Im bring to our viewers on p. B. S. In the United States and all around the world welcome tonight police in hong kong have finally retaken control of the Legislative Council building but only after protesters were able to storm and occupy the main chamber for hours police moved into the building after clearing the streets of antigovernment protesters with tear gas they were then able to enter the main chamber without resistance of the sharp escalation in violence comes on the 22nd anniversary of the former british colonies return to china. I want to bring in now roslyn adams whos been covering todays events for buzz feed age of rosalinds good to have you on the program you were among the protesters the entire day talk to me i mean what did you experience and did you get the sense too that we were looking at something that was planned or was this taking of the Assembly Chamber was that spontaneous. No i think humans got when that was. In the works you know i would say actually it started in the morning actually there were there was. One about a lot of blood was like its a building but are only 4 or 5 there were hundreds of people surrounded by the earth on a limb to say its a building theyre bringing in supplies. It wasnt something that happened need something thats had all day really. They were you saying air clean and sledgehammers it is definitely a concerted and there was i guess. The adult when they got into the chamber. Let me just it wasnt when when the the part as israel able to get in the chamber we understand they didnt meet any resistance there where there werent any Police Officers to mention when they got in were you surprised that they were able to just basically walk into the chambers that way. Yeah and so everybody here at the Legislative Council building you know they were tossing out chats like hardhack they were wrapping each other and so rather out that they were tossing out above everybody and saying if youre close to building a dangerous area theres hes right on the other side. And it looks like theyre you know im not sure but at least when i actually i think everybody was surprised that there was sort of a gift and often a body and but one thing that metal barricades lifted up it was just hundreds of people pouring in and i was there you shot. You know you can if they were able to get i didnt think that it would be hundreds of people moving in there is just like media destruction of everything and they were sort of like it was where the police were the police the police are coming but everybody was trying to share information and to get other state but there is you know death and destruction in that book on the side yet we saw what happened inside the chamber and as you said there were no police there and then of course at some point the announcement was made that the police were coming and that the police had to be evacuated then we saw a very Strong Police presence would you say this was a tactic a new tactic of the police. You know no i dont think so i dont think its a new tactic i think that you know i think that people are surprised at the feastings show up earlier actually thinking by the time the police did show up there were just a small group side the Legislative Council theres a lot of discussion inside the building on whether they should stay or whether there should. Be reports at least on the way so by the time the police came there was just a week if not some 20 people inside the Legislative Council and then there was the shops or at solidarity of like still hundreds of people outside the building. But the police want to be entire area cleared so one night it was around midnight. Thats when the police started using tear gas and it wasnt just about getting the protesters outside the building it was hearing area i mean it got really aggressive really mean like in a 1220. There. Was a good team and if you had me where there is a 2nd ton of tear gas and we understand that there have so far been no arrests to mention no arrests at all how do you explain that tactic by the police are you surprised. I mean i think that may stem from the fact that there were there were no police around when the protesters were inside the building so there are reports being reported so police are coming. But by the time the police did show up again there was just a small number of people inside the building so even though there was a lot of destruction there was still a pretty peaceful clearing of that area. So yeah i dont know if they had the opportunity to actually arrest people because by the time it showed up it was if people were mostly sitting gotta have time to the Legislative Council building yeah well hopefully well find out more because the chief executive she is supposed to speak this hour and speak to reporters as well so hopefully well be able to get some of those questions answered Rosalyn Adams we appreciate you taking the time to talk with us and for staying up so late we know its late there in hong kong thank you. Well heres some of the other stories now that are making headlines marketed the Afghan Defense ministry before gunmen babbled special forces the taliban is the most militant group has claimed responsibility government of using this incident to arrest opposition figures. The various Fire Fighters who battled the flames at Notre Dame Cathedral in april have been on urged by frances interior and defense ministers the cathedral spire and roof were destroyed but firefighters managed to save the bell towers and many works of art hundreds of firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes after the alarm sounded. The white house is condemning irans move to increase its enrichment uranium saying it will continue pressuring the country to change course earlier today the u. N. Confirmed that iran has broken the limit on your brain even richmond set by that 2015 nuclear deal on this is tehrans 1st major departure from the deal Iranian Foreign minister mohammad finds a reef his claim to breaking the deal limits is justified and hes accused coast signatories of failing to uphold their part of the pact the United States you may remember abandoned the agreements one year ago it has since reimposed sanctions on iran sorry says tehrans moves are about defending the countrys authority. But its only by illustrating authority that we can put the us in their place during negotiations if such talks are needed because we will never accept yielding to pressure but if someone respects us they will have our respect in return the world must talk to us with respect and not threaten the iranians. Are right im joined now by natasha she is a political scientist at the university of essex professor its good to have you on the show so what were looking at today a breach of the nuclear deal is this a Dangerous Development. Well its definitely a Dangerous Development and i think its something that European Countries in particular the European Union that have worked so hard to try to get the 20 could deal in place i was hoping would not have been i think they were working really hard behind the scenes to try to creating some sort of bartering system that would enable countries to trade with iran but it wasnt really set up that way it was only set up to deal with humanitarian goods and supplies and whatever they tried to put together at the last minute using sort of creative methods that just didnt work iran said it really wasnt a feeling its needs and so now iran has put europe in a corner where theres really not that much that europe can do it cant really go against the u. S. And i dont see it going against us and doing something to really challenge the u. S. But it also has to make a stance against iran and already the u. K. Has said that its figuring out what its going to do and that there will be consequences for this when he doesnt want to make such a strong stance that it completely leaves no option of ever returning to the deal i think they want to sort of quietly through their diplomatic channels or even overtly try to convince iran to not go too far of low levels of enrichment and so that they could somehow come back to the deal what do you make the is there a strategy here in iran increasing its uranium enrichment very demanding more work from europe and certainly they know that europe probably cant do more than its done already so whats whats in irans engaged here. Well i think theres 2 things going on i mean one of the things that you could tell from the foreign minister dr zarif statement is that iran wants to be treated with respect but that is almost more important than the result that they want to be treated with. Legitimately that they are tired of what they perceive to be u. S. Imperialism u. S. Aggression u. S. Arrogance and they just wont stand for what the u. S. Has just done and theyre willing to do that you know regardless of whether or not that leads to some sort of positive outcome the more strategic view would be that theyre trying to put enough pressure on europe so that europe will find some way to keep the deal in place but i dont know if europe 20 be able to do that under the current u. S. Administration for president im sure that theyre joining us from the university of essex professor as always we appreciate your insights thank you thanks for having me. There are many Unanswered Questions concerning europes migration policies today inside an Italian Court room this was the question posed should rescuing people at sea be a crime well the answer could determine the fate of the time she was captain of the sea watch 3 which was carrying 4 migrants rescued from the mediterranean when it entered the port of lampedusa over the weekend with permission and then hit a Police Speedboat now if convicted the 31 year old captain faces up to 10 years in prison. This was the scene in front of the Italian Embassy in berlin on monday crowds gathered in support of cowboy that i kept the captain in custody and to protest against the italian in terry a minister much more so. Than the t. S. A. Is doubling down on his stance against refugees and against private rescue operations. That. If he is a criminal on the criminal. The other 50 criminalize those who rescue other people all fight for humanitarian causes well then im a criminal to him and not easier if he just shouldnt be getting. Over the weekend German Foreign minister made his opposition to the captains arrest clear he said he would continue to push for her release and negotiations because italian counterparts do you know what. This kind of stuff rescuing people at sea is not a criminal offense its a humanitarian act this thats why i think ultimately anything other than a release will only lead to considerable irritation. For. By midday monday private advocacy groups had managed to raise some 750000 euros for the captain that amount has now topped well over a 1000000. Its money that they will need to cover her Legal Expenses to my currency rescued. Be resettled and a number of e. U. Countries its the 9th time germany has joined what people are calling a coalition of the willing something far from a long Term Solution. Or to talk about this im joined here in the studio by schaefer she is the deputy leader of Germanys Green Party we appreciate you coming in and the fact that were talking tonight youve been with the Green Party Speaks to the fact that this story has become so politicized why it has become so politicized do you think i think you have what we can see is that there are people that are saving lives from from people that were drawn otherwise and now they are like. Putting to today and maybe for this and tried as criminals and of course this is about. European values that theyre defending at the sea and we can see that there is so many questions connected with that thats the in teria politics of as germany but also and the European Union and that yeah that are complicated part of negotiations and you know there are critics who say that see what activists are playing into the hands of. People like the italian interior minister. He was spoken he has said this is like an act of war and he whats your opinion on this i would rather say that he is instruments thing that people from the see what screw for his populism and hes definitely not truly thinking about what his politics are causing there because of this politics europe and and italy and other states i like and going into into a situation where its called a political solution to let people die and we can never accept that also not as Democratic People at all but you except the fact that there is no clear immigration policy by the European Union when it comes to to what were seeing right now right i mean there is no answer to the questions that have been open for a long time i mean of course we re so its all for our Long Term Strategy for a long Term Solution treat all the saves of the European Union and if you like there is not this is not happening at the moment but there are other possibilities of course there could be a possibility too that the cities that declare themselves to save have us help the people and this is something that our own and terry and those that didnt do the block this offer of our cities which is what you hear from people like me who say the European Union has basically left us greece and spain on our own to deal with this but the people in Northern Europe they dont want to be bothered with it thats not fair. Yeah in this point. This is this is right and also i do and appreciate having these politics at all but of course we are in the situation now because the west and author european states they were not taking responsibility out of the situation and now this is also an effect that we see from from this years off taking no responsibility and i think what the whole found in term in this sense of the north and west european states could do they could say ok we dont drag a strait those people in italy we just take them right away and let them go into those cities that declared to them as have to be helpful do you think thats going to happen i hope but it didnt happen in the past all right the military for Deputy Director of germany is reporting this if we appreciate you taking the time to talk with us tonight thank you. Well European Union leaders are still deadlocked over another issue who should get the top jobs theyve suspended talks until tomorrow france and germany had agreed to support the same candidate for that keep position of European Commission president the dutch social democrat funds to much but theres been stiff opposition so that all of the e. U. Stop jobs are changing hands this year following europes parliamentary elections which were held last may. Good night sleep thats what journalists and the e. U. Leaders are desperate for after talks through the night brought no consensus speaking off to the marathon meeting german chancellor Angela Merkel said technically a candidate could have been chosen by out voting a group of countries but that she said would be unwise. Should really make an effort to find a compromise before as theyd like this to avoid tensions that could cause problems for many years were facing threats in many of the challenges and also say we should be careful and the way we treat an. Argument in this national in the 10 on the fleet. And young Franco German compromise could see that dutch social Democrat Friends to months had the commission but eastern European Countries and italy reject that idea. The stalemate is a disappointment for many leaders and prompted frances president to demands radical changes to the way the e. U. Operates and we cant be held hostage by a small group of members a days we need to find a way to make key decisions together. For now its hoped a new attempt at compromise tomorrow can bring what 20 hours of talks so far could not. Well fear of unexploded munitions has hampered efforts to put out a large forest fire in northern germany the blaze broke out in woodlands covering a former military Training Area 650 people were evacuated from their homes in the state of mecklenburg western pomerania Authorities Say they suspect arson. Smoke as far as the eye can see. Covering more than 4 square kilometers of forest this is said to be the largest fire in the northeastern german state of microblog western pomerania has ever seen. More than 1000 people have been forced to flee their homes and the residents of 3 villages have been evacuated. And have up we we have evacuated numerous villages at the moment were doing our best to keep them safe moment. And just get people were not just talking about putting out this fire rather were talking about protecting peoples lives and livelihoods and securing the region. Its dangerous work for the fun fight is and not just because of the flames but also because of potential explosions this was previously a military Training Area and tons of bombs and munition is still on site thats why firefighters are not allowed to come any closer than one kilometer to the blaze the states interior minister is calling for federal help with this illegal stuff this wouldnt us its federal land and the leftover munition and other issues go back many years now were seeing the terrible result the state cant be left alone to deal with this problem and that it will lessen the cost of the fire is not yet been determined and authorities are not ruling out a possible arson. Of alters this update from the town of looting thats where the fire broke out this situation here in this day and its difficult my if i said doing all they can helicopters are trying to extinguish the flames but really down on the extinguish civil anymore the scale is so low still only trying to contain what can be contained and protect the villages around a lot of people had to be evacuated already and several could follow and it is not insights. That was g. W. Lets return now to our top story that ongoing for democracy protests in hong kong the citys chief executive just gave an extraordinary press conference at 4 in the morning shortly after 4 in the morning lets take a listen to what she said the 1st of july 22nd anniversary of. The Hong Kong SpecialAdministrative Region we have seen 2 anti leave different public scenes one is. On the 1st of july we got a number of participants in a march the march was peaceful and generally orderly and this fully reflects the inclusiveness Hong Kong Society and the core values we attach to peace and. The 2nd scene that we have seen which really set a lot of people and shops a lot of people streamed use violence and vandalism by protesters who stormed into the Legislative Council building. Over a period of time so this is something that we should seriously calm down because nothing is more important than the rule of law in hong kong so i hope. You will agree with us that with these acts that we have seen it is right for us to condemn it and hope society will return to normal as soon as possible. Are there was the chief executive. Of hong kong speaking just a few. Months ago lets talk about that now with my colleague your region here at the big table so it is the middle of the night in hong kong right now and youve got curial am speaking to reporters so what do you make of what she said 1st of all actually some reports expecting that she would. Resign all make a big statement because its a full am in the morning right to have a press conference but then it turns out that she is just condemning the protests and saying that the protests this rough island which is what she has always been saying so. Repulsive quite a bit disappoint that the i mean for a means that the number of people who are going to see this happening live is probably going to be at a minimum you think theres a theres a reason for that. Actually i wouldnt say so because yeah because all this domain into parliament it went on until 2 am in the morning and before still awake activity. How do you think the protesters are going to view whats your lamb just said i think they. Were not they are not surprised because she has resigned so many times before also they really dont expect her to resign this time. But that it would just make protests those even more angry as you show because she is all responding to any of that a month and what about the police did today the police they were not there when the building was stormed and they were not there while the chambers was being ransacked you know we have graffiti sprayed all over the place you almost get the feeling that the police stood back and let this happen so that the world could see it do you think thats part of the strategy now well actually there were reporters asking the head of police force also in a press conference why there are no police stopping the people of poland he went around it and then not really makes thing why issue. He was saying that only if where in the parliament for the whole day and its just at this moment that they were a trick that you know yeah maybe yes on a clear answer and im sure that is one of the questions among others that will be posing as we move into tuesday church and thank you very much youre watching the w.
