Nigeria shalen and i will be bringing you the latest exciting environmental stories from all over africa and europe now heres a bit of what weve got lined up in ghana illegal gold mining is endangering not just the land but children and animals well tell you why. In the eco africa interview kenyan environmental activist and im a cultural policy expert coming in guy talks about the impact of Global Warming on Food Security and how region looking at fossil a woman whos project is bookbinding many villages with renewable electricity. Gonna run some long africas largest gold produces many young people in the country have taken up gold mining often illegally the activities of the small scale miners the socalled golomb says endangering the countrys environment and not through resources polluting reversed and found land as well partners of nature africa a local ngo is carrying out forestation and we have a nation of sites destroyed by the golomb says activity the aim is to restore the natural and fragile state of the land and improve the livelihoods of people in the region see how this works. No you cant do much. Every morning. And hes full of it i guess what of this more plantation he works as a volunteer for the tree nazri a common aussie close by the distant capital who must see these trees symbolize local peoples hopes. Only a few months ago machines were rampant here he got a Gold Prospecting them in it in the dance kit for he has to go to ghana the gold rush lived in its wake. That but most of nature africa in general is nothing the ravaged countryside back to life its volunteers feeling the abundant beats planting rubber trees teak or mahogany they are instead. Wants to make the land are able again put money youre forced to move farmer says these fledgling forests we offer our fresh start but those who once planned here for the you might. Need to leave the peats so either of these are came here then you reclaim it after the reclaiming you dont know how to rejuvenate it heiko how coverage when its the region it through by planting like right now after that sadr mahogany and mary off from do antic as well so right now almost four months you started the plants and and is doing very well so is this in this area. That tendency to become a forest in the near future. The mans illegal gold mining alum say meaning gather in sell most of the workers most of the gold out on the banks at this excavator repeats the ad is rigged out with water until it leaves the gold dust settled at the bottom. And anyone gets rich doing that middlemen rake in all the profits. In the process involves much yury toxic middle poisons the fish in the us plants weed out the polluted water mix people heal. And it is used water filled pits can be lethal traps. If. There were instances where children fell into those peaks and died by the time we came the person was theyd had to drain the water to recover the body seven people have died in this way here on this component of the malice and lying. In their exports comes from the gun and government which has just banned private old prospect. In future it says good production will be strictly regulated. Young people are also being offered retraining programs to help them leave the industry. And the destruction it cost still remains pretty foresting of us hope that. The immediate benefit is for people within this community who do not have jobs they will get jobs because of these trees the latics is used to make robots and when it is much the treat self going to be cut for timber even the government will benefit. So far the project hasnt gone beyond the pilot stage found out of been before instead i have a but not of nature of the plans to repair all of venice divestiture the gold mining biggest city. And now over to you sharon on the other side of the continent a man in uganda has built his own fitness device he is sixty four years old and once a stay in shape thats understandable but what i dont understand xan is what it has to do with the environment well in this case it has to do with clean energy they must see in which its inventor calls johnny is not only good for his health its also generates electricity to meet his daily needs lets see how john people is doing his beats but then barrowman. Pedal power. Nearly eighty percent of ugandans have no access to the power grid. But john cooper has found a possible solution. He likes to stay fit by riding his exercise bike. It struck him that if you connected it to a generator he could produce electricity. Three hours of pedaling yields up to five thousand watts but it only takes a few minutes to run his t. V. For hours. So. The electricity is stored in a battery. So its ready to use whenever needed. He can also ride the bike to pump water. Says it could be installed across uganda a benefit for everybody in the country. If you like that but. If you are also doing your bit tell us about it. Isnt. Web site or send us a tweet. During. What are Climate Change and forestry have to do with each other its a good guess today well tell you catherine. C g i r a Global Research partnership for food secure future in nairobi how many goals how to protect the most vulnerable in society from the effects of Climate Change and how to convince people in africa that they themselves will have to take action against Global Warming we caught up with the kenyan environmentalist in they will be. Limited to new guy what im going to tell you about the impacts of Climate Change is going to be focusing mainly on the Greek Culture sector and in riches and also how this affects the Food Insecurity nutrition. Components of the country. Can no longer predict when the rain is going to fall and this has affected our farm in activities so the farmers do not know when they can farm when they can plant their crops when to harvest and. This has been has been quite a challenge for the farmers so the impacts have become more extreme so when the trains the rains have become here when it becomes dry the dry seasons are now becoming and theyre lasting longer and all these have have an impact on the small holder farmers and also to some extent the commercial farmers. Generally mean you find that women have a huge role to play in terms of taking care of the families so. Who even when you look at the smallholder farmers in kenya you find that most of them are women to some extent also youth but in this particular case when you look at it from the women perspective we find that theyre the ones who bear the brunt of Climate Change for example if theyre the ones who have to provide water for their families you find that they have to go walk father to look for water to get their back to the family we have the issue of rural urban migration and in most cases its the men young men all the men who tend to migrate so they leave their women behind and the women are the ones who have to continue to keep going to the agricultural practices. Eat and. To get out the other such as additions to to. To test livestock sheep and goods that are also resistant to Climate Change and also can be a source of foods we also encourage them to do. You know to plant different kinds of crops on their farms so they have a diversity of crops so if one crop field at least that able to rely on another crop as a source of food. You eat. In most cases you find that they have a close relationship with nature and also so theyre able to give you know in terms of indigenous and local knowledge women they can be our sources of this kind of information women are also not sharing in nature theyre also good that i dont doesnt adaptors of climate you know claim its my technologies and practices so we find women are very. Willing to learn new things so and they share information so if a woman attends a meeting where she goes back home well find that shes good and then. Even the children what could have transpired in the meeting its important to involve them in you know when were discussing Climate Change and shaan Climate Change we to get. To meet. A great woman with a Great Mission that will hopefully resume it in africa and the world and that includes europe because farmers there are facing big challenges now you can tell us more yes and i will try in germany alone mass livestock farming produces two hundred million cubic meters of liquid manure every year it is used as natural for it lies on fields and its transported a long way by trucks and ships to regions that fertilizer which is not only costly but bad for the environment so people are thinking about how to better integrate i mean more husbandry and crop growing that would help bring the natural cycle of food and fertilizer back into balance and there is a way that signs can help. Farmers across europe might want to use free of charge liquid manure instead of expensive artificial fertilizers but due to declining livestock breeding it has to be transported from farms over considerable distances thats where these researchers and stood guard come in theyre developing a technique to make manure use more efficient they want the advantages of natural fertilizer without its ecological drawbacks really and head simi valley could manure contains a lot of water and transporting waters expensive on the other hand there are regions with an insufficient supply of nutrients so we have the idea of extracting the nutrients from the liquid manure and then transporting them elsewhere to other regions you want to put. The team has already conducted successful tests in a pilot facility the manure is slightly acidified to help separate the nutrients from the liquid. Then the solid elements are filtered out. First the valuable phosphorus is extracted in the form of a phosphate salt. The ammonia a nitrogen compound is turned into the fertilizer ammonium sulphate. See just how the method works is of course a trade secret. The end products are a clear liquid and an odorless powder. Weve managed to obtain products from the liquid manure this is the money which is a nitrogen fertilizer we also phosphate salts and we can also granulate these minerals to make them easier to apply on fields. Its convenient for the farmers but what about the quality of the recycled fertilizer. Its a question answered by a team at the university of. They use a wide range of mixing ratios to conduct a greenhouse experiment under controlled conditions. You know how we have hide the plastic fertilizer from the manure to a variety of plants in this case ryegrass we compared the effect with conventional phosphate fertilizer as as a reference we use a control pot with no fertiliser and here you can see how similar the plants look like theyre bigger and greener than the unfertilized ones that included now to us do you want to do that however was merely the first phase after all farming doesnt just take place in greenhouses. Yeah. We did field has maize and winter wheat on here and hohenheim and with projects partners in spain under different climatic conditions in those cases the recycled manure worked just as well in practice as mineral fertilizers. So it could just be a matter of time until Livestock Farmers take to recycling liquid manure the specified on the lawn some method is not yet profitable in terms of the product of india that are but bearing in mind how much money farmers spend on disposing of liquid louer it is an investment that will pay off the substances in the soil and groundwater. Well about forty four million tons of electronic waste is generated every year. And a lot of it ends up in africa not only that its often illegally trade at and that poses a threat to the environment and Public Health rwanda wants to change that the government has opened up a pilot recycling plant by electronic waste well guess what thats just the beginning. When the computers life comes to an end its remains end up in a press the new electronic waste plant in books or in rwanda has already processed lots of dead computers and theyre aiming to boost their output. The Rwandan Government has made recycling a priority it has gained a reputation in africa as a pioneer in the field of Green Technologies and has its own Green Climate fund it provided financing for the waste Processing Plant the fund invests in both public and private projects that aim to develop a sustainable economy and rwanda was one of the earth green funds that was set up in africa and rwanda was one of the first countries to be accredited by the Green Climate fund which is the International Climate finance institution and really the fund is a demonstration of rwandas commitment to growth environmentally Friendly Development and is a really tangible this facility is a really tangible example of that and not all of the computers sent to the plant and being scrapped recycled components have so far been used to build some three hundred computers which were then donated to schools across the country the recycling plant certainly wont be short of work rwandans own some one point five Million Computers and one hundred fifty thousand t. V. Sets the facility has already processed one hundred twenty tons of waste says project manager alleviate. The. Commissioning or demosthenes and so on so we have been able to collect. Those one hundred twenty but in the next period thats where we visit to court its a lot of want it is. The facility doesnt just recycle scrap products it also creates jobs there are more than thirty collecting points in rwanda and that work staffed by some two hundred people and its the public place along then the recycling program can grow to create works one hundred small. One of the challenges. Is limited awareness people are not yet aware because its a new facility and. There is more touch meant on the kitman people dont want to do it is if its a computer that you have been having from. Your first computer that you dont want to add to it is it but its very dangerous to keep also those. And those. Other companies are also on board theyre interested in the rule materials inside the Computers Like the copper in the cables so mellotron it components on materials like plastic can also be reused or recycled the Rwandan Government is trying to boost computer usage this factory is response to the Environmental Impact of the digital economy. And so on this show here is another positive example of how to help the environment and the people of a country thats sign from book in a fossil a very impressive story right sharon absolutely we met with prince says yes hes a real princes haue foundation in booking a fossil brings remail energy to towns and villages this Solar Energy Devices that are distributed around the country called my lights we visited the woman who is making it all possible and improving the lives of many families eco hero of the week. Cullom believe its a three hour drive from book enough asos capital were going to go. Just a few years ago studying at night was very difficult here. Now every child in a small town has a solar powered light thanks to princess opposite the founder of a social enterprise that facilitates access to sustainable energy. And shes a popular figure. It would look dont forget that you are the best you are the best the best. Player that. Most people here are able to pay off the socalled mama light in six months that with. The princess says the one thousand lamps are transforming life for the children here. It is so far whoa secret the aim is that these children who have to go barefoot to school should learn that they can be proud that they can make it and they shouldnt give up no matter what difficulties they should be if i can do it they can figure. The one. Last time i told them look i came by car if you work hard then youll build roads and maybe even airfields and land on them if youre here at the. Princess abse a once to see how the kids are getting on. The childrens grades and improved thanks to the seller lamp says that teacher. When we got the lights we were very happy. And used to have children doing our homework by torchlight and when the batteries ran out or the torch broke they couldnt continue working though. But since getting these lamps when i asked them a question about what weve learned of their own shadow. Then suddenly they can all tell me the answer. Prudie. In rural booking office so most people live from live stock or arable farming. Most of the work is done by hand. Very few people here can afford electricity there are just a couple of generators. Without the mama lights such close work would be difficult thanks to the initiative you can also see small solar panels hanging at almost every window they recharge the lamps. The lamps can provide light for eight hours with one charge some last even longer it allows us to do what we want the children benefit in particular the women the mothers are really happy as are their fathers. The lamps really made a big difference for immigrant. Printers abseiled decides where to distribute for solar powered lamps in consultation with village leaders and. There are already hundreds of thousands of mammal lights across book enough fossil and there are more to come. The princess came up with the idea when she was traveling with her family. That. I was in comes the village with my daughter cammie whos now twenty and it was pitch black and i thought to myself that with the technologies we have today with solar power for example we must be able to adapt them to different contexts and change something we just have to work at it and then it just went click with the. Princess arbs is often on the road at home and also internationally as the president s special envoy for Sustainable Development goals and Climate Change she frequently confers with the countries environment minister recently opened west africas biggest solar power plant just on this sort of short look hes a local solutions created for the people here by the people here who also want to profit from their ideas you know thats also part of our role to show the new face of our fast so which is aware of its own potential good. Book you know fast so aims to become one of africas solar energy pioneers. Social entrepreneurs like princess are they have an essential role to play here she now plans to expand her program across africa. And thats it from us this week we hope that you have enjoyed the show if you have to learn more about us or our Environmental Issues visit our website or check us out on facebook and twitter until next time its goodbye from Nairobi Kenya and goodbye from nigeria hope you will tune in again next week towards africa the environment magazine brought to you by channel stevie dos chevelle and katie n if you have any questions dont hesitate to logon to our website but you will see in the credit thanks for watching and bye bye for now.
