A welsh nationalist party. We have Team Coverage all night tonight joining me in studio to help break down the u. K. Election we have u. K. Politics expert bob muglia rob evans with d. W. News and standing by for us in london is the correspondent barbara vais a barber we want to start with you now we just walked through those exit poll results we do know that now there are some real results starting to trickle in whats the latest in terms of what youre seeing from the constituencies in the u. K. Well what are they reporting. As the councillor coming in this night looks like a block boss to come for the labor party because seats are really tumbling like dominos in the north in the northeast and these are as you mentioned seats that have been held by decades for the labor party as so this is really it and complete the blow to the party that is devastating and that is almost annihilating because he cannot really imagine what would be left off to a night like this from the party of what the tories are obviously what is obviously happening is that the tories managed to make huge inroads into the northern socalled northern wall that was all this traditional labor seats in the north and north east where for decades nothing had changed being a party member was almost tribal you were bored into the party and you died was the party so that is breaking down it looks like the end of an era there is complete to overthrow the off the Political Landscape in britain and this is what we are experiencing from our to our now because it just seems to go forward and if the trend continues like this it might very well be that the xs polls turn out to have been right. Those exit polls projecting a landslide victory for Boris Johnsons party you mean this could be the largest majority since the days of Margaret Thatcher oh how did they perform so well well whats behind that success. Well i think the Boris Johnson has managed to do is win the election over with a very very Simple Campaign promise and that was to get briggs it done basically if you followed Boris Johnson join this campaign that is more or less all that he has said for all the Anti Campaign in funds some people believe that his mind isnt told him to keep his mouth anything else said vince so they dont risk jeopardize. Being the outcome of the election thats been the focus of this campaign get briggs it done and well bob who was talking about some of these seats that were seeing these storms labor seats fall into the conservative policy in the northeast of england for example im sure the braggs it to get briggs more so will certainly be the be the b. Was persuaded lots of the labor voters in those polls of the country to vote conservative this time around because many of them were labor supporters but also voted for during that referendum now as we sit here we try to make sense of the results of course the early editions of the british newspapers theyre already in they have their spin lets just go through some of those headlines right now these are hot off the presses this is how theyre describing it you see the daily express a victory for boris and a victory for breakfast daily mail saying rejoice in capital letters their board said for a thumping when on the other hand a nightmare before christmas potentially says the daily mirror and then the view from scotland saying scotland is a different country but well get to scotland in a 2nd but i want to come to you now because you know we see those headlines we hear on the once one hand rejoice on the other hand a nightmare misses a divided country depicts how polarized country is but also the media but its all part of election the coverage the next day that these pigs will poke fun. I think when when the country wakes up. Probably with a massive headache. With the would rejoice. I think you know for the down the line some people may come. See. What this actually means for the country Going Forward in the meantime isnt there a sense perhaps from some many of these voters that voted conservative saying hey look these 3 and a half years that youve put us through with this budget process this listen their vote the voters mind this is over they might be thinking that. So then if we look at the nitty gritty i mean i think these are named stone they see and ones we enter the transition phase which is spent by the end of 2020 and August Johnson has said that he knew it was a good deal. By the end of next year. I would just point out i think the canada deal to 10 years to get. For the votes is yes theyve i think they finally see the. Democratic votes as being fulfilled but you know further down the line. I see those sorts of problems or indeed i think also its worth mentioning that you know many of these areas the moving now from labor to conservative in this election is you know this is a very depressed areas and i think that one of the achievements of the conservative campaign in a way has been to destruct the blame of these peoples woes and happiness and put it at the door of the European Union rather than people saying well you know things in my area are not going well if you do i blame the i blame the government if they have actually reelection the government because the governments success the money is to blame the European Union. Shes in london for us when i come back to you barbara now youve been covering this election youve been covering all the events since the rights of referendum for so long was bracks and was this the Biggest Issue for voters during us a lodger. It seems to have been much bigger than we service thought in the end because you had the feeling throughout the last 2 weeks during the selection complaining that there was talk about a lot of things when you listen to the public debate so i went to one of the hustings where the candidates were defending their positions and you heard people talking about the n. H. S. The truly Ailing Health system here in britain you heard people talking about schools you heard people talking about the Police Station local regional Police Station that was to be shut so these were like the real problems of people but it seems what we all underestimated and maybe a lot of the commentators in london london based commentators underestimated is how how deeply felt this issue was particularly in the north where there was the big majority for break that it was more often emotional more of an identity thing then as something that would be rationally dealt was and saying we dont really know about it how else could you explain that people are wrong sunderland were one of the last big Car Manufacturers sits in britain that people there and workers there voted for breaks it more or less sort of throwing away their own jobs so if there are different and very very. Tensions sort of add work here they dont conform to the patterns we have known from the past. Now rob lets talk on the other hand about labor this is shaping up to be a massive loss i mean falling under 200 seats we havent seen that in in some 7 or 8 decades a loss of 71 seats right now projected where did labor go wrong. In a nutshell Jeremy Corbett i think you just proved to be. Popular. I think in that sense on. The popularity contest. And it did probably didnt help that he has been sitting on the fence breaks it for so long his stance is. And then you look at the manifesto that made rashly put forward which would have saved massive investments in welfare and education and h. S. But that obviously didnt resonate at all. Better do you think it differently leader of labor to have done better because if you look at the task he had he had voters who supported labor but but also supported bracks at that is a difficult line to use a different difficult line to walk i think i think he probably thought that he could carry over what he achieved in the election 2017 where he against the odds managed to cut into the tories lead so much the. Reason why it didnt get a majority. It is difficult line to tread but. I think the only way to go forward now is for him to resign i think he is untenable and thats a new figure well have to try and pick up the pieces which will be a massive toss of either and i think you know the irony here is that weve had a disastrous government mean by anyones by any benchmark this is been a disastrous government and Boris Johnson is a deeply divisive and broadly unpopular Prime Minister so the labor Opposition Leader has been unable to make a dent in the in the conservative numbers in fact has allowed this landslide victory that speaks volumes about Jeremy Corbin his leadership of the labor party and all those people will be waiting for the results to come in obviously and to be finalized i think if these results set out to be correct and im sure that they will turn out to be broadly correct then the calls for jeremy his resignation will be very loud and we promise we talked and of course our other parties in the selection of the s. N. P. Party the Scottish National party. Did very well potentially gaining 20 seats. What does that search mean for britain and potentially another independence referendum for scotland. Well the end of the day an independence referendum kind of course i would say place if that is allowed by westminster and with this kind of majority it can be blocked theres no doubt about that of course nonetheless if these results we have say that some of these some of these seats installed in the marginal side might not be quite this we that weve been predicting for the s. N. P. Nonetheless the the moral strength of the argument for a 2nd referendum is of course enormous because. Whats at stake is that this stage much more than Scottish Independence but the scottish membership of the European Union because if you remember of course in that referendum the majority of the votes in scotland was in favor remain so this is much more strength of the arguments that we do not want to go the way the other parts of the country are going to go our own way. Venture to say that if you know westminster puts a spanner in the works in terms of another referendum we could even see something minds of civil disobedience i think they could be able to sorts of problems if its cold and not have to leave it there are plenty more to talk about thank you very much. Joining me in studio and there in london for us covering the u. K. Election thank you so much. Well in other news germany has hit back at u. S. Plans to penalize Construction Companies working on a controversial gas project the north stream 2 pipeline will carry russian natural gas to germany washington says that is a Security Risk because it makes europe more dependent on russia for lennon says the 10000000000 euro pipeline is vital to its energy needs in fact German Foreign minister eichel moss says European Energy policy is decided in europe the us the u. S. Plans to impose sanctions on companies and individuals involved in the pipeline project that includes german as well as other European Companies the penalties include travel bans and asset freezes companies continuing with north stream to could find themselves cut off from doing business in the u. S. The u. S. Lawmakers fear the pipeline could give moscow greater leverage over the german and e. U. Energy markets german politicians disagree we in europe think we can decide. For ourselves about our own Energy Security and diversity and i personally do not buy the argument that the United States saying we are making ourselves more dependent or maybe even completely dependent by russian oil and gas deliveries russias gas pramono majority stake in the 1200 kilometer long pipeline which will transport natural gas under the baltic sea from russia directly to germany circumventing ukraine and other Eastern European countries the project is more than 90 Percent Complete and is scheduled to start operating in mid 2020 north stream to has the potential to double the amount of natural gas germany imports from russia the country needs more gas to ensure Energy Supplies remain stable as it phases out the use of coal and nuclear power. And as germany goes green policy makers here suspect washington is also worried about the business saying goal of north stream to. You was obdurate the u. S. Produces liquid for trillium gas using the fracking method my Carbon Footprint is worse than coal and they have trouble selling it here on the European Market because they arent competitive that develops peace and whatever the u. S. Motives President Trump says he will sign the bill into law and implemented as soon as possible. Russia and germany are working together on the north stream to project but the 2 countries are also mired in an escalating diplomatic route over the murder of a georgian citizen in berlin. But the german ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in moscow on thursday morning to be told that russia was expelling 2 german diplomats they have 7 days to leave the country the kremlin says now the reasons why. The diplomatic being expelled as a force to return here to measure this measure is unavoidable to have our diplomats were expelled we consider that decision by berlin absolutely baseless we disagree with it so this is the inevitable response. The spat is over the killing in august of 0 in kind of congo surely but georgian who fought for the separatists in the chechen war he was shot in the head twice at close range in a battle in park the suspect a russian citizen was soon arrested german prosecutors suspect russia could be implicated in the killing but say moscow has refused to cooperate in the investigation thats why germany last week expelled 2 Russian Diplomats the russian government denies any involvement lawmakers in berlin have condemned russias expulsion of 2 german diplomats you had to get inside of russias decision comes as no surprise to anybody. About the no it conveys however the wrong message. And in terms of the matter at hand its entirely unjustified. Russias response shows it has a guilty conscience and we expect russia to help clear up the murder was modest that investigation is still underway in the meantime tensions between germany and russia show no signs of easing. Lets take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world the u. S. Senate has formally recognized the killing of 1500000 armenians between 1915900 17 as a genocide the resolution is expected to anger turkey which has always denied that there was an organized mass murder senator bob menendez said the u. S. Was quote on the right side of history. The u. S. Has also test fired a missile over the pacific that had long been banned under a treaty between the United States and russia the arms treaty was abandoned last song. Amid deteriorating relations arms control advocates say that the tests risks fueling an arms race between the countries. Polling stations of close in algeria after a very tense president ial election there in some cities protesters attempted to disrupt voting in an election that they see as aimed at keeping the established political system in place algeria has been in limbo for months since protests helped oust longtime president adel aziz. New Zealand Police say they have recovered the bodies of 6 people who died during the volcanic eruption on white island off the countrys northeastern coast 2 other people are missing and are presumed dead it was a very risky operation scientists have warned that gases on the island after mondays eruption are so toxic that taking a single breath could be fatal. Well for more on the Recovery Mission im joined by chris a power meter shes a reporter in auckland new Zealand Chris a 1st of all hows the recovery operation going so given the Police Commissioner said this is not over yet they for treeview 6 bodies this morning but they do believe that there are still 2 victims remaining there on the island right. Correct this morning new zealand time a Defense Force team of 8 successfully recovered 6 bodies from the white island. Operation itself started at 8 am local time and it took 4 hours from when they land until they had to call for the bodies on to the navy ship wellington they were placed in coffins and will be received by families at the airport a coastal town 50 kilometers from white island before they are flown to auckland later this evening for i didnt identify ation purposes there are still 2 bodies believed to be on the island the operation is not over yet Police Believe at least one of the remaining 2 bodies could be in the water surrounding the island they have to throw a dive squad into the waters and further aerial searches are carry out are carried out this action and. Christa do we know why this operation was given the green light were hearing how dangerous this was how even breathing a breath of air was potentially fatal what led to the response to just say hey lets go and lets try to get these bodies. Well it sure has been an emotional event for the police both the local community and particularly for the families and friends of the victim. I think its due to the mounting pressure from families and locals who who are wanting to take matters into their own hands and now they are ready to hear that the operation went to plan during the press conference earlier the Police Commissioner was thankful to the 8 person Team Involved 6 now and 2 woman and he is hopeful all of the bodies can be identified but he cannot absolutely guarantee it crowd gathered by the waters in phuket overlooking the island cheered when they heard the bodies were recovered but there was also sadness for the 2 bodies not yet uncovered mounting pressure from locals and families resulted in this risky yet Successful Operation although as the Police Commissioner mentioned it is not over yet not until they were treated the other 2 bodies are not over yet chris of hermes in auckland new zealand for us thanks very much. On a 3 year vendetta to get someone that they couldnt beat and theyre desperate to do it before he beats him again next year. A large area has been holding an election which was supposed to restore stability after a very turbulent year but only around one in 5 voters are thought to have turned out much of the population took part in a mass boycott tens of thousands rallied in central algiers and others stormed polling stations. Police charging anti election protesters and in attempt to clear the streets of algiers many were caught in the wrong place at the wrong time but despite the mass showing from Security Forces and the many arrests demonstrators refused to disperse they came out in the thousands calling on algerians to reject an election and a government they see is corrupt all 5 president ial candidates have close links with the establishment leading many to see the poll as a strategy to avoid genuine change. And no we are not against elections were against this gang thats it they know that the elections will not happen they will not take place and we will not found down never its impossible to go back that. There were large protests in various parts of the country and this polling station in the countrys mountainous berber region was ransacked with protesters destroying ballot boxes and some electoral lists the mass prodemocracy demonstrations led to the resignation of president of the lizzies beautifully last april after 2 decades in power but that wasnt enough voters to say they want a complete replacement of the countrys political elite and theyre worth a lot and we dont know who to vote for the politicians have nominated 5 of their own. Do you think we should vote for and who is the good one none of them are good because they were all in power. Who did that you know going to. The demonstrators say they wont accept the results of this election and they wont stop pushing for democratic reform.
