A breakthrough victory in one or 2. Im assuming some us going to thank you for joining us for a special coverage here on d w polls are about to close in Regional Elections in 2 states in eastern germany with possible significant consequences for chancellor Angela Merkels government in berlin as well the voters in the states of funding both in saxony have been casting their ballots until now both states have been governed by traditional establishment parties of the social democrats were s. P. D. And chancellor merkels christian democrats the c. D. U. Base but this time both parties are facing a stiff challenge from the far right alternative for germany the a. F. P. The latest opinion polls show that the party is running neck and neck with the s. P. D. M. One bug and just a few points behind michaels c. D. U. In saxony. Well we have complete coverage of these potentially pivotal elections on we have a Political Correspondent with us here in our studio and we have our chief Political Editor. At the city you Party Headquarters also here in berlin michelle lets start with you so what could these elections mean for the government of chancellor angela merkel. But also the they do have the potential to set off a chain of events that could endanger mackerels self declared final term as german chancellor coming to an abrupt and but where fall way from that most of all they show the decline of the big tent policies that is are going to christian democrats on the social democrats who are both in a tough battle with the far right if tea in those 2 regional states who are going to the polls today michel and given those stakes there or here rather in berlin what is the atmosphere like there at the c. D. U. Party headquarters tonight. But its not as tense as one might expect there is an expectation here that yes this will eventually have an effect but the conservative c. D. U. Is a bit more relaxed now that theyve seen the latest opinion polls and early exit polls which at least suggests that they may have a Comfortable Lead of a couple of Percentage Points ahead of the far right if tea party so potentially they will be more concerned about the fate of their Coalition Partner in central Central Government and the social democrat s. P. D. Party it has been in government in brandenburg the state that surrounds but in almost 3 decades since german reunification and if that comes to an end which may well happen today they may well be beaten by the far right a de passy that could be a blow that could set off yet another nervous breakdown within the. The democrats at the same time it has to be said that the far right if he is far from phony government because nobody wants to go into coalition with them both recently and will set the federal level ok lets come to you know listening to what me has said there the c. D. U. May be a bit more calm tonight after looking at some of those initial exit poll results and we will be getting some concrete exit poll results towards the top of the hour but the social democrats as we just heard from michele have seen their support in the book where theyve governed since the fall of the wall really a road over the years so they must be looking to tonight with apprehension yes absolutely i think the social democrats are looking at the world with apprehension at the moment particularly tonight. They are almost certain to lose governing in brandenburg state the one that surrounds burden and also in saxony where they have been part of a coalition its not clear whether they will be able to continue with. The sort of democrats have been declined have been in crisis for months and all at the moment they are with all the proper leadership because they are busy really finding a new leader reelecting a new leader so they are really in a bad state at the moment one has to say tonight is not going to make them feel much better presume already in a bad state and we have to mention again they are still part of the governing coalition here in berlin all right lets take a closer look at vandenberg now this is a state that has traditionally been a left leaning social democratic stronghold as we heard but that could be about to change the far right has been gaining ground there fast because the state that surrounds the german capital berlin which is traditionally left leaning it has the 2nd lowest population density in germany 2500000 people live there all the areas near berlin and the state capital parts and have enjoyed rapid growth all other parts are struggling especially the southern part of bonn but they have become depopulated some areas have only half as many residents as well. The berlin wall came down 30 years ago one big employer there is coal mining some 4500 people worked in the coal mines in funding book south and many people there are concerned about their livelihoods amid government plans to end all Coal Production in germany. And lets go to plan and work our correspondent Thomas Sparrow is now with the alternative for german b. S. T. At their Election Party there and thomas you are in a town called there and tell us why youre there this is a place i understand that has a lot of the support. The a. F. P. Chose a bad for its hockey today for its election is right here only in a few minutes where you will receive those results on as you can see behind me to sterling very quickly and they are certainly expecting a positive result for the party some of the signs right behind me say stand up where history is going to be made theyre expecting to become the 1st pati the Strongest Party here but that is still unclear neck to neck with the social democrats and weve spoken to some officials here who have said that even if they dont become the strongest policy they would still see that as a victory because of the popularity that they have caught in the possible yes its important to me to stress that thats popularity is not something just recently in the last few weeks they have been growing in the last few years on that posh of the house to do with the fact that here in rotterdam but but also you know the parts of eastern germany there is a sense of dissatisfaction a sense of disappointment with the way traditional Political Parties have managed a situation here in the east whether were talking about employment whether were talking about infrastructure whether were talking about the economy on down has made a lot of people doubt about the traditional parties and move rather to Political Parties but the far right alternative for germany. Thats why many people here today are expecting such a good result and thats also why sumeet be if he has focused on presenting itself in a way as a party of the east. Thomas as youve been speaking were just seeing behind us legally produced a video featuring the cesa of the air steve there in bundaberg thats who is himself a controversial figure which well talk about a little bit later but you said that people there i feel disappointed by the traditional parties and indeed in the European Elections in may we saw the f. T. Come out the Strongest Party in london book so what policies does the a. S. D. Stand for i mean where have they been able to pick up votes. Something like an easy answer sumi would be to say that its because of the migration crisis a few years ago i would say the migration price a few years ago brought through the whole feelings our world ready to present here in brandenburg before god referred to this is a point but that many people have felt 30 years after german reunification the fact that many here feel that they are 2nd class citizens and what happened a few years ago with the refugee crisis was that many people didnt understand why so much money and so much attention was being given to refugees coming to the country and so little attention to people here in the eastern part of the country if you clearly look at the topics that worry the people the most here migration is not one of the top topics it is about a 3rd or 4th depending on the difference of if you look at the key topics here refer to infrastructure to employment to education and those are all issues where people feel that more could have been done by traditional parties in the last few years and the a c. Has tapped into that uncertainty into that dissatisfaction by presenting itself as a party that kind of dress those problems and it seems at least for the f. T. To have been positive because in fact in recent years they have had a surge in popularity they have managed take away votes from some of the traditional parties the big question here is whether that will be enough to make the a stronger. Or whether the social democrats to get speedy that have been in power here in this region since 990 will manage to keep that 1st position and will manage to form a government because even if the money just to be. Here the Strongest Party here it does not mean that they will be able to form a government because all of the parties have already vowed that they will not try and form a coalition with the far right if indeed a lot at stake there and fun for tom aspera will be coming back to a little bit expecting all the polls close in about 5 minutes from now and then well get some exit poll results and come back to you thomas lets take a closer look at the german state of saxony now where todays other big vote is taking place saxony is the state with the highest population density in eastern germany of 4000000 people live there it is also the region with the eastern germany strongest economy the car industry is a big employer there and the area around dresden also attracts Technology Companies but extreme far right violence is becoming a problem and saxony having a risen nearly 50 percent in the year 2018 alone all right time to head over to sex and hes our capital city a where did he escape brady is standing by for us our kate tell us what the situation is like down there who seems to have the momentum going in their favor at this point. Well at least according to the polls earlier this week it did seem that chancellor Angela Merkels conservative c. D. U. Had gained back a little bit of ground but some some of the polling polls that we saw earlier this afternoon looks as though things are getting a little bit closer between the c. P. U. On the fall of i d with the currently polling at around 28 percent this afternoon but of course we should be expecting those exit polls any moment now the drama here though could really come up when the if indeed conservative c. D. U. Comes out as the strongest pasi the drama here will be when and how they manage to form a coalition of the conservatives that like every other quasi here in saxony is already ruled out forming a coalition with the far right a. F. P. And with the other posses polling thats only in the teens and itll be quite difficult to form a group together and also a group of Coalition Parties that want to Work Together and have policies that they want to develop together to. There in dresden well come back to you in a little bit as soon as we get those exit poll results i want to come to you now to pick up on what kate and thomas and michelle have been talking about what do you think here has been the failing lets say of the christian traditional parties to really pick up some of the voters that they have lost in the past few years but what were seeing is in fact this to this Traditional Party landscape has been eroding for quite a while in germany not only in germany one has to say elsewhere in europe as well and so these big traditional parties like the conservatives and the social democrats have somehow managed to stay in touch with the feelings of the people with the kind of sentiment amongst the voters there has been some feeding that since they have been in coalition governing germany together these 2 parties for many many years and that there have been some kind of fatigue both on the part of the parties and on the part of the voters who voted them in at the same time you obviously have issues that have. Come to the fore such as Environmental Issues particularly in recent months which the traditional parties have not really paid much attention that much attention to have not really got a strong hand and that has favored other parties such as the greens at the same time obviously there is a dissatisfaction among certain groups of voters and this dissatisfaction has been taken up by the right wing populist by the f. T. They have managed to turn that into support for their party and to protest votes really from both the left and the rights of the traditional parties have been losing were just about a minute and a half away from those exit poll results that we have been anxiously awaiting but what do you think the consequences will be for chancellor merkel and her government here in berlin. Biggest question is how well or how badly the social democrats through because that will have a big influence on what happens in this leadership choice that the social democrats have to complete within the next couple of months and there is the possibility that the social democrats at the grantham father the rank and file will say we do not want to continue in this coalition with Angela Merkels government if that is the case the government could fall apart pretty quickly if the social democrats do fairly well today i think that would also fairly well for the coalition with im going to knock those conservatives and we should say you just touched upon it the rise of the greens has also been Something Interesting to watch in these 2 states so absolutely yes in the in the eastern germany the green party has been all well on nonexistent would be incorrect but they have not been very strong until very very recently they have been scrambling also nationally to find enough for personnel to find enough money to actually represent the kind of strength that they have in these countries in these federal states as well as in germany as a whole or at times and we should say that we did see some statistics showing that turnout in and sat there and we are going to be looking ahead now to the exit polls we want to bring you the numbers we need to point out that these are exit poll results which are not based on an actual count of the votes because those will come in a little bit later in the evening that being said lets take a look the exit poll for shows of the social democrats here act waiting for that to show up there ok were 27. 5 percent the c. D. U. Chance of Michael Christian democrats a 15. 5 percent the left at 11 percent the far right a. F. D. Coming in 22. 5 percent putting it in such a 2nd place which is significant of the greens taking 10 percent also a significant number there a Regional Party the plan of a united Civic Movement free voters taking 5 percent of the. Business friendly f. D. P. Are at 4. 8 percent in other parties completing the picture at a 3. 7 percent according to these just released exit polls and again these are not final numbers we also have some exit poll data for you from saxony lets take a look at those no chance of michael c. D. U. Which currently governs in the state comes in 1st 32 percent of the left party is that 10. 5 percent the s. P. D. Is at 8 percent the far right a. F. D. Coming in at 27. 5 percent of the greens here add 9 percent to the business friendly the f. D. P. At 4. 8 percent the others account for 8. 2 percent of these exit poll results and just to say it again these are not based yet on actual vote counts these are exit poll results that were bringing you. All right lets go to the f. T. Election party in fun time a sparrow standing by thomas i heard some some cheering behind you tell us whats going on there. Indeed there is cheering right here in front of the Election Party although it seems according to those initial numbers that the they did not manage to become the Strongest Party politicians here have been very very eager to say that they still consider it to be a victory that they still consider to be a victory in particular because the party has grown into more in recent years in fact that is something that probably is being discussed right now youre behind me you can hear me hear the cheering of the the members hearing from them but it will be interesting to see how they will analyze this election now it is very probable they will not be able to form a government because all of the parties to me have a vow to have said time and time again that they will not form a coalition with the with the i think its now also up to the social democrats even if they do become the major party according to those initial numbers they will have the mistral task to form a government to run the boat thomas youve been reporting there and i want to mention again the social democrats in the 2nd exit polls coming in at 27. 5 percent which is significantly more than the polls that weve seen in the past weeks what do you think that means about how the traditional parties particularly with social democrats that suit me is that many people. One of the things that important to stress to me is that many people here in brandenburg tend to decide on their vote at the very last minute not something that was clear also from previous polls and even polls mention that up to 40 percent of made up their mind days before the election here in brandenburg and that makes plain why the social democrats got a better result than mentioned in some of the polls in the last few days so thats certainly one of the few arguments that we have to consider when we analyze why the social democrats managed to get that result and also why the d. Here in brandenburg managed to get the. That were seeing right now. Right thomas interesting stuff there will be coming back and. Thats what youre securing there from the a. F. P. In bunbury lets go now to saxon his capital city dress indeed he is kate brady is there for us kate we are still looking at through these results but what do you think of these exit polls that weve seen now from saxony the c. D. U. Coming out the Strongest Party. But you say at the moment these are only the 1st initial exit polls of course things could still change but this is looking positive at least for. Conservative c. D. U. They have been and how were here in saxony theyve been the strongest posse here since german reunification almost 30 years ago that would have been a huge blow to anglo mouthfuls party showed that is still possible of course should they lose that position as the Strongest Party here in saxony today but at the same time just looking at what the f. T. Are currently pulling out in these exit polls 27. 5 percent thats triple the number of votes of what they managed to get back in the 2014 state election here in saxony so massive increase for them of course that will be a huge success for them. At least among Party Members that will be he and i as a huge success even if they dont come out as a strong this party just think back this party the far right a. F. D. Started out as a your skeptic party back in 2013 have havent even been around for a decade yet and a now polling here in some states in eastern germany and around the 25 percent mark specifically here in saxony around 27. 5 percent so of course that is a huge increase but of course its also worth noting at the same time that i mean 3 courses of voters here in saxony didnt have step ballots for the far right a. F. D. But of course over the next couple of hours well see exactly as all of those votes are counted exactly how accurate these 1st exit polls are and what that really will mean for the Coalition Government back in berlin all recuperating dress im going to come back to you in just a few moments but for now lets take a look again at those exit poll results pointing out that these are not based on an actual count of the votes that will come a little bit later in the evening but still we should look at these results again the exit polls for bunning blog showing the social democrats who currently govern the state at 20. 7. 5 percent chancellor merkels christian democrats are at 15. 5 percent the left party at 11 percent the far right f. T. Coming in at 22. 5 percent that puts it in 2nd place as we heard there the greens taking 10 percent a Regional Party of the Planning Board united Civic Movement free voters takes 5 percent the business friendly f. D. P. Sure at 4. 8 percent the other partys completing the picture just 3. 7 percent and these are just released exit polls we also have the exit poll data from saxony for you again to repeat what we are seeing at chancellor merkel c. D. U. Which does currently govern the state coming in 1st at 32 percent the left party here at 10. 5 percent the s. P. D. At 8 percent at the far right a. F. P. Coming in at 27. 5 percent the greens taking 9 percent of the f. T. P. Also at 4. 8 percent in saxony the others accounting for 8. 2 percent of these exit poll results and again these are not based on actual vote counts we will get those of concrete results a little bit later. And lets go to Michelle Cruz now who is at the c. D. U. Party headquarters the christian democrats headquarters here in berlin again exit poll results michelle about how are they going down there. But here its going back well see do you part of that was a slight gasp of relief particularly when those saxony results came in seeing the conservative c. D. U. Or at least those exit polls seeing the conservative c. D. U. Party stay clear of the a. F. D. Significantly with a round about more than 4 percent at this very moment in time and then when those results for brand of came true that was actually a bit of a surprise because until those final hours we had been reporting that it was a neck and neck race now you know this could still change throughout the course of the evening but a clear signal here that the social democrats got away with a black eye. They steer clear of the far right if the posse by a couple of Percentage Points up to 5 percent at this very moment in time with those exit polls coming up on the charts so relief i dare say amongst both big tent parties on the american c. D. U. Party and to a Coalition Partner in the Central Government the social democrat s. P. D. And the very stability of the machall government right now its safe to say relies on the social democrat s. P. D. s stability and thats got a bit of a boost a very much needed boost so far this evening but its early days early days michel that we have been talking about these Regional Elections again over and over in the context of what it could mean for chancellor merkels governing coalition with these exit poll results are saying theres a sense of relief there does that mean that the stability of this government is then not in threat that things can continue as they have been between the c. D. U. In the social democrats. Absolutely i mean if these exit polls. Slated to actual results this would be a warning saw to us again it was a big tent posses that there is potential at the far right that there is real competition that the f. T. Is the new come up to take to be in the east at the same time it would allow the parties to breathe easy for a couple of weeks when those next Regional Elections take place but opossums he has been waiting with bated breath they had fears that the a. F. P. Could become the Strongest Party in those 2 regional states and although no one of the posse is willing at the moment to go into coalition with them this would have been more than a slap in the face this would have had this cool so waves have responded almost certainly for now it looks like that this knock on effect would really be false as more than a bit of a ripple. On how do you see this is this little more than a ripple then for the governing parties i mean we we cant fail to say that in the European Elections in both of these states the far right if they came out the Biggest Party does this mean that the traditional parties were able to mobilize their voters to prevent that from happening again yes i think it doesnt mean that if you look at the participation in this vote which was significantly higher than it was in the last Regional Elections i think that mobilization can be pushed onto the number of the extreme number of people that came in to actually vote and it looks as has the benefit of the traditional parties rather than the f. T. Rather than the right wing parties so as mckay i was saying they have somehow managed to consolidate at a fairly low level but consolidate their parties in these regions at a fairly low level but with a kind of strength that in fact at the moment before these polls nobody was expecting. All right i want to take a look at those numbers again for the viewers who are just joining us so we have exit poll results from these 2 key state elections theyre not actual vote count so well get those later on of course bring them to you as soon as they come to us but these exit poll results from one book show the social democrats currently governing the state the they come in at 27. 5 percent again we mentioned a few times that they were polling neck and neck with the far right so this is a significant result if its confirmed for them chancellor merkels christian democrats here at 15. 5 percent the left party at 11 percent and here the far right if we see coming in at the 2245 percent we should mention that they come in 2nd place have remained fairly steady as well at that number over the past years also since National Elections around 20 percent so they havent lost ground the greens taking 10 percent this Regional Party its called the united Civic Movement free voters taking 5 percent of business friendly f. T. P. s 4. 8 percent other parties that completing the picture 3. 7 percent and lets bring you the exit poll results from saxony again whats take a look at those numbers chancellor merkel c. D. U. Michelle us of their breathing perhaps a sigh of relief they currently govern in the state in the coming in at 32 percent the left party is that 10. 5 percent the s. P. D. At 8 percent the far right is coming in 2nd here but at 27. 5 percent the greens at 9 percent the f. D. P. Also here in saxony at 4. 8 percent so they havent reached this 5 percent needed to enter the legislature and the other parties accounting for 8. 2 percent of the exit poll results and we just want to make sure everyone understands these are not actual vote counts these are exit poll results so we should take that and of course know that we will have concrete results coming up a little bit later but one again looking at those numbers you know we should say that the city you might be breathing a sigh of relief because they have come out the Strongest Party if these exit poll results are confirmed in sacks. But the number is there for the a. F. P. Kicked to get 27. 5 percent of vote that is very significant yes indeed i think that has been a train for the f. T. Especially in eastern germany to get stronger and stronger and we had an indication of that earlier during the european parliamentary elections as you said so that trend is basically confirmed on the air he will continue to. I think correctly say that theres a significant victory for them in terms of the support that they have consolidated for themselves what all of us will be looking at now is where the support of the f. T. Came from other parties lost a christian democrats the conservatives lost presumably to the f t u a social democrats lost presumably to the f. T. Left party lost presumably to be a of dean so all of these parties may be reading a sigh of relief but they havent been really doing well in the last few years well i understand that the minister president and saxony. Who has been leading the campaign there of course in saxony is speaking to media lets listen to him now. You know this is the president is going to be the strongest posse who is going to be the speaker of the reach of parliament weve managed to get this a its a great day for ross. Thank you. Thank you this is the moms for the great support weve gone from all of us socks nice thankfully from our young people oh my youth policy organization theyve gone behind some of their eyes. And funds for the colleagues from the Parliamentary Party thanks for everybody together weve made it its a great day. You know now you know for me the biggest cost of the work is still ahead the point is now to form a. Government thats going to be good for this state we know what their responsibility is beginning to talk of the what level of courage are we looking forward to providing a stable government to this state to that end were going to hold discussions would have to Start Coalition negotiations it wont happen overnight but the most important thing has been done today we have managed to achieve a clear majority for what to do in the future to make sure this country is forward looking that we can strengthen social cohesion that we can have prosperity and the good positive forces in these countries reinforce and they disperse and then weve got 5 years time to talk to those we havent yet reached we are going to continue our policy to talk with each other not about each other to call a spade a spade and to move ahead on socks and almost style straight forward and. Forward looking not so our job and we do that together and im great youre with me thinking thank you for all of the role and the commander thank you thank you we go to hold on to their majority their very own was a tory move coming from the south i think we have managed to get this majority now we have to work with each other not talk about each other for he has in fact i think a significant factor in this doing so well in this victory for the good of the conservatives and saxony he took over leadership of the party halfway through the past. Hes young hes a fresh face in the party and he campaigned in very very intensely and talked to a lot of people here and comparing to the Grassroots Campaign he crisscrossed in the state talking to people i think you has been rewarded for that. Will be a significant boost for the courier for the christian democrats or ever will. Still do not know what the exact distribution of power between the parties is in saxony and its not clear whether or not mr crash will be able to continue the coalition with the social democrats that he has been running until now so they all this is significant in the Strongest Party they will be able to determine what kind of coalition they would like to enter into but its not clear what kind of coalition will be possible because we dont have the final results yet there might still be quite a lot of tech to Tactical Movement and discussions between the various parties before we actually know what the government is going to look like and you mentioned krishna crisscrossing the state our reporter kate brady has also been all over saxony ahead of this photo talking to people and following how the candidates have been doing this and and kate you know we mentioned that it seems like the centrist parties the c. D. U. In saxony managed to mobilize the partys voters ahead of this vote how did they manage to do so. They certainly did and it seems as well that theres a lot of the previous people people who previously didnt vote here in saxony who were motivated to head out to the polls today and as hans was saying that a lot of this success at least for the c. D. U. Or whether this projected success is also overdue being handed to you michelle you cut the current state premier here in saxony i mean hes been extremely active early in the past few months but also if the past couple of past few years hes been hearing saxony now as insecure 2014 elections but of course im looking. And as i just quick about to use earring. Ok thanks kate but you know listening to that you saying that you know the c. D. U. Rather has been able to get out and mobilize support there is the accusation that the c. D. U. The christian democrats in saxony have started to adopt some of the language of the far right in order to bring back some of those voters how fair is that accusation yes i think that is true to some extent michelle has been someone who has been emphasizing the conservative roots of the christian democrats of his party he has always that he is never going to cooperate with the of the with the far right so he has excluded that but at the same time it is true that he has positioned his party more on the right of the political spectrum whereas there are other forces in the conservative party that which go in the opposite direction in fact one has to say and brand of good exactly the opposite happened the local christian democratic leader from the beginning said that he was prepared and willing and wanted to have a coalition with the green party so he took exactly the opposite direction from the show it looks as though christmas line has been more successful what were just hearing from michele cuts from a in saxony if we come back to the head of the if indeed there and thats how that has been speaking and i think we have a clip of him speaking lets listen to that now. As this news ive been this is the big chunk of this is the. Very hot pieces are you. Together pieces you know. Chief this results but tom and i expected. You know its really going to. Be with us miked next to have. Attentional plus of being the strongest policy but for the 1st time in the reading these. Results because very clearly that we are a is coming and we came to stay its not paying to be any sort of the same old thing. As i think its important to know weve seen how important these elections are by also the images of the federal Party Leadership in each party showing up in the states and campaigning along on their on the stage we just saw beyond hooka who is a leader of the far far right faction in the a. F. D. On the stage hes from the state of turin shit but we heard unbiased its there say you know we are here to stay and regardless of the fact that they didnt come in according to exit poll results as the Strongest Party they have been able to maintain around 20 percent as we said for over the past few years absolutely that half in establishing themselves after that level at least in the east of the country its not quite the same in the west western parts of germany but in the eastern part of germany around 20 percent is where they have established their level of support in both these polls they have exceeded their 20 percent by some Percentage Points so i think that can be very satisfied but there was a chance there was and some of the polls in the in the past few weeks before the actual election some of the polls actually returned results where the if he were the strongest policy and obviously that sort of. Made a significant difference if that i had actually come to be in this case they. So to be successes and they are correct that this is a success on their part they will be consolidating at that level but they will push ahead they were trying to get more votes yes ok well we got the picture from saxony lets go now back to pan burger thomas pharaohs been following the evening for us from the f. T. Party invaded that is just outside of potsdam important blog thomas i dont see you at the moment but there you are ok if you can hear us we heard a little bit of a clip there from that speaking a little bit earlier tell us what some of the reactions are that youve seen there from these initial exit poll results that would indicate that the far right if he coming in at 2nd place with over 20 percent of the vote. Obviously some people here i would probably say most people here were expecting or at least were hoping the heat to become the Strongest Party in brandenburg on a fact some of the signs behind me already pointed to what they described as a historic moment that they were expecting that historic moment becoming the strongest particular. Does not seem to be the case for the h. D. But they are still presenting those initial numbers those initial figures as a victory for them in particular because of the increase in support that they have had not only now but over the last few years well we heard some of the politicians you already mentioning that they are here to stay that they want the d. To become a big force in peace and part of germany they have in fact be presenting themselves as the party of the east and topping into feelings that are specific to the east and that refer to dogs do you think that many people here have of being left behind in a way off of germanys reunification whether were talking about infrastructure whether were talking about education whether were talking about salaries there are many people here who have expressed the view that they feel left behind and that they feel the traditional parties the big tent bodies have not paid enough. Tension to the east and that is something that the if he has tried to topple into itll be very interesting to see what happens now with the other parties with the other parties that will have to try and form a coalition here in brandenburg because if there is one thing clear that most potties are the sole parties stated in advance is that they would vote for mccall ation with the a. F. P. So its now up to the other fox and in particular to the social democrats the s. P. D. To try and see how they can form a coalition the s. P. D. Has been here in power since 990 and im pretty sure that told them this is a very important result and also a relief to see that if those results prove to be true then they will still be the major force here in brandenburg all right thomas there and that it will come back to you in a few moments thank you thomas. And lets go back to our chief Political Editor michel because now his is out the city you had quarters here in berlin and he said i would keep talking about these 2 Regional Elections being very significant for various reasons but remind our viewers again why were looking so closely at these 2 votes and what the the initial exit poll results have told us. Yes well were working very closely because they have the potential to have a knock on effects on to this stability of angular mouthfuls Coalition Government after all shes currently in government thats of the c. D. U. Posse with the social democrat s. P. D. Party and it is just got a bit of a slap down once again at the polls in the state of brown a bug which surrounds but then but it came out most likely according to the polls we know the Strongest Party and beat the howard if the party into 2nd place at the same time in saxony the conservative c. D. U. State. Looks likely to be able to be on talk is that toughness a percentage point separates his c. D. U. From the far right. If the so you could tell everybody was living in fear of this shift to the right and whats that would mean for one of the top and who would be able to form a government and now the big question is. How will these regional governments before because that became a lot more complicated its smells of potential for minority governments thats a bit of a political experiment thats been tried and hasnt worked that terribly well so far here in germany so we dont expect a big tsunami on the stability of the merkels coalition but there certainly is a bit of a knock on effect because those big tent parties and the c. D. U. And the s. P. D. They are both in decline thats something weve yet to get at these polls. All right thank you and again now we are looking at these initial exit poll results the social democrats in bundaberg coming in at 27. 5 percent and the c. D. U. In saxony coming in at 32 percent we will continue to follow this story and bring all of the latest details on those concrete vote results as they come in to us for now though a car on the aspen will deliver some of your world news. Minds have big problems. While buyer not jumping for joy. With kids she knew facing him personally. All right back now to sue me with our continuing coverage of todays key Regional Elections in germany. Thank you karl as we said as we said were following those are all important Regional Elections and to east german states showing strong support for the far right raising the pressure on conservatives fundamental but in both states the traditional parties did manage to maintain slim margins over the far right alternative for germany d. A. S. D. In the state of fun but exit polls show the social democrats were 1st in saxony those polls show that both outfront. And we want to bring in those exit poll results now these are not based on an actual count of votes we will have those for you a little bit later in the evening but in the funding but the exit poll shows the social democrats who currently govern the state at 27. 5 percent now ahead of this vote they were neck and neck with the a. F. P. So this is considered for them a good result if it is confirmed chancellor merkels christian democrats coming in at 15. 5 percent the left party at 11 percent of the far right a. F. D. Coming in also strong in 2nd place at 22. 5 percent the greens here according to this poll taking 10 percent this Regional Party book united Civic Movement free voters taking 5 percent of the business friendly f d p at 4. 8 percent that means they do not reach the 5 percent needed for them to actually enter into the legislature other parties completing the picture at 3. 7 percent according to these exit polls that have been released we do also have exit poll data from saxony the other state in these key Regional Elections chancellor merkel c. D. U. Which does currently govern this state coming in at 32 percent at 1st place the left party at 10. 5 percent d. The social democrats at 8 percent the far right after coming in at 27. 5 percent in 2nd place there the greens taking 9 percent and here the f. T. P. Also at 4. 8 percent others accounting for 8. 2 percent of these exit poll results again not they sed on actual vote counts yet. And were going to listen now to a live feed of Shafer Gumbel from the social democrats talking about these Regional Election results lets listen in. But of course there were limits colleague the worst possible conditions in that state the elections in eastern germany indicates that the level of resolution in the population definition reflected in the Election Results many people in both vanderburgh and saxony very clearly voted i favor of the Democratic Party has to send out a strong signal against the florida area time but equally there was a lot of people voting for good on the far right party in order to protest the f. T. Managed to get the protest vote escalated and it has to be. That the whole of former east germany to really look into why it is that so many people despite the positive Economic Conditions and great improve on still choose to protests its this way they still want to approach the people who voted. But its very clear for us if we exclude any corporation with them because many of the officials of the navy have shown their true and uses theyre often right wing extremists so there cannot be any corporation with our party all the same we all have to be aware that the votes reached by the air act show that we need to focus more on east germany which represent them and ultimately lets say somebody you go up in their home and grow up in a very hot day that dont manage to very clearly defend the state against the i have to find that part and that site is elections were held at a time when our federal social democrats had a difficult time of it all the more. That in recent weeks as a party even present a united front and also that we had very clear. Like the solidarity. Its a bush risk on film thats how we have to continue now the coming weeks and months and i would also like to join. 2 colleagues have already said many many thanks for those who come to plea when times are hard its even harder to run such a campaign at least so i want it all and for the beauty to stand together under foot name brand accession across this humanity from we all stood together we will for the for the ideals the. Democratic party and i think that way weve summed up the result quite well thank you. Ok those were the 3 cochairs at the moment we should say there provisionally right now temporarily the 3 cochairs might know what ash basic model to toss in chief. Provisional temporary because hans as we know this is a party that doesnt actually have a current concrete Leadership Structure after suffering several poor Election Results most recently in European Elections there was a push for change and the party hadnt planned on this was essentially pushed out of that position and nobody seems to want the job that she had so there are 3 provisional leaders at the moment but what did you make from what we heard there from the 3 of cochairs well i think in the end what what you get is a sense of relief of the fact that to prime the book at the remains of the social democrats remain the Strongest Party in brandenburg i think is a great relief to the social democrats because the threat was there there were many polls that showed the social democrats and the far right if the neck and neck in Brandon Burke and only in the last minute does. That seem to have swung in the direction in favor of the social democrats so theyre very relieved about that i think they will take some kind of positive feeling for the whole party out of the sense that they are maybe reaching the bottom of their. Of their bad. Times as it were and that they can start looking up a little bit more i think it will give them a little bit more momentum for choosing these new meters which is a long complicated process thats going to take another couple of months in fact that is certainly the hope for the social democrats lets go back to michelle if you for our chief Political Editor who is at the c. D. U. Party headquarters for us michelle were coming to you now because i believe just a short while ago the secretary general of the christian democrats or a policy act was speaking bring us up to date on what he has been saying. Yes what he said basically that the policy was listening and the stress not dissimilar to the social democrat s. P. D. Statement we heard a short time ago on this program and that this was a very tough race indeed you could just tell that there is a real sense of relief here that the kids have to see to you hardly matters to remain the strongest Political Force in saxony and although we didnt really talk about it this certainly also is with the fear that the social democrats have managed to put a bit of distance between themselves and the 2nd place a. S. D. In the state to run the bugs so its quite clear here that poet senior at the Party Secretary general basically was thanking everybody who was involved who paid a lot of credit to the 2 top candidates particularly in the success right in saxony who never became tired and i saw that personally of pressing the flesh particularly with a gifty vote is. Very much belief that the established parties thats a rhetoric that the far right if he uses. The real people so clearly a slight victory in that sense from the perspective of the conservative c. D. U. But no doubt the c. D. U. Is in decline its lost several Percentage Points both in a sexy but also in front of all right so its a sigh of relief there a bit a bit of a respite for the guy. Winning coalition they had feared perhaps worse results michel i think you will come back to a little bit we have until now been talking about exit poll results lets get the numbers again these are projected results now based on a partial count of the vote lets take a look here so the results at this stage for fun board shows the social democrats who currently govern the state at 27. 2 percent chance of Michael Christian democrats at 15. 3 percent the left party at 11 percent and the far right a. F. D. Comes in at 22. 7 percent the 2nd Strongest Party in the state the greens taking on 10. 2 percent the Regional Party the london book united Civic Movement free voters taking 5 percent the business friendly f. D. P. At 4. 8 percent and other parties completing the picture there are 3. 8 percent we also have now projected results from the state of saxony lets take a look chancellor michael c. To you does currently govern the state house govern the state since the fall of the wall coming in here at 32 percent of the left party at 10. 6 percent the s. P. D. At 7. 9 percent you can see the loss is also what the change in vote is from 5 years ago in the last 8 elections also interesting to look at the foreign aid coming in at a 27. 3 percent that makes them 2nd the greens at 8. 8 percent of the f. D. P. At 4. 7 percent and the others here accounting for 8 per se point 7 percent of the projected results so were getting a little bit of a clearer picture of these vote results so we initially had exit polls now we have a partial vote count we have been talking about what this means for the drift Traditional Party something we havent touched upon yet is weve also been following in the lead up to these votes is a key Regional Elections how the green party will do you know if the centrist parties are falling apart the entire political spectrum is being shaken its not just the a. F. C. Thats benefited but also the greens in the left side of the spectrum how have you seen how do you see the results from both of these states so far welcome both. Stace the greens have done a lot better than they have ever done. In especially in brandenburg they have achieved a result that i think was almost beyond their dreams and in saxony its not quite as spectacular but their 2 that have significantly increased their support that is partly a result of the fact that Environmental IssuesClimate Change and so on has become so important in recent months has come so far to the front of the political discussion not only here in germany but worldwide so the greens have clearly benefited from that its also significant because in the eastern part of germany the Greens Green Party so far has not been particularly strong its not a traditional area way that party has gained much support so i think their Movement Towards becoming one of the strongest parties and while the stuff across the country that is something thats happening in the east of germany as well probably because theres a lot of young voters there as well especially in saxony but also in brandenburg so its the young that will go to the greens i imagine that makes them very very attractive partners for any code that might come out in both these times of the states and it is its interesting to note that we should we will also be looking at the regional patterns are so the cities have been voting more towards the greens and in more of the rural areas weve seen more support for the far right a. S. D. Something we havent touched upon hands the significance of this these 2 votes for the federal government but also in really showing the east west divide in germany its been 30 years since the fall of the berlin wall and get this divide is ever more present at the moment especially when it comes to the way people are voting tell us more about that is what does have the feeling as. After 30 years after more than a generation since the wall came down is the germany unified these kind of differences actually becoming in some sense more acute at the moment. And they have been saying maybe 10 years ago even 5 years ago i think part of that has to do really with the different history of these 2 parts of the country there is simply a different. The population in the east is structured completely differently to the population in the west and a lot of people have left the east in the last 30 years the population in the east is significantly older than the population in the west especially in rule areas that you were talking about now the whole structure of the population in the east has changed significantly in last 30 years and i think thats part of the reason why were seeing this they are all sorts of other reasons that people talk about the tradition of. You know having a. Totalitarian state in the east in other words having a government that tells people what to do rather than people having an antidote or democratic kind of government and that is one of the reasons what people feel that there is such support for right wing party that is really. Tending towards and also the author terry and form of government which in the east you had under the nazis and then on the communist under communist rule until the wall came down. Thats also part of it then theres the whole question of how well developed probably industrialized these regions of the east is basically a rule region they have very few areas especially in saxony that have always been industrialized so the rest of the east has been basically. Structured along rule lines and theyre true that you would have a stronger conservative a stronger. Feeling a stronger feeling for a 3rd tarion leaders and that sort of things. I think those issues play a row you also have to say that. What plays a role there is what plays a role in the whole of europe a populist parties are rising making significant gains all over europe with bricks of in the United Kingdom at the moment the. Long lost in the in the in france the successes of salvini in italy you could also see the successes of donald trump in the United States won over the world in western countries there is this tendency for people to feel left out of a globalized globalized economy left behind by globalized trends theyre feeding a strange to within their own country because of globalization and i think thats a significant also in germany and especially in the east where this feeling of being left behind left being left out of the mainstream. Is not only a result of globalization but also a result of the particular history of east germany where people there felt when unification came east germany kind of disappeared in the. In the feelings or in the perception of the whole country and they were sort of ignored thats very important analysis lets get that in perspective on that as well lets pick that up with Thomas Sparrow who is in blood and blood sorry it looks like we do not have thomas at the moment but odds are just saying you know there are of course trends that were seeing in the east in particular and that is something that the f. D. A. Has also picked up on to say we are the party of the east they really used a lot of the language for example from 1919 the peaceful revolution where tens of thousands of germans went out into the streets that chanting for freedom and democracy using that again to say vote for the a. F. P. Well we will bring you that change again you see a city that has been there live and they have been saying that the government that we have at the moment the coalition the grand coalition between the social democrats and the conservatives is in fact on the authoritarian government and government that suppresses the opinions of large numbers of people. So they have been using in fact these slogans these anti communist slogans and to talk to totalitarian slogans that in fact contributed to the fall of east germany of communism is germany and have been turning them into slogans that are not being used by a far right wing party its very ironic but it seems to have been quite successful their main slogan in the in this Election Campaign has let us complete the transformation the transformation from communist east germany to something new and trying to pick up on that also ironic is that many of the most significant leaders in the in the east actually off from the way the western. You know its populist politics it has very little to do with reality but its been successful all right lets talk a little bit more about that with kate brady who has been covering these elections for us in saxony she is in dress and hi kate weve just been talking here about some of the messaging the antiestablishment themes that weve heard also this deepening east west divide that appears to really be coming to the forefront again 30 years after the fall of the wall how much has that played a role in your experience there in reporting in saxony. It certainly has played a huge role and ive traveled around over the last couple of weeks or so in several different places here in saxony and its interesting to see the difference you mentioned that we currently see in this difference on a National Scale between east and west in germanys policies but here in the former in the states that were in the form of east germany youve seen a real difference at the moment between some major cities and also between the more rural areas and you find that the further east you guard for example towards the czech for the awards the polish border the bigger the support seems to be at least for the f. T. If you look back to some of the more recent polls as well some of the more recent elections are like the European Elections there are parts of rural parts of saxony whether they have the was getting numbers close to 50 percent compare that to booming cities like life sic not far from here im dressed in at the moment and its actually the green party thats doing extremely well there and they have read that thats a city thats thrived reading in the years to the fall of the wall in 1909 and really has enjoyed the benefits of Many International companies coming in and pumping money into society into the economy that in life are going to really benefited from globalization at the same time out in those rural areas thats where some of the Biggest Industries were in the form ace germany and many of those closed down and many people were left without jobs and have found it hard to recover in the 3 decades since of all of the walls since 990. 00 when the 2 germanys reunited to get themselves back on their feet and these are some of the issues which the far right a. F. D. As you were talking about with hans these are some of the issues that the a. F. P. Has pride on and played on peoples emotions is of course is a very emotional subject for the wall and the aftermath of that sometimes we talk about last generations lost biographies he. In germany particularly in eastern germany people whose careers were brought to an end with the fall of the wall and were unable to begin a new life as successfully as others and there is still the view that even now 30 years after the fall of the wall and just coming up the anniversary for that in november theres this feeling of a loss of identity and his hands were saying this goes hand in hundreds well with the idea of globalization and also some of the negative sides of globalize ation as you mentioned a lot of the industry suffered here in the form of a stand that drove many people here in saxony to the polls at the same time 25 percent its looking like at the moment the a. F. D. Looks likely to get 25 percent of the vote here in saxony and although those figures are very very significant huge losses of course for both the big tent policies here in germany the conservative c. D. U. And the social democrats there is still 75 percent of the state who didnt vote for the far right but of course these results should not be underestimated if the f. T. Does indeed walk away with about 25 percent of the vote here in saxony that will still be taken as a huge success for the far right its also remember not so long ago there were concerns here in germany when the a. F. D. Was about to enter a state parliament for the 1st time for the 1st time that they were maybe going to jump over that 5 percent threshold that we have here in germany for a party 2 and even a state regional polman and those rules apply National Level too and now were talking about the far right winning a quarter of votes here in saxony so still a lot of food for thought for angle americas Government Back in berlin and as we heard from. The saxony state premier. Earlier this evening and hes talking now. About how parties need to stick together and talk with each other so it will be interesting to see whether this mentality resonates with the National Government as well because goodness knows theyve had their time of troubles in recent months particularly since they formed the current governing coalition in berlin back in early 2018 and some cohesion could indeed be exactly what they need for them to see through the current to the planned 2021 National Elections all right a lot of food for thought indeed cator it will come back to you in a little bit there in dresden in the days leading up to these Regional Elections the head of the far right in bonn book on glasgow thats came under scrutiny for his affiliation with extremist rallies in the past a Police Report say ive won a vent in greece in 2007 the group he was with on for old a swastika flag but did the revelations hurt his partys Election Campaign take a look. He is one of the forces pushing the german right wing a 50 party further to the extreme right under its Regional Party leader in the east german state of brandenburg he openly rants against migrants to further his politics its been a School Holiday for a shift to the right means that we are safe again so that my 17 year old daughter can freely use public transport again and does not have to wait outside the train station in the rain to avoid the syrian and Afghan Desert as loitering inside if that is what a shift to the right means then yes this country needs it and the stands for it. Only days before the brandenburg state election the f. T. Top candidate has come under scrutiny new reports have surfaced linking colberts to far right extremist groups including neo nazis his ties to far it extremism has been in the news before but he has downplayed the claims its true that my biography is often reduced to just these factors ok one could allege that i have ties to the far right but i surely do not have a far right biography so far his push to shift the a further to the right doesnt seem to have hurt him or the party in brandenburg which is considered one of its leading strongholds. Is interesting to watch those revelations about how thats just days ahead of the vote you have to say on the one hand were talking about this partys meteoric rise so just started or just was ground it founded rather in 2013 and has already gained what it looks like at the moment 25 percent of the vote and saxony on the other hand of this party is facing its own kind of internal struggle as i mean where does this party stand right now in terms of its ability to really reach a lot of voters its impossible to say exactly where it stands at the moment in terms of its policies and this tension between a very rightwing. As they call themselves they hold themselves simply the wing and god this really is they have. Them and organize all down off their main proponent. Between the right wing wing on the one hand who is trying to pull that party really into a right wing radical spectrum and the more populist conservative right wing conservative as one might call them on the current leadership such as. There is a lot of infighting going on there some regional parts of the party are unable to function at the moment because of this tension between those 2 different tendencies within the party i think after these results and brunton book will feel strengthened and we are still waiting for an addiction later in october in the east german state of touring where the main candidate of the of the in fact is the public face of this right wing tendency beyond the hooka if he does well that also will strengthen the right wing in the f. T. So although the f. T. Is talking about a phenomenal success at the moment and one has to admit that in comparison to results 5 years ago that have really come made a lot of progress theres no certainty that this party will in fact continue at a similar sort of pace because of these internal tensions we dont know exactly whats going to happen there it will indeed put that in context for us in terms of how the if hes performing on a National Level because in the rest of the country you are not looking at the former east and those states they seem to have stagnated in the in a certain way yes indeed certainly on the National Level the party has not really fulfilled its promise the promise that it had for itself as it were stagnated somewhere well below 20 percent in regions around maybe 12 to 15 percent. There i think is one signal that there is some kind of top level ceiling to support for such potties. In germany in fact. Scientists political Scientists Say that in many western European Countries there is that sort of ceiling somewhere in that lever on 25 to 30 percent we dont know how its going to play out in germany its a very new phenomenon in germany as you have been saying about the f. T. Certainly is a party to continue watching and a Certain Party that can still have explosive consequences for the whole political dance there have been in germany now right for our viewers just joining us so this is our special election coverage all important Regional Elections here in germany elections in 2 east german states showing strong support for the far right raising the pressure on conservative chance running americal a bus in both states germanys traditional parties did maintain according to the partial vote comes a slim margins over the far right alternative for germany in the state of one board exit polls showing the social democrats coming in 1st in saxony those polls showing chancellor merkel c. D. U. Out front and lets take a closer look at those numbers the latest projected results a based on a partial count of the vote 1st lets look at the state of london book these partial results show the social democrats are currently govern the state a 27. 2 percent chancellor merkels christian democrats at 15. 4 percent the left party attempt an 8 percent then there we see it the far right and coming in at 22. 8 percent the greens taking 10. 4 percent the Regional Party the london board united Civic Movement free voters taking 5 percent of the business friendly f. T. P. At 4. 8 percent and other parties completing the picture at 3. 6 percent for it we also have the latest project results for the state of saxony of course there are chancellor merkel c. D. U. Which does currently govern the state coming in at 32. 3 percent the left party at 10. 3 percent the s. P. D. The social democrats at 7. 6 percent and the far right a. F. D. In a 2nd place at 27. 8 percent of the greens taking 8. 6 percent the f. D. P. At 4. 8 percent and the other is accounting for 8. 6 percent of these projected results. And lets go right to Thomas Sparrow who is in punjab or grays been following these Regional Elections for us hi thomas bring us up to date again of whats been happening there you were with the a. F. P. It and Election Party in the town of santa and remind us how these the results have been going on going down there. The a. F. P. So he was expecting historic result in fact one of the signs behind me the early states that if those results that you have presented in the end then it wouldnt be as historic as they would like it to be the a. N. C. Would not become the strongest pati here in the a. N. C. Would not manage to be there to become the Strongest Party for the 1st time in a Regional Elections in a german state so if you analyze it will stop especially with just such a need not as good as the a. N. C. Had expected however politicians here in nevada at the election raji have been presenting this nevertheless as a positive result for them seen in the long run scene in the long. Way in which they have been able to gain voters for example in the last few years and in fact he has been able to gain votes in the last few yes the last 2 or 3 years theyve been able to increase their popularity in the state of their voting hasa do with the refugee crisis but it mostly has to do with a sudden dissatisfaction that people here in these states have such a dissatisfaction that has to do with the fact that many believe that they are 2nd class citizens that they have been left behind by traditional bodies on many protests as a result of a tug to the party that has presented itself as a party from the east on us hans and just say it is the party that wants to in a way complete reunification by the way a slogan that has been very controversial not only here but in as well but that is the feeling here in baghdad the if the paci election pati it will be interesting going to see what happens next how the different parties move here in branded bush trying to form a coalition the one thing that seems clear no. Well want to Work Together with the alternative. Thomas and welcome back to you in a little bit on something we havent talked much about yet is voter turnout that is something that was also being closely watched what that could indicate for results what weve been seeing on that front a certain insects in the figures have been very clear the voter turnout has been a lot better than it was in previous elections and it looks as though that has been to the benefit of the christian democrats overcome some of those and not for the benefit of the a of d. Of the far right party as one might also have speculated so it looks as though the traditional parties the lets say the n. T. Right wing parties have managed to motivate their voters that its very important especially in this poll to go to the polls to cos they have to somehow put a stop to the advances of the. Obviously the f. T. C. Has made significant gains in comparison to its previous showings previous elections but the consolidation of the conservatives in saxony and the social democrats in brandenburg as the Strongest Party in their regions i think has a lot to do with the fact that they have managed to mobilize voters possibly also 1st time voters. To actually go to the polls all right well well continue to monitor those partial vote counts that weve seen so far hands and continue to update our viewers on that for now though lets take a look at the world news with congressman. Thank you so me will dozens of leaders from across the world a joint ceremonies in poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the start of world war 2 polish president and jay do just said there are still lessons to be learned from the war and his german counterpart frank. Minds have big problems. While jumping for joy. Was keen you know facing him personally. Are less aback now theres so many so much going on with our continuing coverage of todays key Regional Elections in germany. Thats right karl thank you for viewers just joining us this is the news that were following these 2 key Regional Elections exit polls showing the forward alternative for germany and making big gains in 2 state elections in eastern germany but they also show mainstream parties likely to finish 1st in both states voters in saxony which borders poland and the Czech Republic put chancellor Angela Merkels christian democrats or her party in 1st place with the f. D. A. And 2nd and voters in brandon book which is the state that surrounds berlin that puts the social democrats in 1st and the a f d just behind. And lets look at those numbers now we have projected results that are based on a partial count of the vote the results of the stage 4 london book shows the social democrats who are currently governing the state at the 27 percent that keep them in the lead despite losing voters chancellor merkels christian democrats in one bucket 15. 7 percent you can see that the heavy loss down more than 7 percent of the left party is that 10. 6 percent also significant loss the far right a. S. D. This was being watched very closely coming in at 2nd at 23 point one percent up more than or nearly 11 percent putting him in 2nd place the greens are getting a 10. 5 percent picking up a lot of votes there more than 4 percent and the Regional Party the unborn united Civic Movement free voters taking 5 percent not such a good result for the business friendly f. D. P. Coming in according to these numbers that 4. 7 percent the other parties now completing the picture are at 3. 4 percent and we also have the latest projected results from the other state from saxony there chancellor merkels c. D. U. Currently governing to say coming in at 32. 3 percent the left party there at 10. 3 percent the s. P. D. The social democrats at 7. 6 percent losing nearly 5 percent compared to 5 years ago the most recent siddle actions of the far right a. F. D. Coming in at 27. 8 percent placing them in 2nd look at the jump 18 percent the greens taking 8. 6 percent the f. D. P. The business Friendly Party at 4. 8 percent the others they are accounting for 8 point to 6 percent of these projected results. All right lets talk again about some of those results and their projected vote counts we are waiting for concrete results going into these votes we were talking about a number of kind of overarching themes what will this mean for chancellor merkels government to berlin how will the far right do that with the green party do which hasnt traditionally been a strong party in this region in the former east what are at this point your biggest takeaways from this from these results that weve seen i think the biggest takeaway is that for. Government for the grand coalition between the conservatives on the social democrats these results will be some sort of relief some sort of reassurance that they are not continuing to lose to kind of bleed votes as they have been in recent polls both the christian democrats the conservatives and saxony and the social Democrats Holding on to their strongest position in brandenburg for both parties that will be a big relief and it will be i think in the end a stabilizing factor for this grand coalition it makes to makes about troll much more likely that this coalition will continue to exist as it were and for im going to knock holes last term in office to continue possibly until its projected and at the end of this period of government that was her wish wasnt to stay on till the end of 2021 and it looks at this point that the governing coalition can breathe a sigh of relief lets go to our correspondent our chief Political Editor michelle your crew from has been following all of this from the city you Party Headquarters michele but what is for you the bigger narrative here is that you know the gains that the far right has made more than 27 percent according to the partial vote counts of the parties gotten in saxony for example or is it that the centrist parties have managed to hold on to their share of the vote or to end up the Biggest Party in these 2 states. Where you can tell that were in the usual political times if both those Big Tent Party this is the democrats and americans deserve to see you are essentially solo gracing the. Despite the fact that theyve lost Percentage Points and the simple reason is because there was really a lot of concern that if the f. D. A. It came out top despite nobody wanting to go into coalition with them that this could have ripple effects into but then i think all those policy leaders i was going to say both possibilities but the social democrats currently have 3 interim leaders and this struggling to find a new policy does not very popular job right now but so Young America can breathe easy tonight as hans already said that that was the verses but this certainly was yet again a double to overstretch this image of warning shots for the big 10 passes that these are changing times that they have to offer Something Different and listen more closely as the Party Secretary paulson meccan self said on stage behind me here if they want to stabilize their results let alone gain Percentage Points in elections still to come michelle im curious to get your take in following these elections of the past few months in the reporting that youve been doing after the European Elections there was a very clear a sense among the 2 largest parties the social democrats and the christian as in christian democrats to Christian Democratic Union the c. D. U. That they needed to mobilize voters and they appear to have done so how did they manage to do so from your perspective. Yes its interesting the social democrats need to mobilize voters but a lot of nonvoter mobilization actually helps the far right if deep party with the big tent parties the social democrats and on the back will see to you party and small keeping those on the boards and not driving them to become protest verges and i also want to mention here a trend that weve been seeing weve been seeing significant losses at the left wing kind of spectrum of the left quasi here has suffered quite a sense to load in both station actions tonight and the. Greens who are increasingly seen as the new center in german politics have gained significantly although not in sky high as some opinion polls have predicted so yes there is a search for the right wish to keep benefits from nonvoters being mobilized but theres also been a significantly higher turnout that is helped preserve the dominance of the now of the big 10 posses in those 2 states but forming a government has just become a lot more complicated in both states these are the changing times where we could see some very awkward coalitions michelle and those 2 states thank you michelle well come back to you as more reactions come in from the christian democrats for now though lets go over to Thomas Sparrow who has been following all of this stuff unfundable it from an Election Party with the a. F. D. And thomas you know you have been with the far right tonight but we have been talking with michelle and with tons and also kate in saxony about how these the central parties have been able to mobilize voters and ahead of this vote it really looked like the social democrats might lose their standing as the governing party there in plan but to the far right i mean how do you think the the social democrats were able to get people to the polls to cast their ballots for the 1st time d. H. Sylvie. I must say couldnt understand your question very well but however i can inform you from here from the exam that god on one of the leaders of the party has just spoken he clearly stressed that to be a of these fights wasnt ended that it has begun that comes to show that for the a. F. P. Even though they didnt manage to become the strongest body here in brandenburg as they may well maybe would have wished they are still presenting this in a way as a victory that has to do with the number of votes that they received with the number of votes they have gained in recent years and also with the results that some of the competitors. People were cheering here quite a lot when they saw the results that the c. D. U. For example had the conservative side of the greens hot here in britain that they oversee believe here that the position is extremely strong in this spot even though they didnt manage according to those initial results that you presented to become the strongest the party for now the strongest body remains the s b d the social democrats that have governed here in brandenburg since 1990 they will probably have to try and find new coalitions me tired already pointed to the fact that Coalition Building in germany will become much more difficult as a result of these elections here in brandenburg but also in stocks any interesting ok thank you thomas for those reactions from that. Election party in battle that isnt just outside berlin lets go now to the saxony where our correspondent kate brady has been a following the vote from there lets see if we can see you now kate a bring us up to date on some of the reactions youve been seeing there and what do you think these a partial vote count that we have a mean for the state of saxony. Well of course looking more widely at some of the results its interesting to see as well though of course the green party has made some gains here in saxony as well but not as big as they might have been hoping for and definitely not as successful as in some of the states in western germany where theyve been enjoying results at around 20 percent and here in saxony is less than 10 percent and its interesting that Robert Habeck hes the current leader of Germanys Green Party he said that that could possibly be attributed to some tactical voting among voters now whether thats just Wishful Thinking by the green party or whether thats really facts well have to see but it is interesting to see how people as you were discussing that with where asking thomas about how voters have been mobilized to go to the polls here so weve definitely seen people and theres certainly been a certain sense of tactical voting here many voices just wanted to make sure that the fluorite a. F. D. Doesnt become too powerful but it is interesting as well so bearing in mind that weve been talking a lot about a surge from the far right a. F. P. But of course this is being something that has been happening over several years now if you look back even just a couple of years ago to germanys federal elections in september 27 tane the f. T. Did very well here also polling at around 27 percent which is exactly the result that theyve got today just back in may they also wont wear that 25 percent in the a year election so its much much less of a surge or more of an election of confirmations today and of course that still is a harsh reality and a bitter pill for Angela Merkels grand coalition to swallow and of course this is still yet another blow to that coalition so be interesting to see now exactly how at National Level they say not so graeme. Looking coalition. Plans to continue moving forward but at least for now it does seem that theyre a little safer than they were fearing that said the social democrats here in saxony have suffered huge losses theyre looking at a result of perhaps around 7. 9 percent which of course is definitely not going to be particularly helpful when it comes to Coalition Building here in saxony and thats when the real drama might indeed kick off here in the in the eastern state of saxony when it looks most likely that it will be the conservative c. D. U. Is the strongest part party looking around for some Coalition Partners they have already like the other parties here ruled out a coalition with the far right so we could even see a 3 Party Coalition here in saxony but well have to wait for the coming weeks to see exactly how those talks develop. The current conservative state premier here in saxony he talked earlier about parties talking together and working together rather than about each other so he will certainly be hoping to create a coalition that is stable here and the main thing for now at least for the other parties will be reminding the a. F. D. That at least if they come out as the 2nd Strongest Party they have missed their chance to be indeed the Strongest Party here in saxony and form that coalition a confirmation as you said kate that perhaps were looking at the new normal in german politics will come back to their address and in a little bit. And if youre just joining us a reminder of our top story here were covering these special elections key Regional Elections in germany the far right alternative for germany if he has made strong gains in 2 state elections in eastern germany exit polls showing the far right alternative for Germany Party making gains in these 2 states they also show mainstream parties as weve heard a likely to finish 1st in both states of voters in saxony which borders poland and the Czech Republic put chancellor Angela Merkels christian democrats in 1st place with the 82nd and voters in neighboring clattenburg which surrounds berlin with the social democrats and 1st and the a f t just behind germanys mainstream centrist parties took heavy losses but they did maintain their top positions in these elections for in fact and lets take a look now at some of the numbers that we have been looking at these are the latest projected results based on a partial count of the vote the results at this stage for bundaberg shows of the social democrats who currently govern a 26. 5 percent so maintaining that top position losing votes however down more than a 5 percent from the previous day lections chancellor merkels christian democrats that 15. 5 percent that is a significant loss from that for them as well more than 7 percent the left party here at 10. 4 percent the far right a. F. D. Coming in the hero as these projections are these partial vote counts at 23. 8 percent putting them in 2nd place creeping up a bit from the previous exit polls and the partial vote counts that we saw on the greens here coming in at 10. 2 percent to up around 4 percent a Regional Party of this is the pundit blog united Civic Movement free voters taking 5 point one percent the business friendly f. D. P. A 4. 5 percent other parties completing that picture at 4 percent and we also have the latest project the results for you from saxony lets take a look at those as well chance of michael c. D. U. Currently governing the state coming in here. Are saying at the latest numbers 32. 3 percent that is a loss but that still leaves them in 1st place of the left party is at 10. 3 percent the s. P. D. At 7. 6 percent the far right f. T. Coming in and these numbers here a 27. 8 percent that 2nd place of the greens taking 8. 6 percent just under a 3 percent gain boosts their business from the f. T. P. At 4. 8 percent the others accounting for 8. 6 percent of these projected results. All right hans lets talk a little bit about those numbers it does seem like of the a. F. D. In brandenburg are creeping up a little bit as we get more concrete numbers if i think possibly the reason for that is that we are getting concrete numbers from various polling stations and brought in because a very large states. The most outlying polling stations will come in late i presume and those are a regions that rule that where they have to get stronger so i think as the results from all the lying areas come in and the results from the cities becomes a small less important as it were in in the calculation is moving up slightly in the social democrats are moving down slightly it has not. Does not look as though its going to change significantly the order in which these Political Parties are going to finish at that as the end of the day but it does look as though. The that the gap between the social democrats and the a of the in brown to move state is narrowing all right well one of the stories we were looking at ahead of these votes is how the green party would do they are off according to the partial vote count in both states and the coal party leader of about how that was speaking after the polls close lets listen to what he had to say by the these Election Results are the best weve ever had in both states theyre about as good as the european Election Results are just completely different conditions id like to remind you that in the European Elections at a regional level we said it was making a statement that was the perfect Election Results for brandenburg and saxony and now were back again under completely different and much more difficult conditions and. Talk about some of those conditions that are up at how because referring to there in the west of the country theyre doing quite well here in the east not as easy as it is of course the greens probably seen by people in the east as a. Political party from the west which effectively is true its not a party that has had. In eastern germany after all and has been able in the slow you to build up those roots the factors that play a role they are part of the young voters coming into the calculation here voting for the 1st time and amongst young people i think the positions taken by the green party on especially Climate Change on the Environmental Issues are very popular but also plays a role is that the cities are becoming more important in both the states and saxony we had earlier that in cities such as leipsic trace and several other Cities University towns in the. States theres a Significant Group of young voters who will also be supporting the green party here in branson book which i say here which surrounds berlin and in fact there are a lot of people from the urban areas of berlin that live in brandenburg in the kind of surrounding areas of berlin and they really are people that live and vote in brandenburg and i think vetch sect of voters has also grown the number of people that have moved out of food and into the kind of more green a pashas around berlin brandenburg the number of people has grown and so their influence on the Election Results and by the book has also grown i think that is what the green party is profiting from this kind of progressive young voter ship and i think that is also what is making them into one of the really significant parties in june politics much more significant than it was maybe 5 years ago as the major parties such as the social democrats and the conservatives are losing so the greens are gaining votes they are. Coming closer to each other in voter support theres more of a balance between these 3 sectors of the vote and that makes its. A lot more difficult to find coalitions but it also forces all of these parties in fact to talk to each other robert. Coleader of the green party that weve just been talking to have just been hearing hes somebody who places a lot of emphasis on being open for coalitions to all sides ok well thats the picture for the greens lets talk about the social democrats now because the minister president that has been running the government now for the void hes the lead candidate for the social democrats hes also been speaking lets listen to what he said. Don i want to thank you all above all weve managed to show again that theres a party in this country that people trust and its still the brandenberg s p d thats the message of this evening. I know my grandsons out so many thanks to all of you once again and we went into this Election Campaign united we went into this campaign with a lot of substance and above all we got better and better at mobilization and dedication during this campaign so many people have supported us shelters here with me thank you again for your support. Im happy leave it cheap devalue good result because what worries me is the a result it means that we continue to face great challenges in this country to reach out to people and Work Together with them. Thats my goal for the coming years as well. We will enter into exploratory talks as quickly as possible in order to form a government that stands for one thing success for the people of this country thank you very much once again all the best the work is just beginning. You can also sense the sense of relief there from that the media has managed to hold on to its position as the Number One Party in latin blood and hes someone whos been campaigning furiously ahead of this vote has any this he has he is somebody who has been. Chief of government of this region for quite a long time he is in a sense a representative of a kind of older generation within the social Democratic Party and he ran a pretty pretty traditional campaign. And one of what one very significant factor i think in brandenburg which is a very large geographically very large area in the southeast of brandenburg these coal mining areas which ought to be shut down drew money is getting out of coal because of the climate effects of coal but in this region of course that is a very significant economic factor and the social democrats have been campaigning very hard for Financial Relief for these regions that Financial Relief in fact was announced was spoken was was. Confirmed by the Central Government just days before this poll that may well have played a role did my voice because that he would do everything necessary to defend that region and to support that region also that in fact played into his hands. Also for the social democrats whats important is this perry urban area this area around the burden that i was talking about earlier thats important for the greens its also important for the social democrats theres also progressive moral left leaning voters in that area of brandenburg and i think there too the social or government democrats may well have consolidated their position we heard that theyre talking about exploratory talks to form a government and has if we take a step back from dissecting kind of the individual particularities of fun back in saxony we are looking again at what kate brady said earlier confirmation of a really changing Political Landscape here in germany i mean what does what do these results tell us about that well traditionally they were basically 3 parties involved in kodesh ns in germany the conservatives the social democrats mores of equal strength and then the provider for the necessary majority was normally the free democrats the business friendly smallish party but thats changed the free democrats change their additions once they ruled with the conservatives once with the social democrats. That was no longer possible for in recent years and so weve had these grand coalitions that has been the only possibility of forming a majority between these 2 biggest parties that time is over these 2 biggest parties are no longer big enough to form a coalition on the ground coalitions are no longer enough to provide a majority that means we would need coalitions of at least 3 parties and in addition to that the free democrats are struggling to get into parliaments in these 2 regional parliaments they will not be in parliament so were talking about coalitions possibly between the social democrats and the conservatives a kind of grand coalition in addition to the greens because of the cut as we talk about the Kenya Coalition here. The kenyan flag that can be like that thats right the fact of the colors of the kenyan flag or possibly a. Addition between the 3 lift leaning parties thats the social democrats the left and the greens. Theres all sorts of permutations that are possible now all that makes finding governing coalitions a lot more difficult and theres even the possibility that there will be minority governments in other words that the government will be formed with alter having a majority and that it will be looking for majorities from case to case as decisions are being made or various roles or various necessary decisions you will then have a very very difficult always looking for a new coalition for issues theres inflation or that has to be passed already turned as you said that were seeing confirm not just here in germany but across europe pons lets remind our viewers who might just be joining us of the news that were following projected results here in show the far right alternative for Germany Party making big gains in 2 key state elections in eastern germany weve been watching them very closely they also show the mainstream parties likely to finish both 1st in both states voters in saxony put chance on the michaels christian democrats in 1st place the a. S. D. In 2nd to voters in neighboring plug put the social democrats and 1st the a f t just behind them. And lets look at those numbers the latest project results we have now on a partial count of the vote of the result of this stage in the state of blumberg shows the social democrats currently governing the state at 26. 5 percent and maintaining top position losing votes theyre down more than 5 percent chance or michaels christian democrats are 15. 5 percent the left party a 10. 4 percent a significant loss for them as well we should say the far right if you coming in at 23. 8 percent that makes them a 2nd Biggest Party in blumberg those numbers keep creeping up there as the results come in we were just talking about that and the greens are taking 10. 2 percent that is a good result for them this Regional Party that youre looking at here this is the. Behind him but united Civic Movement free voters probably the 1st time youve heard of them theyre taking 5 point one percent and the business from the f. T. P. Are at 4. 5 percent other parties completing the picture at 4 percent. And lets get the latest projected results from saxony the numbers there we have for you chancellor merkels c. D. U. Currently governing the state they come in at 32. 3 percent so holding on to their position as top party the left party at 10. 3 percent also a big loss for them down a more than 8 Percentage Points the far right a. F. P. Coming in at 27. 8 percent clearly in 2nd place not that far behind from the christian democrats or the greens taking 8. 6 percent the f. T. P. Of 4. 8 percent the others accounting for 8. 6 percent of those projected results. All right lets go to thomas starr on the ground in bunder book i think is that the outer thats a town where the f. D. A. Has been holding an Election Party thomas tell us more about whats been going on there and how the results have been going down in. Some of the biggest political thinkers in the a. F. C. Like for example on exam begala here in nevada not far away from pots on a percentage of the results as a as a victory as a positive result for the a. F. P. Despite the fact that we also have to clearly say to me that the a. F. P. Was hoping for more they were hoping to become the strongest. Here in the branded judging by the numbers that we have it doesnt seem to be the case in any case for the a 50 deaf resenting it as a positive result in part because of the growth that they have how did recently they have clearly stated that they managed to take voters away from the traditional potties that they have managed to represent some of the interests of eastern germans and in fact that is also reflected in some of the statements some of the slogans that weve seen here but the other side of the story again they were hoping for a historic moment on that historic moment is one that didnt happen it is interesting to see what he talked to people here in front of of not only here in this party but in a round brown in a book that there is a certain sense of dissatisfaction when people in brandenburg are os for what is the party that best represents the interests in the future many have odds of the know poggio when when they got their os what party represents best the interest of peace and germans many have also oncet no party so there is a general sense of dissatisfaction that goes a long time thats happened happening for white some time now and while the i if he managed to do all go again not to the extent that they had wished for is to tap into those feelings of uncertainty among the population here in britain and thomas tell us more about some of the issues that are very important to the voters there and plan that the a. S. D. Seems to have really picked up on. It is very interesting question to me because nationally you would tend to think that the way he has managed to get points under voters by focusing for example of the issue of migration an issue that weve spoken here on this show many many times but here in brandon both of the issues are top of the agenda were talking here about inequality for example were talking here about education were talking here about infrastructure all those issues again issues with people especially in rural areas how felt left behind whether it means that a post office has closed or a train line to buy land has not been opened just promised all the local shops has been shut down people in a way feel not only not represented correctly but they feel as 2nd class citizens as many in fact have said and again that is something that the a if the house trying to find on this is to by telling people that they are the party that best represents the interests other parties however have also managed to attract voters in particular in areas because its important to stress that they said action is not only about the f. T. This election is also about other policies and how they managed here in fact the social democrats managed to become the Strongest Party once again theyve been the strongest body the social democrats since 990 and that is something that according to the results that we have they will be able to continue they will be able to continue becoming Strongest Party here on the such they will also have the 1st chance to try to form a coalition with other parties although they have clearly said that there is no interest whatsoever in flying to find a coalition with the. Young thomas a little while ago we heard the general secretary of the social democrats last thing by speaking precisely on that topic lets listen to what he had to say. As a commission to go i have to say there are mixed feelings and a lot of humility and the truth of course im happy that we managed to gain so much ground in the final stretch in brandenburg 3 or 4 weeks ago we were almost in 4th place in the polls. Then dietmar voice really got the s. P. D. Going into a strong position against the far right to know that if they took on topics that interest the people in the state they were everywhere and they talk to people and they really got the voters out of this now looks like were number one in brandenburg and deep my voice will remain state premier and im extremely happy about stashes thats a great signal for the s. P. D. Success for saxony i expected more for the s. P. D. The far right after you get high results in both states that puts a damper on the evening you just said to us was. Ok thomas listening to what last king by a general general secretary of the social democrats had to say there lets focus on what he had to say about fun talking about the campaigning in the weeks leading up to the vote i mean what was it do you think that that made the difference to keep the s. P. D. Is in top position in that state. I would clearly say so me that there is a sense of relief among social democrats here in to the last minute it was a neck to neck race between the social democrats on the on one element that i would say responds or explains id least that difference that were seeing now in the results is the fact that many voters here in go to the polls last minute some of the polls that we had seen previously had mentioned that out to 40 percent of voters here in the had not made their mind whether they would vote and if so for which body they would vote so it does seem that last minute viewing some of the results of these some of the surveys that people were seeing many voters decided to vote for the social democrats and the social democrats again managed to top the results as far as we have been able to see from the numbers that have been coming in. All right thomas thank you thomas a spare there in a button board that will come back to look at later for now though lets head to michele there chris our chief Political Editor who is been spending the night there with the city with the Party Headquarters here in berlin i can imagine that theres not just a sense of relief that the christian democrats managed to come out the Strongest Party in. Sacks there but also that their governing Coalition Partner here in berlin the social democrats managed to hold on to their lead as well in blood and book. Yet the reaction i got here reading was that this neither makes under the michaels current socalled grand coalition with the social Democrat Party here in berlin more stable nor does it make it less stable. So it inside of relief though because it does reaffirm the status quo to a certain degree in that both parties got a bit of a black eye at the ballot box but the search of the far right if tea party was avoided having said that they are also losing Center Ground im going to michael see to you and the s. P. D. Those big tent parties and using it also to the green party but a lot particularly in these 2 states to the far right so the message that is taken here this evening is that the cd with the not doing well enough in listening to people and actually solving their problems that is something we hear from politicians a lot the pretty interesting question will be what concrete governments those new constellations of parties will translate into and how much that could become a model for future coalitions here at the federal level indeed well have to see this and ok well come back to you in a little bit but lets check in with kate brady now who has been following the results for us there in saxony in dresden the capital of saxony kate im curious to hear your 1st directive on some of the issues that were moving voters ahead of this but what brought them to the ballot box as we heard from thomas his perspective there in front of her whats the picture been there in saxony. I think i was interested if you look at the break there and see we have some of these results that were getting so far they give an indication to what issues really motivated people to vote the way that they did and its interesting if we look exactly at this result projected result from for the far right a d. Party and we can see that the a. F. D. Was actually the Strongest Party for under thirtys which is very interesting given the economy here in saxony its been one of the stronger economies since germany reunited in 1990 but there is still reasonably high unemployment in many parts of saxony and many young people are still finding it difficult to find jobs here which is why many of them still leave to head west words but also as well its interesting that a different poll actually came out tonight when which an overwhelming number of voters from across germanys political spectrum except for the greens said that they considered east germans to be seen as 2nd class citizens and thats interesting because its very much this sense of loss of identity which has really driven so many people c to the polls at the polls to vote for the far right a. F. D. There is a large number of voices here particularly in states like saxony that were part of former east germany where they feel that east germany in 1900 was simply swallowed up by the west and feel like they have been neglected over the last 3 decades so they see issue particularly when we think about the reunification of germany and the aftermath of that which is still very much being felt here in eastern germany that certainly played a huge role of course another main issue as well here was migration interestingly seems 2016. Migration here in saxony is only increased by about 0. 2 percent so its really not considerable but of course this feeling of being neglected has played on these fears of the northern of people coming here these misconceptions that. Brags about the quality of life that migrants have when they arrive here what kind of benefits they receive and thats something thats resonated with a lot of voices here and certainly being much to the gain of the far right. All right thank you kate there in dresden well come back to you in a little bit hans i want to get your perspective on that we were both raising eyebrows when we heard information that the f. T. Was the Strongest Party for under 30 days in saxony which is something quite remarkable but looking in general at some of the polls the numbers that weve seen and partial vote counts what at this point is your takeaway. Well i mean through to get to the point of the under thirtys that that is very curious i would not have expected that i would have expected that the more left leaning parties are stronger amongst Younger Voters especially the green party maybe the deaf party said that would be a very special polling results especially in saxony i imagine id be very interested to see whether that holds and that would need a lot of analysis i think generally speaking. What we see here is a kind of consolidation phase consultation phase in a situation where the Political Parties the traditional the Political Parties are no longer assured of their. Say of their. Guaranteed to govern and were seeing a concert a day sion in Political Landscape that is going to get a lot more fluid than it used to be where you have several parties that are more or less at the same level of support amongst voters and then 2nd level of parties that also more or less at the same level believe party the green party are more or less at the same level and so on so what were going to get in germany is put it into a situation that as a lot more fluid a lot less predictable that is a lot more. Exhausting in a sense for all of those involved in the politics including maybe journalists because they look what is more difficult to predict what is going to happen i think. The rise of the a of d. Its not clear yet whether that has consolidated the results that they have achieved all are significant similar to the sort of results that they have achieved in recent votes in the European Election and even in the federal elections for the federal Parliament Just over 2 years ago. Its not clear whether that party is going to stay at that level or whether it might actually. Go down and support i think theres a lot of protest votes especially in the east that the he has is able to. Profit from at the moment and those pressures votes are notoriously. Theyre switched notoriously easily from one party to another so if they if he should in some sense no longer be the flavor of the month as it were amongst voters that says its possible that that could also get produced all right perhaps exhausting but also very Interesting Times in german politics we will continue to bring you the latest on these elections but lets go to karl nasa now for an update on your world news. Mines have big problems. While not jumping for joy. With cucina fitting in perfectly. All right im going to hand things back over now to still may with our continuing coverage of todays key Regional Elections in germany. Thats the story the news that were following for you right now a surge in support for the far right alternative for Germany Party was not enough to dislodge the mainstream parties in key Regional Elections chance on americas christian democrats lost ground but remained the Largest Party in the state of saxony in blood in both the social democrats finished 1st in both states the a. F. D. Finished a close 2nd and lets get a look at those numbers now the latest projected results based on a partial count of the vote the results of the stage for the state of fun book shows the social democrats who currently govern the state at 26 point one percent theyre maintaining that top position the c. D. U. Coming in at 15. 7 percent of the left party a 10. 7 percent theyre down nearly 8 Percentage Points the f. T. Coming in at a young close 2nd to that number is creeping up the gap between the 2 getting a bit smaller between the social democrats on the far right there at 23. 7 percent the greens at 10. 6 percent a good result for them this is the b. B. V. D. Party is the Smaller Party that comes in at 5 percent the s. D. P. At 4. 4 percent of the business Friendly Party and all the other parties making up the rest of the spectrum here coming in at a 3. 8 percent we also have the projected results for you from the saxony chancellor michael c. D. U. Which currently governs in the state remains the Biggest Party coming in at 32. 5 percent suffering losses however down nearly 7 percent the left party is at 10 point one percent losing almost half of their votes thats something well also have to look at the s. P. D. The social democrats at 7. 8 percent significantly down there a loss for them the far right if tea coming in at 27. 8 percent placing them in a very clear 2nd there the greens taking 8. 4 percent good for them in the f. D. P. A 4. 6 percent the other is counting for 8. 8 percent of those projected results for getting a bit of a coup. Picture as we go as those partial vote counts get a little bit more concrete lets go to michelle a christian or who is at the city used Party Headquarters here in berlin lets get the perspective again of what the implications are on a National Level of the stalled because we were talking about the fact beforehand that this could perhaps threaten the stability of chance on americas government that no longer looks so likely does it. Possibly one can say that its a Big Tent Party and certainly here the conservative c. D. U. Party feel they got away fairly lightly and there was a sigh of relief here when it became clear that they would remain the Strongest Force in the state of saxony a couple of Percentage Points between them and the a if t. V. Is seen as something that gives them a bit of a safe distance to now interview and try and find a government which who gets a lot more complicated i had the chance to speak to some. Leaders of the top leadership here in the conservative headquarters and to the sense here was that this neither makes under machall self declared final government final term in office more stable nor does it make it less stable and after all the overall fear has been of the far right a of d. And of the de stabilizing effects a clear signal or the social democrats being beaten by the if he could have that for that very coalition that governs germany with germany of course still being seen as a beacon of stability. And still in the other big game weve been talking about ahead of these elections is of course how the greens will do a party that really has been surging in the rest of the country in the west and robert how about who is the cold party chair of the greens us spoke earlier lets listen to what he said. By the good news these Election Results are the best weve ever had in both states theyre about as good as the european Election Results are completely different conditions id like to remind you that in the European Elections at a regional level we said it was making a statement that was the perfect Election Results for brandenburg and saxony and now were back again under completely different and much more difficult conditions. Michel you spent some time with that party leader back ahead of this vote they were campaigning heavily in front of bergen saxony how good of a result is this for them. But it is absolutely a very very good result for the although its slightly below what some polls that showed just 2 weeks ago they were seen as doubling their results they kind of didnt manage to do that but i also got the songs to talk to well but hard as those because were going sky high and i asked him whether the green party was the new center of germany kind of political Center Ground on the new set yet that before country not just with the debate on the environment but also on other issues in terms of a social market economy the greens increasingly accept that that is their future role more towards the center so were seeing a very Interesting Development too with the think ted party is clearly in decline and the greens offering a potential future Center Ground there at the big parties in decline and yet Still Holding on to their top posts in both elections in saxony the christian democrats remaining the Strongest Party and the minister president of that state Michelle Ketchum whos been leading the government there with the christian democrats in that state did speak a bit earlier to his supporters lets listen to him now. Now the weve done it this is a message coming out of saxony this evening a large majority of people who are standing up for this country who want something the friendly face of saxony has won many thanks to you. Yet michelle they could sense that relief you were talking about there from. Really pushing hard ahead of the spota to win over as many voters as as possible and it seems like the christian democrats were able to mobilize supporters in that state in saxony. All right it looks like michele i cant hear us at the moment having some trouble with that connection to our chief Political Editor of you know a weve just been talking with michelle about the christian democrats who heard that from michelle and you said in particular has been very effective in bringing back support for the christian democrats in the state of saxony if we look at these you know partial vote counts they the c. D. U. Came in a 32. 3 percent i believe are the latest numbers and that is significant because there were some at some point ahead of the but we thought they could come in 2nd place. There was a vague possibility of that the f. T. Was forging ahead in the polls some time ago but in most recent trip polls of the last week or 2 it seemed clear that the christian democrats would be able to defend their position as the Strongest Party there is i think michele a crutch much of the current premier in that state did play a very Important Role in mobilizing Additional Support or mobilizing this support for his party he really crisscrossed the country his states tirelessly he spent a lot of time Grassroots Campaigning barbecuing with people talking to people on the streets and marketplaces and so on but what he also did is that he very clearly took rather right of Center Position for his christian democrats he did distance themselves very clearly from the f. T. He said he would never join any coalition with them will call them into a coalition with his party did not want to cooperate with him but at the same time he did move his party and his statements more towards the right that seems to have been a successful strategy in that state but it is a strategy that is the in dispute in the christian democrats in general in the National Polity and im going to medical spotty they are. Factions in that party that would in fact want to do the opposite and want to move the party more towards a kind of Climate Friendly more left of Center Position so i think within the christian democrats to this discussion is going to continue in what direction the party should move theres no final decision on that in these elections to provide more as you said it seems ever for the party there in saxony lets see what is worked in London BridgeThomas Ferris been there all night with the f. T. Election party there lets go back to him and thomas bring us up to date on whats been happening bear and how the a. F. P. Sees that theyre resulting in a partial vote count but from what we know so far they see. There result in bundaberg. Talking its absolutely clear that the if he was expecting a boy in fact until the very last minutes of this election they were hoping to become the strongest potty here in the book which by the way would have mocked a 1st time that the a. S. D. That a far right party had become would become a stronger spot in a state election that did not happen and from that perspective you do sense some disappointment among the members of the same time however when you offer them about it when you ask them specifically about their reaction to this vote they present it in a positive total they say that they see this also as a as a big truth he has a mandate that they see the fact that many people have supported not only now but also in the possibly even increase in voter support and thats something that will be able to hear is presented as a victory but again its important to see the other side of the namely that they were expecting bold they were hoping to become strong dislodging here in front of all right so some competing narratives there thomas said definitely very interesting to watch what we see come out of this thomas farah for us there in kind of broken van thats a small town there with the if hes done particularly well we also have kate brady who has been the in saxony today and also really covering the vote in sacks in the last few weeks for us. What do you think the stories that we take away for from these results of these partial vote count results that we have there in saxony what do they tell us about how the state voted. Well certainly this is just confirmation of what weve seen in some other recent very see if you look back to the European Elections as well that if they came out there with about 25 percent of the vote right now theyre looking at maybe walking away without a way the about 27 percent of the vice they see even hair in a saxon 8 but it does seem that perhaps maybe he has plateaued hair now in eastern germany but of course this isnt something that is going to be taken lightly or shouldnt be taken lightly by those Big Tent Party namely anglo mccalls conservative c. D. U. Party and the social Democrat Party of course it looks like that combination of a coalition here in saxony is off the cards which of course is still going to be quite some food for thought back in berlin the exact same coalition combination is currently the formation of the National Government which is already being faced in its own crises and problems at National Level in recent months so a lot of food for thought but right now it will be really a matter of winning voters back now in the run up to this election it was about trying to make sure that voices headed out and at least for the parties that those big tent causes them a name was to make sure that voters didnt vote for the far right a. F. P. And that strategy to a certain extent seems to have succeeded weve seen an increase in turnout at the polls as well today people obviously taking this election very seriously here in saxony but this government however that might whatever that might look like in the coming weeks of course there will be now long arduous talks to form a coalition here in saxony the main message i think is that the politicians here need to find they listen to voices there are still 75 percent of voters here who didnt vote for the far right i have to and havent spoken to a lot of voices in the. Region not only in the last couple of weeks in the run up to this election but in previous months there is still a sense of neglect and the sense of loss of identity but these some voices just still dont feel that they can cast their vote for the far right a. F. D. C. That shouldnt be underestimated just because many people didnt vote for the far right after a it doesnt mean that they dont still feel neglected and they want to be heard and as germany continues now with infrastructure plans and digitalize ation these are local issues which are affecting National Politics and states like saxony here in form in which in areas where information they want to be heard right now they dont feel that way when you look at some of the local infrastructure there as towns he had not far from the city senses where those books only every hour people are struggling to even get a good Internet Connection and this in germany europes biggest economy so its quite understandable sometimes why people feel this frustration and some of them as a result of that frustration have felt that they want to cast their votes in favor of the far right a. F. D. So a lot of talking to be done hereon saxony but also in the coming months voices will now be waiting to see action all right kate brady for us there in dresden kate thank you so much for that analysis. I want to ask you about what were just hearing there from kate you know it is important to mention that if you with more than 27 percent of the vote in saxony and more than 23 percent of those are 6 significant vote shares but there are plenty of people who didnt vote for the far right what do you think that lawmakers on a federal level can can look at and take away from here and perhaps work on in terms of satisfying some of those voters who still feel really frustrated as we just heard because i think the issues that kate was talking about issues such as theres a bus if we all if youre lucky there is no doctor nearby that you can get to ease the very. No shop in town anymore those issues of rural neglect i think you might call it are not issues that are particular to germany if you think about the yet a Vest Movement in france that is in fact the kind of motivation that drove people onto the streets in france so i think whats been happening in germany as well is that there has been a lot of concentration on Industrial Areas on city areas there has been a deep population of the rural areas people have been moving out of that into the city centers cities have become attractive again but at the same time the people that have been left behind in these rule areas feel left behind as i think they have some reason to feel left behind so i think the Central Government really does need to make sure that these kind of regions do not lose their connection to the centers to the urban centers and the connection is as if it can be very simple it can be a train connection it can be an Internet Connection it can be a bus connection these people need to feel that they are not left all out in fact this is not something that is so stripped of to east germany there are rules or perry urban areas in western germany as well where the problems are very similar i think in Central Government those kind of issues resolving those kind of issues will go a long way towards such as fighting these kind of protests and as i was saying earlier protests on the tories difficult a lot of people have been voting for the f. T. It used to be that especially in the east it was the left party that was the party of protest. A lot of people that used to vote fall left on the voting far right that the motivation behind it is the same protest against the fact that they feel not. Fully respected by by put into sions theyre sending a message to the Central Government and policy echoes the general secretary of the christian democrats who spoke a little bit earlier what do we listen to what he said. And. Looking back on these Election Campaigns today we look back on 2 difficult campaigns that had to be carried out under difficult circumstances. Going today we have mixed feelings when we look at the results both joy and disappointment. And. My thanks to all the people who worked on the campaigns who put their heart and soul into the fight off your. Mind my thanks also go to the voters who chose the c. D. U. Today and place their trust in us. Daughter and today i send my thoughts and thanks to all the c. D. U. Candidates who put their heart and soul into the party but in spite of their tireless efforts failed to win election to the state parliaments. In the. You know hands were speaking earlier it is a sign of the current day politics in germany that the christian democrats are relieved and celebrating that theyve taken big losses in the safe but still ended up the most powerful party and this is something weve been talking about since federal elections 2 years ago has anything changed with these big parties have a change of strategy what do you think theyre going to have to do Going Forward well in fact you have to say that both the big parties and in germany both the christian democrats are going to americas christian democrats we still say and the social democrats are themselves going through a process of transformation partly because their leadership is changing drastically is america has said that she is not going to. Stand for election for a new term in office she has handed of a Party Leadership to a success on the great come karl rove who has just been made the defense minister in the German Government so there is a process of transformation going on within the christian Democratic Party which. To some extent prevents it from actually talking about the issues actually thinking about what needs to be changed in terms of policy so that these kind of Voting Results for the f. T. Can be avoided the similar sort of thing is happening within the social Democratic Party which is lost a lot more votes than the conservatives have. In some cases today and saxony its the single figure party they have less than 10 percent of the vote there and they are looking for a new leadership theyre looking for a new direction there are serious tensions within the party about whether or not to participate in the grand coalition whether or not to turn the party more towards the left wing spectrum and there again. The discussions about the issues are somehow taking 2nd place so in a sense we all know what these big part of should do what the big issues are Climate Change to give digitalisation the kinds of connections for old people that we were talking about a little.
