Iranian film there is no need for a popular and political prize if this is down or not. Im rebecca races welcome to the program the corona virus has claimed its 1st victim in the United States where a patient in their fiftys died in Washington State ecuador and qatar have also confirmed their 1st cases well far hes across the globe are implementing a range of containment measures to try to slow the spread of the virus and made a spike in cases the french government has imposed a temporary ban on indoor public gatherings of more than 5000 people. This hospital in paris is the site if a mini outbreak the corona virus transmitted by a patient who was not initially considered infected. Special at 1st there was no reason to isolate the patient because he didnt come from any of the risk areas when we realized he was infected we identified all the staff who had had contact with him. At least 3 hospital employees are now infected with the virus the french minister of health has called on the public to keep their distance from one another not to shake hands and to refrain from the traditional french kiss on the cheek. And to do that as the number of infections is also increasing in iran officially around 600. 00 people there are infected and more than 40 have died but many fear that the number of unreported cases could be much higher understandably iranians are being cautious like at this bizarre. Because of our business has dropped to 2 or 3 percent of the usual people are buying from us. South korea is also in a state of emergency and theres been a sharp rise in cases within one day more than 800 new infections were reported the military is now disinfecting train stations and Public Places in socalled corona drive ins motorists can be tested using a quick procedure without even getting out of their car they receive the results via s. M. S. Within 2 days. Lets go now to pay to hotels hes just an vaccine expert at the biennial college of medicine and joins me now from Houston Texas professor hotez thanks for joining me weve now seen the 1st death from corona virus in the u. S. What measures have been put in place to stop the spread there. Well the big worry in the United States is and before we knew the origin of it and that it was in the visual back from china or an infected area but now for the 1st time weve got 4 cases where we dont know the origin and we suspect were seeing the beginnings of Community Transmission in the northwestern part of the country Northern California oregon Washington State we dont know for sure about this particular death but we think weve been predicting that this virus will gain a foothold in the u. S. And and this is how it it may be starting and other measures being put in place to try and stop that spread. There certainly are theres been a lot of effort to in the areas that are affected to start doing active surveillance that is for instance in Northern California where weve had 2 cases where theres been potential contacts to. Do expanded testing in those areas so thats going on then isolating in jewels that we suspect may possibly be infected that thats happening but a big priority right now is to see if we can protect our Health Care Workers one of the concerns that we have and im sure its true in europe as well if you start seeing. Widespread infection among Health Care Workers and serious illness then the whole thing starts to break down very quickly so im thinking certain spittles and clinics are personal protective measures and also are vising our clinical algorithms because our or our or how we decide who were going to test because business this is usual was only if they came from the affected area but now that we have transmission theres a lot of complexities to work oh absolutely i mean south korea is another critical point europe has seen a huge increase in cases over the past few days would you say the virus is already out of control. I dont like used the term out of control because its not that our Public Health authorities are out of control its just i think where what where our moving towards is is going from epidemic in multiple areas to eventually were going to reach the point i think where would be able to call this a pandemic the World Health Organization is not using the term. At this point but but thats where were heading and were going to have to be really mindful about how to manage this and the my concerns are that its the case fatality rate is pretty high its 2 percent and thats about 10 times higher than seasonal flu and 1st we thought well thats only because were seeing the serious cases not the nonserious cases but the World Health Organization has come out last week and said you know they think that 2 percent numbers real and its also highly transmissible. I guess i want to we dont have much time left but i thought sorry to interrupt you there but i just want to i know its a 1000000. 00 question but can we expect a vaccine for this virus. Well were developing a vaccine and theres about 5 or 6 other candidates and were all moving quickly into clinical testing i think that will happen in the next few weeks but the problem is this despite what the empty vaccine lobby says that we dont adequately test faxons for safety the opposite is true no the most thoroughly tested pharmaceuticals we have for safety its going to take months to show that these vaccines are both safe and effective i doubt very much that will have a vaccine in time for this epidemic unfortunately professor paid a hotel just and vaccine expert from the bio college of medicine joining us from houston thanks very much for the update thanks very much. Turning now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world former u. S. Vice President Joe Biden has won a strong victory in the South Carolina democratic primary election thanks in part to support from black voters his win comes at a crucial moment just days before several states vote on super tuesday migrants in turkey have rushed to borders with the European Union after ankara said it would no longer hold them back but greece in bulgaria have boosted their security at their frontiers leaving thousands trapped in no mans land between the 2 sides. And the u. S. And the taliban have signed a deal and aimed at ending 2 decades of conflict in afghanistan it calls for the u. S. To gradually withdraw its troops while the taliban promised not to allow the country to be used as a base for terror attacks. And for more on that story im joined by our washington correspondent col of blanket color thanks for joining me trump wants to meet with representatives of the taliban now what are commentators in the u. S. Expecting to come from that all supporters of President Trump are very excited about this they are saying that trump is keeping his promises and theyre expecting this meeting between trump and the taliban and the deal that they have just made to really lead to peace and to an end of this endless war as if ganesan conflict is known here theyre calling it a story milestone but on the other side you have people who are who are very skeptical of this and who have finished specially baffled by the part of the deal that sees the release of 5000 taliban prisoners theyre calling that a high risk and they dont really trust that this really will bring peace or the u. S. Promises to withdraw all of its troops from afghanistan as you just mentioned theyre calling it a historic milestone so how important is this to President Trump with the election looming in november. Its extremely important to the president when he entered office he promised that he would pull all u. S. Troops out of afghanistan and so now that the time in which he can do that is running short so several people have said that they view this as kind of a rush job to be it done before the elections and i actually talked to an expert a little while ago and he said the Trump Administration is probably looking at this in terms of well lets hope things go smoothly in afghanistan with the will withdrawal and if something goes sideways lets hope it happens after our elections in November Paula blind speaking to us from washington d.
