About. Changing tide in german politics those were the words of. The leader of the brandenburg. Party who made the headlines here in recent weeks because there was more evidence of his far right past this is something that if he continues to brush off as past days and says he wants to claim a new Center Ground after all the f. T. Sees itself as the only true representatives of the people that something they keep putting on their election posters as well. We are the people so this is the kind of push theyre trying to make here to become more mainstream and a stronger force and politics. Ok were going to cross over to the press conference which is just getting under way right now the far right d. Having his postelection press conference. Still struggling with the traffic hell be here in a moment a statement on him which i can understand the same start with i still like him very much for my god very good morning ladies and gentlemen with quotes statements and were going to tell us about his you know grief statements here because im sure there are plenty of questions that people would like to put to us let me say 1st of all that it is clear that these 2 elections happen one when out that is the alternative for germany but im all for me hearties have lost around with the exception of the green up our terms even had a slight increase in their skills well behind us or kind of set ourselves so that theyre not very happy with it and i thought by the way we are something shed be cathartic i was asked yesterday a number of times so you know whether we are unhappy because we want the strongest any each state but the answer has to be if weve doubled our results and won and nearly tripled our results in the other how can we be unhappy clearly we have been merged massively victorious in all of our country im going to be honest about that also like to say that this is the 1st time that the f. T. Has been really elected into parliament by this country because this was the 2nd attempt and weve got better already said that we were going to lose ground that with the predictions of let me just say the opposite was clearly the case. Because i think every election because part of it by time its what we are established as a pop at a party i was asked on the radio today. I think it storage time finite you asked whether we were popular protest party you know we dont protest party we have a clearly defined political programs addressing the issues are today and have clearly come across to the electorate as a Reliable Party and the result as its not going to exactly that yesterday i said it and ill say it again here sometimes talk about eastern germany stay. Dark germany i think its a delight germany certainly there are a lot brighter sparks over there than we also where and this is based on the for historical relations. With the european politicians may come across here and i like to compare us with its neighbor youd be aware the fact that the league i would use to be the nigga know it has also assured of change and they have now spread across italy and is indeed the dominant politically Popular Party there and thats the direction that were moving towards them but its not coming from the north like in italy that rather from the east of germany one last item on and on through switched on politics and were seeing this you know very sort of initiate. Laws and others follow them and run with them as it were so i dont have an option not to govern as we fear it but that doesnt mean we cant be a Strong Opposition Party which it will be it will be an Even Stronger opposition but Everybody Knows it and will be confronting coalitions that will be very fragile even if its possible to find Coalition Partners in one case its not clear theyll be Tripartite Coalition troops and theyre not particularly strong so well have an incredibly strong opposition and a very fragile governing coalition. And it may not be that will it may be that we wont manage the full term i understand as a result of this but were certainly looking forward to an excellent parliamentary work give the floor room to alexander counted on it actually i give the floor so let me give you floor to stake out i havent said a word yet. Well i can follow want to ear set quite seamlessly hair everything you said is obstinately true 2 aspects id like to draw your attention through in france abroad. Were the only serious popular opposition parties there are. Popular party majorities in. Other cards delish constellations but if you look at the brandenburg city you and the results of the saxony c. D. U. You have to say that needs france or big city followed americas course and was more or less marginalized with 15. 5 percent. And grants abroad so they are no longer a popular Opposition Party then and. Saxena c. D. U. Has sent out a signal i would say in the right direction there was mr massa mr potts. And therefore. I am confident that perhaps not in the short term but certainly in the medium term there will be a popular majority. Because. I think mr martin said quite rightly if youre talking about chai apartheid coalition. Constellations it will be very difficult for the functionary level in the c. D. U. Particularly in saxony where the city is very conservative it would be very difficult to justify. Not even speaking to the f. T. It was all lost at any price so im just going to lean back and watch how that pans out. We have a result in a selection that does not allow the other parties to. Exclude does we will be defining the issues in this federal state now mr carvilles. Thank you very much its not going to surprise you that i am of course very pleased about this outstanding results for i believe its down to a High FrequencyElection Campaign but also due to the fact. That i work has been acknowledged in the last term of office in science and it is not the case as i think many people would have liked to seen at least by our political opposition that we are all revealing ourselves here this is wrong im also very pleased about it we have a much higher turnout weve often heard that a lower. And lower turnout would be bad for us. Im interested in theirs too because its going to be very interesting to see how the other parties will behave and whether or not theyll be democratic whether theyre going to continue to have a sort of blockade against us therefore excluding the voices of one quarter of the electorate or whether well find compromises we certainly didnt in the Election Campaigns. State premier the void by focused on. The sort of image of his enemies the whole time rather than coming up with actual issues and so im looking forward to good parliamentary opposition work the established. Parties will struggle i think with us. And weve seen in the last term in office that the social democrat the left quite see this as a coalition struggle of the times we are very confident were going to build on our successes thats clear another thing thats come across is that the a. M. T. Has come to stay we are above all Popular Party in eastern germany now and we will continue along with his craft and to my terms are decided. Opposition we are strong. We can live with this success. After such a short period to have received such gains and of course well have to work towards. The goals by being in opposition now we would like to come to your questions perhaps you can say who youre addressing a question to and we begin with mr khan off. Questions the doctor might and. You have said you have a program for all areas of policy. And im not quite clear what your position is on some subjects. And youve talked about the success of the f. D. A. In east in germany. So i wonder if you could just tell us a bit more just so youre 21 and thats the other 2 aspects id like to respond to here is your side took a bit of time not to work out what political positions were i think it was good that only took our time to do this because you dont want to do this in the middle of a state election in this i think what youre going to see them is that we need to find a common musician here and some things take time for side like you know we agree on. Jack to vhs. I want you to the issue is that those who have worked for a very long time should significant or yelling as you go by to have more access to benefits for a longer period of time and i think this is set out in all of our concepts where we do disagree and we have disputes within our own party on this and so we should i think thats going to sound approach then is as to how to finance these things are a number of approaches here and until we have a Party Congress we will have ironed out all the wrinkles here and well have a good part to that we can all agree on in the congress so this is something where we still have to iron out a few wrinkles here in terms of arc Party Programs but weve always said this and i think in the other cases of policy we have already got a clear position that we have to tweak a few things around pensions but it wont take long to budge and i say it again and again the other Political Parties have had decades of times to work on these issues and the s. P. D. And cd you have to get to get responsibility as a government and they still havent come out with a decent pension. Plans you know they were sort of doing a patchwork of bridges here were doing it from an up. Decision positionally not in the in the government so whether its 3 or 4 months later and for it doesnt matter by the time we are any government. Position of power we will have worked on that call because before we proceed to the next question mr irvine has made it through it is the statement that the traffic so perhaps since were already doing the q. And a well have to do without your statement sort of it now as a question. In print the questions are very difficult here please bear with. Perhaps you just a bit about your position on like and these on your on the immigration in fact and what accusation is quite clear that the media sometimes twists it during the facts and unlike you actually campaigning ive said again and again in many speeches people do with a migration that background accepts ballyards and legal system if you live among us peacefully you have families iraq of weapons and we have become germans are german this year about any if and thats but some people accuse us of not seeing things this way thats not true and this is true for millions of people but where we are clearly and categorically i can state that migration is illegal migration by its happening at the moment and not just either mediterranean right and there we say we cannot continue because this form of unequal migration is something we want to stop completely and we will not budge on the ice. Its just bizarre. And hakeem used to actually get pretty good at it so thats a shot. More to the heart. Of all it will me share with. You. This is your flight for tomorrow. The off. Insults and the best occupiers of your tossed off to you about you know about bush about your talk in the bundesliga and this wouldnt work or even are on a national and on a european youre not on my have achieved results of this even though we had a massive resistance not just from the other Political Parties but for the movement to be an entire media from the trade unions its atrocious the law from what kyoto would survive t. V. Actors from churches that structure and just mr meeson why we arent Even Stronger generally wouldnt i know do not have a say on conditions as other parties do is a very unfair Election Campaign and saxony some of the lest was the least of whats going on ive got a 100 its western not against the other parties do not have to deal with this kind of. Blowback and this is why we only have the result that we have thought storm or you can make a lot of way about the situation and brandenburg was much the same and at the end in the final stage of the elections we saw. Voters going from the green party to the s. P. L. Off so i think the aim was to stop the f. T. Being the strongest highlighting of the situation was much the same in saxony actions the green card to pay the price for this but are still shows this fire election turnout shows that there is room for even more improvement it would have been great to be the strongest Political Party but we will work with what weve got were talking about how we can and set up the Inquiry Committee says such as were going to create this effect things differently in the world of politics i think that sucks about this mix and mechanism like that girl its a fact in saxony as well you know sort of joining the ranks against the f. Team and this may be the case in the formation of the government but whether or not this is a sound coalition. Remains to be seen i already discussed the instability that i would think were going to have what we already had in brandenburg go in with the social democrats the left party as a try quite a coalition to be even worst cd was marginalized here so. Be interesting to see how things continue to develop. And the next question will be from the back. Its. To get this through here you will just see. Its in there its just all. You know its the root. Of all those feelings in. Rooms. As. Good as about poison is what it was aside from you like my dog about a psych that off the director for votes along on the start givens it doesnt really going on often on sean strategy 1st just with doc stark of all this and as you mention up going through in i think i dont think less of an awesome on killing field any further into the unknown i was its really an offer to run but i see now is it and some of the referral areas and plantains i can this is a logical consequence of the fact that these social democrats left Party Coalition is ignored in rural areas and has just chose not the wrong policy approach and Good Governance the constellations and the Parliamentary Group well lets see this on the constitution and its this with a session that was on. So there is a technical problem with that kind of one. Which is. I think its not a good thing and weve just been watching a Live Press Conference from central berlin here from the alternative for germany the far right party that just following the 2 elections in the states of brandenburg and saxony just to help use figure out who weve been seeing there on the right of your screen the 2 gentlemen there are the cochairs of the party and on the left of your screen we had the main candidates for the a. F. D. Party in saxony and brenda burke our Political Correspondent our chief Political Editor rather hdmi cable his there at the press conference and has been following it mikhail whats your impression of whats been said so far. Well things have interesting that at the end we heard. The coleader of the f. T. There saying he shouldnt get ahead of itself it does keep protesting that it is allegedly only a protest party we heard from the regional candidates who are very upbeat. So you start to the left of mr garland speaking of changing times and xander gallants the party leader noticing with some visible satisfaction after all he is a former c. D. U. Politician he used to belong to the magical c. D. U. Party that there are parts of saxony christian democrats who indeed would like to talk to the far right party at the same time we heard the party leader and it had come this morning once again rule out any dialogue with the far right if t. So theres no talk of going let alone going into coalition with them this is something that is a no go for all other parties right now so that leads the h. D. Rather isolated but as you heard very upbeat this morning after these very successful regional actions for them i found it really interesting the kilo what your more its been one of the coleaders of the Tea Party Circuit the beginning of this press conference he began by making a comparison between his party and the league party before it leaked party in italy just saying that he could have a future ahead of itself similar to that what do you make of. Heres him also made a point at this now was a point where the if he got reelected into Regional Park parliament and and its true that some parties saw them as a you know one election a phenomenon a couple of years back but they have gone a very long way in this 6 year history from being an anti Euro Currency party to becoming an anti Migration Party now claiming to be and they said this here is well the next Big Tent Party in germany so clearly they want to succeed. C. D. U. And the social democrats as being a Big Tent Party here in germany the Legal Comparison i think is very interesting because. The leader not actually was rooted in dissatisfaction of the rich more industrialized north of italy. Really not also partly not wanting to pay for the poor south now here its a bit simpler of us with the strength of the f. T. Being clearly in those Eastern States of germany who are still economically less successful but and i must add that saxony in particular where they have such a strong showing is the economically most successful state in the east of dome and theres a lot of contradictory evidence were getting also talking to voters polling shows that upwards of 80 percent feel economically satisfied with their own situation but certainly amongst if the vote is more than 70 percent feel still are 2nd class citizens because theyre from the east and this is an issue theyve tapped into and the evidence weve seen shows more that they managed to succeed the left party as the party that understands that use a lot more than those other parties so we have 2 Election Results from out of germany 16 states we have the actually in brandenburg where the d. Have both gotten about a quarter of the vote in those states a big surge in support almost doubling their support but does this tell us anything about the strength of the d. The strength of the far right in germany as a whole. Well it tells us 2 things about the east is their home turf quite clearly. Is nowhere near getting above 20 something percent as they did in these 2 Eastern States in the former west of germany so there still is this east west divide but there are also divisions within society that they are clearly tapping into and thats the dissatisfaction with what is perceived to be the political elite that is the narrative they keep playing on and what weve seen here its a very small sample of voters there has not been an overall massive shift to the right in germany this sample is simply too small to say that it just so happens that the next elections coming up will be in to bring in october and thats where the extreme right wing of the 50 really dominates the party would be. Figurehead so were likely to see potentially an Even Stronger showing there of the far right if de one thing weve learned is that theyre here to stay but theyve failed in these elections to significantly destabilize the governing coalition of anglo machall they didnt succeed in being able to claim that they brought her final term in office down through by beating particularly the social democrat s. P. D. Which is having its very own party just distance but we could talk for 10 minutes about that. Miguel thank you very much for putting all that in context for us do ws mickael of cruft our chief Political Editor at the f. T. Party conference here in central berlin.
