Means no john participation in such a u. S. Mission so calm. Many think might succeed michael as the city uses as a conservative candidate in the next election she is trying to leave all or options open anyway still some confusion there that last week before Boris Johnson took over as Prime Minister in the u. K. The u. K. Proposed a European Naval mission to the gulf to help protect shipping in the strait of hormuz would germany bore me more amenable to a European Mission i personally think so and such a mission under a european flag germany would probably find its role has been similar European Missions in the past some of them quite successful and john vessels where in that flight it was for example that was one mission of off the coast of east africa and to Piracy Mission but if you look at the john navy these days the rest. So many vessels under repair and undergoing an overhauling process so theyre adalat if germany would or even could send ships into such a European Mission so there is some speculation here in berlin the germany might take over the reconnaissance flights given such a European Mission will be monitored by the border stuck the u. S. Is really upping the pressure on germany to just pay to knit Naval Mission there in the gulf the the u. S. Ambassador to germany Richard Grinnell coming out very strongly in an editorial saying germany needs to take on more International Responsibility but germanys foreign minister says that diplomacy is is proper is a priority for this country and he doesnt want to jeopardize that how is this diplomatic track working out well its not only germany its germany together with france and the u. K. And these 3 european powers want to keep at any price the nuclear deal with iran the German Government sees that as a huge political mistake that u. S. President trump has unilaterally pulled out of of that Nuclear Agreement so if the u. S. No asked to join a Naval Mission there are doubts there are questions raised here in germany to what end such a mission will be accomplished if germany perhaps might sleep walking into a war with iran the jump on syrias deescalation and try to negotiate try to keep the nuclear deal percent thank you so much. Correspondent dealing with international and security affairs. Now to the u. S. Where Democratic Party candidates have again clashed in a televised debate has the Party Decides who will take on donald trump in the 2020 president ial election candidates disagreed on issues from immigration and Climate Change to health care and of course how to defeat the republicans the debate further highlighted the identity crisis within the Democratic Party with the divide expanding between those who want major policy changes and others to take a more centrist approach 10 hopefuls lined up but all eyes were on polar Vice President joe biden and his main rival California Senator come on harris heres some of the exchange between the 2 over their plans for Health Care Reform this is the single most important issue facing the public and to be very blunt and to be very straightforward you cant be president trying with double talk on this plan so i think that you should really think about what youre saying but be reflective and understand that the people of america want access to health care and do not want cost to be their barrier to getting at anybody tell you how much theyre plans cause my plans cost 750000000000. 00 thats what it cost not 30. 00 training dollars as president and in 2019 and america for a democrat to be running for president with a plan that does not cover everyone i think is without excuse. The governor of the u. S. Territory of puerto rico ricardo reseller is due to resign to morrow following massive protests as many as 500000 people have taken to the streets in recent weeks protesters were angry about corruption mismanagement of the economy and in response to a recent hurricane the final straw appears to have been a leaked chat laced with obscenity is about women gay people and victims of the hurricane. Center phenomenon went to puerto rico to meet some of those who have been pushing for the governor to go. Hes well known for his hard hitting political and p. G. 13 so alan one of the artists who has inspired to protest in puerto rico he says he is called to be a part of the middle. Act with this concert we wanted to celebrate the some of the fact that we kicked the government i was above us in only 12 days but i also want to motivate people to continue to fight and to protest look how many came here today. Where he worked on his lyrics lyrics that have earned him a reputation as a verse a title artist p. J. Since who else says he writes about whats happening and what affects him right now its puerto rico its political crisis and the anger of the people caused by a Corruption Scandal and text message us in which governs our role say you know this parish ordinary citizens as well as political. Look at all the messages he made phone. In when they were king came he made fun of the oil beaten 902 community he did so many things wrong and he was very civil for everybody to so to like get the message like this guys wrong hes got to get out one of the people targeted by the governor was joined almost Benjamin Torrence got tightly he tells me he was angry but not surprised to find his name in the leaked text message just because hes all. Its been critical of the administration but he didnt anticipate the consequences they were very proud of what happened and really surprised by the extent of the civil commitment and near the computer records for the most part iraq the passive country. My your men we do not take to the streets easily. And if we do the protests are small you can always see the same people and groups you know my persona is a party. For out but also worry that real change will follow thats how many french american seemed to feel since governor say you know and now instead he will step down thats why there are still protests taking place a new governor will soon be moving into this mention right behind but the political crisis in puerto rico is far from over in the streets of san juan puerto say they want to continue their fight and they are hopeful that sooner or later they will get their leaders they believe they deserve. From someone who won we drive sell the protests attracted ordinary people from all over the islands people like omar so to ford to new york and hes wife to write up a couple of still amazed by the size of the crowds and their unity people a walk with the situation are going to do they more than explanations. I dont think i dont think we are ready. For example that when the war nor. What people are are more aware of the situation they argue about politics at their Kitchen Table the governor successor and what should happen next and the past you write out says she didnt pay much attention to politics but the protests really touched her heart. Womens world cup helped bring womens football to a wider audience but despite the. Tournaments success getting involved in the game is still a struggle for many women around the world the festival discover football hopes to change that is an official media partner for the event which aims to help women join the beautiful game and pay in her element back in south africas shes a referee in the Mens Division a job where she comes up against a lot of resistance but she says thats made her stronger. I believe that this woman i am today because of football. In berlin shes running the line at the opening match of discover football an International Womens football festival for most of those taking part 2 ball is much more than just a sport. Without football maybe i could be off on this heat feeling my body and which i will end up being. Affected from a tavi and aids. The Award Winning festival is now in its 10th year in that time womens football has undergone some big changes in many countries such as pakistan parents of younger girls want them to be involved in recreational sport which is very new in our country often it was there was a heavy focus on i could be mia get good grades you know get married you know and life will go on in that cycle however there are still countries where women in sports have to battle for acceptance when i was in the university my friends and even my exboyfriend who was saying that. Theyre me or football im just like ok you can go and me i would be with the football because i know what would give me because i love football. I mean libya pay has shown courage to take on the toughest job on the pitch in mens football she says its given her confidence in herself. Being everything. So i am one person that i believe i am. The people behind discover football hope the support of institutions like the United Nations and d w can help them continue to break down barriers. And one of the women you just saw there in that report is with us here in the studio must hussein from pakistan michele great to have you with us i know youve spent a lot of time in canada when youre growing up but now youre in pakistan back in pakistan working as a coach for Girls Football teams there what are some of the main challenges you face in your work as a football coach in pakistan. So i think the challenge is really i mean there are challenges like the ones i face everyone i learned this recently but basically we have. The challenges stem from. You know sport versus academia or just the just basically permission to play sport. Versus lets say doing other things and then when you move into different socioeconomic backgrounds sport the opportunity cost of playing a sport or indulging in what people consider a luxury is that oh well you could be working instead or you should be helping around the house instead or just playing outside is not something. Traditionally girls might do so when you encounter critics of women playing football how do you how do you go about explaining why pakistan needs womens football so its a good question and it leads to i think a really big answer which is that its you know the critics dont have an issue with specifically football. Its and some some of them might but most people have would take issue with you know is this something you really want to spend your time doing because what are the Career Options or is this something want to be doing after school when you could be studying or is this something you want to even put in school when you can focus you know on on a good academic subjects and so the need for the need for physical well being as part of your education is still its new its nascent its its almost in most Public Schools this is not something that grows or afford it so. Football happens to be a very Inclusive Sport and its the its a team sport multiple people can play dont need a lot to play it. Its one of those things that gets people involved in the game and they experience the joy of playing and so the critics often are you know its not your traditional critic where you might be like oh its not. Just for women it might be a school saying oh we could just focus on it and so if you focus on the values of teamwork and fair play and on a level Playing Field all that its important course now youre just getting in theres a discover football festival here in berlin do you think events like that can help raise the profile of womens football. Yes for sure so the i think the best thing about a festival like this the fact its international is that they they invite they try and invite people who work and Community Based projects maybe not Large Organizations some of them might be but the beauty of it is that when we are working and working people who are Community Community projects realize that you know there are more people out there like them situations and contacts might be different but the same struggles the same problems the same challenges the same barriers and suddenly you dont feel so alone in your work in russia thank you so much show womens football coach muscle hussain for pakistan. In our interactive documentary tour of the writing returns home monday w dot com tanks. Fake hair and real story. Where i come from a lot of women like me have fake hair sometimes the hair style takes up to 2 days thats a lot of time that needs to be filled so people at the salon talk about whats happening in their lives. I became a journalist to be a storyteller and i always want to find those real authentic stories from everyday people who have something to share. With others i must find at the salon i know good quality here when i see ads and read a good story when i hear it. My name is elizabeth and i work at cedar. As expected to the usa it comes Interest Rates but leaves many scratching their heads if the u. S. Economy is booming why the need for even cheap money we talked to one of europes top chief economist richard also coming up a British Companies face a nightmare scenario as the countrys government sets aside another 2000000000 pounds to prepare for a no deal. But come to do business i want to get johnson within good to have you with us while Global Stock Markets are in the red today after the u. S. Federal reserve cut Interest Rates by a quarter percentage point to shore up the economy against risks including trade friction while Financial Markets have widely expected the fed to reduce its key overnight lending rate by 25. 00 basis points to a target range of 2 percent to 2. 25 percent many traders have looked for clear a confirmation of more rate cuts from chief Jerome Powell the dollar rose to a 2 year peak against the euro and to jump to a 2 month high versus the. Again. Now this was the 1st rate cut in almost 11 years that was december 2008 on the tail end of Federal Reserve efforts to support Financial Markets during the recession rates have only gone up since then in line with a recovering and eventually booming American Economy now compare that to the European Central bank where the deposit rate has long been below 0 and the policymakers are still cutting thats put even more pressure on the fed as rate cuts devalue the euro against the dollar affecting trade balances so the feds see is someone sitting between a rock and a hard chair it has to deliver while not rocking the boat. To reimpose delivery of the news was in line with the dry in fact will turn fed chairman have always displayed but there was an underlying note of caution as he explained the committees decision to cut the benchmark rate for the 1st time in over a decade of a percentage point it is intended to insure against Downside Risks from weak Global Growth and trade policy uncertainty to help offset the effects these factors are currently having on the economy and to promote a faster return of inflation to our symmetric 2 percent objective that trade policy uncertainty can be partly put down to the us president s own going fights with china the e. U. And even his north american neighbors there was no direct criticism of the president s policies from the chair of the independent Federal Reserve even if President Trump has himself unrelentingly attacked the feds policies demanding large rate cuts overarching goal the fed has left the door open for further reductions but Jerome Powell says this is not the start of a sustained programme of cuts wall street appeared unimpressed markets suffered their biggest daily drops since may. Well u. S. President on a trump has repeatedly pushed for a larger Interest Rates cut and he quickly reacted to last nights that decision in a tweet he said that fed chairman Jerome Powell had let him down well lets take a look at that tweet what the market wanted to hear from jay powell and the Federal Reserve was that this was the beginning of a lengthy and aggressive rate cutting cycle which would keep pace with china and the European Union and other countries around the welts so did the fed led people down lets ask a custom jet ski chief economist at germany and he joins us in frankly good to have you with us what is clearly i mean nobody expected donald trump to be satisfied with the feds decision but from your point of view was the fed too cautious perhaps you know of being the thing the of the fed actually didnt didnt let anyone down to the fed to stroke a very nice balance between not panicking and at the same time delivering this of its present tory for a straight cut because this is what they said there is no need for the u. S. Economy right now to engage in a long a series of rate cuts of this was a very preventer a 1st rate cut just to so to show that they stand ready to act if more was needed ok so it was like a sort of a sign was still alive we can still act if we want to but dont drop the boat too much unfortunately though the decision on the comments that followed boosted the u. S. Dollar and thats certainly something that donald trump doesnt like at all. You know definitely something that donald trump does not really like and i think he has voiced this already quite quite quite some time but i think you know listen what what is the fed supposed to do the fed is looking at an economy which is running at full employment it is looking at an economy which is in the 10th or 11th year of a very strong cyclical expansion so why should the fed now really engage in a series of rate cuts so they should have a show they stand ready and they think its not the task off the fed actually to engage in some kind of currency war so therefore i think listen i think we should not take all of mr trumps tweet seriously but what does this mean then on the other side of the lente good does it give the eurozone an edge certainly when it comes to exports and trade. I think what we do see right now in markets already since the start of the year that kind of prevented preventers 1st steps by Central Banks trying to stay ahead of the curve has become fashionable these are the buzz words of this year and we know already from the European Central bank from mario drug that they are also preparing new monitory policy action which will then probably come in in september so probably in my view with a rate cut from the e. C. B. And maybe even a restart of the q. E. Program so what we will see is that actually the euro dollar the Exchange Rate will continue to fluctuate around its current levels we will not see strong movements in either direction so which means we still have in from the european side we still have a relatively weak currency which is good for exports but dont expect any shift in either direction all right cast chief economist into germany thank you so much. All right now time to check in with the markets Frankfurt Stock Exchange is trading since bit more than an hour and often entrepreneurship standing by for us after the shares have been heading south with a mixed picture here in europe now than everyone expected this rate so its faltering investors. Had more they got theyre just being greedy they want more just theyre not happy with just one off rate cut but a series of rate cuts despite the u. S. Economy being solid the unemployment being actually had record lows but there is no end to greed there but i mean to be fair to the fed chairman i think its more a case of miscommunication i mean he did he hasnt ruled out fewer i mean further cuts if the need arises he just he just didnt want to give false hopes to the market and eventually send them into a tailspin when the rate cuts did not actually happen so. We all know that. Is not exactly the best communicator its. Monday reporting from a greedy Trading Floor thank you so much for that. And now to some of the other Global Business stories making news german industrial giant siemens has reported a 6 percent drop in net profit in the last quarter thats down to 1100000000 euros the Industry Group claims geopolitical uncertainties and tensions with the drop but confirms its outlook for the. Its barely a week since the conservative party leader Boris Johnson became british Prime Minister and the fears are ready mounted will a strategy of threatening a no deal breaks it leads to just that as opposed to the better deal he says he seeks for businesses thats the nightmare scenario more and now preparing for the west. Right now the opel plant in alice near port is closed for a summer break but soon it might be shut for good leaving over 1000. 00 people out of a job the astra would not be a true britany longer getting made elsewhere in Europe John Cooper has been working here for 40 years he worries about bricks and the plants future we export a super sense of what we build here to try to for call trees in europe all of them called trees in the European Union it would be a disaster for Opel Vauxhall and elsewhere poor of about a factor in general a longer than no one seems to care whats best for the u. Johnson seems more than willing to oversee a no deal breaks it even though the British Chamber of commerce sees that as a worst case scenario. Johnson says the industry is warning so overblown many voters and port agree even those who might soon lose their jobs at opel. On the trip of a lifetime judea south delhi and the ease of phone records and took an interest trip around europe a bike frame from here they went public in greece will be to italy from the netherlands and documented it all on Instagram Facebook is. 20 to be coming countries and once again were taking you on a train trip through europe im the game and im julia and together will be that year of pop summer destinations but what i also discovered. That was 3 weeks ago and back here with me in the studio they survived. 3 weeks so judy what was the most challenging thing about it well one thing that worried me was trying to get along with louise for 3 weeks but i think weve pretty well and that one thing that we found quite difficult was arriving in paris and it being 42 degrees celsius so it was the hottest temperature ever recorded in the city and we had to find creative ways to try to survive the heat so we basically and it up staying in the hotel until it got cooler and then visited the sites in the evening now louisa ive been to most countries in europe ive been to a city behind never be diverted you had to bet its so how was venice and thats of the 2nd question of course its a wonderful city theres so so much to see so much history but we were also quite surprised of how many tourists we actually encountered we found out that actually informing yourself well before going there and also going by night when most of the tourists have gone as good to oh ok so it was very busy you talked before about you said about hidden gems and i believe slovenia was a hit jim why was that yeah it was it was surprising to us how beautiful the country is and we had also play. And the trip so that we visited a lot of cities but slovenia was an opportunity to get into nature so we went hiking on the mountains near madiba or and that was a great way to come away refresh then having experienced gorgeous European Nature and you go away from the crowd yes. Now unfortunately you had to work was. Posting on instagram and facebook and into the interacting with followers on your trip what was that like well we didnt expect actually that it would be such a positive experience we thought we would have critiques but actually most of it was really positive we had people wishing us good journey saying hello every morning commenting on the photos and even someone at the end said that she had tears in her eyes when she learned that we were at the end of our trip and is that is it still going on this process or have you finished everything were still responding to a few messages that we get but from tomorrow we are off on new adventures yet really. What was prague like probably was great i had already been to easy i had already been but it was a great way to experience the city and we took a free walking tour which is something we would really recommend to discover new cities or maybe learn new things about somewhere youve already been and the last trip i saw a picture of it im still fishing for plastic yet it was about all so what else did not. For this is new for everyone but i got married to an answer them right for one day for thats part of a Tour Initiative thats called on tourist amsterdam and the principle is you meet locals and you spend the day together doing things that are good for the city and so we went just that fishing for honeymoon yeah. And now youre divorced im divorced over time but then every divorce now one of the great things about traveling is you meet local people. What was the impression of your fellow europeans oh we met a lot of young europeans and what we found was a lot of people enthusiastic about europe open to people from other parts of the continent and really happy to be able to share common values common interests and just get to know each other better and. Finally introduced me very popular in my day its also popular slow travel would you do it again yes or not yes absolutely yeah yeah well its been great having you here thanks for popping in and have a rest now and. Theres definitely a warning there by showing that the garrison of 10000. 00 troops after all that its there it keeps a very low profile but this is a sign saying were there and if we need it we can use it so important to note china does have 10000 troops there in hong kong standing by if needed well in addition to the verbal warning youve got the Chinese Military also releasing a propaganda video this video shows troops apparently quelling what appears to be a riot in an urban area looks a lot like hong kong tell us about that the video is quite remarkable it contains the commands or is using cantonese which is the dialect of chinese spoken in hong kong and in the Southern Province of going down theres a lot of heavy ordinance in there so far with the protests in hong kong the police have you sponge bombs theyve used tear gas theyve used traditional anti riot weapons here you can see an urban protest situation but its a much firmer response theyre using machine guns theyre using heavy equipment and its a much more serious situation so i think. Theres a lot we can read into this and i dont think its over interpreted to say that this is a signal to the protestors that we are prepared as she jumping said a couple of years ago about hong kong is a red line across which they shall not cross that were now looks like theyre saying were not prepared to defend that red line there are concerns that in hong kong we could see another Tiananmen Square situation where the military brutally suppresses a prodemocracy movement do you think thats a plausible scenario i think its a possible scenario i mean over the years weve seen i have seen the chinese. Army against tibet and Buddhist Monks in 2008 and then a couple years later against the weavers in in the room she so have been situations where the army has become involved hasnt been to the same extent as the gentleman square theres also the 70th anniversary of the founding of china the peoples republic this year so that we wanted to keep a lid on stability but that said theres always a fear and theres always a warning element and theres always a possibility that with so many troops there with this kind of equipment that weve seen in the video that things could escalate very quickly for china policy analyst Clifford Coonan thank you so much. To the u. S. Now where Democratic Party candidates have again clashed in a televised debate as the Party Decides who will take on donald trump in the 2020 president ial election candidates disagreed on issues from immigration Climate Change and health care and how to defeat the republicans debate further highlighting the identity crisis within the Democratic Party with a divide expanding between those who want major policy changes and others to take a more centrist approach 10 hopefuls lined up but all eyes were on former Vice President joe biden and his main rival California Senator come on the harris heres some of the exchange between the 2 over their plans for Health Care Reform this is the single most important issue facing the public and to be very blunt and to be very straightforward you cant be president trying with double talk on this plan so i think that you should really think about what youre saying but the reflective and understand that the people of america want access to health care and do not want cost to be their barrier to getting at anybody tell you how much their plans cost my plan cost 7 150000000000. 00 thats not a cause not 30 trillion dollars president and in 2019 and america for a democrat to be running for president with a plan that does not cover everyone i think is without its w. s washington correspondent all of us saw that it was called was following that debate over joe biden is currently leading the polls in the democratic president ial primary how did he do last night. Well joe biden was very large under scrutiny because he did not do well in the 1st round of president ial debates he had a rather weak performance back then so he really tried to make up for that it seemed that worked out partially he clashed with a chemical harris over health care he was then attacked by several other candidates so bottom line joe biden became better but still did not. His expectations what about American Voters who are watching this what do they make of the democrats debate maraton well it depends who youre speaking if you speak to republicans theyre rather content right now about the fact that the democrats are rather busy with themselves democrats in turn are trying to find the rights of political direction to move forward but lets listen to a couple of voices and guests off a watch party here in washington d. C. That i attended early a watch party all of the young democrats. Here its a really really deep problem here we need somebody with some bold vision there are some moderates to do so but there are some extreme solutions i think the biggest challenge is whether or not you want to put this in you know a person who can win the vote or a person who did this weeks round and it sounds like the same thing but its not majority if you warning now who are willing for democrats there that youve repeated if you be true and it isnt even looking at the pound there even if you know better even the issue. The election is still hold over is still more than a year away when will we know who is in fact going to challenge from in next years election. Well theres still a long way ahead and we also still dont have those odds on favorite candidate of the Democratic Party as of now so the next president ial debate will be in september and the threshold then will be somewhat higher but it will take another year in july 2020 in fact until the president ial candidate of the Democratic Party will then be announced publicly all over thank you very much should all of a sudden theyre in washington now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world today in yemen dozens of people are dead after 2 separate bomb attacks struck the southern port city of aden one targeted a military parade while the other hit a Police Station aden is where yemens backed government is based who the rebels linked to read have claimed responsibility for the attack on the parade. U. S. Officials have told American Media outlets that hums bin ladin the son of slain al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in a military airstrike that was considered to be the successor to lead the terrorist group and had a 1000000 dollar bounty on his head but the white house and the pentagon declined to comment because klein to confirm rather the reports United States has imposed sanctions on irans foreign minister mohammad jabot sorry the move comes amid escalating tensions between the 2 countries after attacks on oil tankers in the persian gulf sanctions will freeze any u. Through his foreign minister speaking there well the governor of the u. S. Territory of puerto rico ricardo seo is due to resign to morrow following. Massive protests as many as 500000 people have taken to the streets in recent weeks protesters were angry about corruption mismanagement of the economy and the response to a recent hurricane the final straw appears to have been a leaked chat laced with obscenity used about women gay people and victims of the hurricane. Hunter phenomena went to puerto rico to meet some of those whove been pushing for the governor to go. Hes well known for his hard hitting political and. One of the artists who has inspired to protest in puerto rico he says hes proud to be part of the middle. Act with this concert we wanted to celebrate the fact that we kicked the government out of office in only 12 days but i also want to motivate people to continue to fight and to protest look how many came here today. Where he worked on his lyrics lyrics that have earned him a reputation as a verse a title artist p. J. Since who else says he writes about whats happening and what effect right now its political crisis and the anger of the people caused by a Corruption Scandal and Text Messages in which. This parish ordinary citizens as well as political. Look at all the messages in the form. When they were king came he made fun of. Community he did so many things wrong and it was very easy for everybody to so. Get the message like this guys wrong hes got to get out one of the people targeted by the governor was. He tells me he was angry but not surprised to find his name in the leaked Text Messages because hes always been critical of the administration but he didnt anticipate the consequences if they dont have. Im very proud of what happened and really surprised by the extent of the civil commitment and here the computer records for the most part or all the passive country. My year meant we did not take to the streets easily. And if we do the protests are small because you can always see the same people and groups you know my persona is a party. For out but also worry that real change will occur thats how many friction we can seem to feel since governor will say you know and no instead he will step down thats why there are still protests taking place a new governor will soon be moving into this mention right behind but the political crisis in puerto rico is far from over in the streets of san juan thought to say they want to continue their fight and they are hopeful that so no later they will get their leaders they believe they deserve. From someone who won we drive sell the protests attracted ordinary people from all over the islands people like omar so 2 for 2 and hes a wife. The couple is still amazed by the size of the crowds and their unity people a walk with the situation are going to do they more than explanations. I dont think i dont think we are ready. When the born or a warning from her party but people are are more aware of the situation they argue about politics at their Kitchen Table the governor successor and what should happen next and the past you right now says she didnt pay much attention to politics but the protests really touched her heart. Youre watching the news from berlin weve got more news for you at the top of the hour circle he will be with you then im terry Martin Thanks for being with its. It is time to take one step further and face the. Time to search the. Fight for the truth. To overcome barriers and connect the world its time for dublin. Coming up ahead. And listen has own. A vast expanse and home to people with centuries old traditions. I was. Putting me last hour to a lavish at the hands down to. The house these days theres a hell region has also become known for radical islamists gaining political influence and for young people on the move in search of Better Futures elsewhere we travel to mali and the share for this film. This is 10 book 2 in mali where the streets are once again filled with color and song. Celebrations music laughter and dancing have returned to this fabled and mysterious desert city. Back in 2012 things look very different. In the summer of 2012 armed radical islamists seized control of cities in northern mali including timbuktu. In 2013 a fragile peace was restored to this. City on the transparent caravan route and the un has station the blue helmet soldiers in mali since then. But fear insecurity economic problems and unemployment remain there are few prospects especially for younger molly and. Over 5 years have passed since the occupation but timbuktu is still struggling to regain its identity. Was born here 31 years ago he has spent almost his whole life here and knows nearly every building the only time he left timbuktu was during the occupation when he fled to the capital bamako ali used to work as a tour guide showing americans and europeans his hometown. He agreed to also lead us through the cultural oasis timbuktu. Crafters timbuktu is living together. And then. How the kids are in to look to see the different and Different Countries and different areas because each other you can share everything together you can share food together you can share a life together many things. Used to be living. Here and life is too so different thats why i love to look to similar like mix country. Kind of People Living here. Older brother was also a tour guide and when ali was only 13 he started a company in his brother while he worked thats how he learned english and Everything Else he needed for the job but ever since radical islamists attack the city foreigners have stayed away. Many craftsmen have shops here in temple to alley used to stop by them regularly with tourists. In for more than 5 years now life sold practically nothing and there are no more tourists and only locals occasionally buy something. For. Tourism was once an important industry for 10 but 2 especially for young people like ali. It provided an opportunity for them to make a living here on the edge of the desert. People always bright even now you see people up by the rightful place to come back. Even that to come tomorrow i see all the population of to look to are going to be very happy to head us news to see tourists out of the city out on the area because usually to move is a big song and hes promised country from this minute before they ever win the war and they when they see tuesday are so happy even you guys dont hear people hoping to see you go its been a long time to go see white people i dont think. That used to be very different there was the famous annual festival oldies there in mali for instance which was held twice on the outskirts of town but 2 tourists from all over the world came to see it. That way. Youll go. Thats. What it is all that it was about to lead up to this year but its. Good that thank the festival became part of shared memory and helped forge timbuktus image as a place where trois reg music could be heard in breathtaking desert scene. Since the 2012 invasion however the festival has had to either be canceled or staged outside of tempted. But although the security situation in the city continues to deter tourists music on a smaller scale has returned performed by those pushing against the sorrow and the latent. Threat of islam a sense of. Among them the band booked to jazz they develop their jazz from the traditional music of timbuktu and sing in 3 of the regions languages. I mean music is everything to me. Ive been playing since i was a small child were going to say run for if this from up to me its through music that i met so many different people that i got to play and collaborate with them so its a big deal for me. When the as long as were here we were not allowed to play but they infiltrated us some we had to pack our guitars and equipment away but there was no music. Here for. Musicians from elsewhere are slowly starting to return to 10 back to to give concerts. To what about them in timbuktu we think of music as knowledge and artists as messengers will get to spread the message of music to people in this entire region. As they go there is conflict with the message were spreading without singing is for peace for social cohesion and for progress there. Isnt a good. One singer id isnt making music he repairs motorcycles and. He can only dream of making a living from his music in timbuktu. But since the jihad has ceded power the long. Economy has been stagnating real jobs remain scarce but i think continues to dream of a better tomorrow. I hope that someday people all over the world will know our music. The effects of the occupation can still be seen in timbuktu. It began in 2011 with the revolution in libya which flooded the sahara region with weapons from gadhafi as arsenals. When in march 2012 a military coup distracted the Central Government in bamako rebels seized the opportunity and declared independence in the north which they called. But the movement was commandeered by the Islamist Group on sardines. And in june 2012 and sardined seized control of timbuktu. Our way is peaceful our goal is a religion. We do not need to conquer anything. Condemns violence blame of jihad used to exterminate and throw out of the country those who oppose the spreading of islam. The goal is not to kill people or shed blood the goal of jihad is to rid the country of those who oppose the sharia and the spreading of islam. And it is. Many would not describe this as a peaceful way. For 10 months and sardine try to force the people of timbuktu to abandon their moderate and tolerant practice of islam and to impose their radical version. Women had to wear veils they were public floggings music and dance were forbidden. The girls didnt wear veils before the mujahideen came they said they didnt know that all women. To wear veils they orient themselves on the europeans watch their films the western media manipulate them even if you are from the press you know that the media Like Television and radio manipulate their constantly talking about the western world that is why our daughters and women our children want to lead a western lifestyle. The islamists did not only try to change ways of living and dressing they also destroyed tombs of the saints which they condemned as structures of idolatry the attacks on parts of timbuktu is historical treasures were attacks on the worlds Cultural Heritage. Is one of timbuktu scholars were he is overjoyed that unesco restored the muscle. During the restoration process the destruction of timbuktu was being deliberated by the International Criminal court right you know in the hague in september 26th teen the court reached a historic ruling that for the 1st time equated the destruction of Cultural Heritage with a war crime the islamist leader. Was sentenced to 9 years in prison for intentionally directing attacks against religious and Historic Buildings in timbuktu it destroys part of humanitys shared memory and collective consciousness and renders humanity able to transmit its values and knowledge to future generations. Even timbuktus famous centuries old manuscripts were not safe during the occupation. Has written books about 10 book 2 and the documents serve as important sources the manuscripts are unique testimonies to the cultural history of west africa they were written in arabic and local languages between the 13th and early 20th centuries. Mine is. Very clear through the man is infinitely important for the people of a city that to live that very old live in. Order to do so but to have the Largest University south of the sahara in the 15th and 16th centuries is suncor a university Minus Committee and the manuscripts to cover almost all subjects to louis ology Traditional Medicine history geography physics chemistry and astronomy the last 2 were. During the islamist occupation a rescue operation that has since become legendary was started. In large sections of the manuscripts were reportedly hidden and brought to safety in metal boxes by librarians and other helpers. When the islamists 1st came to timbuktu and they werent really interested in a manuscript. But later some of the less educated whites is who lived here in the library began to unbutton certain manuscripts key. Prandin limon is clearly. A lot when the local people realized what was happening they did everything they could to save the manuscript. I live in my new screen. It remains unclear how many manuscripts were destroyed or stolen during the islamists. Some estimates say it could have been 4000 before the french and mali in armies were able to drive the islamists out of timbuktu. But thousands of manuscripts were hidden and even smuggled as far as the capital bamako including the collection belonging to the family of abdul qadeer hideout iraq who has become known as the savior of the manuscripts. The mamma collection is one of the most extensive and important in timbuktu and is said to contain about 42000 handwritten documents. Only. We packed the manuscripts in metal boxes to counter the safe before smuggling them out. We started transporting them little by little. I rode in a jeep certain small boats. There are also new river. People. This would turn out to be just the beginning securing the manuscript has since become a mammoth task. Abdul qadeer has converted an entire house in the mali in capital bamako also with financial help from germany. It is here that the manuscripts have been digitized catalogued and archived for several years now in order to secure them once and for all from mali and the world. Some on the screen. We cant live without the manuscripts. Often everything we do has to do with them. Because you know when we talk about education or health when we talk about our intellectuals or history everything we know about this comes from the manuscripts. There are reports that the scope and course of the manuscript rescue operation may have been exaggerated and embellished perhaps also to help raise funds. Whatever the truth is the smuggling story has revived the myth of 10 but 2 and the timbuktu manuscripts are undoubtedly an important Cultural Heritage. But the situation in the city is still too insecure to bring the manuscripts back to their home. Were not here and by marco because we want to be here when we have to be here. Then security is restored well go back to timbuktu with a manuscript thats what we wish for physical so it. Got to be a mosque in timbuktu is the largest of its kind in west africa it was built in the 14th century and has been part of unesco World Heritage since 1980. 5 then. Recently became the a mom here like generations before he is his predecessors heir and thus also the temporary owner of the library. Its 8000 manuscripts were hidden during the islamist occupation as well. Now the 26 year old uses the documents to prepare for friday prayers and once again preaches the tolerant and moderate form of his nom for which the desert city always stood in till the islamists invaded. You know through his neck is him get him back to we know no other islam than a tolerant ones in law at the end it it to be a muslim means to accept each other that is islam as a status its forbidden to hama nava this is the islam we practice here in timbuktu fed to medical question this is science from the one issue. They are looking for yes. Oh i am glad. Alert. During this friday prayer alphabet essay you spoke about the evil of ego ism. Was. This is the tone set by his forefathers and the tolerant islam. Or the are that. The. The tour guide is glad that tolerant islam is once again being practiced in his home city. But obviously feels the old fable trading town on the edge of the sahara through which large salt caravans once past has fallen into oblivion. And many things continue to worry him even though the occupation of timbuktu by the islamists was 5 years ago life remains very difficult especially for younger people. And even to go have a sponsor were like us or ladies or myspace meeting each other theres no distance in looks we did break every 2 not saying no for the youngest to do to have a farm somewhere to have fun 2 2. There is excellent food like the meat skewers in this little street kitchen. But because of the bad roads it takes at least 2 days to reach the capital bamako from timbuktu ringback which reinforces the feeling of seclusion. Fear is still a topic here. Then youd feel like saying to book or something see alike but to a nightclub maybe Something Like that dresser you pull off right up and go. And there are still attacks by islamists. In april 28th jihadists managed to detonate car bombs at the airport. The airport building was almost completely destroyed. During the president ial election in august 28th the situation was again tense for fear of violence the turnout was low and there was unrest. In addition to mali and french armies the un troops remain intent but to provide security and peace. Lieutenant colonel beachfront a shot from nepal is on patrol today. The u. N. Mission in mali is one of the organizations most dangerous. To have. To conduct. The city. But. We need. Germany also participates in the un mission in mali around 100. 00 soldiers are stationed here which after afghanistan is the 2nd largest of the current 14 Foreign Missions carried out by the german armed forces. The primary objective in mali is to keep the population safe. And even to. Drag the local political slowly we are people that know what it takes to produce a place for me and that did me. No money down but now this time its a good if you disagree with me and somehow you feel a lot more. Than a pretty terrible offer but i think. The situation has improved a little also economically. The governor attempt to province says this is especially important for younger generations. Well you know this it would look which you know young people and more vulnerable members of society are particularly susceptible to being recruited by islamists or branded used to visit us young that is a danger you think. This is why it is so important to support that we can build their resilience if you give us and then also give them Economic Opportunity that if that activity is good. For the young people in turn back to need and seek a perspective. So does. Who lives in the middle of the city with one of his 3 brothers he has managed to build a Small Business venture to earn a little money. Runs a website together with an american through which he sells postcards from his home city which he then sends all over the world. The idea is simple if tourists wont come to timbuktu then timbuktu can come to them. They say your message you send it here into anyway maybe you can send maybe your United States of america you want a postcard from you know from to look to you would just put it by the web site and from that website you would see your address and then they said you want to could be. That you send it to you know state where you are for. For 10. 00 you can receive a postcard handwritten from one of the most legendary places in the world. Ali and his colleagues wont get rich doing this and if something doesnt change soon in terms of 2 then ali doesnt see a future for himself here anymore. Meanwhile he isnt the only young person trying to come up with new ideas for the future. This is. A Young Filmmaker and friend of. Speakers and other equipment were being brought to our library for a screening. Ligi was nervous because it was his film being shown. He made it together with friends. Of the film is an important project for cultural life in terms of to. This is the 1st time that a film has been shown thats entirely from timbuctoo if you says it is an important moment. And its the 1st time that people from timbuktu will go to the cinema. To do. The story about children in timbuktu is made up. But the films message is real. In the film we show the culture of timbuktu the clothes it has styles the architecture. Everything that concerns our city. We want to create a feeling of nostalgia for the people who no longer in the city. We want to arouse the curiosity of those whove never been here. Illegally and his film crew spent 6 months shooting in timbuktu with the simplest of minas. 2 laptops on a homemade table and 2 stone to serve as an editing suite a sponge had to suffice for the noise suppression during sound mixing. The film was made with few means but plenty of passion. It indeed was a challenge and weve never done it before but we tried and i guess well know tonight how we did it if the audience encourages us well continue. To work with. Everyone was welcome at the film premiere including ali ni ali who wouldnt have missed his friends big day. The screening became a social and cultural event in the desert city. Even the mayor of timbuktu was present. Thank an important this is a decision not to look to said oh boy this film is so important because it was made by young people from timbuktu if you dont go deep down says it is thats a great achievement which we value as you see even one year was in a joes the life of young people in our city its a satisfying feeling but i must say it seemed to satisfy. Legendary timbuktu the desert city on the edge of the sahara still hasnt quite found its way the scars of the islamist occupation and the problems of the last years are still visible. The contrast between 10 book to former glory and the present day creates a certain tension. Still alimi ali feels hopeful especially when he is drinking tea with his friends on the sand and his thoughts are free to wander. I wish my best to move to what i wish him to move to to have a piece. And living together like you used to know to big bear like the my ship song that living together sharing 2 together like you used to know before that i wish into 2 i hope youll be ok. Dreams of finding happiness in his hometown he wants to stay here but there are many Young Africans from his age group who want to leave and look for happiness elsewhere but the path there is dangerous for example when they travel through the republic of me share. This is the so hard on the border between egypt and algeria. Is a great to get close to love june every day he buries people who did not make it through the desert on their journey north. Since 2016 a law prohibiting migration all flight towards the mediterranean has been in force in asia. Since the laws have been a lot of deaths most of them foreigners for them transit via me jet to algeria has been banned they now travel secretly to get lost daya 1st and exhaustion we found the bodies near here in the direction of algeria back that. We cant identify them they all travel without papers its very them that so that was 3 weeks ago to know all the dead people here are strangers. For the competition. There are said to be tens of thousands of dead in the desert the exact figure is unknown europe wants to keep african migrants in africa and to this end the government in asia has been working with the e. U. To secure and close its northern border to libya and algeria. We traveled through the sahara its a dangerous journey to. Make even buy cant theres a risk of sandstorms 40 degrees celsius and theres no shade nor are there roads we traveled in a military convoy. Large unit is the last village before the algerian border. Anyone headed for algeria has to pass through here. For years use of earned a living as a middleman connecting migrants looking for a ride with Truck Drivers for 3 at the time this was legal now everything has changed but you know my other work with the new law i can hardly find any migrants would be i carry luggage back and forth to earn a little money or at least. The use of told us that ever since the e. U. Started exerting pressure on asia the business of moving migrants happens almost exclusively at night others also tell us of jeeps that cross the desert border in the cover of darkness the trucks shown here were full of workers from there since spring 2017 algeria has been extraditing huge numbers of migrants who had previously spent years earning a living in algeria back in tunisia. Yemen and especially if its a tense situation in algeria 6 or 7 months ago they started to arrest and throw out all the black people they could find. Were not criminals we just trade but willing when a situation has eased ill return. There were only citizens from the share in the truck convoy headed south it seems those who come from elsewhere from senegal cameroon or ghana must walk there a video shot with mobile phones documenting this according to reports 13000 africans were deposited at the border last year its a 12 kilometer walk from the border to asthma. And to a u. N. Refugee tent financed by the Italian Interior Ministry from here the expulse get loaded onto trucks and deported back to their home countries. The journey through nisha is 1400 kilometers. We followed the convoy. Avenues for hit by a sandstorm fitocracy 3 hours to cover 100 kilometers at dusk we reached the couple of. Is the 2nd poorest country in the world with a per capita income of just 27. 00 euros 80 per month women give birth to an average of 7 children giving these year the worlds highest birth rate of unemployment is immense and now new shit is supposed to stop migrants who want to go north with the help of 1000000000 euros the e. U. Is to provide an aid through 2020. Interior minister mohammad is proud of the cooperation. That. Right now there is no state in libya. There is any fact currently the border to europe. A lot of us have you won the fight against clan to start migration securely. You cant win this fight for good. But weve had a lot of success much more than you can imagine. Critics like human rights activists most of chiang gary take a different view of the situation and that is that news for some years now has government has been acting as the police force of the European Union in the fight against what the e. U. Calls illegal migration in the us will allow this to be she aim is to prevent people from traveling to the north to the areas beyond i got there as well and thats the policy of museums government so i set up with 2 things here. Doctors without borders and hide me go in a mobile clinic to care for people affected by this policy there are tens of thousands of them. Referred to this is migrants have been criminalized here its become increasingly difficult they can no longer move freely have no status and no access to health care that is why we are helping them. The report of a. Typical symptoms include exhaustion depression and open wounds these men were also being returned to their homelands that were waiting for transport haitian and had already been on the road for a month. We dont know she said look it was terrible in algeria they sold us in a border town they were violent some of us were killed. Beat us until we called home and organized money. We didnt have any and he said when are you going to i think the day i did what i think maybe you know you told her she was very very happy because it was really good because i came over so many friends with our lord i feel like before i will be just i dont know what ill do in my home country ill be on my own but in rio funs no accommodation itll just be more difficult. To do. The migrants told us it is acting like europes belts and affecting even those who were never trying to go to europe. Or votes because for my rhythm or what were finding is that migration flows are mainly horizontal in other words between individual west african countries or even within a given country before all the flux of those headed for europe is the minority are all very strong or often over. There used to have open borders for people from all over west africa. The country belongs to the Economic Community of West African States or eco as a free trade zone in which some states even share a common currency now all the e. U. Is deal with is severely restricting cross border trade and Free Movement of workers. The consequences of which can be seen clearly in places like the capitals bus station. New because a use of hardly sells any tickets to the north anymore. Theres been a change the migrants who used to come from other countries are no longer here. They are living in hiding. We met a 19 year old senegalese who wanted to go to algeria to work he asked us not to film his face. My older brother was in libya then they sent him back when you return the money situation is where everything is very difficult. Back so i have to go now he said dont go to libya trial period. When we met the man from senegal he told us he had been hiding in the shack together with the goat for a year because the government has tightened the migration of those the Bus Companies no longer want to transport him so he found a different way we called a truck driver who had agreed to transport the senegalese men hidden between goods to the algerian border. Charging 1000. 00 euros at the checkpoint when a motorcyclist gets 10 euros to drive the migrants around the controls. The customers get back in the truck we have one to 3 customers pajoy me. We left the capital and began our trip to agadez. Anyone heading to algeria must pass through here joining the rainy season rivers overflowing their banks and roads become barely passable. We were slowly guided through. I could day is the hub for migrants on their way to algeria and libya for decades local twa nomads and illegal and good living here leading people through the desert once they used to be mainly tourists then it was african migrants. But now the twa are regarded as criminal people smugglers many are unemployed. This work brings un credible sums of money lives and i look at them and the government wants to compensate us with 1500 or 2500 euro. Missiles and couple that sum isnt enough to give the young people the courage to start this job. This is what this man was the head of the agadez de akubra to libya until the government confiscated his cars i dont know a lawyer knowledge on those who used to have cars dont have them anymore those who used to have 2 wives dont have a single one anymore weve lost everything all our belongings. Was the e. U. Has promised 2500. 00 euros to each person affected by the crackdown on the migration market allegedly only 300. 00 have received compensation and the official list of recipients seems problematic illegal because he dismissed as completely useless im discovering more and more names here that have nothing to do with that im ok to day as a student you know even a more morrow has nothing to do with it thats the younger brother of our sultan he doesnt work that way the men have asked the mayor for a meeting about the list but their requests have gone unanswered some say their frustration could escalate. If you paid double to see this it would be my message to the European Union and its partner the government of nigeria you must find a solution for us otherwise only god knows what will happen south 6 of us if i separate with no other viable employment options migration through the desert continues here sticks will being distributed for the passengers to hold on to as the jeeps raced through the desert. The men told us that they work regularly in libya. And what else can i do im paul and a man mustnt be idle i have 3 wives and 6 children are my supposed to feed them ive been going to libya regularly since 2012. I remember for found nothing and returned now im trying again. The e. U. Is willing to commit both money and political influence to stop migrants from coming into europe and to keep africans in africa in the past 6000 people per week started the journey to the north today there are 600 this might look like an early success but the price is high there are thousands who can no longer earn a living frustrated nomads who may revolt and an entire region with Free Movement has been restricted. In their. And during the conflict so flies in populous the flying in venezuela hong kong protests rocks a blanket. This is a unique use fly from berlin chinas military breaks its silence on the hong kong protests in whats being called a thinly veiled warning the army would lease is a propaganda video of a grill of armed troops telling a protest could thinking be considering whether to send in the military for a revolt also coming up germany takes flak from the us how for foreign minister heikal mouse refuses to for class from washington to join in Naval Missions of both to security to the persian gulf as tensions between iran and the west broke and he was democratic president ial hopefuls face off in a 2nd debate on a joe biden comes under attack from all sides on a number of issues including his position on women but he fights back thanks i support a womans right to choose i support is a constitutional right. And it was the single biggest act of resistance in occupied europe during world war 2 the warsaw uprising. 75 years ago congress fighters started an attack to try and drive the nazis out of poland it did not and well today the country is honoring their sacrifice. Im sorry kelly welcome to the program the head of the chinese army in hong kong has condemned the prodemocracy protests in the territory chand out young says that unrest should not be tolerated stoking fears of intervention the army has also released this propaganda video to commemorate its 92nd anniversary it shows a military drill of armed troops quelling protests now recent demonstrations have seen violent clashes between protesters and police with tear gas and rubber bullets being fired protesters have been on the streets of hong kong for months after the government put forth a controversial extradition bill. While china has an estimated 8000 troops stationed in the Hong Kong Garrison part of the wider Peoples Liberation army or p l a china has maintained that the hong kong heiress and the former colony was returned back to the country back in 1907 its presence has seen as mostly symbolic despite it being a combat ready force the garrison describes its role as safeguarding the sovereignty unity and territorial integrity of hong kong its chief major of the general who we mentioned earlier took over in april. So lets take a look at what the head of the Chinese Military in hong kong said now he made the following statement he said recently there have been a series of extremely violent incidents happening in hong kong this has damaged the prosperity and the stability of the city and challenge to the rule of law and social order this should not be tolerated and he added we express our strong condemnation. Lets get more on this story now were joined here in the studio by date of used china policy analyst Clifford Coonan so we heard it there essentially the military commander there in hong kong saying that unrest in the territory should not be tolerated this is a threat isnt it i think so i mean nothing is said by accident in these situations and i think you have to do a certain amount of interpretation in the absence of of very public debate. But i think theres no theres no doubt here that this is a clear message as you mentioned its a symbolic garson but its a pretty powerful symbol a 1000 troops and even though they kept a very very low profile its always had that element of threat there but in addition to you know the words that have been used weve also seen this video i mean this highly produced clearly intimidating video showing this training of armed troops quelling a protest in a place that quite frankly looks like hong kong what is the goal there you know i think even down to the color of the taxis in the video would show that the line towel and color taxis and everything is in companies which is also the language the chinese spoken in hong kong theres a very definite message here during the protests weve seen a lot of tear gas and you see sponge sponge grenades and weve seen rubber bullets but but its still been fairly low key standard onto riot equipment but in these videos we can see machine guns we can see heavily armored. Troops and its more like a war zone there you know climbing up walls and using equipment its its like a scene from the old warrior movie which was very popular in china a couple years ago which showed about the strength of the of the Peoples Liberation army as the Chinese Military is known so the message is very very threatening i think and this and one of the worries is that you know there is the potential here that we could see you know another Tiananmen Square style situation in hong kong with the military brutally suppressing these these prodemocracy activists. I have been on the streets recently is that a plausible scenario do you think are those valid concerns i think given that were 30 years its 30 years since john a man and we had the big we had the big events to mark the anniversary. Obviously outside china i think its always at the forefront of peoples minds weve seen since extreme crackdowns over the years i mean ive seen the Chinese Military action against them against weavers and engine jiang and then also in tibet in areas so we know what can be done but at the same time both of those while they were serious were very much crowd control rather than the you sort of extreme situation that we saw in tiananmen so in this year given 70 years since the foundation of the peoples republic of china when the government wants everything to be kept just so and to show a powerful and patriotic image i think theyre unlikely to do anything that would cause too much instability at the same time they need to keep things running smoothly in hong kong for the very same reason so who knows its a very delicate balance and at a very tense time especially in Hong Kong Clifford could and to china policy analyst thank you. And lets get a quick check now of some other stories making news around the world in yemen dozens of people are dead after 2 separate bomb attacks struck the southern part of it in one targeted a military parade while the other hit a Police Station in is where yemen saudi backed government is based who the rebels linked to iran have claimed responsibility for the attack on the parade. U. S. Officials have told American Media outlets that homes of bin ladin the son of slain al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in a military airstrike on that was considered to be the successor to lead the terrorist group and had a 1000000. 00 bounty on his head all the white house and the pentagon declined to confirm those reports and the United States has imposed sanctions on irans foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif the move comes amid escalating tension between the 2 countries after attacks on oil tankers in the persian gulf the sanctions will freeze any u. S. Assets and limit the reste travel abilities or president Hassan Rouhani called the move quote childish and said the u. S. Was scared of syria. The u. S. Ambassador to germany has criticized Angela Merkels government for refusing to join a Naval Mission in the gulf richard again al has said that america has sacrificed a lot to help germany remain part of the west germany is the biggest economic power in europe the success brings global responsibilities he says well not Germanys Foreign Ministry has rejected that request saying that priority should be given to diplomatic efforts and to deescalating the situation of the lists. From there was our of the German Government will not participate in the si mission proposed and planned by the United States i league we are in close agreement with our French Partners in this regard we think a strategy of maximum pressure is wrong we do not want to military escalation we will continue to work with diplomacy to promote to certain. Lets get more on this story were joined by g. W. Security correspondent christiane trip so i mean we heard it there the United States wants germany support in securing shipping in the gulf germanys foreign minister essentially saying no last word on the matter probably but with and its definitely a spotlight on how the drum Coalition Government these days is working mr maass the foreign minister we just heard is a social democrat and his party the s. P. D. In general is very reluctant when it comes to sending forces abroad military missions like the one pushed forward now by the u. S. Highly unpopular and the drum government and the party of the foreign minister yesterday is performing badly in the poll in the polls for months now so this is german politics this is the background one has to analyze to understand why such a clear no comes from the Foreign Ministry the ministry of defense takes a different position its led by a high profile c. D. U. Politician and we felt we could listen directly to what a great come conboy has to say. We are considering this request in close consultation with the United Kingdom and france. And we are doing this with particular consideration of our political and diplomatic goals and from this overall assessment a decision will be made. So quite confusing one coming at minister going that way the other obvious lead to another direction so one no one could ask what is the chancellor saying but until a model is not in berlin these days shes on her annual leave of service here in berlin take it for granted that the chancellor is supporting the stance of the social democrats simply to keep a Coalition Life and that means no drum participation in such a mission and in the meantime we have to mention that last week there was also a call from. The u. K. This is of course before Boris Johnson took office as Prime Minister the u. K. Sensually proposing a European Naval mission to the gulf war where could germany stand on such a mission i think under a year of paean flak germany would probably find a row with the have been similar naval european let missions in the past one of them off the coast of east africa quite successful one and germany had in its vessels in that for 2 if you look at the german navy these days there are many many vessels undergoing repair or overhauling so its quite doubtful that germany really will be able to send ships into such a nation theres some speculation here in berlin that germany might do the recriminations flights for such a European Mission if it should be mandated but this for sure would take some weeks and of course it has been mentioned that all of this is happening against the backdrop of increased tensions in the region fears of escalation we at we have to mention germanys foreign minister essentially saying that those tensions should be resolved through diplomacy just fill us in on how thats working out well germany together with france and the u. K. One has to stress here that the european powers want to keep the nuclear deal with iran a life and thats why germany doesnt step into such a military mission jim is afraid that this might easily convert into a wall no one wants and germany is still the drum government still wants to know to what end the u. S. Is putting its maximum pressure on to iran the drum stance is as we just heard the escalation and then please lets negotiate the nuclear do you need obvious security correspondent thank you. And the United States democratic president ial hopefuls have again class to the televised debate as the Party Decides who will take on donald trump in the 2020 election candidates just agree on a wide range of issues from immigration and climate to health care 10 potential candidates lined up but all eyes were on former Vice President joe biden and his main rival California Senator carol harris. And joe biden had seen it coming come on a harris renewed her attack on the Democratic Front runner in the 2nd round of t. V. Debates. But this time the former Vice President was prepared and went on the offensive to the senator said several plans to the floor and that any time someone tells you to get something good in 10 years you should wonder why it takes 10 years if you notice is no talk about the fact that the plan in 10 years will cost 3. 00 trillion dollars if you will lose your employer based insurance and in fact you know this is the single most important issue since in the poll he drew a stinging response. So i think that you should really think about what youre saying but be reflective and understand that the people of america want access to health care and do not want cost to be their barrier to getting back with the higher deportation rates resume if youre a president absolutely not number one other candidates joined in on the attack and even the crowd got involved to criticize bidens track record on immigration. I never heard him talk about any of this when he was the secretary. Please be respectful when his parents like or in the crowd. Biden did not get all of the attention the democrats are divided between centrists and progressives and the battle for the party soul will determine who will face off with trump in the 2020 elections. Many democrat voters are in favor of a lurch to the left. I think the time for matter is he has passed and as we heard yesterday high republicans are going to say that democrats are crazy ad socialists whether they come with centrist or like this policy is so now the opportunity to push the partys policies the democrats really want but in their desire to evict trump from the white house voters might be focusing too much on the incumbent. First of all the president is a racist i think the biggest challenge is whether or not you want to position yourself as a person who can win the vote or a person who can defeat trump and it sounds like the same thing but its not a joining if you will right now who are voting for democrats theyre looking for candidates who came beach from and that doesnt mean that theyre looking at the qualifications or even their skills that are even their issues. In a contest where personality tops politics front runner biden still holds many cards. Get more now were joined here by boris foreman political scientist at bard college in berlin so i mean we heard that there are did we see anyone who could potentially defeat trump. Well in a political system as divided and polarized as the us where not just the 2 parties are divided but the parties within themselves are divided its difficult to tell i guess different electrodes well see very Different Things in those in those debates also i think the results of these debates are very volatile in 2 weeks time nobody will remember exactly how one of the candidates performed but were seeing the field closing in on fewer candidates at least and of course you know it currently is a very polarized nation so i mean what would a candidate have to offer to the public in order to even stand a chance in 2020 thats exactly the split that we see reflected in the Democratic Party the answer isnt clear some say we need someone who can definitely go to the back to the status quo before trump there would be biden a moderate candidate others say well theres a reason for trump being elected which is which comes from true economic grievances social grievances and they need to be addressed and the would be the more progressive candidates so the answer is not all clear and even though the number of candidates that might have a real chance to run and campaign for the presidency is is is reducing this rift is still being maintained top of those 11 more about the number because i mean this is the 2nd round of debates and there were too many there are too many people out there on one stage at this point too many people in the running how is that impacting the race so far well it can oftentimes its said to have helped trump become the president in the republican context where. A couple of president ial elections ago there were also too many candidates which which often helps more radical positions but its what were seeing is that in september the next debates will already have reduced by a lot the number of candidates we have 20 candidates right now only 6 or 7 are fulfilling the requirements of the. If the Democratic Party to to actually show up at the next debate so i think in september to we will already be clear that there are 66 candidates that have a viable chance could you think will still be standing worth more in the centers for sure Barden Harris due to jake and or work are the ones that are fulfilling the criteria as of now but i mean the look can still change i think the deadline is august 28th for them to pass this test how many donors they have and how much the whole high they rank in the polls but i think this is very much the kind of those were looking at are swarming political scientist at bard college here in berlin thank you thanks. Now the governor of the u. S. Territory puerto rico ricardo has 2 to resign tomorrow following massive protest as many as 500000 people have taken to the streets in recent weeks protesters are angry about corruption mismanagement of the economy and the response to a recent hurricane the final straw appears to have been a leaked chat which was laced with obscenity is about women gay people and victims of the hurricane. Center phenomena went to puerto rico to meet some of those who have been pushing for the government to go. He is well known for his hard hitting political and. One of the artists who have conspired to approach just in puerto rico he says he is called to be a part of the. Act with this we want to celebrate the fact that we kicked the Government Office in only 12 days but i also want to motivate people to continue to fight and to protest look how many came here today. Were he words on his lyrics lyrics that have earned him a reputation as a verse a title artist p. J. Since well says he writes about whats happening and what affects him right now its political crisis and the anger of the people caused by a Corruption Scandal and text message just in which. Disparaged ordinary citizens as well as political. Look at all the messages he made far. When they came he made fun of. Community he did so many things wrong and it was very easy for everybody to so to like get the message this guys wrong hes got to get out one of the people targeted by the governor was almost. He told me he was angry but not surprised to find his name in the leaked text message just because hes always been critical of the administration but he didnt anticipate the consequences. Im very proud of what happened and resupplies by the extent of a civil commitment and here today to recurse for the most part or all the passive country. My your me we do not take to the streets easily. And if we do the protests are small and you know we see the same people and groups you know me my persona. But also worry thats real change for so many people. Rican seem to feel since gov will say you and no instead he will step down thats why there are still protests taking place a new governor will soon be moving into this mention right behind me but the political crisis in puerto rico is far from over in the streets of san juan protestants say they want to continue their fight and they are hopeful that so no later they will get their leaders they believe they deserve. From someone who won we drive solve. The protests attracted ordinary people from all over the island people like omar so to ford to new york and hes a wife. The couple is still amazed by the size of the crowds and their unity people a walk with him going to do they more. Than explanations ball i dont think i dont think we are ready for example that when the gorn or a warning from either party but people are are more aware of the situation they argue about politics at their Kitchen Table the governor successor and what should happen next and the posse ride out says she didnt pay much attention to politics but to protest really touched her heart. Now to poland where events are taking place today to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the warsaw uprising one of the biggest acts of resistance of the 2nd world war after nearly 5 years of nazi occupation armed polish troops made a last stand to liberate warsaw they fought against the better equipped German Forces for more than 2 months. But lacking soviet support they were ultimately forced to surrender tens of thousands of fighters on both sides were killed as well as hundreds of thousands of civilians many massacred by German Forces during house to house combat now 75 years on many still remember the horrors of the uprising including those who took part in it. Leisure was one of the resistance fighters who wanted to liberate warsaw from the nazis in 1944 at the age of 13 he joined the grey ranks of paramilitary polish scouting association he was 15 when the revolt began he carried messages back and forth between the combat units and learnt what war means. The 1st to have a soul and that on the floor of the building i lived. I happened to be on the other side of the street just. So i lost my apartment. The lost generation who have contact with those who were part of the uprising. Legit through kosky is one of 1500 living veterans 50000 people fought in the uprising still regrets that neither the russians nor the western allies came to the aid of the resistance fighters but what he does not regret was his decision to join the fight. A quick reminder now the top stories that were following for you here on t w news the Chinese Military has released a propaganda video showing a drill of arms troops putting down a protest it is being seen as a thinly veiled warning to prodemocracy demonstrators and hong kong it also coincides with the comments by the head of the Chinese Military that violence in hong kong will be tolerated. Its no secret that if youre of a populist and nationalist parties are gearing up to try and make a splash at the coming european elections but whos helping them we are nationalists. So we leave all our members. All in with their own. Vision and principle in respect of what this except the euro used comfortable phrases like its a club meant for the exchange of ideas from nationalist populist movements across youre talking strategy for bannon its far more combative and he called it gumming up the e. U. Parliament in other words blocking your purpose is essentially destructive and no its youre not building an army or iow youre. We are reinforcing and rebuilding the preeminence of national what is he say he said the beating heart of the globalist project is in brussels if i drive the stake through the valley the whole thing will start to dissipate well pretty selfimportant play. If we we analyze the situation in the sense that the system like the us ultimately ends up imperialism a kind of imperialism i have confidence that the forces of democracy of real democrats in europe will be stronger than these autocrats and i hope they will because indeed there is a rise of populism in europe doesnt look like it doesnt well wait for the results of the 21000 elections and then well talk i know you did better in bavaria and youve done a little better in your seat but but theyre very strong and theyre very powerful and we will see whether they keep getting strengths and i doubt it well see its the back seat particularly noticeable i know you said it in showing 2013 if youre black go back and i want to stoney and to be a white country these were your words into. A Television Talk show here. We were roundly condemned by other politicians including the Human Rights Group here in parliament 80 percent of stern and we had a there was apologists own 80 percent of his tone and agreed with that statement so take it as it is conveyed to present the statement you would have been you would have won the election you know win the elections you. Did very well but i want to about this this and this visit. This is what. He says. We will get to the racism issue what do you want the with all this crackdown on migrants you want to preserve your identity and son we want to preserve the italian and european identity we want to why its all nationalist parties. Across europe do you want to see more White Nationalist panties pushing that idea be dented and its not a matter of White Nationalist parties believe hes not a White Nationalist party lorenzos from turn our cities to an identity conception of politics awaking all across europe. Means white house and that thats why i said we are meeting was to protect the european identity the european christina roots for example the european culture detail and culture but it is you that is giving to this identity tyrion project the iraqis. The blow up and thats not the meaning in any way that the league and our representatives are doing so we want to protect the Cultural Roots the christian roots of europe its not hard to work out because you go around saying muslims equal threat was equal threat over and over and that not only analog some people are going to react badly and some people are going to turn violent we want to treat the german germination they dont even the European Union but were talking about germany here we dont want to have that a Muslim Country we accept muslims there are lots of muslims who are well integrated into our society who take place no problem everythings fine but what we do not want to accept is that islam is starting to have an impact on our social life and our public life on our you know. Addressing the point i wanted to make about about this idea that muslims are a threat to germany. Muslims are spread to juice this is for example something what were were getting from the Jewish Community the Jewish Community isnt working in the new world lets face it the situation in venezuela could hardly be more complex the United States along with some 2 dozen countries is backing the new interim leader one way though russia and China Support incumbents ridiculous. Now we have france. Spain germany and britain who have recognized the new interim leader as president how long can you go on with this people are defecting from the Administration One of your colleagues venezuela ambassador to iraq to affected accusing maduro of violating the constitution that is his right on air force general near force military attaches in washington you know military attache washington has gone how long can you hold dont you doesnt depend on that i mean a president doesnt hold or doesnt hold on because of Foreign Countries ask them or like them or not hes impoverished the country and hes subject to the massive repression well i think the name here is to have the transition that is taking place continue to take place peacefully we met with the. We met with. One guy goes representative the new ambassador to the United States and one guy i go is the president of venezuela at the present time we believe strongly that the morning to you we believe strongly that the. That the venezuelan people should be commended for the way that theyve handled this they used the rule of law to rep to remove. Mr maduro is still there hes still there senator could you would you mind letting me finish my sentence as plain as the International Community is going to want my dogs recognition is that i mean i got it from inside the country that you know he absolutely does have it from inside the country said people on the streets thats not the same thing isnt what it what do you expect that people on the streets is power people on the streets its love. People on the streets is support people on the streets as an expression and it can come and go and the other the power and fertilizer future and it can come and go well the people that are supporting. The dural are the rogues gallery in the world including the iranians. The the russians the North Koreans pull frosting on mccain you know is it worse is the sense that you dont think this is a stalemated situation its not now all the countries that are liberal democracies that have the rule of law recognize our constitution and they recognize the legitimacy of one why they are that we are in a situation where a drug cartel has taken all the levers of power by the way doesnt mean youre going to succeed does it doesnt mean youre going to seize or you die trying we have no option but to fight for our people i will fight for my people until i draw my last breath how long do you think president maduro can hold on now 6 years i hope. Weeks of mass protest in hong kong show no sign of coming to an end but how long will beijing the put up with you more than a few weeks ago a few days ago that if things got worse the chinese army might consider taking to the streets you said when theres trouble in hong kong when things turn sour theres violence in our history our fear is that if the police are now able to control what is happening here theres a remote risk the chinese army would get involved how remote is that risk if its so well known of the why why did you why did you mention no i hope you will never happen why did you mention if it was a remote risk trying to frighten people you know its a fact everybody understand except you you dont understand it. Hong kong is a place where it is being operating is operating under the one country 2 systems it is a not very successfully is it calm is a huge political compromise we are part of china under the basic law china has a responsibility to ensure that hong kong is stable everybody who is doing business here want to see hong kong to be stable all right so yes under the basic law there is provision for the the beijing government to interfere if nobody hoped that it would happen im trying to say that we are trying to of avoid this happening so im not insane in fear into people im simply reflecting what is stated in the basic law and what is the political reality of the situation of course we created size the Hong Kong Government especially the council tried to establish a law which your hong kong residents disagree and that doesnt trust so that we show you the latest kerry lasher that are you the chief executive you blame the carrier kerry lam the chief exec shes beijings appointing russian history she is the appointee even socalled elected by some hong kong representation is still there wise why hasnt she was what ask hong kong people as Common People is there a democracy in syria system we need we in hong kong need to gain the trust and confidence of beijing so that they can allow us the freedom of political reform what about the other way round what about beijings duty to earn the trust of people in hong kong once both ways where they have managed you know that 5000 runs both ways only 2 years they have managed its only thats unfair and then been doing of the most of try to win you know holes all show that people do not of the majority of people still do not identify something i dont face all the beijing government of National Guard would have had work on them. Everybody would come to work harder you think the people of hong kong should play nice to their masters in beijing i might throw the crumbs i do use only to use over the words of the words i use is that we should communicate with each other and wish to instill confidence to each other thats what im saying why china is not using force to press down the demonstration why they compromise why because they seek opportunity to prove they can change. This week conflict zone is that the annual security conference in munich i mean plenty of recriminations and bad blood between europe and washington are you trying to tell me that europe has lived up to its commitments under nato is that what youre trying to tell me because believe me there is no belief or that on anybodys part that some of the european nations are not living up to their commitments and indeed look ive done this for 10 years ive come over here and tried to talk the nato countries into living up to their agreements a padded us on the head and said all well were on track to try to do this or try to do that let me put it bluntly the problem is that many Member States dont trust donald trump do that his commitment to nato why should they i mean hes done everything he could to undermine trust that hes 100 percent behind you know i havent seen that clearly donald trump has shaken things up theres no question about it hes gotten off a bit more than that is not my only allies to sit up and take notice because he was very concerned about the lack. Of fair burden sharing inside the alliance and he wanted allies to pay more in his inimitable way he got everybody to Pay Attention to the necessity of putting more money into their Defense Budgets chancellor Angela Merkel said last year that there were good reasons to continue fighting for the transatlantic relationship but we had it she had it we cant count on it anymore. Well i im sorry she feels like that we dont feel like that you know the concept representatives they had so little confidence in chumps intentions toward nato that last year they had to pass a law with bipartisan support stating that its u. S. Policy to remain a member of nato predicating funs to be used to withdraw from the alliance so little confidence do they have in the president s commitment to nato her a i saw that as a great expression in washington of bipartisan support for nato and i saw it when we were there 10 days ago for the 70th anniversary nato is well supported across both sides of the aisle thats a great thing why why are you going off isaac and not by the president there are 200. 00 countries in the world right the vast majority of them believe the proc obamas brand of leadership was far better than either george bush is or down from you see the curve go like this under obama and then like this under trump and europe and asia and latin america and africa and so we can talk about israel where president obama had very sharp differences with a right wing government led by Bibi Netanyahu but i dont think that it wasnt just it wasnt just the sharp differences there were deep contradictions in the middle east policy that well we i mean you have a whole belief in which you voted against them u. S. President to enter an israel this was rooted largely in the iran Nuclear Agreement and if we had to do it over again if the price of having a better relationship with israel was not having iran Nuclear Agreement and potentially going to war with iran that was not a price that we were going to pay all the latest polls show the french germans the british now regard the us as a greater danger to their interests than china would you regard as your prime danger how much blame do you think washington should take for that. Well. Sometimes events drive us in a direction that we shouldnt be driven. We. We dont feel the same way about our european. Friends or were more like kerry you know there are a lot of recriminations these days to get over iran. In regard to the round deal that europe continues to abide by surely one that you get out of well we didnt walk out of it the president states at that time barack obama entered into that agreement. Over the objection of a lot of us it did not have the things in it that it needed to have and it was very weak it did indeed address one issue but i viewed the iran. Deal as a deal to try to discipline a bad boy in the classroom that was doing 5 bad things they addressed one of them but theyre interested a big one did they dress one of them a big one they have dressed one of them ben rhodes in the short time that we have left lets look ahead to the next president ial election next year. What kind of Democratic Party do you think is going to be capable of beating donald trump with his massive following his dominance of the airwaves is dominance of social media which proved so devastating in the last president ial election what kind of democratic vote is going to be able to i think out there on the current but the mass of following is 40 percent he is the most unpopular us president to run for reelection in my life he sets the news agenda is a very well then doesnt they dominate is that it takes a look at what they do have to live with the world as it is or doesnt check the Democratic Party just routed down from the Republican Party and go from weve won 40 seats in the house yeah and won by the largest popular vote margin in the history of Midterm Election the largest Democratic Victory in the house since watergate. Voters in the European Parliament elections have shaken out the confidence politics turning away from the major power. Clubs that have dominated brussels in recent years and boosting the smaller groupings the greens the liberals and the far right apparently european voters werent so keen on the status quo in the more do you accept a share of the blame for that for the 1st Voter Participation has been very very high historically 51 percent more or less in medium in in all of europe but they dont like the status quo and i came out to say that but this is a general crowd is a legitimacy to european institutions shows that people start to understand how relevant to European Union is and that it really affects their daily life and they future their one mark and ability they want more transparency i think they will ask much more participation for whoever is going around europe in the future thats a nice way of spinning it isnt it the top jobs were carved up in the kind of backroom stitch up that people were told wasnt going to happen again. And it did it did despite all these promises why you let the voters than not i mean 1st of all why do you speak about the backroom deal i mean it was so transparent. And all the process of the names in the game i think it was very very true not at all into the Outgoing Commission president he called it not very transparent quite an indictment from john burns that wasnt its true but i dont have to agree with him on this point i think its not the best process but its the pros at this is right in the treaties people are losing faith in the heres the paradox isnt it highest level of support for membership since 983. 00 for more than half the people of europe think he is likely to collapse within a generation all the while for the 1st breath to see also the legacy is that our society is out of the chaos and implosion that unfortunately we have seen in the u. K. Has been a vaccination rather than infection for the rest of europe we have seen so you should be stronger so as a result of that we have seen if i can finish my sentence to europe barometric kountry of to count tree your planning and popularity has increased even him hungary with a few exceptions of Czech Republic and we have seen one after the extreme right Political Parties dropping the agenda of leaving the European Union and leaving the euro why all the doubts about whether the e. U. Can actually Stay Together i mean spains foreign minister use a barrel was asked in the interview if it was so fragile if europe was so fragile it could break up his comment was honestly yes honestly yes yes a europe has always been growing start out of big crisis we were born out of the ashes of world war 2. And the reality is that its one of the best places in the world to live we never had it so good in europe but voters are very disappointed very disappointed and it was supposed to be about them you were seeing the turnout go down in every single election since the european elections started and this was the big push to rope more people in because they were going to be listened to and they werent yes i mean the crowd its a big this is a big failure whichever way you like to spin it but it is a big factor i mean the publication of democracy Representative Democracy is what im talking about but the participation in the european elections has been raised also because of the better understanding of the citizens about the need of the because the expectation they might actually be listened to thats why they voted they were told it is going to be different lets just go back to europe in the new Political Landscape after the european elections if he is joining the. Identity and Democracy Group which is going to be the 5th Largest Group in the European Parliament not the 3rd largest which is what you were in for your party promises to be a thorn in the flesh of the stuff what does that mean shes going to block and disrupt create trouble you know what were trying to get out is the message that were in favor of the European Union and it has been set up by the Founding Fathers of the your opinion were against the effortless the union we want to keep the server serenity of the nation states what we think is that democracy only functions within a nation state and we want to Work Together where it is necessary to do so but we do not want to move towards ever closer you know extreme right populist did not have. The earthquake they expected to have been actually have an earthquake or scandals and the liberal liberal conservative forces are stronger than previously the greens advanced the socialist collapsed the extreme left lost almost 50 seats 5 has ago there was no far right at all was there so you hold the door open for them during the last 5 years i think this is not the time for blame game this is the time to stand for the truth isnt it time to look at what happened the achievements of the last 5 years back to where each passing day its come to mean aboard this United Kingdom and the more damaged weaker government the reason i was a very minor heart was never in leaving you why so it is a kind of damage limitation exercise so you say that she said she was quite concerned to deliver back that she promised on innumerable occasions to deliver bread but she failed and in the end im afraid well have to face well sure the party lost confidence and so did the house of commons but there was a lot of ignorance on on belief side wasnt that i mean even among some of the most visible campaigners like Boris Johnson for instance when he was questioned on t. V. Last september turned out he didnt know that switzerland was in the Single Market and refused to accept it when he was told that was the quote im not responsible for what boris is the we voted to let your living breaks it and you hear this sort of nonsense come out why dont you say this is wrong or british people deserve the referendum result to be implemented it is of the true you told them something they deserve and they dont deserve a lot of m. P. s who say they accept the referendum results and they are campaigning against it you happy that Boris Johnson being ordered to appear in court over claims that he lied during the reverend well over this 350000000 pounds a week to be well the person hes done by his is an absolute or a minor and actually if its not matter well yes of course it why it doesnt have a bearing on the. Mary to. Well it does because clearly hes doing it from a particular perspective if the i aim is to damage boris it will have precisely the opposite effect you know i do advise our European Partners not to overplay their hand what you negotiator seem to obsess about is that britain must appear to lose from this absolutely not i mean you have made it clear that leave leaving the e. U. Is a mistake and that should become a selffulfilling prophecy now now britain has to lose its loses britain has to lose i mean you played the part but that again is a lunacy i mean. No we just say that membership of the European Union has benefits and of course if youre not member you dont enjoy those benefits its not punishment it just statement of fact the is the largest Trading Group in the world they hold all the cards its their club that youre leaving they will decide what rules apply should you wish to take advantage of some of the. Privileges on offer. With that club i think but i thought we had in our manifesto 18 months or so ago it was that we wanted to create a comprehensive trading arrangement with them and they have agreed on those have come under that agreement those would be japan id be quite happy just to replicate the terms of that youve been saying that no deal is increasingly attractive but thats not what you and your folk leave colleagues promised the country wants it time and again they promised great deals with the you and everyone else and said they just fall into britain slap to the back turned out to be in the student well. I have to confess that i think its in the European Unions interests to strike a sensible free trade deal with the United Kingdom. And whether we make that agreement before we leave which looks rather unlikely or after we leave i believe that thats what will happen but in the end my point is that were going proclaiming promises were well that the Vote Leave Campaign didnt make promises we were campaigning its your presumption that there will be maybe a crash out without a deal but its not said the deal is on the table in the u. This is going to be in the us live from berlin chinas military breaks its silence on the hong kong protests in what is being called a thinly veiled warning the army when we say propaganda video of a drill of arms troops quelling a protest could beijing be considering whether to send the military for burial. Also coming up the u. S. Democratic president ial hopefuls face off in a 2nd debate back on and joe biden comes under attack from all sides on a number of issues including his position on women but he fights back. To choose i support its a constitutional right. And germany takes flak from the United States after foreign minister heiko mosque refuses a request from washington to join and Mabel Mission to bolster security in the persian gulf as tension between iran and the west grows. Plus it was the single biggest act of resistance in occupied europe during baltimore to the borstar uprising 75 years ago polish fire started an attack to try and drive the nazis out of coal and it did not end well and today the country is honoring their sacrifice. Im sorry kelly welcome to the program the head of the chinese army in hong kong has condemned the prodemocracy protests in the territory to. Doubt shawn said that unrest should not be tolerated stoking fears of intervention the army has also released a propaganda video to commemorate its 92nd anniversary it shows a military drill of armed troops killing protest and recent demonstrations have seen violent clashes between protesters and police with tear gas and rubber bullets being fired protesters have been on the streets of hong kong for months after the government put forth a controversial extradition bill. So lets take a closer look now at the response to those protests by hong kongs military chief he said recently there have been a series of extremely violent incidents happening in hong kong this has damaged the prosperity and the stability of the city and challenge the rule of law and social order this should not be tolerated and we express our strong condemnation. Lets get more on this story now were joined here in the studio by date of used china policy analyst Clifford Coonan so we heard it there essentially the military commander there in hong kong say that unrest in the territory should not be tolerated this is a threat isnt it i think so i mean nothing is said by accident in these situations and i think you have to do a certain amount of interpretation and in the absence of of very public debate. But i think theres no theres no doubt here that this is a clear message as you mentioned its a symbolic garrison but its a pretty powerful symbol a 1000 troops and even though they kept a very very low profile its always had that element of threat there but in addition to you know the words that have been used weve also seen this video i mean this highly produced clearly intimidating video showing this training of armed troops quelling a protest in a place that quite frankly looks like hong kong what is the goal there you know i think even down to the color of the taxis in the video would show that the line towel and color taxis and everything is in companies which is also the language the chinese spoken in hong kong theres a very definite message here during the protests weve seen a lot of tear gas and weve seen sponge sponge grenades and weve seen rubber bullets but but its still been fairly low key standard anti riot equipment but in these videos we can see machine guns we can see heavily armored. Troops and its more like a war zone there you know climbing up walls and using the quitman to its its like a scene from the old warrior movie which was very popular in china a couple years ago which showed about the strength of the Peoples Liberation army as the Chinese Military is known so the message is very very threatening i think and this and one of the worries is that you know there is the potential here that we could see you know another Tiananmen Square style situation in hong kong with the military brutally suppressing these is prodemocracy activists. That have been on the streets recently is that a plausible scenario do you think are those valid concerns i think given that were 30 years its 30 years since john a man and we had the big we had the big events to mark the anniversary. Obviously outside china i think its always at the forefront of peoples minds weve seen since extreme crackdowns over the years i mean ive seen the Chinese Military in action against them against weavers and engine jiang and then also in tibet in areas so we know what can be done but at the same time both of those while they were serious were very much crowd control rather than the sort of extreme situation that we saw in tiananmen so in this year given its 70 years since the foundation of the peoples republic of china when the government wants everything to be kept just so and to show a powerful and patriotic image i think theyre unlikely to do anything that would cause too much instability at the same time they need to keep things running smoothly in hong kong for the very same reason so who knows its a very delicate balance and at a very tense time especially in Hong Kong Clifford could in china policy analyst thank you for. And the United States democratic president ial hopefuls have a good class in a televised debate as the Party Decides who will take on donald trump in the 2020 election candidates disagree on a wide range of issues from immigration and climate to health care 10 potential candidates lined up but all eyes were on former Vice President joe biden and his main rival California Senator campbell heris. Joe biden had seen it coming come on a harris renewed her attack on the Democratic Front runner in the 2nd round of t. V. Debates. But this time the former Vice President was prepared and went on the offensive to the senators had several plans to the floor and any time someone so isnt going to get something good in 10 years you wonder why it takes 10 years if you notice theres no talk about the fact that the plan in 10 years will cost 3. 00 trillion dollars there you will lose your employer based insurance and in fact you know this is the single most important issue facing the poll he drew a stinging response so i think that you should really think about what youre saying but the reflective and understand that the people of america want access to health care and do not want cost to be their barrier to getting back with a higher deportation rates resume if youre a president absolutely not number one other candidates joined in on the attack and even the crowd got involved to criticize bidens track record on immigration many meetings i never heard him talk about any of this when he was the secretary. Please where is michael where is where is michael in the crowd. Biden did not get all of the attention the democrats are divided between centrists and progressives and the battle for the party soul will determine who will face off with trump and the 2020 elections. Many democrat voters are in favor of a lurch to the left. I think the time for matter is he has passed and as we heard yesterday our republicans are going to say that democrats are crazy and i am socialist whether they come with centrist or like this policy is so now the opportunity to push the partys policies the democrats really want. But in their desire to evict trump from the white House Democrats might be focusing too much on the incumbent 1st of all the president is a racist i think the biggest challenge is whether or not you want to position yourself as a person who can win the vote or a person who can defeat trump and it sounds like the same thing but its not a joining of people right now who are voting for democrats theyre looking for candidates who came beachfront and that doesnt mean that theyre looking at the fall of the cage and theyre even their skills that are even their issues. In a contest where personality tops politics front runner biden still holds many cards because the fact lets get more now were joined here by boris foreman political scientist at bard college in berlin so i mean we heard that there are did we see anyone who could potentially defeat trump well in a system as divided and polarized as the u. S. Where not just the 2 parties are divided but the parties within themselves or the web difficult to tell i guess different electrodes will see very Different Things in those in those debates also i think the results of these debates are very bold the tow in 2 weeks time nobody will remember exactly how one of the kind of this perform but were seeing the field closing in on fewer candidates at least and of course you know currently its a very polarized nation so i mean what would a candidate have to offer to the public in order to even stand a chance in 2020 thats exactly the split that we see reflected in the democratic. The answer isnt clear some say we need someone who can definitely go to the back to the status quo before trump there would be biden a moderate candidate others say well theres a reason for trump being elected which is which comes from true economic grievances social grievances and they need to be addressed and the would be the more progressive candidates so the answer is not all clear and even though the number of candidates that might have a real chance to run and campaign for the presidency is is is reducing this rift is still being maintained help us a little bit more about the number because i mean this is the 2nd round to debate me there were too many there too many people out of town wants to catch me at this point too many people in the running how is that impacting the race so far well it can oftentimes its said to have helped trump become the president in the republican context where. A couple of president ial elections ago there were also too many candidates which which often helps more radical positions but its what were seeing is that in september the next debates will already have reduced but a lot the number of candidates we have 20 candidates right now only 6 or 7 are fulfilling the requirements of the of the Democratic Party to to actually show up at the next debate so i think in september that we will already be clear that there are 66 candidates that have a viable chance could you think will still be standing or warren and centers for sure biden harris going to jake and or work are the ones that are fulfilling the question as of now but i mean a lot can still change i think the deadline is august 20th for them to pass this test how many donors they have and how much high they rank in the polls but i think this is very much the kind of this were looking at are spawning political scientist at bard college here in berlin thank you thanks. Lets get a quick check of some other stories making news around the world and yemen dozens of soldiers are dead after who think rebels targeted a military base in the port city of aden the drone and missile attack took place during a military parade 8 in is where yemen saudi backed government is based there who thieves who are supported by iran say that the parade was being used to prepare an attack against them. U. S. Officials have told American Media outlets that hums of bin ladin the son of slain al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in a military airstrike hums it was considered to be the successor to lead the terrorist group and had a 1000000. 00 bounty on his head while the white house in the pentagon declined to confirm the reports and the United States has imposed sanctions on irans foreign minister Mohammad Javad zarif the move comes amid escalating tension between the 2 countries after a tax on oil tankers in the persian gulf the sanctions will freeze any u. Youre watching to be a news still to come on the Program Honoring the failed attempt to drive the nazis out of one of europes biggest countries in world war 2 what to the survivors say today. The 1st u. S. Ambassador to germany has criticized Angela Merkels government for refusing to join a Naval Mission in the gulf Richard Goyder now has said that america has sacrificed a lot to help germany remain part of the west germany is the biggest economic power in europe the success brings global responsibilities he said. Meantime germanys foreign minister has rejected that request saying that priority should be given to diplomatic efforts and to deescalating the situation. From. The German Government will not participate in the si mission proposed and planned by the United States we are in close agreement with our French Partners in this regard we think a strategy of maximum pressure is wrong and we do not want to military escalation we will continue to work with diplomacy more to set lets get more on this story were joined by g. W. Security correspondent christiane trip us so i mean we heard it there the United States wants germany support in securing shipping in the gulf germanys foreign minister essentially saying no last word on the matter probably but with and its definitely a spotlight on how the john Coalition Government these days is working mr moss the foreign minister we just heard is a social democrat and his party the s. P. D. In general is very reluctant when it comes to sending forces abroad military missions like the one pushed forward now by the u. S. Highly unpopular and the john government and the party of the foreign minister yesterday is performing badly in the poll in the polls for months now so this is john politics this is the background one has to analyze to understand why such a clear no comes from the Foreign Ministry the ministry of defense takes a different position its led by a high profile c. D. U. Politician and we felt we could listen directly to what under great come come boy has to say. We are considering this request in close consultation with the United Kingdom and france. And we are doing this with particular consideration of our political and diplomatic goals and from this overall assessment a decision will be made. So quite. If using one coming at minister going that way the other obvious lead to another direction so one no one could ask what is the chancellor saying but uncle americal is not in berlin these days shes on her annual leave of service here in berlin take it for granted that the chancellor is supporting the stance of the social democrats simply to keep a coalition a life and that means no drum participation in such a mission and in the meantime we have to mention that last week there was also a call from the u. K. This is of course before Boris Johnson took office as Prime Minister of the u. K. Sensually proposing a European Naval mission to the gulf war where could germany stand on such a mission i think under your pm flight germany would probably find a row with the have been similar naval european let missions in the past one of them off the coast of east africa quite successful one and germany had in its vessels in that for 2 if you look at the german navy these days there are many many vessels undergoing repair or overhauling so its quite doubtful that germany really will be able to send ships into such a nation theres some speculation here in berlin that germany might do the recriminations flights for such a European Mission if it should be mandatory but this for sure would take some weeks and of course it has to be mentioned that all of this is happening against the backdrop of increased tensions in the region fears of escalation we hat we have to mention germanys foreign minister essentially saying that those tensions should be resolved through diplomacy. Just fill us in on how thats working out well germany together with france and the u. K. One has to stress here the so the european powers wants to keep the nuclear deal with iran a life and thats why germany doesnt step into such a military Mission Germany is afraid that this might easily convert into a wall no one wants and germany is still the drum government still wants to know to what end the u. S. Is putting its maximum pressure on to iran the drum stance is as we just heard the escalation and then please lets negotiate the nuclear do you have security correspondent christiane thank you well the governor of the u. Though while it is not always a good plan but its much much better than it was. Just the world really Getting Better. Global 3000. 00 special reports. Start looking like deeds on digital. Capital. Alone a very warm welcome indeed to focus on europe with me peter craven and europe with its huge opportunity for electricity is increasingly shifting to Renewable Energy sources which in turn means that it needs more and more role materials like coppa electron mobility for instance is unthinkable without it and copper is in growing demand for solar wind and Geothermal Energy systems because of its Excellent Properties as an electrical conduct. All of which is good news for spain with its large copper reserves in the southwestern region of and the lucio bunts 2 decades ago a burst dam at a mine in the area triggered an environmental disaster now activists and go to herders like leo moderato fear history could repeat itself. Now you. Cannot let us goats graze anymore. In the flood plains of sun look at my york its been prohibited for over 20 years. Back then one of spains biggest environmental catastrophes happened in a copper mine just a few kilometers upstream. Theyre all gone favorite or negative i came here and everything was back within a little of the mantle of black mud. Came from up there you know where the mine is. All of this was flooded into the river and then type claim to every oh you thought ok ive gotten way through. April 25th 1980 and i snuck out into the sea and the dam for the collecting basin breaks highly toxic mud a byproduct of copper production floods the valley for up to 60 kilometers threatening to destroy a nature reserve. Cultivation has stopped here ever since and the pasture along the river has become a restricted area. If were going to have it on you know. This homes as far as of course. We live off our fields the cattle is not allowed up there anymore. So we need to buy fatah and confine the animals and i would like about. Now ecologist say the end to lucy and copper region is facing a new threat 60 kilometers to the northwest she daughter other but they are expects the worst. I mean document there i mean unfortunately we have information from experts saying that the dems of the mine in rio tinto on safe he said knowing simply that theres no safety there i mean that everything but bormann. The Open Pit Mine in to be your team is 10 times the size of the one in i think and its run by an international corporation. In seeking to increase production by 50 percent. Were not allowed to film on site so easy dr i but they are shows us the reservoirs. Underneath a solid layer on the surface there is liquid mud. And i want. The water here is a very acidic and theres been contaminated heavily production if the dam spray than a much bigger catastrophe could happen then 20 years ago. In the village next door nobody wants to believe the scenario most families here lived off mining until the factory closed for 15 years mining has restarted 3 years ago and many are happy to just have their jobs back i love you know how my lives have been reinvigorated by the opening of the mine that i grew off a model with all its modern technology how could i not get better and. What can i say if the ecologist simply keep pushing anything and everyone. The mayor defends the mine too she even downplayed the procedural error they occurred during the reopening and its been confirmed by a court. One the best in the whole with such a project one needs to stick to the deadline so that people can present their concerns but this deadline required by law was not met. But no environmental laws were broken its simply a procedural matter i mean they were both of you mean to many thought they were. The end to lucy and Regional Government justifies its decision in the same manner and was not willing to be interviewed. Meanwhile the mind keeps running in the eyes of a college just this is scandalous watching from a feel on the to what it was the citizens went and form sufficiently and hardly had any time to object everyone once of the best technologies could be used for the construction of these was a was as long as a. Its not completely legal the pitch would actually not be allowed to be done. But business is booming copper is increasingly in demand for crisis ridden spain a valuable resource is seen as a chance in life with its contaminated soil mining is supposed to recommit supply. The goat herds downstream have the reservations concerning these developments. Later moreno is happy to see employment return to the region but cannot comprehend how easily International Corporations are allowed to exploit the earth. Air command their own then its money that runs the show and we must subordinate ourselves with that going thats all economy 1st theyre not. In favor of the hour they are going to mean. They are moreno and his colleagues know exactly what theyre talking about. When it comes to safety they say no price is too high. A politician should learn from the disaster and prevent risking a new one. I think you know. Well this is how europe looked 30 years ago the continent was divided down the middle into nato and the warsaw pact west and east germany and of course west indies but then people talk to the streets in a peaceful revolution and in our special summer series marking the 30th anniversary of the fall of the iron curtain the spotlight this week is on germany 2 men who witnessed history unfolding from close up. This is all thats left of the infamous berlin wall some graffiti and neglected grass. These 2 men born in what was then east germany helped to bring it down. Well and yon on the left was extradited to west germany he helped get footage of the east german protests on to west German Television and under protested when doing so was still extremely dangerous but its going to take the fall of the berlin wall was not a gift it was something people achieved the top of the ship and can be proud of that the small challenges we face today are nothing compared to this. Type of activity. But and various rust disagrees fundamentally the legacy photographer documented the radical transformation of east germany his pictures show the effects of germanys rapid reunification and what was effectively east germanys submission to the west. Germany insisted on its own way of doing things most east germans lost their jobs and the country they had lived in vanished. You know the work we lost all faith and everything to do with the east we thought west german milk and sugar was better than our own even their people were superior. Many west germans wanted to profit for example those who judged one of east germanys beauty pageants it was held in life 6 just 2 months after the berlin wall came down as adama. Back then i was shocked by how these human bodies were suddenly being exploited for capitalist game. We need to know looking at these pictures today they seem like an allegory of east germanys demise is a. Default opposition to the ladies got dressed up and gave it everything they had. And listen fat stupid jury seagal just sat there Smoking Cigars and grading them. Everything had begun so will the crowd shouted we are the people. I was. Roland and joyous met on october 9th 1989 at the most decisive rally at the time just one month before the berlin wall came down. You know you better think about this book which was shot by friends risking a lot of. Smuggled cameras into eastern germany my friends took over the secret police and climbed the church tower of it and the army had taken up positions in the side streets backed up by tanks east germany was on the verge of civil war. I was open base and grow some reasonably reports to the front office to the front row. That hadnt been our plan. To begin that the m. Lot no when the protest march started we linked ours as we had seen people do in the movies. We thought thats just what you do but after a while we realized that the police and the army or not intervening they just let us march. Oneself and us in the news to us for the next day footage shot by rolands friends ended up on the west german news it became obvious east germanys days were numbered. And i dont know this well but from reporting from leipsic protests just didnt know foreign reporters could capture this footage 70000 took to the streets and. One of the 1st east german leaders to fall was eric schmidt head of the secret police the. From his headquarters he had overseen a vast Informers Network never would he have imagined that his office would one day be a tourist attraction. He used to store compromising documents on east german leader eric. In the car here. Standing in arish milka school my headquarters makes clear just what great symbolic meaning because we have visitors from 40 Different Countries who admired germany for having toppled the dictatorship and for being this brave it sends a strong signal and creates home. Today roland ian is in charge of east germany the files he shows us the cellar where there are endless rows of them germany was able to salvage most of them making them accessible to former victims of the east german regime. Andreas ross depreciates this former east German Communist Party members informers were not treated with leniency after the fall of the wall. But he thinks other big mistakes were made to this day many east germans feel they are not treated equally and he says it was recognized too late that eastern germany has a problem with right wing extremism and xenophobia. To use its use of the us for that 1st we chanted we are the people and. We are one people which is still acceptable but when this change into the belief that foreigners should leave germany something definitely went wrong. Ok. The berlin wall came down 30 years ago but to this day the country still isnt truly united that will take more than one generation. And we go to croatia now where all 4 of his are being accused of turning a blind eye to socalled push backs of migrants and Asylum Seekers trying to get into the e. U. Country from neighboring bosnia and theres growing evidence of people who do manage to cross the border at places like velika credit a simply being dumped back in bosnia often violently all of which is illegal for an e. U. Member states so to find out more were joined currently no rubella who works for a refugee support group. Kaleena who provides assistance for refugees shes just arrived in valley conclusion croatias border with bosnia responding to a call from a colleague jack and injured refugees in urgent need of help. In getting yet these instruments. What theyre going. To try to make today to take a bus and put it back to the night when. The bosnian authorities have banned refugees from using Public Transportation limiting their freedom of movement makes them easier to monitor. That is there. To greet pakistani government as the speculators are going with Margaret River but i would say that in the past 2 months it has become a hot spot for other people other demographics sleeping on the streets and an empty man was over a bush back from brazil. They had for a village on the border around 13 kilometers from delicately. A house standing empty since the bosnian war now serves as a shelter for injured refugees. Look a has to see a doctor immediately. I was stopped at the border. They said stop stop. Then a Croatian Policeman hit me in the face with his gun and i fell in laon the ground then he took his baton and started beating me with it. The injured man islam enough of algeria to help us drove him to a village in secret even transporting refugees in private vehicles its forbidden carolyn or intends to document the physical abuse to use it as evidence. The problem is we cant take any action against our police here in croatia even so i think its important to record everything hes seen. Wife many in the official refugee camp in belich a clue she say that been pushed back illegally and the situation here is reaching critical mass. Earlier this summer 32 people in the camp are injured in a fire thought to be caused by a hot plate the people save themselves by jumping from windows. Only taking at most 700 of the 8000 refugees stuck inside impoverished bosniaherzegovina overcrowding in other towns along the border is even worse. Carolyn moves on to zagreb shes horrified at whats happening along croatians border Croatian Police have been pushing refugees back into bosnia this video from 2018 is said to be picked illegal pushbacks the accusation still stand today. Even this unbelievable video has left the croatian government cold they know every trick to shoot down every criticism of the corrosion border police. That the responding. To has been indications of systematic mistreatment of refugees at the Border Guards and they are hopeful of i have great confidence in our police the croatian officers in the region along our border with bosnia are doing an outstanding job. There on alert day and night to protect our country and the entire European Union will be going to forgive if you ever feel ok. But people like carolyn are from that are you serious and geo for refugees in zagreb are coming under increasing pressure and now someone has smashed up the n. G. O. S vehicle. But this is the conic of the croatian government is treating us almost like criminals. One of us was put before a judge and convicted because he offered to help refugees with the governments watching us and making life difficult for us. Everyone knows that every move against us is politically motivated. Or political with the. Back in the boston village of still its carolinas come to have another look at lamine the injured refugee as soon as the pain subsides his group hopes to make another attempt at crossing the croatian border. But i dont have a good feeling. Obviously the e. U. Is turning a blind eye to whats happening here on this border full of violence. And the refugees are taking ever greater risks to cross into croatia. The situation at the gates of the e. U. Is deteriorating fast. She intends to enjoy her free lifestyle to the late hours of the morning. Is often among the last lines on the dance floor. Now for many people the best sparkling wine in the world is of course champagne which can only use that designation if its produced in the champagne region of northeast and friends but across the border in neighboring belgium wine makers have created sparkling wines of their own which experts have judged to be even better than the french original. In belgium the corks are popping in this time were not talking about the famous belgian beer but about belgian bubbly the bulldozers are World Champion bubbles and the former coal mining region of mom produces a luxurious drink. The song of the wind turbine in the shandi old is a bubbly that cant be called champagne but it puts them all to shame. But of all sort of more good for board the false this is revenge for the last fall where the cloud or the french jury members called for several recounts that they just couldnt believe it but its no joke the belgians one. This is news live from the lead chinas military breaks the silence on the hong kong protests in what is being called a thinly veiled warning the Army Releases a propaganda video of a drill of armed troops calling a protest could beijing be considering whether to send the military through breal. Also coming up u. S. Democratic president ial hopefuls face off in a 2nd debate prep on a job i did comes under attack from all sides on a number of issues including his position on women but he fights back by support a womans right to choose our support its a constitutional right. And in germany takes flak from the United States after foreign minister title mounts refuses a request from washington to joining Naval Mission to go through security in the persian gulf as tensions between iran and the west throw. Plus it was the single biggest act of resistance in occupied europe during world war 2 the warsaw uprising 75 years ago polish fighters targeted attacks to try and drive the nazis out of the polling it did not end well today the country is honoring their 2nd but. Im sorry kelly welcome to the program the head of the chinese army in hong kong has condemned the prodemocracy protests in the territory chen doubt she said that unrest should not be tolerated stoking fears of intervention the army has also released a propaganda video to commemorate its 92nd anniversary it shows a military drill of arms troops calling protest recent demonstrations have seen violent clashes between protesters and police with tear gas and rubber bullets being fired protesters have been on the streets of hong kong for months after the government put forth a controversial extradition bill. Well take a closer look at the response to those protests by hong kongs military chief he said the following recently there have been a series of extremely violent incidents happening in hong kong this as damage the prosperity and the stability of the city and challenge the rule of law and social order the should not be tolerated and we express our strong condemnation. Lets get more on the story now were joined here in the studio by date of used china policy analyst Clifford Cone and so we heard it there essentially the military commander there in hong kong saying that unrest in the territory should not be tolerated this is a threat isnt it i think so i mean nothing is said by accident in these situations and i think you have to do a certain amount of interpretation and in the absence of of very public debate but i think theres no theres no doubt here that this is a clear message as you mentioned its a symbolic arson but its a pretty powerful symbol a 1000 troops and even though they kept a very very low profile its always had that element of threat there but in addition to you know the words that have been used weve also seen this video i mean this highly produced clearly intimidating video showing this training of armed troops quelling a protest in a place that quite frankly looks like hong kong what is the goal there you know i think even down to the color of the taxis in the video would show that the line towel and colored taxis and everything is in constant ease which is also the language the chinese spoken in hong kong theres a very definite message here during the protests weve seen a lot of tear gas and you see sponge sponge grenades and weve seen rubber bullets but but its still been fairly low key standard anti riot equipment but in these videos we can see machine guns we can see heavily armored. Troops and its more like a war zone there you know climbing up all these and using equipment its its like a scene from the old warrior movie which was very popular in china a couple years ago which showed about the strength of the of the Peoples Liberation army as the Chinese Military is known so the message is very very threatening i think it is and one of the worries is that you know there is the potential here that we could see you know another Tiananmen Square style situation in hong kong with the military brutally suppressing these these prodemocracy activists. That have been on the streets recently is that a plausible scenario do you think are those valid concerns i think given that were 30 years its 30 years since john amana we have the big we have the big events to mark the anniversary. Obviously outside china i think its always at the forefront of peoples minds weve seen some extreme crackdowns over the years i mean ive seen the Chinese Military in action against against weavers in jiang and then also in tibet in areas so we know what can be done but at the same time both of those while they were serious were very much crowd control rather than the new sort of extreme situation that we saw in tiananmen so in this year given 70 years since the foundation of the peoples republic of china when the government wants everything to be kept just so and to show a powerful and patriotic image i think theyre unlikely to do anything that would cause too much instability at the same time they need to keep things running smoothly in hong kong for the very same reason so who knows its a very delicate balance and at a very tense time especially in Hong Kong Clifford could in china policy analyst thank you. Well looking at some of the comments from hong kong protesters it seems that many are not intimidated by this show of power one person commenting on Facebook Says there isnt a big difference between Hong Kong Police and the Peoples Liberation army right now as police have already used forced against protesters and expressed doubts that the military will actually be deployed in hong kong and another here saying the people in hong kong dont accept the abuse of power and that the threat of military presence quote wont change what we believe in. Lets get more now were joined here in the studio by my colleague terry chan who is from hong kong you know we saw the reactions there so if this was a scare tactic it appears to be failing least for some yeah actually looking at online comments you can see a lot of people responding with such. Jokes and they really dont take this very seriously and. People are very used to this kind of threats from the beijing government and since the protests began actually they have received condemnation from the government so they taking it as a threat but i mean its one thing to Say Something online its quite quite a different one to actually practice it how do you think you know in practice this particular tactic might impact the protests on the ground so if they actually military presence on the ground of course there was intimidation some fears among the people. It will remind them of what happened. 30 years ago but as i said many people. And for many people actually they think that they have nothing to lose and. So what they are focusing on is what they can do next and what they can go forward and we mentioned that youre from hong kong you know you know quite well you know the mood there you know the feeling just give us a sense for how things are right now actually many protests are very motivated now. And they all the nice thing is theyre organizing assembly and demonstration in the coming days and so i dont think and. Certainly defiance in answer to this effort in fact to try and calm things to get so much. Well now lets get a quick check of some other stories making news around the world we head to yemen where dozens of soldiers are dead after hoopy rebels targeted a military base in the port city of aden the drone a missile attack took place during a military parade aden is where yemen saudi backed government is based who these who are supported by iran say that the parade was being used to prepare and attack against them. U. S. Officials have told American Media outlets that hundreds of bin laden the son of slain al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in a military airstrike was considered to be the successor to lead the terrorist group and had a 1000000. 00 bounty on his head both the white house and the pentagon declined to confirm the reports. And Health Authorities in the democratic republic of congo say that a 3rd person has been tractable in the border city of goma the patient is the one year old daughter of a man who died from the disease earlier this week authorities in neighboring rwanda have closed the border with congo over fears that the outbreak could spread. The russian army has been called in to help to fight wildfires that are tearing through siberia and other eastern regions military transport planes and helicopters are being deployed to drop water the fires are being spread by strong winds there so far have a goal to nearly 30000 square kilometers of territory. And the United States democratic president ial hopefuls has that have again clashed in a televised debate as the Party Decides who will take on donald trump in the 2020 alexion candidates disagreed on a wide range of issues from immigration climate to health care 10 potential candidates lined up but all eyes were on former Vice President joe biden and his main rival California Senator. Joe biden had seen it coming come on harris renewed her attack on the Democratic Front runner in the 2nd round of t. V. Debates. But this time the former Vice President was prepared and went on the offensive to the senator said several plans to the floor and anytime someone tells you to get something good in 10 years you should wonder why or to 10 years you know who says no talk about the fact the planet in 10 years will cost 3. 00 trillion dollars if you will lose your employer based insurance and in fact you know this is the single most important issue sedition the poll he drew a stinging response. So i think that you should really think about what youre saying but the reflective and understand that the people of america want access to health care. There and do not want cause to be there barrier to getting back with the hardy porch and roots resume if youre a president absolutely not number one other candidates joined in on the attack and even the crowd got involved to criticize bidens track record on immigration. I never heard him talk about any of this when he was his secretary. Please be respectful was respectful in the crowd. Biden did not get all of the attention the democrats are divided between centrists and progressives and the battle for the party soul will determine who will face off with trump in the 2020 elections. Many democrat voters are in favor of a lurch to the left. I think the time for matter is he has passed and as we heard yesterday or harm republicans are going to say that democrats are crazy and i am socialists whether they come with centrist or like just policies so now the opportunity to push the partys policies the democrats really want but in their desire to evict trump from the white House Democrats might be focusing too much on the incumbent 1st of all the president is a race i think the biggest challenge is whether or not you want to position yourself as a person who can win the vote or a person who can defeat and it sounds like the same thing but its not the joining of people right now who are voting for democrats theyre looking for candidates who can beat trump and that doesnt mean that theyre looking at that moment patients or even their skills that are even their issues. In a contest where personality topps politics front runner biden still holds many cards. More now were joined here by boris foreman political scientist at bard college in berlin so i mean we heard a fair did we see anyone who could potentially defeat trump well in a in a political system as divided and polarized as the u. S. Were not just the 2 parties are divided but the parties within themselves or the web difficult to tell i guess different electrodes will see very Different Things in those in those debates also i think the results of these debates are very bold the tow in 2 weeks time nobody will remember exactly how one of the kind of thats performed but were seeing the field closing in on fewer kind of bets at least and of course you know currently its a very polarized nation so i mean what would a candidate have to offer to the public in order to even stand a chance in 2020 thats exactly the split that we see reflected in the Democratic Party. The answer is new clear some say we need someone who can definitely go to the back to the status quo before trump there would be biden a moderate candidate others say well theres a reason for trump being elected which is. Which comes from true economic grievances social grievances and they need to be addressed and that would be the more progressive candidates so the answer is not all clear and even though the number of candidates that might have a real chance to run and campaign for the presidency is is is reducing this rift is still being maintained top of those 11 more about the number because i mean this is the 2nd round of debates mean there were too many there are too many people out there on wants to change it at this point too many people in the running how is that impacting the race so far well it can oftentimes its said to have helped trump become the president in the republican context where. A couple of president ial elections ago there were all to too many candidates which which often helps more radical positions but its what were seeing is that in september the next debates will already reduce by a lot the number of candidates we have 20 candidates right now only 6 or 7 are fulfilling the requirements of the of the Democratic Party to to actually show up at the next debate so i think in september that we will already be clear that there are 66 candidates that have a viable chance could he think will still be standing or warren and centers for sure biden harris who to jake and or work are the ones that are fulfilling the criteria as of now but i mean a lot can still change i think the deadline is august 20th for them to pass this test how many donors they have and how much the whole high they rank in the polls but i think this is very much the kind of this were looking at our farm and political scientist at bard college here in berlin thank you thanks. Youre watching news still to come on the program we meet some of the Inspiring Women taking part in the discover food. Both festival underway here in berlin and the tournament aims to make it easier for women to get involved in the beautiful game. For the u. S. Ambassador to germany has criticized Angela Merkels government for refusing to join a Naval Mission in the gulf Richard Goyder now has said the following america has sacrificed a lot to help germany remain part of the west germany is the biggest economic power in europe the success brings global responsibilities he said. Germanys foreign minister has rejected that request saying that priority should be given to diplomatic efforts and to deescalate the situation. From. The German Government will not participate in the si mission proposed and planned by the United States i league we are in close agreement with our French Partners in this regard we think the strategy of maximum pressure is wrong and we do not want to military escalation we will continue to work with diplomacy. S. Highly unpopular and the drum government and the party of the foreign minister here is performing badly in the poll in the polls for months now so this is german politics this is the background one has to analyze to understand why such a clear no comes from the Foreign Ministry the ministry of defense takes a different position its led by a high profile c. D. O. Politician and we felt we could listen directly to what under great come come boy has to say. We are considering this request in close consultation with the United Kingdom and france. And we are doing this with particular consideration of our political and diplomatic goals and from this overall assessment a decision will be made. So quite confused. In one Community Minister going that way the other obvious lead to another direction so one no one could ask what is the chancellor saying but until a model is not in berlin these days shes on her annual leave of service here in berlin take it for granted that the chancellor is supporting the stance of the social democrats simply to keep a Coalition Life and that means no drum participation in such a mission and in the meantime we have to mention that last week there was also a call from the u. K. This is of course before Boris Johnson took office as Prime Minister of the u. K. Essentially proposing a European Naval mission to the gulf war where could germany stand on such a mission i think under a year of paean flak germany would probably find a row with the have been similar naval european let missions in the past one of them off the coast of east africa quite successful one and germany had in its vessels in that for 2 if you look at the german navy these days there are many many vessels undergoing repair or overhauling so its quite doubtful that germany really will be able to send ships into such a mission theres some speculation here in berlin that germany might do the reconnaissance flights for such a European Mission if it should be mandated but this for sure will take some weeks and of course it has to be imagined that all of this is happening against the backdrop of increased tensions in the region fears of escalation we have we have to mention germanys foreign minister essentially saying that those tensions should be resolved through diplomacy. Just fill us in on how thats working out well germany together with france and the u. K. One has to stress here and so the european powers wants to keep the nuclear deal with iran a life and thats why johnny doesnt step into such a military mission jim is afraid that this might easily convert into a wall no one wants and germany is still the drum government still wants to know to want to end the u. S. Is putting its maximum pressure on to iran the drum stance is as we just heard the escalation and then please lets negotiate the nuclear do you care to correspond a christian trip a thank you. Germanys foreign minister heiko mass has asked the polish people for forgiveness for atrocities committed by german troops during world war 2 he was speaking as poland marks the 75th anniversary of the warsaw uprising this was the attempt by armed polish groups to liberate the capital warsaw after nearly 5 years of nazi occupation they fought against German Forces for more than 2 months but lacking soviet support they were alternately forced to surrender tens of thousands of fighters on both sides were killed as well as hundreds of thousands of civilians many massacred by German Forces during house to house combat. 75 years on many remember the harbors of this uprising including those who took part in that leisure exit kosky was one of the resistance fighters who wanted to liberate warsaw from the nazis in 1944. And draw strength and inspiration from them. Members of the scouts are also called on to do this theyve come from across poland to attend a 3 day camp. Is an opportunity to pause for a moment and take a look at what was important back then and what was tragic. You take the time to reflect on it. The last generation who have contact with those who were part of the uprising. Pleasured through kosky is one of 1500 living veterans 50000 people fought in the op rising logic still regrets that neither the russians nor the western allies came to the aid of the resistance fighters but what he does not regret was his decision to join the fight the recent womens world cup helped bring womens football to any wider audience but despite the tournament success getting involved in the game is still a struggle for many women around the globe discover football hopes to change that is an official media partner for the event which aims to help women join the beautiful game. Its no secret that youre a populist a nationalist parties a gearing up to try and make a splash at the coming european elections but whos helping them we all nationalists we saw this so we did leave or members was all when we. Own vision and principle in respect of what this except the use comfortable phrases like its a club meant for the exchange of ideas from nationalist populist movements across youre talking strategy for bang and its far more combative than that isnt it he called it gumming up the e. U. Parliament in other words blocking your purpose is essentially destructive no its to review not building you know youre breaking we know we are we are reinforcing and rebuilding the preeminence of national what is he say he said the beating heart of the globalist project is in brussels if i drive the stake through the vampire the whole thing will start anticipate well pretty selfimportant play with one thing we if we we analyze the situation in the sense that the e. U. System like the us ultimately ends up as imperialism kind of imperialism i have confidence that the forces of democracy of real democrats in europe will be stronger. And i hope they will because indeed there is a rise of populism in europe doesnt look like it doesnt well wait for the results of the 21000 elections and then well talk i know you did better in bavaria and youve done a little better in your city but there but theyre very strong and theyre very powerful and we will see whether they keep getting strength and i doubt it its the back seat particularly noticeable i know what i said it can show in 2013 if youre black go back and i want to stoney and to be a white country these were your words in turkey 13 Television Talk show here. But i mean were roundly condemned by other politicians including the Human Rights Group here in parliament 80 percent of stern and we had a there was apologists own 80 percent of stern and agreed with that statement so take it as an event to present the name of the stadium and you would have been. You would have won the election you know win the elections you. Did very well but i want to about the status of this visit to senator kerry says im worried. He says that. We will get to the racism issue what do you want with all this crackdown on migrants you want to preserve your identity and son we want to preserve the italian and european identity we want to why its all nationalist parties across europe you want to see more White Nationalist. Pushing that idea the dented area its not a matter of White Nationalist parties believe hes not a White Nationalist party lorenzos from tell ourselves he saw an identity conception of politics awaking all across europe that they dont its very means white and that thats why i said we are meeting what is it i mean whats the protest to the european identity the european christina roots for example the european culture detail and culture but it is you that is giving to this identity tyrion project the iraqis. Arrested the blow up and thats not the demeaning in any way that the league and our representatives are doing so we want to protect the coulter aleuts the christian roots of europe is not hard to work with you go around saying muslims equal threat was an equal threat over and over and that not only analog some people are going to react badly and some people are going to turn violent we want to keep the german dimness and they dont even the European Union but were talking about germany here we dont want to have that a Muslim Country we accept muslims there are lots of muslims who are well integrated into our society who take there is no problem everythings fine but what we do not want to accept is that islam is starting to have an impact on our social life and our public life on our you know. Our own store you know. Addressing the point i wanted to make about about this idea that are a threat to germany. Muslims are spread to this is for example something what were getting from the Jewish Community the Jewish Community is not keen on new world lets face it the situation in venezuela could hardly be more complex the United States along with some 2 dozen countries is backing the new interim leader one way though russia and China Support the incumbent Nicolas Maduro now we have france spain germany and britain who have recognized the new leader as president how long can you go on with this people are defecting from the Administration One of your colleagues and as well rocked affected accusing matter of violating the constitution and hes right on air force general in the air force. Military attache in washington you know military fashion washington is gone how long can you hold the view doesnt depend on that i mean a president doesnt hold or doesnt hold on because of Foreign Countries ask them or like them or not hes impoverished the country and hes subject to the massive repression well i think the aim here is to have the transition that is taking place continue to take place peacefully we met with the. We met with. One guy goes representative the new ambassador to the United States and one white go is the president of venezuela at the present time we believe strongly that the morning to you we believe strongly that the. That the venezuelan people should be commended for the way that theyve handled this they used the rule of law to rep to remove. Mr maduro hes still going hes still venice and that could you would you mind letting me finish my sentence as plain as the International Community is going to want why dont the recognition is that i mean i got it from inside the country that you know he absolutely does have it from inside the country said people on the streets thats not the same thing isnt what it what do you expect that people on the streets as power people in the science its love. People on the streets is support people on the streets as an expression i mean come come and go and the other in the crowd and fertilizer future and it can come and go well the people that are supporting. The girl are the rogues gallery in the world including the iranians. The the russians the North Koreans pull frosting on mccain you know is he was is a sense that you dont think this is a stalemated situation so its not now all the countries that are liberal democracies that have the rule of law recognize our constitution and they recognize the legitimacy of one why they are that we are in a situation where a drug cartel has taken all the leaders of power by the way doesnt mean youre going to succeed does it doesnt mean youre going to resign die trying we have no option but to fight for our people i will fight for my people until i draw my last breath how long do you think president maduro can hold on now 6 years i hope the. Weeks of mass protest in hong kong show no sign of coming to an end but how long will vary do you put up with you more than a few weeks ago a few days ago that if things got worse the chinese army might consider taking to the streets you said when theres trouble in hong kong when things turn so theres violence in our history our fear is that if the police are now able to control what is happening here theres a remote risk the chinese army would get involved how remote is that risk if its so well known of the why why did you why did you mention no i hope you will never happen why did you mention if it was a remote risk trying to frighten people you know its a fact everybody understand except you you dont understand it. Hong kong is a place where it has been operating is operating under the one country 2 systems it is a not very successfully is it calm its a huge political compromise we are part of china under the basic law china has a responsibility to ensure that hong kong is stable everybody who is doing business here want to see hong kong to be stable all right so yes under the basic law there is provision for the the beijing government to interfere if nobody hoped that it would happen im trying to say that were trying to of avoid this happening so im not instilling fear into people im simply reflecting what is stated in the basic law and what is the political reality of the situation of course we created size the Hong Kong Government especially the council tried to establish a law which your hong kong residents disagree and it doesnt trust sold that we show you the latest carry larger that you the chief executive you blame the carrier kerry land the chief exec shes beijings appointing russian history she is the appointee even socalled elected by some hong kong representation is still there why i said why hasnt she was what i ask how can people ask how can people is there democracy in syria system we need we in hong kong need to gain the trust and confidence of beijing so that they can allow us the freedom of political reform what about the other way round what about beijings duty to earn the trust of people in hong kong one spot ways where they have managed you know this aspect has been runs both ways only 2 years they have managed its own about unfair and then been doing of the most of trying to win you know holes all show that people do not of the majority of people still do not identify some to identify as also beijing or my National Guard would have to work on them. Everybody work got to work harder you think the people of hong kong should play nice to their masters in beijing i might throw the crumbs i do use only to use over the words the words i use is that we should communicate with each other and wish to instill confidence in each other thats what im saying why china is not using force to press down the demonstration why they compromise why because they seek opportunity to prove they can challenge. This week conflict zone is at the annual security conference in munich i mean plenty of recriminations and bad blood between europe and washington are you trying to tell me that europe has lived up to its commitments under nato is that what youre trying to tell me because believe me there is no belief or that on anybodys part that some of the european nations are not living up to their commitments and indeed look ive done this for 10 years ive come over here and tried to talk the nato countries into living up to their agreements they patted us on the head and said all well were on track to try to do this or try to do that let me put it bluntly the problem is that many Member States dont trust donald trump do this his commitment to nato why should they i mean hes done everything he could to undermine trust that hes 100 percent behind you know i havent seen that clearly donald trump has shaken things up theres no question about it hes gotten also a bit moved to start my only allies to sit up and take notice because he was very concerned about the lack of fair burden sharing inside the alliance and he wanted allies to pay more in his inimitable way he got everybody to Pay Attention to the necessity of putting more money into their Defense Budgets chancellor Angela Merkel said last year the there were good reasons to continue fighting for the transatlantic relationship but we had it she added we cant count on it anymore. Well im im sorry she feels like that we dont feel like that you know for the house of representatives they had so little confidence in chumps intentions toward nato that last year they had to pass a law with bipartisan support stating that is u. S. Policy to remain a member of nato prohibiting funds to be used to withdraw from the alliance so little confidence do they have in the president s commitment to nato her a i saw that as a great expression in washington of bipartisan support for nato and i saw it when we were there 10 days ago for the 70th anniversary nato is well supported across both sides of the aisle thats a great thing why why are you going off isaac and not by the president there are 200. 00 countries in the world right the vast majority of them believe the proc obamas brand of leadership was far better than either george bushs or down from you see the curve go like this under obama and then like this under trump in europe and asia and latin america and africa and so we can talk about israel where president obama had very sharp differences with a right wing government led by Bibi Netanyahu but i dont think that it wasnt just it wasnt just the sharp differences there were deep contradictions in the middle east policy good well we i mean you have a core belief good you voted against the president to enter an israel this was rooted largely in the iran Nuclear Agreement and if we had to do it over again if the price of having a better relationship with israel was not having iran Nuclear Agreement and potentially going to war with iran that was not a price that we were going to pay all the latest polls show the french germans the british now regard the us as a greater danger to their interests than china would you regard as your prime danger how much blame do you think washington should take for that. Well look at sometimes events drive us in a direction that we shouldnt be driven. We. We dont feel the same way about her your piece. And friends or were more like are you know there are a lot of recriminations these days to get over iran. Deal as a deal to try to discipline a bad boy in the classroom that was doing 5 bad things they addressed one of them but theyre interested a big one didnt they dressed one of them a big one they have dressed one of them ben rhodes in the short time that we have left lets look ahead to the next president ial election next year. What kind of Democratic Party do you think is going to be capable of beating donald trump with his massive following his dominance of the airwaves is dominance of social media which proved so devastating in the last president ial election what kind of democratic vote is going to be able to i think counteract the fact that the current but the massive following is 40 percent he is the most unpopular us president to run for reelection in my life he sets the news agenda very good at 3 then doesnt they dominate is that it takes a look at what has got to live with the world as it is or doesnt check the Democratic Party just routed down from Republican Party it got some of the seats we won 40 seats in the house yeah and won by the largest popular vote margin in the history of Midterm Election the largest Democratic Victory in the house since watergate. Voters in the European Parliament elections have shaken out the confidence politics turning away from the major power. Plots that have dominated brussels in recent years and boosting the smaller groupings the greens the liberals and the far right apparently european voters werent so keen on the status quo only more do you accept a share of the blame for the for the 1st Voter Participation has been very very high historically 51 percent more or less in medium in in all of europe but they dont like the status quo like a mt to say that but this is your general crediting legitimacy to european institutions shows that people start to understand how relevant to European Union is and that it really affects their daily life and they future their one mark and ability they want more transparency i think they will ask much more participation for whoever is going around europe in the future thats a nice way of spinning it isnt it the top jobs were carved up to look at the backroom stitch up that people were told wasnt going to happen again. And it did it did despite all these promises why you let the voters them not i mean 1st of all why do you speak about the backroom deal i mean it was so transparent. And all the process of the names in the game i think it was very very true not at all into the Outgoing Commission president he called it not very transparent quite an indictment from john burns that wasnt its true but i dont have to agree with him on this point i think its not the best process but its the process that this is right in the treaties people are losing faith in the heres the paradox as in the highest level of support for membership since 983. 00 but more than half the people of europe think he is likely to collapse within a generation all the while for the 1st breath this is also the legacy that our societies out of the chaos and implosion that are fortunately we have seen in the u. K. Has been a vaccination rather than infection for the rest of europe we have seen so you should be stronger so as a result of that we have seen if i can finish my sentence to youre a barometer counter of to count tree if youre planning on popularity has increased even him hungary with a few exceptions of Czech Republic and we have seen one after the extreme right Political Parties dropping the agenda of leaving the European Union and leaving the euro why all the doubts about whether the e. U. Can actually Stay Together i mean spains foreign minister yours a barrel was asked in the interview if it was so fragile if europe was so fragile it could break up his comment was honestly yes honestly yes yes so europe has always been growing start out of big crisis we were born out of the ashes of world war 2. And there we al it is that is one of the best places in the world to live we never had it so good in europe but voters are the they are very disappointed very disappointed and it was supposed to be about them you were seeing the turnout go down in every single election since the european elections started and this was the big push to rope more people in because they were going to be listened to and they werent yes i mean the call its a bit this is a big failure whichever way you like to spin it but it is a big factor i mean the publication of democracy Representative Democracy is what im talking about but the participation in the european elections has been raised also because of the better understanding of the citizens about the need of the because the expectation they might actually be listened to thats why they voted they were told it is going to be different lets just go back to europe and the new Political Landscape after the european elections if he is joining the. Identity and Democracy Group which is going to be the 5th Largest Group in the European Parliament not the 3rd largest which is what youre aiming for your party promises to be a thorn in the flesh of the stuff what does that mean shes going to block and disrupt to create trouble now what were trying to get out is the message that were in favor of the European Union and it has been set up by the Founding Fathers of the European Union were against the effortless the union we want to keep this of the serenity of the nation states what we think is that democracy only functions within a nation state and we want to Work Together where it is necessary to do so but we do not want to to move towards ever closer you know extreme right populist did not have. The earthquake they expected to have been actually have an earthquake of scandals and the liberal liberal conservative forces are stronger than previously the greens advanced the socialist collapsed the extreme left lost almost 50 seats 5 years ago there was no far right at all was there so you hold the door open for them during the last 5 years i think this is not the time for blame game me this is the time to stand for the truth isnt it time to look at what happened the achievements of the last 5 years back to reach a passing variance come to mean aboard this United Kingdom a more damaged weaker government the reason why was a very minor heart was never in the thing so you why you saw it as a current of damage limitation exercise so you say that she said she was quite concerned to deliver back that she promised only numerable cations to deliver back and she failed and in the end im afraid well have to fail well shell have the party lost confidence in and so did the house of commons but there was a lot of ignorance on the leaves side wasnt that i mean even among some of the most visible campaigners like Boris Johnson for instance when he was questioned on t. V. Last september turned out he didnt know that switzerland was in the Single Market and refused to accept it when he was told it was the clear im not responsible for what boris is the we voted to let your living breaks it and you hear this sort of nonsense come out why dont you say this is wrong were british people deserve the referendum result to be implemented it isnt the truth be told i sometimes they deserve it and they dont deserve a whole lot of m. P. s who say they accept the referendum results and they are campaigning against it you happy that Boris Johnson being ordered to appear in court over claims that he lied during the reverend well over this 350000000 pounds a week to be well the person hes done by his is an absolute on the line and actually if its not matter well yes of course it why it doesnt have a bearing on the. Merits of the can pull it out while it does because clearly hes doing it from a particular perspective if the aim is to damage boris it will have precisely the opposite effect you know i do advise our European Partners not to overplay their hand what your negotiators seem to obsess about is that britain must appear to lose no from this absolutely not i mean you have made it clear that leave leaving the e. U. Is a mistake and that should become a selffulfilling prophecy now now britain has to lose its losers britain has to look i mean you played the part but but that again is a lunacy i mean. No we just say that membership of the European Union has benefits and of course if youre not pamper you dont enjoy those benefits its not punishment it just statement of fact the was the largest Trading Group in the world they hold all the cards its their club that youre leaving they will decide what rules apply should you wish to take advantage of some of the. Privileges on offer. With that club i think but i thought we had in our manifesto 18 months or so ago it was that we wanted to create a comprehensive training arrangement with them and theyve agreed on the use of commanded everyone i was with richard pan id be quite happy just to replicate the terms of that youve been saying that no deal is increasingly attractive but thats not what you and your vocally colleagues promised the country was it time and again they promised great deals with the e. U. And everyone else and said that they just fall into britain slapped and turned out well. I have to confess that i think its in the European Unions interests to strike a sensible free trade deal with the United Kingdom and whether we make that agreement before we leave which looks rather unlikely or after we leave i believe that thats what will happen but in the end my point is the only program you promise is work well. Vote leave campaign didnt make promises we were campaigning its your presumption that there will be maybe a crash out without a b. But its not said the deal is on the table in the u. K. In the next Prime Minister can still subscribe to it or make propositions how we can improve it. I think its everything challenging 1st i meet a muslim. The deceit of the unused live camera lens chinas military breaks his silence on the hong kong protests in what is being called a thinly veiled warning the Army Releases a propaganda video of a drill up to arms troops telling a protest could beijing decide to send the military. Also coming out and the United States democratic president ial. Hopefuls face off in a 2nd debate cutter joe biden comes under attack from all sides and a number of issues including his position on women he responded parts of poor a womans right to choose i support its a constitutional right. And germany takes flak from the United States after it refuses to request from the wash a request from washington to join a Naval Mission to bolster security in the persian gulf all amid rising tensions between iran and the west plus it was the single biggest act of resistance in occupied europe during world war 2 the warsaw uprising 75 years ago polish fighters started an attack to try and drive the nazis out of poland it did not and well today the country is honoring their sacrifice. Im sorry kelly welcome to the program for the 1st time the chinese army in hong kong has condemned the prodemocracy protests in the territory military leader chen doubt she said that the unrest should not be tolerated a comment that has raised fears that the Chinese Military may be planning to intervene in what is also big seen as a warning the army has released a propaganda video showing a drill of armed troops quelling protests. Show of force by the chinese troops stationed in hong kong but this video released by the Peoples Liberation army is not just about regular military training. Also show soldiers facing down demonstrators. The video will be seen by many as a thinly veiled track of intervention by the Chinese Military and home kongs inter. Affairs especially when a company by this. Message from the commander of Chinese Forces in the territory Major General chandelle shunk spoke of extremely violent incidents happening in hong kong and warned that these should not be tolerated. Del shunk was referring to the mass protests that have been taking place in the city for weeks often resulting in clashes between demonstrators and police they jane has become increasingly vocal in its condemnation of the prodemocracy protests. On thursday the chinese Foreign Ministry raised the prospect of military intervention. Woman we believe the hong kong artist and of the piano will continue to be a stabilizing painter of hong kongs long term prosperity and stability. Also in the propaganda video hong kong earth expressing their admiration for the p. L. O. And their love for Mainland China this vision of a model hong kong citizen differs sharply from that of the defiant protesters who continue to throng the streets of the city. Lets get more on this story now were joined here in the studio by do you have used china policy analyst Clifford Coonan so we heard it there essentially the military commander there in hong kong saying that unrest in the territory should not be tolerated this is a threat isnt it i think so i mean nothing is said by accident in these situations and i think you have to do a certain amount of interpretation in the absence of of very public debate. But i think theres no theres no doubt here that this is a clear message as you mentioned its a symbolic hours and but its a pretty powerful symbol a 1000 troops and even though they kept a very very low profile its always had that element of threat there but in addition to you know the words that have been used weve also seen this video i mean this highly produced clearly intimidating video showing this training of armed troops quelling a protest in a place that quite frankly looks like hong kong what is the goal there i think even down to the color of the taxis in the video would show that the line towel and color taxis and everything is in companies which is also the language the chinese spoken in hong kong theres a very definite message here during the protests weve seen a lot of tear gas and weve seen sponge sponge grenades and weve seen rubber bullets but but its still been fairly low key standard antiriot equipment but in these videos we can see machine guns we can see heavily armored. Troops and its more like a war zone there you know climbing up walls using. Equipment its its like a scene from the wolf warrior movie which was very popular in china a couple years ago which showed about the strength of the Peoples Liberation army as the Chinese Military is known so the message is very very threatening i think and this and one of the worries is that you know there is the potential here that we could see you know another Tiananmen Square style situation in hong kong with the military brutally suppressing these these prodemocracy activists that have been on the streets recently is that a plausible scenario do you think are those valid concerns i think given that were 30 years its 30 years since john amana we had the big we had the big events to mark the anniversary. Obviously outside china i think its always at the forefront of peoples minds weve seen since extreme crackdowns over the years i mean ive seen the Chinese Military action against them against weavers and engine jiang and then also in tibet in areas so we know what can be done but at the same time both of those while they were serious were very much crowd control rather than the you sort of extreme situation that we saw in tiananmen so in this year given 70 years since the foundation of the peoples republic of china when the government wants everything to be kept just so and to show a powerful and patriotic image i think theyre unlikely to do anything that would cause too much instability at the same time they need to keep things running smoothly in hong kong for the very same reason so who knows its a very delicate balance and at a very tense time especially in Hong Kong Clifford couldnt china policy analyst thank you. And he talks with prodemocracy protesters about their running with the authorities in hong kong thats coming up indeed he is asia right after this bulletin but 1st we turn to the United States where democratic president ial hopefuls have again clashed in the televised debate as the Party Decides who will take. Donald trump in the 2020 alexion candidates disagreed on a wide range of issues from immigration and climate to health care 10 potential candidates lined up but all eyes were on former Vice President joe biden and his main rival California Sen campbell harris. Joe biden had seen it coming come on a harris renewed her attack on the Democratic Front runner in the 2nd round of t. V. Debates. But this time the former Vice President was prepared and went on the offensive to the senator said several plans to the floor and that any time someone tells you to get something good in 10 years you should wonder why it takes 10 years if you know who says no talk about the fact that the plan in 10 years will cost 3. 00 trillion dollars if you will lose your employer based insurance and in fact you know this is the single most important issue facing the pope he drew a stinging response. So i think that you should really think about what youre saying but be reflective and understand that the people of america want access to health care and do not want cost to be their barrier to Getting Better with the higher deportation rates resume if youre a president absolutely not number one other candidates joined in on the attack and even the crowd got involved to criticize bidens track record on immigration that means i never heard him talk about any of this when he was the secretary. Please be respectful when hes very straight for the crowd. Biden did not get all of the attention the democrats are divided between centrists and progressives and the battle for the party soul will determine who will face off with trump in the 2020 elections. Many democrat voters are in favor of a lurch to the left. I think the time for matter is he has passed and as we heard yesterday our republicans are going to say that democrats are crazy and i am socialists whether they come with centrist or like just policies so now the opportunity to push the partys policies the democrats really want but in their desire to evict trump from the white House Democrats might be focusing too much on the incumbent. First of all the president is a racist i think the biggest challenge is whether or not you want to position yourself as a person who can win the vote or a person who can defeat trunk and it sounds like the same thing but its not jordy if people right now who are voting for democrats theyre looking for a candidate who can beat trump and that doesnt mean that theyre looking at their qualifications or even their skills that are even their issues. In a contest where personality topps politics front runner biden still holds many cards stacked thought that lets get more now were joined here by boris foreman political scientist at bard college and our lands i mean we heard that there are did we see anyone who could potentially defeat trump well in a political system as divided and polarized as the u. S. Were not just the 2 parties are divided but the parties within themselves are divided its difficult to tell i guess different electrodes will see very Different Things in those in those debates also i think the results of these debates are very bold the toe in 2 weeks time nobody will remember exactly how one of the kind of this perform but were seeing the field closing in on fewer candidates at least and of course you know currently its a very polarized nation so i mean what would a candidate have to offer to the public in order to even stand a chance in 2020 thats exactly the split that we see reflected in the damage. Critic part of the answer isnt clear some say we need someone who can definitely go to the back to the status quo before trump there would be biden a moderate candidate others say well theres a reason for trump being elected which is which comes from true economic grievances social grievances and they need to be addressed and that would be the more progressive candidates so the answer is not all clear and even though the number of candidates that might have a real chance to run and campaign for the presidency is is is reducing this rift is still being maintained top of those a little bit more about the number because i mean this is the 2nd round of debates and there were too many there are too many people out there on wants to touch it at this point too many people in the running how is that impacting the race so far well it can oftentimes its said to have helped trump become the president in the republican context where. A couple of president ial elections ago there were all to too many candidates which which often helps more radical positions but its what were seeing is that in september the next debates will already have reduced by a lot the number of candidates we have 20 candidates right now only 6 or 7 are fulfilling the requirements of the of the Democratic Party to to actually show up at the next debate so i think in september that we will already be clear that there are 66 candidates that have a viable chance could you think also extending worth warren and centers for sure biden harris going to jake and or work are the ones that are fulfilling the question as of now but i mean a lot can still change i think the deadline is august 20th for them to pass this test how many donors they have and how much the whole high they rank in the polls but i think this is very much the kind of this were looking at are swarming political scientist at bard college chamblin thank you thanks. Lets get a quick check of some other stories making news around the world in yemen dozens of soldiers were killed after pukki rebels targeted a military base in the port city of aden a drone and missile attack took place during a military parade 8 in his where yemen saudi backed government is faced with these who are supported by iran say that the parade was being used to prepare and attack against. U. S. Officials have told American Media outlets that hundreds of bin laden the son of slain al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in a military air strike was considered to be the successor to leave the terrorist group the u. S. Had offered a 1000000. 00 for information leading to his capture or the white house in the pentagon declined to confirm reports of the airstrike. And Health Authorities in the democratic republic of congo say that a 3rd person has contracted the vola in the border city of goma the patient in the one year old daughter of a man who died of the disease earlier this week authorities in neighboring rwanda have closed the border with congo over fears that the outbreak could spread. And the russian army has been called in to help fight wildfires that are tearing through siberia and other eastern regions military transport planes and helicopters are being deployed to drop water the fires are being spread by strong winds and the gulf nearly 30000 square kilometers of the territory. Youre watching news still to come on the Program Honoring a failed attempt to drive the nazis out of one of europes biggest countries in world war 2 what do the survivors say today. But 1st the u. S. Ambassador to germany has criticized chancellor Angela Merkels government for refusing to join a Naval Mission in the gulf Richard Grinnell said that america has sacrificed a lot to help germany remain part of the west germany is the biggest economic power in europe the success brings global responsibilities. Germanys Foreign Ministry is rejecting never quest saying that priority should be given to diplomatic efforts and deescalating the situation. From. The German Government will not participate in the sea mission proposed and planned by the United States we are in close agreement with our French Partners in this regard we think the strategy of maximum pressure is wrong we do not want to military escalation we will continue to work with diplomacy. S. Highly unpopular and the john government and the party of the foreign minister yes indeed he is performing badly in the poll in the polls for months now so this is john politics this is the background one has to analyze to understand why such a clear no comes from the Foreign Ministry the ministry of defense takes a different position its led by a high profile c. E. O. Politician and we felt we could listen directed to what under great come come boy has to say. We are considering this request in close consultation with the United Kingdom and france. And we are doing this with particular consideration of our political and diplomatic goals and from this overall assessment a decision will be made. So quite confusing. One coming it minister going that way the other obvious lead to another direction so one no one could ask what is the chancellor saying but uncle americal is not in berlin these days shes on her annual leave of service here in berlin take it for granted that the chancellor is supporting the stance of the social democrats simply to keep a Coalition Life and that means no drum participation in such a mission and in the meantime we have to mention that last week there was also a call from the u. K. This is of course before Boris Johnson took office as Prime Minister the u. K. Sensually proposing a European Naval mission to the gulf war where could germany stand on such a mission i think under your peon flag germany would probably find a row where there have been similar naval european let missions in the past one of them off the coast of east africa quite successful one and germany had in its vessels in that for 2 if you look at the german navy these days there are many many vessels undergoing repair or overhauling so its quite doubtful that germany really will be able to send ships into such a nation theres some speculation here in berlin that germany might do the recriminations flights for such a European Mission if it should be mandated but this for sure would take some weeks and of course it has been mentioned that all of this is happening against the backdrop of increased tensions in the region fears of escalation we have we have to mention germanys foreign minister sensually saying that those tensions should be resolved through diplomacy. Just fill us in on how thats working out well germany together with france and the u. K. One has to stress here those of the european powers want to keep the nuclear deal with iran a life and thats why germany doesnt step into such a military Mission Germany is afraid that this might easily convert into a wall no one wants and germany is still the drum government still wants to know to what end the u. S. Is putting its maximum pressure on to iran the drum stance is as we just heard the escalation and then please lets negotiate the nuclear deal security correspondent christiane trip a thank you. The governor of the u. S. Territory of puerto rico over cardo eurozone is resigning tomorrow following massive protests up to half of a 1000000 Puerto Ricans have taken to the streets in recent weeks to protest corruption economic mismanagement and the response to the recent hurricane the last straw appears to have been a leaked chat laced with obscenity is about women gay people and her kinds for hurricane survivors didnt use alexander phone number and went to puerto rico to meet some of those who were pushing for the governor to step down. Hes well known for his hard hitting political and p. J. Seems to al one of the artists who have conspired to approach just in puerto rico he says he is called to be a part of the mall. With this concert we wanted to celebrate the fact that we kicked the government out of office in only 12 days but i also want to motivate people to continue to fight and to protest look how many came here today. Were he words on his lyrics lyrics that have earned him a reputation as the 1st to type p. J. Since who else says he writes about whats happening and what affects him right now its political crisis and the anger of the people caused by a Corruption Scandal and text message just in which say you disparage ordinary citizens as well as political. Look at all the messages he made for. When they came he made fun of. Community he did so many things wrong and it was very miserable for everybody to so to like get the message like this guys wrong hes got to get out one of the people targeted by the governor was joined almost. He told me he was angry but not surprised to find his name in the leaked text message just because hes always been critical of the administration but he didnt anticipate the consequences. Im very proud of what happened and really surprised by the extent of the civil commitment and here they are with the recourse for the most part or rather passive country. My young men you know take to the streets easily. And if we do the protests are small and you know we see the same people and groups you know i mean my persona is a party. For out but also worry thats real change that so many for. To rican seem to feel since governor will say you announced that he will step down thats why there are still protests taking place a new governor will soon be moving into this mention right behind me but the political crisis in puerto rico is far from over in the streets of san juan thought to say they want to continue their fight and theyre hopeful that sooner or later they will get their leaders they believe they deserve. From someone who won we drive sell. The protests attracted ordinary people from all over the island people like omar so to phone to new york and hes the wife to write up a couple of still amazed by the size of the crowds and their unity people a walk with him are going to do they more. Than accelerations ball i dont think i dont think we are ready for example being that when the born or unborn or from our party boat people are are more aware of the situation they argue about politics at their Kitchen Table the governor successor and what should happen next and the pasta you write us says she didnt pay much attention to politics but the protests really touched her heart. Because you caught arrested in Hong Kong Well we find out how things played out and promised a good conversation plus. After what the u. N. Has called genocide the government of myanmar says it wants to see the real hinge of a minority is persecuted back in the country well take a closer look. And a thundering thrill ride we get front row seats for a pocket stun you pull race a sport thats not for the faint of heart. Im melissa chan welcome to news asia thank you for joining us we start with hong kongs ongoing protests now on monday we had scheduled a guest to come on the program but he didnt end up making it because he was arrested during the weekend for obstructing a Police Officer thats according to police as a quick reminder hong kong has had a summer of discontent 1st over an unpopular extradition bill that will allow the government to hand over people in the city to china to the unrest now which has become a more general expression of resistance against the communist party in beijing so our guest activist Johnston Young ching yin was held and then at one point police took him back to his apartment for a home search here they are looking through his stuff and young had a message for everyone. Theres. A certain respond to survive. The situation there are. One or 2 or 3 children or a few. Were glad to now get our guest Johnson Young changed in on the program freed after about. 40 hours or so or was it 48 hours tell us what happened in jail. Thank you for having me so aim to show from my last part to me the police have power and they were her hostility to both s. S. We were locked in a car that was transformed into its Detention Center it was very hard because hes a great houses out there and people were not allowed to sleep at the 1st 20 hours after more than 20 hours we were cell we have rooms full full and then people were taken away to do a home search which was unnecessary so there were lots of abuse of power. Now you were arrested for obstructing police is that what happened. Well yes i was a rest as for all struction and as a mess all fat i compiled lived a Police Instruction doing that. And i dont know why the police still arrest me doing that coles to address the police punch me and they were using excess is false to stop me and then i was to came on the car to the Police Station and this is my have some experience in this all in a west but this is my this is the 1st time that the police you home so to intimidate and harass my family and then. Now we had originally planned to get you on the program to talk about this summer of protest in hong kong and why people were continuing to go out onto the street so my question is why have you been out on the streets and why do you plan to remain out on the streets. I mean the fact that the Police Brutality is still happening and worse in the systems in a phone call on this wall tend. To change so having carried them to what science or having. Spent a controversial is not enough now we require accountability and to Police Brutality and also universal suffrage because we dont want people to get hurt just because 2 men want to defend their basic freedoms and i am still on the street made my fellow activists and people because we need protection and institutionalized protection is to our human rights how do you feel about whats happening do you think its possible to have a good resolution to. I think its really up to the government to decide. I think they understand the gravity of having down to recal and we have protesters and make peace visible to us but the problem is Chinese Government is ticking and hot by a poachers they want to confront that will they want to change International Human rights. Although we appear to be sticks but were still fighting because we have no way to back down theres no room for us to be shore if we want to expand the freedoms of all poles Johnson Young kenyan thank you. Lets cross now to south asia and proposals to solve one of the regions worst refugee crises bangladesh has housed large numbers of the hinges an ethnic group in camps for years many of them have fled myanmar in 2017 in fear for their lives that countrys military had begun to crack down in Rakhine State ethnically hinges say they were the targets while the government of myanmar insists it was just going after suspected terrorists but the u. N. Special repertoire on myanmar has described the campaign as genocide myanmar is trying to convince the ranger to come back its a hard sell to people who say theyve been treated as pariahs in the land they call home. Waiting to catch a glimpse of the visitors tossed with deciding their future a delegation led by me in moscow foreign secretary has come for a 2nd time to meet with engine leaders its a 2nd try and talks working out how to repatriate the hundreds of thousands of ranger refugees and bangladesh one of the main stumbling blocks citizenship for those who live in them are for 3 generations they are entitled to apply for the what we call naturalized citizens or ones parents apply for their natural citizenship. Sons and daughters their offspring are entitled to apply for the citizenship that often however is unacceptable for many of the over 720000 to hinder who have fled the country they consider their home to escape violence and death that the ethnic minority had long been labeled Illegal Immigrants even if their families had lived in man ma for generations. Now those who found shelter in camps like the ones in bangladesh south eastern border want assurances. Are that i literally dont accept that we are citizens of a country we want our full citizenship card we will not accept just a naturalized citizen ship card we are indigenous real hinge oh we do not accept this paper we dont agree i we are donating here i doubt anybody got enough to give us full citizenship then we will go if we accept just a naturalized citizen ship card and go back they will again slaughter us and kill us we will not go out about out of the wild will. The remainder are rejecting to be treated like foreigners in their room country bangladesh blames me im awful the slow repatriation process the country will not force the ranger to go back to me and malvo and at the moment they will not return for a small nest to find for recognition that own homeland continues so. Joining us now is dr anytus shared spokesperson for the european re hinge of council i guess the fundamental problem is a lack of trust between the 2 sides between their hinge us and the government of myanmar is because the government of myanmar has not been a close race of over the past 2 years it has committed crimes against our in the community so i think their government can regain its trust by working on the 982 citizenship law for us for those who dont really understand that could you explain a little bit more about that agreement is the citizenship law its based on 1982 citizenship law which requires the one who goes to provide their ancestral documents prove that there were residing in Rakhine State or our economy before their british team that is and i 82 and 24 so most of the part of the war cannot provide such documents so why there he goes along even the ones who are. Considered as ethnic groups in ram are they cannot provide such documents so why to accept from the one your community how confident are you then that this law can change. This law can change because it is not based on the International Norms all the countries which are practicing democracy. There have certain sets of laws what is citizenship and i think if it is under part towards democracy then they should amend this law otherwise all the at the moment hes in the country including the us on the north sea and you think thats really the the main a barrier for rangers to consider being repatriated yes because if the citizenship citizen is protected by the law if warning us and not considered citizens of myanmar they are not protected by law and thats why the military has the impunity the other extremists like your kind extremists and religious extremists have the impunity to continue persecute ing our community and committing crimes on and on again and again dr anita should thank you moving on to pakistan and a traditional race that draws crowds in the countrys north farmers grab the reins and almost surf behind their bulls as they compete for the win and bragging rights. A day at the races. Crowds look for the perfect Vantage Point for this traditional pakistani spectacle. I was and landlords from around czech reprograms foster and strongest are brits. The jockeys balancing behind the fun during whos on the wooden sled as the bulls further towards the finish. The race is a part of the regions culture. This is the 1st time weve held them here with a well organized by a local colonel. But races like this are regular events in other areas and take place several times a year so. The racing is still going strong and really pakistan and alternative to the once proviso of blood sports now banned by law. Used to be dog fights and bird fights but theyre legal now but action is being taken against them and the police of showing up at those fights. Weve never seen the police show up at these races. Economy doing solid and to be fair actually paul would hasnt ruled out further cuts if the economy worsens and he just didnt commit to more cuts and otherwise that would have sent markets in a tailspin if that it wouldnt have come through for some reason but then we all know that powell is not one of the best communicators what about the effect on emerging markets. Weve been reporting on this next story the past couple of days and still havent got all of the facts but it looks like indias coffee tycoon v g siddharta took his own life he was under investigation by tax authorities Business Leaders are running great they say the governments crackdown on fraud and tax evasion goes too far. The body of indian entrepreneur v. G. Siddharta washed ashore on the banks of a river in the state of cannot occur and autopsy is trying to clarify the exact cause of death suicide a suspect says. I dont think in the morning. Getting to know the information weve. Also contacted the family members. Of the. B. G. Siddharth was one of indias most successful entrepreneurs as part of a long established coffee dentist he founded the chain cafe coffee day in 1996 he became indias largest with 1700 outlets. But then the tight turned in 2017 tax or authorities probes numerous branches and the company was said to be under financial pressure. According to media reports he left a farewell letter which read i thought for a long time but today i have given up as i could not take any more pressure from one of the private Equity Partners forcing me to buy back shares. As an entrepreneur he had failed those are the words he reportedly wrote in his farewell note in response to the companys plight siddharta was gearing up to sell a large stake in the coffee chain to cocacola the stock would fall in 20 percent to an all time low. Lets go over to bangalore john is that a buy 1st jersey youre following this story well it was that the pressure of the dodgers business failing or this added pressure from tax authorities well then board it didnt seem to have done and there was the original or not the aegis conception economy has been slowing but there was nothing fundamentally wrong with his coffee empire it was doing well but he seems to earth that shot bill that included really in the last 100 years this shock and it went up 4 times which is very very unusual in his kind of business thats on one side and on the other side it was that i backed him on the max amount of oil under 30000000. 00 which he had to cough up money to b b that are these are the government authorities had throws at these shares and multiply it to prices which he couldnt say or which meant that he had to keep borrowing to kind of he you know servicing debt and that seems to have done him instead as both his debt and the pressure from the dutch authorities a bit but just to get this they didnt do anything illegal. We dont know the answer to that yet that taxes are beastly concealed income and least tax him on one bad and it is not a small amount of money visible like you said about on a 20000000 dollars and to the extent that challenge it to school means that you dont want to get out of it all he thought it was too much of a distraction is better off enough so we dont answer to that yet so what Business Leaders getting angry about i mean does this modis crackdown differentiate between genuine business failures and actual corrupt practices. Well we need to take the step back better to do on start western media that has socialist legacy and the country as i lost citizens feel just a businessman so when somebody sees its a genuine business feeding of your very skeptical. And thats whats causing it but that said in this instance i think theres a huge amount of shot across the Business Community better man with revenues to get it into president unusable one by 5000000000. 00 assets of 2500000000. 00 had to be such an excuse as she wouldnt want to shop around and just because you dont for us there in bangalore thank you very much for the analysis on that story. Things are looking great for the chinese economy on the trade front its one of the reasons beijings pumping billions more into Infrastructure Projects thats just helping keep the economy going commuters get to enjoy the benefits. Rush hour in shanghai every morning the same story millions of commuters heading to work the citys subway system is pushed to its limits. So how the new vision high subways passenger flow can reach over 10000000 a day during the morning rush hour there are peak 703 metro trains running only thing missing many commuters live in the suburbs or even further right now the metro system is being expanded again 3 new lines are under construction and for more in the planning stage they will stretch well beyond shanghais borders as we mentioned there are many workers here because its an Industrial Area also its very convenient because the subways right here. These investments are part of the countrys updated Economic Policy china put the brakes on major Infrastructure Projects for a number of years but things are starting to pick up again the ongoing trade war with washington means china needs to find ways to boost its economy. Kind on a deal and then. This current round of beslan spending is moderate and limited to hire your it aims to hedge against a slowing economy and the impact of trade conflicts and. Its not about boosting the economy and itself bennett a couple should be that should. Many older plans for more metro lines have been revived after they were previously abandoned design profitable and thats something commuters can celebrate. In business i think. Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah. Blah. Blah blah. Blah blah blah blah be an. Eye out economies cant function properly even in times of demand. Without skilled workers. With be inadequate housing. With food shortages. Scarcity is increasingly making things difficult for companies and entire economy whats causing it and what can be done to combat the problem. 90 minutes on d w. News live from her legs in chinas military break 6 silence on hong kongs on rest in what is being seen as a thinly veiled warning the Army Releases a video of an exercise in which arms troops and a protest could be zhang be planning to send him soldiers. Also coming up in the United States democratic president ial hopefuls face off in a 2nd debate front runner joe biden comes under attack on a number of issues including his position on women but he fights back our support a womans right to choose i support its a constitutional right. And germany takes flak from the United States after it refuses to join a u. S. Led nato mission to bolster security in the persian gulf all of this rising tension between our brawn and the west plus it was the single biggest act of resistance in nazi occupied europe during world war 2 the warsaw uprising 75 years ago polish fighters tried in vain to drive German Forces out of poland today poland honors their sacrifice. Im sorry kelly welcome to the program for the 1st time the chinese army in hong kong has condemned the ongoing prodemocracy protests in the territory the military leader. Said that the unrest should not be tolerated a remark that has many wondering if beijing will intervene with force it was also seen as a warning the army has released a propaganda video of an exercise in which armed troops quell demonstrations. You know killed a show of force by the chinese troops stationed in hong kong but this video released by the Peoples Liberation army is not just about regular military training. Also shows soldiers facing down demonstrators. The video will be seen by many as a thinly veiled threat of intervention by the Chinese Military in hong kongs internal affairs especially when a company by this. Message from the commander of Chinese Forces in the territory Major General chandelle shun spoke of extremely violent incidents happening in hong kong and warned that these should not be tolerated. Shunk was referring to the mass protests that have been taking place in the city for weeks often resulting in clashes between demonstrators and police they jane has become increasingly vocal in its condemnation of the prodemocracy protests. On thursday the chinese Foreign Ministry raised the prospect of military intervention. We believe the hong kong artists and of the piano will continue to be a stabilizing penner of hong kongs long term prosperity and stability. Also in the propaganda video hong kong erst expressing their admiration for the p. L. O. And their love for Mainland China this vision of a model hong kong citizen differs sharply from that of the defiant protesters who continue to throng the streets of the city. Lets get more on this story now were joined here in the studio by date of use china policy analyst Clifford Coonan so we heard it there essentially the military commander there in hong kong say that unrest in the territory should not be tolerated this is a threat isnt it i think so i mean nothing is said by accident in these situations and i think you have to do a certain amount of interpretation and in the absence of of very public debate. But i think theres no theres no doubt here that this is a clear message as you mentioned its a symbolic garson but its a pretty powerful symbol a 1000 troops and even though they kept a very very low profile its always had that element of threat there but in addition to you know the words that have been used weve also seen this video i mean this highly produced clearly intimidating video showing this training of armed troops quelling a protest in a place that quite frankly looks like hong kong what is the goal there you know i think even down to the color of the taxis in the video would show that the line towel and color taxis and everything is in companies which is also the language the chinese spoken in hong kong theres a very definite message here during the protests weve seen a lot of tear gas and weve seen sponge sponge grenades and weve seen rubber bullets but but its still been fairly low key standard antiriot equipment but in these videos we can see machine guns we can see heavily armored. Troops and its more like a war zone there you know climbing up walls using. As an equipment its its like a scene from the wolf warrior movie which was very popular in china a couple years ago which showed about the strength of the Peoples Liberation army as the Chinese Military is known so the message is very very threatening i think of this and one of the worries is that you know there is the potential here that we could see you know another Tiananmen Square style situation in hong kong with the military brutally suppressing these is prodemocracy activists that have been on the streets recently is that a plausible scenario do you think are those valid concerns i think given that were 30 years its 30 years since john a man that we had the big we had the big events to mark the anniversary. Obviously outside china i think its always at the forefront of peoples minds weve seen since extreme crackdowns over the years i mean ive seen the the Chinese Military action against them against weavers and engine jiang and then also in tibet in areas so we know what can be done but at the same time both of those while they were serious were very much crowd control rather than the use of extreme situation that we saw in tiananmen so in this year given 70 years since the foundation of the peoples republic of china when the government wants everything to be kept just so and to show a powerful and patriotic image i think theyre unlikely to do anything that would cause too much instability at the same time they need to keep things running smoothly in hong kong for the very same reason so who knows its a very delicate balance and at a very tense time especially in Hong Kong Clifford couldnt china policy analyst thank you. Its andy w. Talks with prodemocracy protesters about their run ins with the authorities in hong kong that is coming up next on news asia but 1st to the United States where democratic president ial hopefuls have clashed in another televised debate in the process to decide who will challenge donald trump in the 2020 alexion candidates disagree on a wide range of issues from immigration and climate to health care 10 potential candidates lined up but all eyes were on former Vice President joe biden and his name rival California Senator camelot heris. Joe biden had seen it coming come on a harris renewed her attack on the Democratic Front runner in the 2nd round of t. V. Debates. But this time the former Vice President was prepared and went on the offensive to the senators had several plans to the floor and anytime someone tells you to get something good in 10 years you should wonder why it takes 10 years if you know who says no talk about the facts of the plan in 10 years will cost 3. 00 trillion dollars if you will lose your employer based insurance and in fact you know this is the single most important issue since in the poll he drew a stinging response. So i think that you should really think about what youre saying but be reflective and understand that the people of america want access to health care and do not want cost to be their barrier to Getting Better with the higher deportation rates resume if youre a president absolutely not number one other candidates joined in on the attack and even the crowd got involved to criticize bidens track record on immigration many meetings i never heard him talk about any of this when he was his secretary. Please be respectful was very straight for the crowd. Biden did not get all of the attention the democrats are divided between centrists and progressives and the battle for the party soul will determine who will face off with trump in the 2020 elections. Many democrat voters are in favor of a lurch to the left. I think the time for matter is he has passed and as we heard yesterday high republicans are going to say that democrats are crazy and i am socialist whether they come with centrist or like just policies so now the opportunity to push the partys policies the democrats really want but in their desire to evict trump from the white House Democrats might be focusing too much on the incumbent 1st of all the president is a racist i think the biggest challenge is whether or not you want to position yourself as a person who can win the vote or a person who can defeat trump and it sounds like the same thing but its not a joining of people right now who are voting for democrats theyre looking for candidates who can beach front and that doesnt mean that theyre looking at their qualifications or even their skills that are even their issues. In a contest where personality tops politics front runner biden still holds many cards. More now were joined here by boris foreman political scientist at bard college in berlin so i mean we heard that there are did we see anyone who could potentially defeat trump. Well in a political system as divided and polarized as the u. S. Where not just the 2 parties are divided but the parties within themselves are divided difficult to tell i guess different electrodes well see very Different Things in those in those debates also i think the results of these debates are very volatile in 2 weeks time nobody will remember exactly how one of the candidates performed but were seeing the field closing in on fewer candidates at least and of course you know currently its a very polarized nation so i mean what would a candidate have to offer to the public in order to even stand a chance in 2020 thats exactly the split that we see reflected in the Democratic Party the answer isnt clear some say we need someone who can definitely go to the back to the status quo before trump that would be biden a moderate candidate others say well theres a reason for trump being elected which is which comes from true economic grievances social grievances and they need to be addressed and that would be the more progressive candidates so the answer is not all clear and even though the number of candidates that might have a real chance to run and campaign for the presidency is is is reducing this rift is still being maintained tucker theres a little bit more about the number because i mean this is the 2nd round of debates and they were too many there are too many people out there on one stage at this point too many people in the running how is that impacting the race so far well it can oftentimes its said to have helped trump become the president in the republican context where. A couple of president ial elections ago there were also too many candidates which which often helps more radical positions but its what were seeing is that in september the next debates will already have reduced but a lot the number of candidates we have 20 candidates right now only 6 or 7 are fulfilling the requirements of the. Of the Democratic Party to to actually show up at the next debate so i think in september that we will already be clear that there are 66 candidates that have a viable chance who do you think will still be standing worth more in the centers for sure bardem harris to jake and or work are the ones that are fulfilling the value of the criteria as of now but i mean a look can still change i think the deadline is august 28th for them to pass this test how many donors they have been home much hole high they rank in the polls but i think this is very much the kind of this were looking up chloroform and political scientist at bard college here in berlin thank you thanks 3rd get a quick check of some other stories making news around the world in yemen dozens of soldiers were killed after who the rebels targeting military base in the port city of 8 in the drone and missile attack took place during a military parade adan is where yemen saudi backed government is based who thieves who are supported by iran say that the parade was being used to prepare and attack against them. U. S. Officials have told American Media outlets that hums of bin ladin the son of slain al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in a military airstrike that was considered to be the successor to leave the terrorist group the u. S. Had offered a 1000000. 00 for information leading to his capture of the white house and the pentagon declined to confirm reports of the airstrike and Health Authorities in the democratic republic of congo say that a 3rd person has contracted a bola in the border city of goma the patient is the one year old daughter of a man who died of the disease earlier this week authorities in neighboring rwanda have closed the border with congo over fears that the outbreak could spread. And the russian army has been called in to help fight wildfires that are tearing through siberia and other eastern regions military transport planes and helicopters are hoping are being deployed to drop the water the fires are being spread by strong. Wins and have and gulf securely 30000 square kilometers of land. Youre watching news still to come on the Program Honoring a failed attempt to drive the nazis out of poland in world war 2 we find out what the survivors have to say today. First the u. S. Investors in germany has criticized chancellor Angela Merkels government for refusing to join a Naval Mission in the gulf Richard Grinnell said that america has sacrificed a lot to help germany remain part of the west germany is the biggest economic power in europe the success brings global responsibilities. Germanys foreign minister heikal moss has rejected the u. S. Request there are many support in securing shipping in the gulf germanys foreign minister essentially saying no last word on the matter probably but with its definitely a spotlight on how the drum Coalition Government these days is working mr maass the foreign minister we just heard is a social democrat and his party the s. P. D. U. Politician and we felt we could listen directly to what a great come come boy has to say. We are considering this request in close consultation with the United Kingdom and france. And we are doing this with particular consideration of our political and diplomatic goals and from this overall assessment a decision will be made. So quite confusing one coming at minister going that way the other obvious lead to another direction so one no one could ask what is the chancellor saying but uncle im not cool is not in berlin these days shes on her annual leave of service here in berlin take it for granted that the chancellor is supporting the stance of the social democrats simply to keep a Coalition Life and that means no drum participation in such a mission and in the meantime we have to mention that last week there was also a call from the u. K. This is of course before Boris Johnson took office as prime. Mr the u. K. Sensually proposing a European Naval mission to the gulf war where could germany stand on such a mission i think under a year of paean flak germany would probably find a row with the have been similar naval european let missions in the past one of them off the coast of east africa quite successful one and germany had in its vessels in that for 2 if you look at the german navy these days there are many many vessels undergoing repair or overhauling so its quite doubtful that germany really will be able to send ships into such a nation theres some speculation here in berlin that germany might do the reconnaissance flights for such a European Mission if it should be mandatory but this for sure would take some weeks and of course it has to be imagined that all of this is happening against the backdrop of increased tensions in the region fears of escalation we at we have to mention germanys foreign minister essential be saying that those tensions should be resolved through diplomacy just fill us in on how thats working out well germany together with france and the u. K. One has to stress here that the european powers want to keep the nuclear deal with iran a life and thats why germany doesnt step into such a military Mission Germany is afraid that this might easily convert into a wall no one wants and germany is still the drum government still wants to know to what end the u. S. Is putting its maximum pressure on to iran the drum stance is as we just heard the escalation and then please lets negotiate the nuclear deal security correspondent thank you. The governor of the u. S. Territory of puerto rico ricardo rose ojo is resigning tomorrow following massive protest up to half a 1000000 Puerto Ricans have taken to the streets in recent weeks angered by corruption economic mismanagement and the response to a recent hurricane the last straw appears to have been a leaked chat in which the governor voiced obscenity is about women gay people and hurricane survivors alexandra from naaman went to puerto rico to meet some of those who were pushing for rosario to step down. Hes well known for his hard hitting political and. One of the artists who have conspired to approach just in puerto rico he says he was called to be a part of the mill. Act. We wanted to celebrate the fact that we kicked the government out of office in only 12 days but i also want to motivate people to continue to fight and to protest look how many came here today. Were he words on his lyrics lyrics that have earned him a reputation as a verse a title artist p. J. Since who else says he writes about whats happening and what affects him right now its political crisis and the anger of the people caused by a Corruption Scandal and Text Messages which goes on to say you know disparage ordinary citizens as well as political. Look at all the messages in the form. When they came he made fun of. Community he did so many things wrong and he was very civil for everybody to so to like get the message like this guys wrong hes got to get out one of the people targeted by the governor was joined almost. He tells me he was angry but not surprised to find his name in the leaked text message just because hes always been critical of the administration but he didnt anticipate the consequences. Im very proud of what happened and really surprised by the extent of the civil commitment and here today the recourse for the most part or rather passive country. My arm and we did not take to the streets easily. And if we do the protests are small and you know we see the same people and groups you know my persona is a party bundle. Prout but also worried that real change that so many people. Rican seem to feel since gov will say you know instead he will step down thats why there are still protests taking place a new governor will soon be moving into this mention right behind me but the political crisis in puerto rico is far from over and the streets of san juan puerto say they want to continue their fight and they are hopeful that sooner or later they will get their leaders they believe they deserve. From someone who won we drive sell the protests attracted ordinary people from all over the island people like omar so to ford to new york and hes wife. The couple is still amazed by the sides of the crowds and their unity people a walk with the situation are going to do they more. Than explanations ball i dont think i dont think we are ready for example during the war nor orner from waterbury but people are are more aware of the situation they argue about politics at their Kitchen Table the governor successor and what should happen next and the posse right out says she didnt pay much attention to politics but the protests really touched her heart. Is an opportunity to pause for a moment and take a look at what was important back then and what was tragic for you. You take the time to reflect on it. The lost generation who have contact with those who were part of the uprising. Pleasured through kosky is one of 1500 living veterans 50000 people fought in the uprising logic still regrets that neither the russians nor the western allies came to the aid of the resistance fighters but what he does not regret was his decision to join the fight.
