside meantime u. S. Defense secretary mark esper saying that the current unrest does not merit deploying federal. Troops now he says this is days after u. S. President trump threatened to call out the u. S. Another standoff between police and protesters. d on. The truth over the top of the 67 joint book you. Mom. Others to defy new yorks curfew marching through the city to protest at the death of george floyd an africanamerican at the hands of police most were peaceful but there were reports of violence including by some Police Officers. Grabbed innocent people for no reason i just cited lady cop and unfortunately the ground this do was a user journalist and a press does a press pass and a person to the ground. President trump has threatened to deploy the military and has already called up more than 20000. 00 National Guard troops. Its a move that angered many including former president ial hopeful Elizabeth Warren because its for all these words rugby is imposing i dont want one hour more people are here want to have a little protest rallies for you even the pope has spoken out condemning racism and violence. We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life. And at the heart of all this a human tragedy the mother of george floyd stored on able to hold back her tears and the full not paid. Infamy of jurors because they want justice for hill. And i want justice for him because he was. No matter well in about it think she was. In this is the group he was a good. Those calls for justice ringing out across the United States and beyond. Well tear gas tasers and pepper spray just some of the less lethal weapons us Law Enforcement have been using against george floyd protesters despite the name these weapons have a long record of causing serious harm even death. Is here at the big table with me now for more so what do we know about these just less lethal weapons that weve seen in this unrest total numbers are almost impossible to get out of these protests are happening as so many cities and Law Enforcement is of course a local issue it varies department to Department City to city but theres been some very high profile examples of these socalled less lethal weapons causing serious damage in austin we had several people seriously injure with a being by being shot by beanbag guns or beanbag loaded into modified 12 gauge shotgun one boy a teenager was shot in the face needed a 7 hour surgery and is going to be in the hospital for the foreseeable future a pregnant woman was also hit with these bean bags in minneapolis we saw a journalist a photojournalist is now half blind from getting a pepper pepper pellet in her eye and of course many people are already familiar with these unfortunately disturbing images from atlanta that we can put on the screen here that shows police trying to get these 2 college kids out of the car. And you can hear the police more and more of a fiery taser. Both these passengers who did nothing wrong we were not. Were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. These 6 officers are have since been charged fortunately with various various degrees of assault. And this is these are isolated incidents that is what happens when police have access to these kinds of devices that are believed to be nonlethal but can be have very serious effect i mean its really hard to even watch the video what. Are we here and what do Law Enforcement agencies what are they saying about using these weapons again department of department varies at the federal level theres been a few reports in the last 5 to 10 years in 2011 and 2015 under barack obama both reports in Broad Strokes said these weapons are generally good they can reduce injuries in these kinds of incidents but theyve made very clear that when over use when misused when abuse which happens and when theres poor training of these officers that these kinds of things happen these kinds of injuries and deaths take place one report even called the lazy cop syndrome one a Police Officer knows he has access to a device that isnt really going to hurt anyone or thinks he wont so they are more likely to use it and use it improperly so its really been consequences. We reach out to amnesty usa they forwarded us on to a reuters report from 2017 that gather that since the 232 thousands of 1081 deaths from just tasers and thats just one type of weapon theres been scores of lawsuits one civil rights attorney told me a man who literally wrote the book on Police Misconduct is highly critical of the use of these kinds of weapons and finally just to really bring it home have this really could be any of us i just want to show a picture of a young woman her name is victoria snelgrove and in 2004 she was a 21 year old broadcast journalism student in boston and then in october that year she went out with tens of thousands of other people to celebrate the historic world series baseball victory of the Boston Red Sox but she didnt come home that night because at some point in the night police in boston opened fire with socalled nonlethal weapons and she was struck in the eye with a pellet and i tell you this story because i was there i didnt know tory personally went to the same school both studied journalism together she was a few years ahead of me i went to her funeral never forget it mitt romney then the governor of the state was there it was a. Tragedy for the college a scandal for the city i actually reached out to her parents and they told me part of ourselves went with her were broken forever weve expressed many times to stop the violence but this world has taken a severe turn for the worse so whether a pellet in the eye or a need to the neck its these kinds of less than lethal tactics can be very deadly and you have to wonder when we learned our lesson we was always thinking.
