was moved to the oscars for the 1st time a non english language film will be aboard the best picture a movie correspondent has the latest from hollywood. kind of a warm welcome to you i'm a myth i'm cheema we start with some breaking news in german politics the leader of the governing christian democratic union on the c.d.u. has said she's stepping down on a good come card and ballot known as a kid had been widely tipped to succeed when the chancellor retires from politics in about 18 months time her decision to stand on follows the scandal over the involvement of the far right alternative for germany in a reach to election. says her move will not affect the stability of germany's coalition government she has just given a press conference here in berlin here's some of what she had to say. i will not run for chancellor. if as i have an hour as such i will accompany the process of finding a candidate for chancellor ship obviously to you in the future the governor we have passed the resolution by the government executive says session on friday regarding the situation through n.g.o.s and as such my clear position i have no operational whatsoever when the a.f.p. active and the party not delinquent a stance against every scrap of defines us as you did you make every kind of cooperation we have the year for you well if we can be seated more and i stand for a cd in june that does not operate a f d e and clearly stands against his. so that was an agreed to clamp cut and bow speaking a short while ago these are obvious political correspondent give. the studio kid what lies behind a very strong and blunt statement by the woman who's the lead here as. well i think i'm married to a certain degree there's a sense of a of a blame game going on here she said ok i should say she said the chancellorship and the position as party leader of the conservatives in this case go handing her hand in hand now it's interesting that of course it was angela merkel herself the german chancellor who separated those 2 posts back in 2018 and her theory thinking behind that was to make way for a successor not only as party leader but most likely eventually as the concept of chancellor candidate come the next elections and so her thinking was to give someone else in this case a k.-k. who was merkel's annoying to air to really make their own mark on the c.d.u. and to decide what direction the conservatives here in germany want to go in ahead of the next elections which of moments are set to take place by autumn of 2021 and so there certainly seems to be a sense of disappointment from a.k.k. a sense that she feels like she's been let down and of course i think that was also made clear over the weekend as well when. during her trip to south africa spoke out about this scandal in thuringia and made it very clear on her of her opinion on this and that it was simply something that couldn't be undone the fact that the c.d.u. the conservatives have indeed cooperated with the a.f.p. although that appointment in that controversial appointment in thuringia has fallen through but the fact is that they did cooperate with the f.t. and that simply cannot be undone and by merkel voicing her opinion on that that was also a real blow to k.k. and i think that was the 1st indication that she might indeed. so she's feeling somewhat let down we'll continue our conversation in just a moment but let's 1st take a look at the tough ear that. has had as a c.d.u. party leader. it was all smiles to begin with in december 28th and a great crowd karen bauer was elected as marco successor a c.d.u. party leader the former stollen state premier was merkel's hand-picked heir and firmly set her sights on one day filling her shoes as chancellor. her appointment as german defense minister soon after was a chance to prove her worth in a high office but within her 1st year a c.d.u. party leader cracks began to show after a number of gaffes a joke a carnival mocking gender neutral bathrooms sparked oprah from germany's l g b t q i community did it all up in front of the biggest loser toilets these are for men you can't get decide whether they want to stand or sit well paying. while just weeks later a k.k.k. modifier again after she questioned how opinion is manufactured online following calls from german floggers to boycott her policy in european elections. proposals to create an international security zone in syria were also badly received after social democrats said they hadn't been consulted before hand. all the while losses for the conservatives in regional state elections added it's a whole load of criticism but still she vowed to go on. via follow we want the best the brightest minds in this party and everyone should get involved and if someone has a different opinion from me that's a living democracy we can grow with it and i want this union to grow to make us stronger than we are today that's the aspiration that i bring to this party. but it was last week's scandal in the eastern state of thuringia the surge the final seed of doubt in a case of thora to the thuringia of the c.d.u. overstepped party line and cooperation with the far right a.f.d. to elect the new state premier now following her karen bowers resignation the conservative c.d.u. is left with a familiar crisis wondering yet again who can succeed and go america. and that report. correspondent she's with me in the studio. so obviously the c.d.u. is in a bit of a crisis right now but does this also mean a crisis in the german government over the moment it seems that everything is stable in the german government social democrats the junior coalition party in this so-called grand coalition have said that very much willing to continue but of course the personnel debate the personal crisis within the c.d.u. could quickly get out of hand and it depends now on how that develops in the coming weeks and coming months we're expecting to see a new leader of the c.d.u. elected later this year it could be as early as summer but we'll have to wait and see when they next hold that party conference so for now it seems that the government at least is stable and if anything it will be the social democrats today who will be breathing a sigh of relief that it's not them for a change at the center of this crisis and kate who profited from the good come out and bones withdrawal as spotty leader well certainly some of the potential candidates who will be vying to fill her shoes a c.d.u. party leader they look set to profit well one name that's already cropping up quite a lot is free trade mats for my huge drive all of who is very keen to finally take what was snatched away from him a couple of decades ago and become c.d.u. party leader and then run for the chancellor a but if we move away from the c.d.u. was well it certainly could affect the polls we've been seeing just in the last couple of days how are the policies of profited from this scandal in eastern germany so certainly other parties especially the greens on the one hand you are doing extremely well. compared to previous again is they'll be looking to try and see some more of those you votes but at the same time also the f.d.a. has a lot of questions still remain as to how the c.d.u. might go into the next election try. when back the votes that they lost lost to the far right after but indeed after this debacle that we've seen and will be continuing to play out for some weeks and they have to could still indeed profit from this as well because a lot of ramifications keep it from the political desk thank you very much for your analysis. we're now joined by patrick sensible and is a member of the german parliament and a member of the cd you party welcome to you now we could put on a good comic list said how she lost control over the party or do you think she feels let down by her own party executive no i don't think of the party let her down i think she had a very hard time with elections in all states with lots of discussions about who will be the chancellor candidate in the future and i think this is a very tricky situation for all party we are in the time when uncle americal already said she steps back as chancellor and so we are in the transition period in a way that was not a very very easy period for another come combo out so i think that all together was the reason for her to make this decision today but i did come down must move us once again expose deep divisions within the party because afterward she was. anointed successor but it was a bitter election campaign for a party leader what impact do you think how moved now will have on the governing coalition i think there will be no problems in the governing coalition the coalition is working very good we have a stable chancellor we have our ministers i think the people's party so on one side the conservative party and the social democrats of course they have discussions with opinion polls with the elections in the states but federal level the coalition is very stable and is doing good work. now you from this more west german city of be on and saw is one of on a good mean drives fee dick met who will also be perhaps contesting for party leadership do you think he will be the next cd you bought into i think 1st of all we are in a very good position we have more candidates we have more possible. party members that can follow on to get it come combo or other parties would be happy if they would have such personal likes to see do you do it if it would be for the duration merits it's not quite sure yet but i think he's in a very good position he did lots of work on the basis of the party in the last weeks and months and i think a lot of party members trust him having the capability and the political background to bring together a conservative group and the party of the liberals and also the christian based groups in the party so he could integrate and not divide the party. to patrick sense but a member of germany's c.d.u. party thank you very much for talking to us. always welcome. so let me now bring you up to date with some of the
