And right in the middle of it all is the beautiful old town. The rivers are both a blessing and a curse theyve made it possible prone to floods but for centuries the waterways were important trading routes the wealth brought to the city is reflected in its architecture. For example the festool borrows its almost eight hundred years old and one of the largest surviving many evil fortress complexes in europe from the top theres a great view over the city of three rivers. I thought i wanted to visit possible because of its special location and of course when im here ill do a hike in the Bavarian Forest a popular destination not too far from possible and heres whats also on today so. We make a detour to her gossip possibles our miles. Our week leave your video takes us to the island of course in thailand. And we accompany globetrotter steve finish to the famous ruins of much of beach in beirut. Cost so its not only been shaped by its three rivers this citys former rulers also left their mark with their magnificent churches and castles their story is told in the first obama was museum its closed during the winter and reopens in mid march but they let me inside for a look. This is where in twelve seventeen. The second was given the title of prince to show by the emperor the bishops of possible became the spiritual and sexual the rulers over the city for generations the first overhauls was home to the prince bishops. In the museum you can find out how puzzles old was built in the seventeenth century most of the houses burnt down so you tell you architects were called to rebuild the city in baroque style and thats how they designed. Publicity brochures describe it as the bavarian venice it is true with its italian a flair and a narrow lanes its one of the prettiest cities in bavaria. It has many striking churches monasteries there are about fifty in all. The bishopric apostle once extended as far as hungary. Since stephens cathedral is in the middle of the old town the fact that its one of germanys largest growth churches becomes especially evident once youre inside. Everything here testifies to the wealth and power of possibles prince bishops. The cathedral organ is famous with its seventeen thousand nine hundred seventy four pipes its the largest of its kind in the world. The town hall is also designed in italian. But the glockenspiel sounds early bavaria. Has fifty one thousand residents a quarter of them students. In the summer lots of tourists add to those numbers but in the winter the streets are quiet. The many cafes and taverns are typical of the old town. Cafe seimone for instance offers a large selection of cakes and handmade filled chocolates. This is the this is the old passant chocolate speciality old possum gold caps in its a truffle filling with. Said its special because the history of the gold caps is closely linked to pass out for strict is. Shaped like the gold colored caps wealthy women used to wear the gold cap chocolates are very popular as a sweet souvenir. Possibles town hall is one of the most beautiful buildings in the old town and a great hole to opportunity on the tell of it are markers showing flood levels over the past centuries heres a look back at some of the recent floods in the city. Personnel has had to deal with flooding throughout its history. The residents are used to it. If you move to paso and have a three rhythm so yes you know that sooner or later theyll overflow their backs as well so it was how it is. As it was as. Flooding hit paso especially hard in july nine hundred fifty four. The level of the danube reached twelve meters twenty. More than six hundred buildings were underwater for days the damage cost millions. To be areas on the banks of the rivers looked like a drowning city i now think of in. Eleven years later in one nine hundred sixty five severe flooding once again had passed so. You feel well enough the biggest flood wave came at four am if you have forces flying sandbags to the disaster area. In two thousand two large parts of the town were again flooded. And eleven years later came the next flood in two thousand and thirteen water levels reached twelve meters eighty nine. Boy it does it yes and friends it was a pompous first row of windows on this house and the next little bit i read balcony there was of course that means all these houses were half submerged so it was higher than it had been for five hundred years. They said from the name a game of. Money comes from donations and Government Support but despite that the city is put to the test every time. My next stop is the shop which doubtless once the home of the city executioner today it houses a cabaret and just venue and a restaurant during the twenty thirteen flood its lower floor was completely submerged im meeting. The citys tourism director and vidal and sudha who runs the shop which the house id like to know more about what the three rivers have meant for the city its residents and its visitors i once went up i did all this around as was completely underwater in twenty thirteen what was that like for you. I was in a slightly schizophrenia state. Depressed on the one hand because we considered closing the theater and the restaurant here. But on the other hand they have existed for forty years and the city gave us courage. And we received government funding. So we decided on to just a few days that we would keep going. And we said to ourselves if we are going to rebuild the bodies lets turn the whole thing around the way. Lets have the theater in the real basement and yeah up front make a slightly different establishment. So we were being creative at the same time. So it was a bizarre situation it. Was vets have a lot of affect of this venue what about tourism. Into this mess for again not truly so it take a direct consequence was that we couldnt provide the infrastructure. I mean some of our combinations in restaurants became unavailable. The consequence is that followed were actually very positive despite all that we had suffered. In august twenty third team for instance we had the best august ever. Because we found all the people who couldnt come when we were flooded and asked them to postpone their trips. And there was really a great deal of solidarity. Of course but by august everything was in such good shape that people could visit you as usual. Now just by august it took us four days we basically had two days where nothing worked out. Well it was only in the old town that nothing was working. Because thats where the water was. But of course we have lots of accommodations and places to eat in sites such as the cathedral which were accessible the whole time. So were the hotels the hotels on the danube have an interns right on the river on the lower branch of the danube and interns on the upper branch. And in all our Hotel Bedrooms are above the ground floor we live with this flooding cause after two weeks there was this lovely line in the newspaper that everyone still crying let us out is back. Stand on this is not hard impossible is something that its a few this area here is usually affected by the floods weve been talking about for just that where you have you ever thought about moving away from the city or at least the old tells. Us and what afflicts me just it startles not in the us you know because weve had plenty of funding and help to rebuild. Every new years eve at midnight we dont so wont send front of our house on the beautiful blue danube to appease the river was there so it stays in its mad and doesnt come to visit us. Since the as lovely as the three rivers are they should stay where they belong so shouldnt these that if you see a simple business will see think you have done thank you. Tess and we continue with our weekly beer a video then human as filmed her holidays on the thai island of course chung and sent us the most beautiful impressions thank you then here is your video. We want to know your favorite place to go on vacation send us your videos you can upload them at d w dot com slash travel. Im meeting in legal hot seat from the agong Artists Association hell be giving me a tour of pos also gotten a narrow street parallel to the danube where many artists have their studios. So gus is very popular with visitors especially in the summer. All the houses here date from the middle ages and our list of buildings. And. They have what special adulthood. This is not for the architecture of course we are to use also like to add a bit of color. And we want to attract their attention we have lots of studios and we want to try to make more accessible so we make an effort to thank. Everyone still ations and all these nations in one small space and it works beautifully. You can also peek over the shoulders of local artists for example at the studio. Of a painter and sculptor. Also hosts many exhibitions. I say goodbye to him and head for my appointment with another artist she also has a studio on her gusset in a vaulted building thats eight hundred years old. Sells hand painted porcelain. In the mail maybe you could show me how its done. To lace sure lets grab a piece. Armed with a brush we take a porcelain lit the struggle to has already outlined in the design for me so now im going to try and paint it like a pro. And then gently with the tips on this number first yes you have to try with the tip and use pressure to fill in the leaf this is. When i can add more no one wants to. But dont apply to thick otherwise when its fired itll get bubbles in it and come off. Ok so you apply it in several layers yes and with those layers you can also add tunes and light and shadow. That im putting in this little tidbit here. Ok look in here theres a little rubber eraser. One ill show you what to do. If you go outside the lines a bit you can use whats called a wipe out to remove this. Thing. Although the design is hand painted its dishwasher proof the paint is fired in an oven heated to eight hundred degrees silvias that one seen. And done. I should be proud right of course. And now from wintry passout we head to the other side of the blow peer group as you know all globetrotters to finish is traveling all over the world and regularly sent us an update of his experiences this time he visited the famous ruined city of much of. The last from through in this episode im going to show you around in cusco and the close call reaching one of my favorite areas in the country i will introduce you to an alternative much of your experience how youre ready to explore my most. Of the focus we need to start this episode here in the big urban center of course who presented a walking tour to introduce you to this beautiful city when i wanted to be on mass where you can find most of these turkey buildings and its also there id like to tell you a very good school was the capital of the inca empire from the thirteen to the sixteenth century and its still the Cultural Capital to root. To now were boarding the train goes and i was going. To. Say make it inside of much meet you and. We can see anything. Really interesting thing about income architect. Is that they build their houses so that their earthquake proof so theyre for climbing a bit which you can see for example over here and also at the game and all these houses down the street like it actually. Gets in the city about seven hundred people were living in the city all like first and second class people and it took about twenty one thousand people to construct much of people who were in the inca trail or just more than just impressive. Much a picture was divided into like three areas so yes there are bridges area which in the center. You have the have an area where like the house is worth and you have the common area the terraces would seem at. Least. Until today only seventy five percent of much you preach you are actually excavated so the other twenty five percent are still in process so theres more to come into next year against. The copper waiting for a few hours it finally cleared up the one up which was still has a little bit of clouds but they will also go away. Thats impressive. So when i picture we are standing on the much of peach will which means the engine the mountain and down there in the city ive just shown you. All right guys thats it from school and prove. My Journey Continues i have left paso and im on my way to the Bavarian Forest just an hour away from the city the region is a popular destination for hiking skiing and relaxing. To get an overview i asked for the Visitor Center in the hunter eisenman house and here i learned that part of the Bavarian Forest is a National Park when it opened in october one thousand nine hundred seventy it was germanys first National Park. In the Visitor Center you can learn a lot about the Bavarian Forest but the real exhibit is outside the forest itself. Because varian forest is a low Mountain Range one hundred kilometers in length on the border between varia and the czech republic. The National Park is in the south of the forest. Yet its allowed to grow as nature intended without human intervention. There are daily guided tours through the National Park. Human if anyone doesnt understand my original lower in the very end dialects please let me know this is all in. The box credo is to let nature of being nature and bring it closer to people like in the viewing shelters. That you can observe animals like links that vanished long ago but have now been reintroduced. Live here as well and even elk. For the fear of many thrilled we were lucky enough to see a lynx right up close and. It was fantastic to be able to watch them without disturbing the net and were. Outside the National Park the very end forest is power. For Winter Sports as the Mountain Range gets lots of snow in the winter at nearly fifteen hundred meters great auburn mountain is the king of the forest here youll find the regions largest ski area. Its a good lot of them back to it. The Bavarian Forest is especially popular with families tourism is one of the main sources of income for the regions inhabitants in the past it was mainly the timber and gas industries. To honor that the town of features a pyramid more than eight meters high made of ninety three thousand six hundred sixty five wine glasses its the worlds tallest crystal glass param and. You can find out how glass blowers work in the. Works. Once those are planted to europes royal courts to this day its still produces high quality class products. That treat top walk its one of the highlights of the Bavarian Forest its open all year round. The walkway extends through the forest between eight and twenty five meters above the ground. What does the forest sound like what animals lived here at seven learning stations you can find out more about the life and habitat of the forest for extra fun. There are other activities like balance beams and adventure trails. But the real highlight with the emphasis on high is that tree tower. This part of the walkway rises in a spiral circling around three ancient trees. At the top theres a viewing platform forty four meters above the ground. In general you have a great view from up here over the Bavarian Forest unfortunately not today anyway i enjoyed coming up here and this is where my tour of the Bavarian Forest and if youre a travel fan like me and like to check out new this nation every day then please take a look at our Instagram Account d w travel see you next time.
