A pilgrimage to the town in new york state thats now a shrine to those 3 days of the peace love and rock n roll. Im sara kelly welcome to the program to Gibraltar Supreme Court has ordered the release of the Iranian Oil Tanker seized by britain last a month and thats despite an application by the United States to keep the ship in detention the chief justice said that iran had guaranteed in writing that the tanker was not delivering oil to syria which is under a huge sanctions Gibraltar Police time to the british navy seized the vessel the grace one at the beginning of july it was suspended suspected excuse me of taking the iranian oil to. Syria which would violate e. U. And u. S. Sanctions now iran denied any wrongdoing and 2 weeks later it seized a british flagged tanker. To race a trooper who joins us now from iran. And islands on the strait of hormuz teresa tell us these latest developments of were hearing now from devotional what does that mean for the stand imperiled that british flag tanker being held by tehran well thats the news has been waiting for the past few days because in those days preparations have been made for potential exchange i was also within the Iranian Revolutionary guards told us that the british tanker has been moved lately from the place it was detained a couple of weeks ago and kept since then to a place closer to the port and blonder abbas and that port is a place we cannot go because were told that theres an increased number of st paul military forces there so now as soon as the bridge and the runyon tanker and give is released the chances are high that the same will happen to the british here in the strait of hormuz but so far theres no confirmation for that yet from any official and we know iran has repeatedly threatened to block the strait of hormuz in the conflict with the United States could have blockade happened if the u. S. Still tries to seize the iranian vessel in travolta. Yeah rouhani has threatened that a couple of times already but so far ron has never done so but detainment of the british ship alone has slowed down trade here in this very important strategic region for International Trade a lot i was out in the strait of hormuz today with a boat and i could hardly see any ships the only oil tanker i saw at all was an iranian one so thats obviously the detainment of this ship alone was enough to scare other traders away so its important to know that the strait of. The Global Oil Consumption so it has a tremendous effect on International Trade and we have some positioning with regard to the strait of hormuz internationally we just want to highlight the European Unions effort theyve actually proposed sending a naval force to protect merchant ships in the persian gulf whats a rons view. Well ron totally rejects that altogether because tehran considers the persian gulf its own backyard and it feels it is responsible for the safety of shipping there so iran is willing to put together its own Naval Mission with other neighboring countries like oman qatar the United Arab Emirates even saudi arabia but so far that was not excess yet but iran says any other country sending. To the persian gulf is a Security Threat and thats not only for countries like the u. S. Great britain or even israel that iran considers enemy countries but thats also true for European Countries iran and iranians agree here that any other country sending ships you know is a Security Threat to iran. Used to race a trooper and iran thank you. And lets get more now with scott lucas professor of International Politics at the university of birmingham in the u. K. Welcome to the program scott and what do you make of this decision by the court into baltar to release the iranian vessel. Well i think legally its a pretty straightforward decision in that the 1st minister did not ask for the ship to continue to be held there is an assurance that it was not one to deliver oil to syria which would violate e. U. Sanctions and the u. S. Requests through the Justice Department was rebuffed because it has nothing to do with that matter but politically thats a huge question does the United States now put pressure on the u. K. Which said this was a matter for the general to courts to try to someway reverse this for modify this and still hold the ship does the u. K. Resist do the americans go even further which was not only a split with the u. K. But with the European Union. And we know the United States they want to seize the iranian tanker themselves. Are those efforts now dead oh enough hes dead under the trumpet ministration when its trying to reduce all Iranian Oil Exports to 0 which is why they very much wanted to keep holding on to the ship but i think the question is whether they keep pushing this particular matter given that the british are looking for the release of their u. K. Flight tanker possibly later today or whether the americans say ok we lost on this one but now well try to find out otherwise to try to cut off iranian ships. Its not as all of this leverage because i mean it appears as if the United States is trying to sink any behind the scenes efforts made by british diplomats to end the tanker dispute in and really go its own way. It gives britain a huge choice and that is either it stands alongside its European Partners it stands alongside the decision of the Gibraltar Court and says no we have to proceed with this we have to proceed then with diplomacy over this matter or does it only 48 hours after the u. S. National security adviser the hardliner john bolton was in london do they surrender almost or give way to the United States which will distance themselves from the europeans which may force a showdown with the iranians i think the new johnson government which has only been in office in a month has a big choice and which way it goes will say a lot about the new Prime Minister and whether hes ruling to basically give up europe to side with washington scott lucas thank you thank you. Lets get a quick check now some other stories making news around the world the Washington Post newspaper is reporting that an autopsy performed on Jeffrey Epstein the disgraced u. S. Multimillionaire found several broken bones in his neck Forensic Experts say that such injuries can be caused by suicide by hanging or by strangling eps he was found dead in his jail cell on saturday he was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. A Spanish Charity rescue ship with some 150 migrants on board has been allowed to dock at the italian island of lampedusa it comes amid a legal fight over whether passengers can leave the vessel yesterday an Italian Court overruled the interior ministrys ban on the ship docking italy says that 6 e. U. Countries have agreed to take in the microphones. A russian passenger plane was forced to make an Emergency Landing in a field after a collided with a flock of birds the collision caused both engines of the airline to fail shortly after takeoff from a moscow airport all 233 people on board survived although dozens of passengers were treated for injuries. And jailed leader of hong kongs 2014 prodemocracy protests has been released on bail many time was sentenced to 16 months in prison for his role in what became known as the Umbrella Movement his release comes as hong kong experiences its largest wave of antigovernment protest in decades sparked in june by a controversial extradition. Pakistan says that at least 8 soldiers 3 from pakistan and 5 from india have been killed in an exchange of fire in kashmir but media reports quoted officials in new delhi denying deaths on their side and the indian army has not get issued an official statement at Independence Day celebrations in delhi indias Prime Minister defended his decision to end kashmir special status in a run for modi was speaking more than a week after the Indian Government scrapped the semi autonomous status of the part of the region that it controls pakistan also claims the region as its own. Indias National Flag unfolds at Independence Day celebrations in delhi a symbol not only of 72 years of freedom from british rule but now also perhaps of the countrys nationalistic shift months after his landslide election when Prime MinisterNarendra Modi defended his recent decision to strip kashmir of its special status he said the step would restore the disputed regions past glory. Oh it can greatly contributed indias development journey. We should all make an effort to restore their old glorious days. With. The new arrangement as a result of these efforts. And it will work directly in the interest of citizens. As nobody spoke indian controlled kashmir spent its an 11th day under a lockdown and Communications Blackout authorities have cut internet and phone links detained more than 500 leaders and activists and Restricted Movement with police roadblocks. Meanwhile in pakistan black flags flying at half mast the country observing what it calls a black day to protest made his decision on kashmir and express solidarity with residents that tensions between india and pakistan hanging like a dark cloud over the region. Far right violence in germany is on the rise thats according to the countrys interior Ministry Authorities recorded more than 8 and a half 1000 offenses in the 1st half of this year in the country and many people fear that they could be targeted because their names have appeared on far right enemy lists distribute on the line the interior Ministry Says that the lists dont pose a tangible threat but critics say authorities are not taking matters seriously enough. Ruben i gave his name is on an enemy list put together by rightwing extremists they also put his address online in an attempt to scare him and his colleagues. In my view go we get a lot of Death Threats. Sometimes these Death Threats are very concrete. Its something we live with and weve made a decision to deal with it so were not intimidated by it and. The reason ruben noisy about its on this list is that he works for c watch an organization that rescues refugees in distress at sea. Right wing extremists. Constantly uploading lists of their political opponents online the same list that ruben norgate bow is on also includes journalists and geo team members and politicians sometimes with insults next to their names and other less time its jews their names are marked with a star of david and although the authorities are aware of these lists and most german states they have not informed the people who are named. Are authorities taking this matter seriously enough in june conservative politician but a little care was shot dead by an alleged right were going to stream asked that his name had appeared on a list compiled by the n. S. U. An extreme right tara network. The victims advice and reach out documents rightwing and racist attacks unlike the German Interior Ministry workers here think the lists are definitely dangerous. That. Data is it not tonight was it. Is going to be used. As can reach our host is a danger maybe not right now for this could be the case in the future. So the danger if is really being laid down. Is an expert on right wing extremism he wants the authorities to be more transparent and better at communicating especially where it concerns those who have already experienced hostility and then no more of a target than have. These it only be fair to these people already danger now for even more sort of a good bargain ferreted if the Security Services were doing a good job they would see that danger and make that assessment of public. Ruben no i gave has no idea who put him on the list but it wont stop him doing what he believes and im saving the lives of refugees out at sea. Lets get more on the story now were joined here in the studio by hans scared political scientist specializing in policy and Security Management welcome to the program how many people are we talking about here in terms of being on the still called enemy lists the ministry of interior says about 20000 persons that is a huge number indeed but dont forget we live in times of the internet as wide access to addresses in the internet and from public sources and so on and is that how theyre going about compiling them i mean largely from Internet Sources i think saw bank account of the addresses and the names from the internet and from publics sources of course of the telephone books talking to people and so on and events no huge number as mentioned before more than 20000 what do you say to the critics who essentially say the authorities have to be more transparent about what exactly is going on here i think so because. 1st of all. The president s should be informed that they are part of the list because security and unsecure feeling could or could if they are not informed i think feel for it is should give information to people i mean the interior ministry itself it says the following it says being on one of the list doesnt automatically mean that you are necessarily danger i mean are some lists more dangerous than others or there are various levels i would agree to that because you have to see it as a part of hate crime activities. I think the lists anyone its not crimes of its helpless but the whole part of the. Much bigger and much broader incidence of heat crime that we have in these times and. I think not every person that is listed is in danger and really in danger because the intention of the ole thought is is to put fear on to create fear to uphold fear in the population you mentioned far right crime hate crime for example do you see a link in the fact that we have seen an uptick in that within germany and the fact that these lists do exist i think thats the connection indeed between the lists and the growth of right wing extremism we have had one of thousands of incidents last year crimes and Violent Crimes from the right the number of 1000 has existed before. But the brutality of the attacks has. Big growth thats the difference between the year 201820124 example so we have rising brutality and i could guess that the listing persons office. Is an offer to right wing extremists presence to create anything. Instruments and that could be violence indeed as well im scared to ask a political scientist specializing in policy and Security Management thank you for joining us to share that exact thing. For youre watching t. V. You knew still to come on the program on the 50th anniversary of the iconic rock festival visits woodstock where peaceful love and rocknroll are never out of style. But 1st we had to the United Kingdom where the new Prime MinisterBoris Johnson is making preparations to take the country out of the European Union on october 31st without a deal if you cant get a negotiated exit thats worrying many politicians including the leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn whos planning a vote of no confidence in the government to try and stop a no deal drugs it has what corporate had to say promises seems desperate to take britain out of the European Union 31st of october that to do the problems of the huge on food medicine jobs industry and investment but he also seems to be loading up with donald trump and all of his administration to do some kind of sweetheart trade deal which could be damaging to our jobs and regulations in this country on the environment on food standards on workers rights and all those kind of things hes taken away from europe into the arms of donald trump by his obsession with a no deal bricks and Jeremy Corbyn speaking earlier there the oceans are filling up with plastic and dealing with it poses one of the great challenges of our time now researchers have shown that the problem isnt just confined to the worlds waterways tiny pieces of plastic are increasingly entering the atmosphere as well and from the air they are spreading to some of the most Pristine Environments on earth. Millions of tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year where the sun and the waves eventually break down the waste into microscopic pieces these socalled micro plastics now blanket the Marine Environment they found and sediments floating free in the water and inside practically every organism that lives in the sea now micro plastics have also been found in snow the researchers looked at how it got there. Were trees and that we have. Eyes on the beaches. But also on the link to the of. The tiny pieces of plastic are so light that if they leave the water and dry out they can be picked up by air currents and carried high into the atmosphere once theyre like dust or pollen they act as a core for coalescing raindrops or in colder regions ice crystals when they grow heavy enough the rain drops or snowflakes fall back to earth as precipitation taking the microscopic pieces of plastic along for the ride. The polar end marine scientists from the and fred begin to institute in germany looked at snow samples from a range of sites in europe and the arctic they discovered that even in some of the most remote areas on earth like the arctic ice pack a single leader of snow can contain thousands of pieces of micro plastic the discovery that the atmosphere likely plays a key role in transporting plastic has implications not just for Pristine Environments but also for human health. Lets bring in science reporter Derrick Williams is joining us in the studio so how could these micro plastics be harmful to our health well one of the problems when you create plastics is that youre not just making them from carbon and hydrogen these long polymer chains you also to gain all these different characteristics that various plastics have yet to link up those chains and often the the molecules that youre using to link those chains are toxic so weve all heard about micro plastics in the sea micro plastics are entering the food chain the very basic level when it comes to marine life in the and its moving its way up the food chain so thats one danger to human health but this one is a brand new one this is this represents the fact that were probably all breathing in these little tiny micro plastics all the time and so thats actually kind of quite a shocking thing to think about and its also not really been studied that and i mean you cant escape it and even found it in remote areas like the alps like the arctic for example were you surprised by that to be honest as i said shocking is the best word its strange because when you work in science and you hear about micro plastics all the time theyre only present theyre all theyre all over the environment weve been talking about that for years but somehow the idea that its up in the sky and that its snowing down in the arctic ive never really thought about that before so yeah it really did kind of take me by surprise and what else took me by surprise or that are the numbers those are also very striking which is in the arctic alone in a single leader of snow they found 15000. 00 micro particles now compared to the hopes in bavaria they found 10 times that much so were talking about up to 150000. 00 masses of micro plastic in a single leader of snow so thats kind of scary those numbers so what do we all do. Well i dont think its to late aaron it wasnt today that isnt too late but it certainly gives us food for thought in terms of how our relationship with plastic we dont need to be thinking about it a lot more and one of the things that we need to be doing is using less of a particularly Single Use Plastics things like also cosmetic beads things where we know that its a part is present a possible danger down the road we also need to be thinking more and investing more in technology that keeps this micro plastic from forming in the 1st place which means that were developing plastics that dont break down into smaller and smaller and smaller pieces but they can be dismantled at the molecular level so theres a lot of Long Term Solutions in moving towards a fix so much for thought Derrick Williams our science reporter thank you. All this week marks the 50th anniversary of the seminal woodstock Music Festival the event became a defining moment in history as a symbol of the Counterculture Movement and the generations hopes for the future and thats in 69 an estimated 400000 people descended on a farm in upstate new york for 3 chaotic but peaceful days of music and partying woodstock featured superstar acts including janis joplin and jimi hendrix and it became a by word for mind expanding drugs and youthful idealism. Now 50 years on pablo foley l. E. O. s visited the famous. There are reminders everywhere from peace signs to tie dyes 19th sixtys hippie culture is still ever present. But is woodstock become somewhat of a theme park. Mark hedrick has run a souvenir shop on the towns main street for over 20 years. Marketing is a stronghold in any kind of market like this the there was very little marketing done when the concert was done in fact to the best my knowledge there was never assured. That now the marketing stuff came after the fact. But here in the town you know we still like to take advantage of that. The local economy is benefited greatly since the festival took place and it doesnt matter now that it was held over 90 kilometers away in the time of bethel its been 50 years since the woodstock festival and the town of woodstock still draws sizes of tourists every year but why do they come here when many of those werent even born when the festival took place back in 1969. But i think its just i think its not just the work here and. That feeling of woodstock lived a special place for people like the people that believe in peace and this is the place. Back at mark souvenir store business a steady who says tourist numbers are up despite this years festival being counseled the lure of woodstock remains unfettered we do get visitors and many people claim to have been what stuck and. Maybe they were. I think there was an article a number of years ago. The number of people who claim to have been at woodstock is probably closer to like 5000000 residents 500000. The number who attended doesnt matter its the legacy the festival holds for young and old alike on this its 50th anniversary grove. A quick reminder now of the top stories were following for you here at u. W. News gibraltar has ordered the release of the Iranian Oil Tanker the brakes one seized last month thats despite a last minute plea from u. S. Authorities to keep the ship in detention the release could mean a swap with a british flagged tanker being held by iran. Coming up next on news that focus on europe looks at the issues left on resolved after the bridge collapse in the italian city of gentle want a year ago and dont forget we have more news at the top of the hour im sara kelly in berlin thanks for watching have a great day.
