a difficult time. i would add that i regretted the c.d.u. has to clear up its relationship with right wing extremists itself it's also a new time of instability for the cd possibly for the federal government. also coming up a 1st but not america 1st at the oscars last night it was history making show business and the politics of showing up the politicians it told me only have 45 seconds appear which is 45 seconds more than senate gave john bolton this week. i. put to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and all around the world it welcome but we begin the day here in germany the day when chancellor angela merkel's carefully constructed plans for the country's future completely. fell apart the woman who medical groomed to be her successor the next german chancellor today said she's changed her mind on a great crumb covered by our no one as a k.k.k. stunned the nation saying that she will also step down as leader of her party the conservative c.d.u. case decision marks a seismic shift for a country that is used to politics changing at the speed of plate tectonics slow deliberate predictable what today's announcement is anything but then the question of who the next leader will be well that is now wide open along with the immediate future for until america medical plans to step down next year if her party and the country are willing to wait if that plan doesn't go the way of the once future leader a.k.k. if she hadn't the least and the cons that i will not run for chancellor if you will be just as i have announced i will continue to lead the process of reaching consensus on a candidate for chancellor of the c.d.u. from the front common. fun fun. it's the norm for the cons the shaft and the separation of the chancellorship and the party chair and the open question of the candidacy for chancellor is weakening the c.d.u. in a phase of politics in germany in which this system and germany depend on a strong c.d.u. is. the time for us it's in my view the party leadership and chancellor candidate ultimately must be in the same hands that is why i will remain the party leader until a decision is made about who will run for chancellor. to a cutoff in is. well to talk about that i'm joined tonight at the big table by patrick borg he is a member of the german parliament he is a member of the conservative c.d.u. party that's the party a chance on the miracle it's good to have you back on the show so you know what happened today shocked i know what shocked you were shocked a lot of people who's in charge of your party tonight 1st of all we didn't expected a thing come come then spoke with a lot of colleagues of mine of the party she made that decision i think from the background of the last elections to raul not just for injury of many elections she took over the leadership of the party a very difficult period of time so she made that decision and we didn't expect it so she is still the leader and she will lead the party in the next party convention which. has kept chancellor of course with going back to what we can she lead the world because if she was able to lead the party we would not have seen the debacle in the state of turin g. that we saw last week right i think this process is that start earlier so she had had such a long time the elections came in a period just in the 1st part of a period and i think she made the decision today to make clear it's not going on with me the party should find somebody else that is a process too and she gave room for this process i think she is guiding the process but the party has to find somebody we have several candidates better in a better position than the many other parties and germany will they should who should be the next head of your party i think that the of course the party decides not just me we have some candidates with little with young spawn with. head of state of north from with faith that was i mean that i think also the c.s.u. has got a possible candidate so we have to decide that and i think this needs time the name for. ric mims is known around the world and i know mr maritz he resigned from the supervisory board at the investment firm blackrock he did that last month he said last week that he is considering running for parliament again would you support his candidacy i think i would support it definitely for being chancellor in the next year in the election i think he's doing step by step being more involved in the party he gave up his job. and he said i want to concentrate myself of so faulting the party in this process the process off the angle americal so it is a process for the party imagine a 15 years chancery about 18 years leading the party it with i'm going and now we are in the transition process i think for the mets will play a very important role in it when friedrich minutes left politics you took his seat in parliament i mean you're from the same district if he wants to run for parliament again. what happens to you would you be standing in the way you wouldn't because we talked about it he is opinion is not can he dating in my constituency again in his old concert sentiency we have the possibility of going over the party list we have other constituencies of course and so i think there are many many possibilities that both can be in the parliament. you know what happened last week in the state of the rangy it you know your party agreeing to work with the dean this is the far right party to elect the premier a governor there there was a major taboo that was broken do you blame a k k for that i have just one correction yes we voted for a liberal candidate and we didn't vote with the support of the a yes but did we really expect that the if he had an own candidate in the 2 rounds they would vote for their own candidate and then the 3rd round we had the chance to vote for a liberal candidate but we didn't expect that if not voting for that candidate and voting for the labor candidate if i wouldn't do that. and it talks before all working together or anything like that i would have really a problem with that it's a no go where it was reported that that she gave instructions for no deal to be carried out with. that happened so do you do you say do you blame that situation on her inability to be in charge of the part you can blame it on her because response is responsible for the federal level of the party the states have their own leaders of the parties in the states so that is a typical situation all parties face but here is the influence she's supposed to have all of us in the end of the leader of the party has to influence the whole party to go in one direction so of course we'll have the discussion how to yet deal with safety you know cooperation we want to have our own position. we want to make clear if you're conservative you are very good in our party that still plays but nothing 5 more riot that's not conservative that's nationalism that we have to make it quite clear but also we have to integrate and give a real good solution for the conservative people in our country to hold our parties let me ask you about america i mean this is this is a belt on the americal she groomed a.k.k. to replace or she positioned her to become head of the party i mean this is what we're seeing right now is is the miracle legacy projects imploding right before our eyes isn't it all of this is actually uncle america's fault isn't it i wouldn't say fault but sometimes you can plan things so good that the plans really be successful i think the plan was a good 1st step to be a leader of the party then to take responsibility in the government then step by step growing in the position where you are the next chancellor in an election but as an adult come common bob pointed out today there was no peace in the party we had still the discussion even if she was elected as leader of the party who will be the new chancellor we call it the k. question so we always ask the quick a question we always discussed who can be chancellor in 2021 so it wasn't calm there was a study ongoing discussion and i think that brought our pimples also down would you agree that the error of uncle americal her influence in politics would you agree that error in did for good today. i wouldn't say so because i wouldn't wouldn't do it if the difference between chancellery and she is still a strong position as a chancellor in germany with the government was a ministers and on the international level as well because i'm going to medical stands for a clear policy in the different issues and she is responsible for the politics in germany i think it's not the end of an era but of course when she announced that she is not going to dating at chancellor again i think that was the beginning of the end and then believed when had to be as was always the rule before we run out of time you know she's stepping down next year 2021 will your party with the government be able to wait until then. or something have to happen before then it will depends who will be leader of the party and then who will be elected as a candidate for the conservative party for the c.d.u. all right we appreciate you coming in tonight and sharing your thoughts with us thank you welcome. to a nother political earthquake here in europe and the strongest party to emerge from sunday's general election in the republic of ireland is shin fein of the party is historically linked to the ira the irish republican army which fault a bloody and deadly battle against the british in northern ireland should change place in politics in northern ireland is nothing new but south of the border in the irish republic sinn fein ties to sectarian violence well they have been harder to shake until now the same thing leader mary lynn mcdonnell celebrated the result taking nearly 25 percent of the poll that put the party ahead of 2 center right parties which have dominated irish politics for a century the result leaves shin fein on the verge of government with the policy of a united ireland high on its agenda. the election has been described as a seismic and game changing here's what people in dublin had to say. perhaps insane from some sort of a government by one of those insane because the policies and we need to be changed but i think it's best to be on the switch i think we're going to be in a situation again where we're not going to be able to form a stable government in this country. i really don't know what's going to happen but things could have a backlash against you know people are already struggling to get good hazing into your kind really high rents or see a mature situation pushing you more you beat up that's what's coming days i'd like to fish in train form a coalition with anybody else other than me and upon. if not through with opposition and home. all right for more now let's bring in make the field he's the editor of the online news platform and slugger o'toole which focuses on political stories in ireland and britain it makes good to have you on the show let me just start by saying you know from the outside one would expect the irish election to be dominated by breck's it but apparently it was and how do you explain that. well i think. frex it was kind of the elephant in the room of this election certainly on the doorsteps it wasn't i mean own looks it registered 0 in the exit poll as a concern for the way that people decide to to vote but i do think the turmoil of the last. 2 to 3 years has raised a lot of hackles and ireland because you know not only does arnold have its own broadcast media but irish people the length and breadth of the island both in northern ireland and in the republic get british broadcaster restaurant broadcasting every single day so they see everything that was said about arms and everything was said about bret's but the european union and i think that so to certain degree of anti british feeling in the background so despite the fact the threats it was no wasn't an issue as such i think it was very much a conditioning aid in making the irish people more inclined to vote to move towards the on the the the anti british shouldn't think them less opposed to the more moderate centrist finial and is that how you would explain the fact that the you know the established parties in the republic of ireland they've always portrayed shin fein as this political pariah the voters this time didn't buy that and are you saying that it's maybe a result of the brics that reporting that led to shin fame being rehabilitated if you will. i think so i think mainstream opinion as as mainstream opinion in britain got more and more extreme we saw a more and more extreme reaction within the mainstream press in dublin so i think helped set the conditioner on this but let's hear this in perspective. i don't notice inside it has the most proportional form of proportional representation in the world so when you get somewhere around $25.00 or $23.00 or 24 percent you get the amount of seats should be and is the larger the largest number of. votes and it's probably going to sit in around the scene. i mean only slightly have seen a 14 a gale so it's the putting together of the president basically shouldn't be in a got 25 percent i think for the $22.00 and then one roughly one percent behind us feeling gail but how that's working our seats is pretty much the c.m. we've got 3 blocks the earl of close to each other do not want to go into government with each other and although shouldn't be in has the largest of those blocks it still only represents 25 percent of the population it's very difficult we shouldn't be in to go into government on its own because if you with the right of 2 parties because if you toss up the figures the best i can up with. looking out is 62 and they need to get to it in other words hoss the hearts are selected slitter before they can form the next government there are other individual independent votes there but very few of those are on the left of the spectrum most of them are localist or even kind of leaning towards the free market rights were big money so we're not we have a non-germane here. it will be just as we ask you about about shin fein there in northern ireland and in the republic of ireland now i mean we've we've got shin thing as this this impressive political force of both sides of the border now on the entire island i mean what does what does that mean and what does it mean for those who want to unify the i well it certainly brings the agent a little bit further up if they can engineer their way into government either in this stage of negotiations or perhaps just may come to as i said the numbers don't work i think then get used to government on their own or with with like minded parties after an election now i think things begin to change rather i mean a radically particularly if the ifs if they manage to engineer or not before the pressure trade to negotiations are done i think they will they will seek to have the foreign affairs minister. innocuously get direct access to brussels at the same time they can speak with greater starting northern ireland just as city leaders so much and i think you can see a. potential for a cooling of relationships let's put it no more than up between. dublin and london the way i think london us isn't quite expecting to see all right nick bilton with the online news platform sluggards who'll make it fascinating talking with you we appreciate your insights tonight thank you. the 92nd academy awards have made movie history with the south korean film parasite becoming the 1st non english language film to win best picture and the film's director bob junho didn't stop there he went on to pick up 3 other oscars i it was the big surprise of the night and the oscar goes to. parasite was the 1st ever known english language movie to win best picture. as his car although the loons spoke south korean director of bone junho news dot com a subtle about the gap between the rich and poor in modern day sold was the big winner of the night. and a total of 4 awards including best director of football. who paid tribute to one of cinema's all time great directors and fellow nominees. a novel comes home to the. thank you so much as i said when i was young and studying cinema there was a saying that i cough deep into my heart which is the most pass no is the most creative you bet to us from. our great martin scorsese so. thank you i we're 3 in come to the next morning thank you. there were no sin the other big categories but the awards went to the favorites brad pitt won his 1st acting oscar for his supporting both as an laid back stunt man in clinton terran tino's once upon a time in hollywood. and the oscars wouldn't be the oscars without some pundits a collection hyping it told me only have 45 seconds appear which is 45 seconds more than the senate gave john bolton this week. i'm thinking maybe quinn does a movie about it in the end they don't do the right thing. but there was also some good old fashioned fun. and plenty of entertainment. music legend elton john performing his oscar winning original song from the bio pic rocket man. getting when he would in the mood for the infamous because off to parties. and now we want to go to a colleague who survived the after parties entertainment reporter k j bathroom she joins me from los angeles good evening to you k j i want to just say it took 92 years for hollywood to give a non english language film the oscar for best picture this looks like a clear rebuttal to trump's america 1st launch or is it more out so loosely that exactly what it is you nailed it and i i couldn't be happier i mean parasite deservedly. he wins all of the categories makes a major speech but he deserves them when it's just such a well executed film well shot the story the writing everything was great i mean it was one of the few films that most of the people in the academy and fans across this country believe that parasite should definitely have won the award winners last night we had your theme that spread to lord during i mean they provided it to the injection of politics but the rapper eminem he came on stage and performed lose yourself now for our audience why was this a thing well what people forget is that eminem on best original song 17 years ago for the film 8 mile the song was called lose yourself he did not perform the year that he won so they invited him back as a tribute they want to do a tribute to all the past winners of the best original songs they got why not call him a now up to do the famous song that he did not perform 17 years ago and let me tell you everyone in that theater was so shocked to see him on stage and a lot of people i think were just baffled they were trying to say is he and he filmed us you have a new album coming out i didn't really understand at 1st but they enjoy the music nonetheless and what about. the lack of ok we've heard about the lack of diversity among the nominees but if you talk about the people who won if you talk about the people who presented in the people who performed last night i mean you can say that so talk to me about kind of this this dichotomy going on. yeah there really is a disconnect last night of the oscars at least on television it was extremely diverse you had a lot of diverse presenters a lot of diverse performers a lot of women a lot of people of color it looked great however when you look at the nominee category there just weren't a lot a lot of nominees of diversity a woman remember no woman was nominated in the best director category and only one black woman was nominated in the lead actress category so there just wasn't a lot of diversity outside of white males of the nominees so i think the academy felt like they had to kind of make up for in presenting a really diverse and unified oscars last night and i think it went really far. how do you explain i mean you're there in l.a. in hollywood i know that the academy has made changes in the last 2 years i mean the academy itself has tried to become more diverse so why why do you think that is not being reflected in the nominations here here's the problem when you look at it there are changes being made but there are slow changes that's the problem there are more women and people of color in front of the camera in hollywood today than there were chain years ago the problem is the process is slow and really what it's going to take is a change in the top 6 weeks that means the people who run the studios have to hire more government and people of color when it comes to these big blockbuster films that's the first 4 problem the 2nd problem is what the academy the academy is still overwhelmingly white male more than 80 percent and until that changes you're not going to see any major change but those 2 things need to change so that you will see a more diverse pool of nominees when it comes to the oscars all right k.j. matthews on oscar watch worse tonight from los angeles jane is always it's a pleasure talking
