California their numbers are growing faster as rents soar. The homeless have formed a community on the banks of the Santa Ana River but now the county has plans to clear away their tents michael j. Deal and the others plan to fight it but do they have a chance. Furley morning in Orange County the camp is slowly coming to life. About eight hundred people live in the tents here close to the dried out river bed. Michael j. Deal known as m. J. Has been living here four for about. Or yours or. This community is no different than the apartment complex or any other community. But you get the you get drug addicts you get good people you go bad people. Look different. But thats. Get out of life what you put into it if you want to be a junkie then youll hang out with the just. Want to be successful youll hang out at the yacht club. Nobody here can afford a roof over their heads let alone a yacht club membership. Its easier to live in the park than in the city where theyre always getting chased away and tents are hardly ever allowed theyd been hoping theyd be left in peace here m. J. Knows nearly everyone here im going to the tobacco place where steve over there gets are you going to go over here to the. Oh ill be right back a little get to that right now or a character caught up in the degree of that youre there little. By little m. J. Had found a new family among the people on the river banks but now his tent has been cleared away. And. The county authorities have started breaking up the camp officially for security and environmental reasons in jays gas canisters bicycle guitar and dog food are all gone i dont even know what they stored. What was valued to me may not a bit valuable to them. Hes hoping his belongings have been stored in this container on the dairy no locks on any of it. Although there is a lot im sorry shit about. That. When the police cleared his camp the stress and anxiety were too much for him he says he had a seizure and cant remember what happened he tries to find out some details from his neighbors. In two thousand and nine m. J. Was shot and wounded at the bullet is still inside his head. Off i never seen the injured or never heard the shot never seen the gun nothing. Paul remembers going to the. Alps towards the back door. With the kitchen. And i see the door jam of the laundry room coming up for the back door is the lights out. And if i got to go ill get that quick. I dont want to see a camel i dont want it built. Now m. J. Is unable to work hes dependent on medications to survive and now theyre gone. He often encounters locals who complain about the homeless situation. With quite a lot about a god like theres either i dont like the dog thats the problem thats what im saying is you need to open your eyes a lot more ive been homeless ive been down here thats why i say that person would ask and. Thats my opinion i thank them if you dont get me in trouble and being told to group in one that is correct i cant force it to others and stress it like you want to youre standing like this youre stretching your worth and your opinion i know im across the line irrationally but. You are in very right thats why i might in fact youre right i might i dont think i have. Had you know him a george of the people here are all doped up oh really i think you. Are. Second rate youre not is that further by jasmine. I do mostly say theres probably about sixty percent of the people out here that all are self and. Yeah right but the rest i dont know maybe selfinflicted but theyre all on drugs too there may be functioning drug addicts. With that were not all noisome i know that the majority i think the majority is one percent of drugs crime and violence are part of life here. But the homeless say they look out for one another. Stacey says even as a woman she feels safer here than on the streets. With the water thats water. She shares the tent with a friend she would have liked to stay even though there are not enough toilets or showers. Where are we supposed to go you know do they want to surrender their shops and on the sidewalks and on the street so they can arrest us there whats the difference. But i would i would think that they would rather have us all in one place than in the front of their stores and and parking lots and whatnot you know but i guess not. Human rights lawyers are helping the Homeless People here file a complaint against the county government. They argue that given the shortage of Emergency Shelter space their tents cant legally be removed. M. J. Goes to see a lawyer he knows well hamann only has agreed to help the homeless for free m. J. Asked for his help in getting his medications back i know without those bills my lifes in danger. To law thats the law until all of. Us are donald how are you i have an urgent urgent urgent favor to ask. Dino m. J. Hes your own speaker and ive got him with me what i need to ask from you is if you can call ted at public works and tell him that its life or death that he needs his medication his entire month supply is gone. The lawyer believes the county has violated their civil rights. And maybe they want everybody to be out of there its because they dont want people on the river bed and thats because first of all its the countys jurisdiction the county has jurisdiction over the Flood Control channel the second people are no longer on the Flood Control tunnel dots are the characteristics and so politically its not their problem. The county would not make any statements to the camera. M. J. Spotted a guitar in the Lawyers Office hes been a passionate guitar player since he was ten years old it brings me joy. The lawyer said he could spend the night in his office. The next morning like almost every morning the sheriffs are at the camp going from tent to tent ordering their occupants to clear the area. If any of them is on probation or even such a minor offense as this could get them arrested. I know you know that many cases. Yes. Many of the homeless given and packed their things but some stay put. I feel in a matter of couple years it had to be illegal to be over us so i feel i mean theyre leaving us with no options no place to go. We feel violated and whatever help. In the land of the free. And its its hard. The county grounds workers are ready to move in. When jay is back at the park. The calls from the lawyer have produced results the police unlock the container that he thinks may hold his belongings. And. That. To him james relief hes recovered his bicycle and guitars. Lighted. And even the pills for his dog are signed us. But no matter how thoroughly he searches his tent he cant find his own medication. Are ever going to. The authorities lock his things back into the container but they made sure his medication would be replaced. He wont be allowed to put his tent up in the park anymore under threat of arrest. So where does he go from here m. J. Relies on fate and god i know he left me here for a purpose maybe with only death by. I have no hard wind out what is reason for the give me extra time if that means what are involved. I will leave you. Soon after a judge ruled that the camp could be cleared but Orange County would have to offer the Homeless Hotel vouchers for thirty days after that most will probably have to look for someplace else and just hope theyll be allowed to stay.
