But also on the show a special report from malta more than three months after the murder of an Anti Corruption journalist v. W. Meets local residents carry news on the fight against organized crime. And saving the olympics italy lends a snowmaking hand to make sure theres plenty of stuff on the slopes for the winter games in south korea. Bryan thomas a very warm welcome to the show. Just over half of germans think for all america should stay on at the conference helm but polls indicate her Approval Rating is thinking more than four months after Germanys National actions she still has not managed to form a new government and germans are losing patience the numbers are even worse for her potential Coalition Partners the social democrats germanys Largest Center left party is looking at its worst ever Approval Ratings. Germany social democrats need to regroup theyre still the second Largest Party in parliament but their standing has been flagging since the partys poor Election Results last september the latest polls suggest if people voted now chancellor Angela Merkels conservatives would score thirty three percent of the vote far ahead of the s. P. D. Which would get only eighteen percent and thats just four points ahead of the far right alternative for Germany Party which would score fourteen percent the business friendly f. T. P. Would score ten percent the greens and the left party eleven percent each the center left s. P. D. Recently agreed to formal talks with chancellor merkels conservatives with the aim of forming another grand Coalition Public opinion on the prospect is mixed and to this means a standstill nothing will get done its a lame compromise thing for i think its crucial for germany that the two parties unite said when i was hoping for a different result less than half of those polled forty six percent approve of a grand Coalition Government fifty two percent disagree but just over half still think chancellor merkel should keep her job fifty one percent of german surveyed felt good or very good about the chancellor remaining at the helm while forty six percent had a less favorable opinion of her leadership as a head i would have liked to see a change but you can. Support the chancellor we have no other choice. Both parties will meet this weekend for further talks but even if theyre successful in forming a coalition theres not much enthusiasm for it on the streets. Ok to talk more about this this morning were joined by simon young from our parliamentary studios good morning simon on ackles ratings are rolling steadily she still has fifty one percent Approval Rating though how worried should she be so i think she should be worried i mean we remember the days when she was up in seventy five and more Approval Rating shes come down steadily. And the problem for her is if you cant get the grand coalition together these sumption as there will be new elections now you might say well its obvious that angle americal still pretty popular and shes still a figure who you know is iconic really standing above politics in many ways. And so it would be obvious for her to lead to a party into the election but what were hearing rumblings in the conservative ranks that that might not be the way to go might be time for a new faces so i think you can say that merkel is worried and we see her last night talking about providing more money for all kinds of things possibly a hint that shes already reacting to the possibility of new elections are out there arent they closer on the american has the get to creating a new government to lower their Approval Ratings get this right i mean this is exactly what the s. P. D. Have been worried about that their core support and in particular the left wing of the party and the youth wing you know all more and more disaffected the closer they they hug and the americal and conservatives and thats what youre seeing in these Coalition Talks in a very very tough work being told by the s. P. D. Negotiates is trying get a couple of concessions out of there. Seventy of counterparts and a lot in a lot of people in the s. B. Did just saying its not really enough we should be doing this stay with us but he mentioned there their youth wing we think back to the heady days of the s. P. D. They were at numbers double what they are now alongside the conservatives whats been behind their steep and steady decline is it the youth that you mentioned them well i think its a number of factors and its been going on over many years is. A reflection of the changing German Economy i mean the s. P. Days a social Democrat Party with its roots in you know germanys industrial possed increasingly its possed and were looking at a new age now so its more difficult for this party is for all Political Parties to appeal but i think you go to look at other factors as well this this its really been the repeated situation of being in Coalition Governments where the political profile of social democracy doesnt really come through when youre sitting there and at the cabinet table an angle a mickle a conservative is sort of calling the shots ok simon thanks now were talking again later in the Program Thanks very much now saying in germany one issue very much on the minds of voters and politicians is Child Poverty new figures show the number of children threatened by poverty is on the rise nearly three million young people are risk youre in germany the effects are social innovation poor health and a lack of education. For this family being poverty stricken in wealthy germany means that although they have enough to eat and a roof over their heads when their children want something the answer is no. According to germanys definition the fleisher family is poor the parents are unemployed and live off of welfare which sometimes just isnt. Enough thats why they visit the Aid Organization arca almost daily here they can get a free hot meal as well as the feeling that things arent that bad because the other people who come here are also poor Alexandra Fleischer is sometimes embarrassed that her lifestyle has fallen to this level. One person to say i try not to let the kids know how poor we are we try to act normal but its sad that we have no money to go on vacation. No vacation no family outings no movies meals that arca leanne and Casey Fleisher have gotten used to the fact that theres not enough money to afford extras. Not that. I dont like the fact that my family is this poor i dont like to think about it because its all a little sad members of our. Management. And. So much. The Aid Organization arca is in the east berlin district of health. Here every other child lives on the edge of poverty in other words these families live off of a little more than half of the average german income. From market doesnt understand why in a country as wealthy as germany children still have to live in poverty on the fringe of society with parents who have lost all courage. In three dozen to the financial system. And thats simply disastrous for children who are born into these families. The flusher family wants to get out of a life of poverty and depression but their chances arent good despite germanys economic boom. I want to change things but its not easy i already know that when my youngest child is ready for kindergarten there wont be a vacant. C. Which would allow me to go to work. The effects have become a vicious circle because all too often in germany poverty stricken children grow up to be poverty stricken adults. Now if you look at some of the other stories making the news today the eldest son of cubas late revolutionary leader fidel castro has committed suicide cuban state media reporting the sixty eight year old Fidel Castro Diaz Balart has been receiving treatment for profound depression his death comes just over a year after that of his father it all castro led to before about half a century following the communist revolution in one nine hundred fifty nine. In abbeville he had straight to the german consulate and they want to get. The plot of the smaller according to the Iraqi Government i will be able to stay here for a week and spend time with a child every day so he can get used to me by the scandalous or. In the past weeks germanys government has been making efforts to bring back children of german i. A. S. Supporters for humanitarian reasons iraqi officials support this move there are dozens of cases some even involving older children the question is could they pose a threat in the eyes of the Islamic State they were future fighters Security Officials have issued warnings. And of the fastest user can there is a risk that these children come back brainwashed that they are ordered to carry out attacks so we have to consider that these children could be ticking time bombs off the nurses putting can on them david the type of minder and could take the kid doesnt cut it at least children arent perpetrators they have victims in the first place they comes at the circumstances and of their parents who brought them into a war zone and expose them to indoctrination and also has its top. Parents such as those incarcerated in iraqi prisons reporters from german broadcasters and the avidity and the daily newspapers the dutch at sites all were able to meet with three german women and their nine small children one lady agreed to an interview. On the internet do you look at i. A. S. Critically by now. Thats all i did not want to comment on that. Instead of talking about the terrorist groups atrocities she prefers to discuss her children who she wants to go to germany we have altered her appearance in this drawing. One that six zero there on hundred and six women and children living together in a room that is roughly one hundred square metres theres only one toilet and not a square meter is empty. There are matches is everywhere and most children a sick i mean they play with awful cats they collect bottle caps and use them to pay with cash. Back to eve rahim he is the first Family Member who with the help of the German Government is able to bring a child of i. A. S. Members back to germany on the condition of a d. N. A. Test he saw the taller in prison twice before taking charge of him the childs mother agreed to response departure he is fourteen months old now and apart from stories he didnt know his grandpa at all now he has received his german passport and is allowed to board the plane it remains to be seen how his past will affect him in the future all he knows is war and prison. He will be examined by doctors in germany i think with love and compassion you can succeed in anything but. The grandfather has brought in friends and family to help his grandson settle in and turn a victim of bias terror into a survivor. From the United States to south africa day zero is approaching fast and feeble in south africa dragging its arrival for months the country has been suffering under an extensive drought you can see the dramatic situation and more dramatic it is getting from the satellite pictures. How fast the water is falling in this dam over just several weeks cape town for example is totally reliant on reservoirs for its water supply to push back day zero the day the city will turn off the taps solutions are needed quickly. Queuing for one of lifes essential has become part of everyday life in cape town and conserving its a civic g. T. From february the first water consumption has been limited to fifty liters per person per day in germany the average consumption is one hundred twenty liters the only now having a plane been here for more than ten years this has been happening that now has been happening for so long the only planning now. Over the past twenty years cape towns population has doubled to four million and add to that the two million tourists that come each year and its no surprise that the citys will to made some skyrockets hassles one hundred barbie to tone it down ill take that or. Its tough but what can you do we all need the water its a large source. And we just go with a pro most residents are taking the restrictions in this stride us if it doesnt rain soon in the cities will use isnt drastically reduced by mid april the south african city could find itself in a desperate situation. And is back to brian and some good news and the run up to the Winter Olympics a bit of detente you could say christophe north and south korea will be sending a joint womens Ice Hockey Team to the Winter Olympics and junk shang south korea this month is a decision that the vast majority in the south have greeted as a step towards better relations but not everyone one woman has a very unique perspective on bowl young grew up in north korea and played for the National Team there her family defected to south korea and she went on to captain their National Team is more. At an ice skating rink just outside of Seoul South Korea thirty nine year old one boy young coaches disabled youth through the sport she can give back to a society that is welcome to it with a new life one grew up in the coastal city of chongjin north korea where she was considered a promising ice hockey talent herself i think it was that went on you know i think that once i was chosen by the government to become an ice hockey player i moved into a dormitory with the other players your computer but we all attended the same school. Even what about when looking only got a very early in the morning to turn around and. Those who lagged behind would catch up in night work out there on the way to. The age of eighteen one boys father decided to take his family and flee to south korea in her new home it didnt take long for her to earn a spot on the National Team during the asian games in two thousand and three she even competed against her old team mates from north korea but her expectations of a friendly reunion were soon dish for the wicket and i know to operate when we had to shake hands after the game and all the north korean players put their hands down and whizzed past me i was so embarrassed at the time. They simply saw me as a traitor theyve got you the fate of ice hockey player one boy young illustrates how the separation of the two koreas impacts peoples lives Many South Koreans opposed to fielding a joint womens Ice Hockey Team at the olympics still north koreas participation at the games could signal an improvement into korean relations with the south korean government promotes the upcoming pyong chung Winter Olympics as historic peace games seoul invited north korean athletes to participate in the female eye socket team billion id with athletes from the north and play under the same flag according to a recent poll more than seventy percent are against having a unified womens Ice Hockey Team viewing it as politicizing sports. Some also see the good side. And mainly positive about the decision i think the intent of the olympics is peace as the careers are divided it makes sense to have a unified team that matches the intent of the olympics but i know. There are rather negative perceptions about north korea like for their missiles its almost like north korea is isolated in the world however as we are the same tribe it would be good for the two koreas to get along. The number one downside is that some of the players who were initially qualified to play in the olympics are no longer able to do that and as the two teams have become one we are potentially losing out on medals. The unified korean team can demonstrate their team spirit when they face off against switzerland for their first group game on feb tenth. And we have some ballet for you now of a different kind members of argentinas National Ballet have performed on the streets of buenos aires in an act of protest against the countrys austerity measures eighty employees of the state funded Dance Company lost their jobs in december on the government budget cuts so the performers from the public display of artistic activism. This is still think im on the show we were not responsible that is the message from polish lawmakers about the holocaust well tell you about new polish legislation that has outraged israel. Also coming up a crusade against corruption. In malta more than three months after the murder of an Anti Corruption journalist means local residents continuing her fight. Welcome back youre at the the view news live from berlin our top story at this hour a new poll indicates german chancellor all im ackles Approval Ratings are sinking and the numbers are even worse for her home for Coalition Partners the social democrats yes peace corps its worst ever Approval Rating coming in at just eighteen percent. Ok lets take a closer look at some of those numbers now and how germans would vote if an election was held today on americas conservative bloc would get thirty three percent thats the same result as in january the social democrats so they lose three Percentage Points sliding to that dramatic all time low of eighteen percent the far right alternative for germany well that gains one point its at fourteen percent just four Percentage Points behind the us the day the probusiness free democrats theyre at ten percent the left party and the greens level at eleven. Simon young our Political Correspondent is here to talk about this now good morning dan simon what do these numbers tell us about the mood among german voters right now i think the numbers suggest that people are impatient to see a new government and theyre pretty unimpressed with whats been agreed between the two largest parties so far and some other numbers in these polls by the way nearly two thirds of germans say that they think important domestic issues are being neglected because these talks are taking so long and a similar numbers say that germany is losing influence in europe as a result so you know theres a lot of pressure on the politicians to get on with it yeah in berlin we sense we sense of more than most other places everythings on hold right now until this new government budgets are out there you know the s. P. D. Is that this is sturrock low that thats really a huge story today theres a used rebellion inside yesterday against the leader particularly Martin Schultze should a new generation take over is it time for them well it could be a lot of people in the s. P. D. A lot of people blame militant schultz really for the position the party is in they say he didnt capitalize on the advantages that he had the election and hes the reason you know theyve done so badly and that theyre continuing to lose support they dont see him as the man who can renew the party is a lot of people are saying is desperately needed particularly by the way if he insists on getting him into a ministerial job inside and americas next cabinet theres been a lot of discussion about that with some people saying you know it be better for him to keep length away from the government so that he can criticize it ok the one part of this making a lot of political hay out of this right now is the far right do they have three big chairs of the three big committees in parliament including the budget right now and theyre saying theyre nipping at the heels of the s. P. Day their party chairs as they want to replace social democrats as the. The Second Biggest Party in germany whats their strategy to do that well they believe the they can appeal to mainstream voters more effectively than the two large parties in the Election Campaign their strategy was to talk about migration and their concerns about that in the concerns that they saw mung many germans that issue seems to have waned a little bit in the public mind so now the a. F. They are in particular talking about islam again what they see as the threat the incompatible nature of islam with german values as they say but quite apart from all that you know just at the moment during these long drawn out talks only of steve go to do is sit back and say look you know the old parties they cant get it together slow they are inefficient they dont work ok its fair to say right now the biggest political question here in germany is as weve been discussing what is the country going to get a new government and the go station of the americans can serve as a social democrat should be over this sunday is a bit optimistic the infant test the map poll asked how germans would view another grand coalition between the parties it is a mixed picture forty six percent saying their view of it is good or very good a majority fifty two percent are last positive or even say it would be a bad i d. So what do we make of that simon how much support is out there what are germans saying about the grand coalition that dont really want to look like well there was never that much enthusiasm for it and of course there was attempts initially after the election to have a completely new kind of coalition involving free democrats and greens but that didnt work out so people have come back to the grand Coalition Social Democrats conservatives as just the default option i think its interesting the s. P. D. Voters in those numbers if you break them down a very split the much more split them with conservative voters the other thing is the end of last year you know support for this idea was sixty one percent so its dropped back massively from that just in a just just over a month really and also if you compare with last time around when there was a grand coalition that was put together of in a few weeks of talks in support for they clear the government grew over that period steadily until the government was in place this time its fulling as the talks go on they are less and less and that yes is there any chance for either the s. P. D. Or the city to turn that around or are we are on a downward trend now well its hard to say look if in the next few days the government comes together i think that the sense of relief you know and that will be the most important thing people will then you know look at this new government see what its able to do theres been a lot of detail in these talks about exactly how you know germanys going to proceed pensions education digital agenda all sorts of things like that you know its not the stuff that really fall as people up but germans do want to see a government they can get on and its important to a lot of people might might not be on a large scale but different groups are very interested in all those issues they want the answers to their questions we have time for another finding voters are also asked what they think about chancellor merkel staying in office for another term a majority fifty one percent of the respondents saying it was good or very good forty six percent opposed to machall remaining in office as chancellor. So im in support theyre eroding steadily is this a trend that can be reversed well again you know i think it very much depends on this question of whether the government comes together angler medicals standing has full over the last few months since the election and and indeed it during the last year olds so i think theres a sense that you know this is her last films to do it as i was saying earlier the the assumption is that she would probably lead her party into a new election if a government cant be put together but people are beginning to question more and more openly whether she will be the leader of that policy for much longer and so you know these are the these it may be the beginning of the times for medical ok simon thanks so much for those comments this morning looking into that for simon young for us were on to news from poland now polish a lot of polish lawmakers that passed on holocaust bill has been sharply attacked by Israel Parliament voted in favor of legislation that makes it a crime to claim poland or its people were complicit in nazi war crimes now poems ruling parties as the bill is needed to ensure that polls are recognised as victims of the nazis a foretaste of the fallout from the new polish holocaust bill israels ambassador leaving a meeting with the speaker of the senate in a hurry not making nice. The vote in the polish senate was decisive fifty seven in favor twenty three against two abstentions but it may not be the quick fix the government would like. Poland as long struggled with the legacy of nazi run death camps on its soil like auschwitz birkenau where more than a million jews and others died poland was one of the countries most affected by nazi atrocities and many here feel theyve been unfairly branded as villains. And it hasnt gone down well when american politicians among others refer to polish death camps for many years history has been falsified it has been presented in a false way we did this for the poles for our dignity and truth. But the bills passage comes on the heels of holocaust commemorations at auschwitz even though polls werent in charge of death camps on their territory some poles helped the nazis in their goal of killing all of europes jews many fear that the new bill will brush this history under the rug. What does this say the jews who killed. The polish people he saw. And what others tell you my family my great britain. And dozens of others of my Family Members who died did that all of this didnt happen theres been Strong International pushback to the senate bill the u. S. State department has expressed concern about the repercussions this legislation could have on poland Strategic Interests and relationships including with the United States and israel. And israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was even more forceful. No circumstances will we accept any attempt to rewrite history or limitation on truthful Historical Research to become law the bill must still be signed by polands president meanwhile security has been increased at the Israeli Embassy in warsaw amid fears of protests by nationalist polish groups. They were happy to be joined now by susanna from the absalom school for heritage memory and material culture shes been doing research on contemporary european memories is also a polish citizen good morning to you thanks for being with us today israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying this legislation is trying to change history and deny the holocaust is that right now its not right its not denying the holocaust but in fact its denying a very important part of its reality. They were researching the whole Golden Harvest young girl sent it and im going to introduce the concept of very fairies of the holocaust can you repeat. Of the whole account refreeze of the holocaust ok and this concept actually refers to a reality of encounters between the jews. Jewish local population which was decisive for the fate of many of the of the victims of the holocaust wasnt there for the professor because of the holocaust wasnt there for the poles take the case of poland who actually typed into the world around the ghettos who. Denounced the jews who murder their very often and actively participated in the last face of the holocaust which was the face after the equation of the ghetto and when some of the extermination comes actually already ceased to operate and the hunt for those in hiding was undertaken probably a lot of more jewish victims of the holocaust would have survived how important is it to understand the peripheries of the holocaust to understand the holocaust in its totality i think its crucial because we have to remember that the holocaust did not play out in social vic vi came in all countries throughout europe in friends in italy in norway in sweden of course the. Activities the policies visit occupy or whether the country collaborated officially or not were crucial for the ways the holocaust played out ok no im deposed a president under a dude says he was flabbergasted by netanyahu as response he called it a violent reaction you know if this bill signed into law by polands president how do you see it impacting polish and israeli relations i think its clear by now that the relation between poland will be. Affected by what is happening and not only with israel we have a very decisive very strong reaction from the state Department State department we also have ukrainian diplomats and politicians reacting to to the below so its not only about polish israel and the reaction of relations but also about broader position of poland fees of the other european and western long western countries but i think that the whole Debate Centers actually about the diplomatic and political dimension of the bill but we should focus more on how it will affect scholars how it will reflect affect public debate on the holocaust in poland and also for out europe ok you mentioned two things there the u. S. State department and discussing the holocaust your state department is saying this polish law will affect free speech and and research into dollar houses where you do see that thats only because you are to go to a scientific and a to stick practice are exempt from from being investigated. In relation to the bill but we should ask ourselves what happens with dissemination and bringing the research into why theyre public what happens with holocaust survivor steps to monies when they actually referred to violence perpetrated by the poles ok so thats an issue for you but the but there has been an expression by by both the polish and his. Really Prime Ministers to have a diplomatic dialogue about this do you think that could help smooth the waters or is it too late if this is bill signed into law in twenty one days well it was already even though there was such outrage coming from from various countries it went through and it was passed by the senate i truly do hope that the president will react to what is happening but im not sure we can actually count on that ok thanks so much for being with us today zuzana so weve gone from them so school for heritage memory material culture bringing some light on to this issue thanks very much thank you in other news today three men have been charge of the killing of a maltese journalist investigative journalist last october daphne dizzee murdered by a car bomb sparked International Outrage undue attention to corruption that shed been revealing and reporting on on that island nation three months after her death did abuse barbara vais will travel to malta to meet those carrying on the murdered journalists legacy. Three months later a small group of women activists tried to engage the public in their fight for justice and change they come regularly to the site of the bomb attack to canton ohio a person a journalist was murdered was assassinated because of what she knew and because of what she said and if this isnt a sign for the rest of us to shut up then i dont know what is and thats the last thing that you know if you can take away our freedom of speech. One man lives in a village near the camps of little hes well aware that he cant hide in the small island and he too feels the climate of intimidation and of your spirit is a state where the infrastructure the institutions of the state appear to service the interest of crime. Of justice and yes we do have that. Small group of people trying to bring change to malta but theyre facing strong resistance from local powers underneath the picture perfect surface lies a political symbol of intrigue and corruption. Our correspondent barbara vasovagal that report for us joins us now from our brussels studio barbara good morning to you matt investigative journalists while putting that report together do they feel in danger do they feel that theyre threatened perhaps even being targeted. They do indeed cry and some of these people feel as if they had a target on their breast really because they have reasoning is a really well known figure even internationally known figure like definite go on. Can be murdered and then nothing really happens because the people behind it is still unknown and investigations seem to have stalled what about them anybody could blow them up or put something in their food or sort of wait for them in the dark at night so yes theres a feeling of insecurity and the times of malta the biggest newspaper on the island just surveyed forty percent of maltese people said they have no trust if they know about corruption if they witness corruption they dont trust the police they wouldnt dare sort of going to the police because they fear of repercussions so its a really negative picture of barber trust is not only an issue for journalists you know after italys years of murder the family or family refused to meet with the Prime Minister of public anger has been growing against the Political Class can you describe for us the mood in malta right now. There is a strong mood of anger still going on because the feeling of impunity on the island is very strong i mean there has never in decades being a politician that sort of put to trial that had to go to court that was accused of even the most serious crimes everything is always swept under the carpet even murder and that is a sense that rages many people on the other hand we have to see the i havent split because there are also many people in malta who profit from all this illicit money sloshing around from hendo from the government and so we really see a very two sided picture about this Civil Society and people are trying to organize resistance they are furious indeed is it a question of the institutions of the state that are so important to combat this d. G. Dishy area and the police especially being too weak. Absolutely the institutions are just badly organized there is too much power in the hands of the Prime Minister he can for instance just imagine he can appoint judges so there is no real separation of powers and thats one of the mainstays of democracy so the i havent sort of functions in the way of a closed shop the government can do what ever it wants and this last government of Joseph Muscat is doing the most really sort of tighten its grip on power and there seems to be nothing really or very little that can be legally or fishley or by the media done against that is there a role then for brussels for the European Union to come in here you know its indicated its unhappy with whats happening with the judiciary in poland for example could it apply pressure in malta. It could it has looked away for too long and it needs to apply pressure not the european problem and really is on this case there was a hearing last week in parliament was the maltese Justice Minister and afterwards the parliamentarians wifi areas because they said he didnt answer any of our questions he was just sort of being very often so you know nothing everythings fine and dont worry about us so they will pursue this case its going to take some time but this is really a boil that needs to be lanced in the side of the European Union barbara vais obara thanks so much for your report and for your insights this morning barbara visa for us in brussels well we have some sports for you now when the Winter Olympics get under way in china next week theres one thing in particular that many of the athletes would be able to do without every one of them actually snow there is no guarantee that Mother Nature will play along she doesnt own things so organizers have drafted in the help of some experts from the european alps to make sure that the snow slopes have plenty of snow. Outside subzero temperatures inside their cooking soup and in the center of the action william or knife from italy helps manage the team that provides the artificial snow and. Got no for me we had a meeting with the Olympic Committee to discuss safety of the heights and we were told to remove the snow makers as are usually outside the dramatic i was following up on phoenix park will be the venue for the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events at the twenty eight thousand Winter Olympics in two months machines have produced up to seven metres of new snow now the machines have to be removed. The athletes are starting their training but one machine is only communicating in korean today where. You can you could change your engine turbo. Heard.
