On talent but still poor image of creation opportunity and freedom this makes it especially difficult for independent journalists i see many of the younger promising journalists who are now making names for themselves all over the world. Song live along the way some might follow. With continue. Their experience or freedom in a sense is like the experience of the day you can visit it with your call come back home. My name is your favorite food and i work at. Our guest today is more a tory bagger former spokesman for the german green partys Youth Organization welcome to the d. W. Interviewer. Hello. Mr harborough go tell us why you joined the green party. I decided to join when i was seventeen or eighteen i was finishing school i was interested in politics and looked at different parties the greens were closest to what i was looking for. A party that thinks beyond those National Borders and focuses on things beyond its own well being. The greens dont see politics simply as parliamentary work. Theyre prepared to go out and campaign for their beliefs and not just at election time. I think that any green role models so not so much people the greens had a lower profile back then around two thousand and five to two thousand and ten but at that time i was reading a lot of stuff that was critical of globalisation which i also read about ecology and things like that and i became political primarily because of issues not people. Did your parents support you or did they warn you not to go into politics. And if theyre not really my parents tend to switch back and forth between the social democrats and the greens they probably wouldnt want me to join the christian democrats you talk a nice asian but otherwise they were fine with it. For the. The greens youth wing was very critical of the recent Coalition Talks among the conservatives of the free democrats in the greens are you pleased that the talks collapsed with the platts is this what do you think im not pleased about it but i think that the talk show that these parties are very different from each other. The greens dont have a lot in common with the other two parties so thats why the free democrats decided that the differences among the parties were too great. And i agree with. Our visions for the future ecological change are so different that it just wouldnt work. But your party leader jemez tamir moved closer to the other parties on migration and financial policy was still your youth wing so that a coalition wouldnt work at all. Did you feel betrayed. Did you feel that the party was ignoring your ideals. Well when you did realize that the greens were giving up some of their ideals. Or. They were prepared to really go a long way. But if thats not enough. Then you have to say no this is not going to work. He simply wants. The talks finally collapsed because christian little from the free democrats pulled out you must big landed in the end the greens didnt have to make a lot of compromises. In this. For me it all comes down to the issues. There were still some green positions left in the package but others had been dropped. The real question is how much can you compromise to push through your agenda. Because. I understand that you sometimes have to abandon certain principles about its bad for democracy parties give the impression that they are making compromises only said that they can get into office or stay that. Is just what linda said about his party the free democrats what do you think of linda as a person. I dont much care for him. And i dont really believe that he broke out the talks because he was sincere about his political agenda. Some people now say that his decision was very tactical and calculated i dont think that is credibility. The greens make up twenty one percent. To the city council the party is firmly established in the state. Run news a green and a government in a coalition with the christian democrats. But you probably have more problems with crutches. Absolutely not lead to a completely Different Party the free democrats favor radically liberal economic policies and things like that. Over the years but you have said the coachman sometimes makes you really angry. I think that within a Political Party its important to have disagreements because that friction helps to develop political opinions i think this is a big problem right now in a Democratic Society theres not enough friction there have to be debates we cant say that we all support europe or the environment one hundred percent we just saw that in the Coalition Talks. Even if the conservatives say they want to meet the climate goals it doesnt mean that theyre actually going to do anything and thats the big difference. It matters what people and Political Parties think and i believe that there has to be democracy within a party. I should be able to argue with inflated catchments to find the best way to implement green policies. And i share the same goals. Like. Mr coachmen whos in a coalition with the christian democrats and broaden. The greens almost joined a coalition with them at the federal level would that have been your first choice. Of course theres a kind of a team right now until america has been in power for twelve years shes about to begin her full term. But who will be the next chancellor. If i. Ask what can we offer as a democratic alternative. I think the left can provide some answers but right now the social democrats and the left party are feuding and the greens are much closer to them when it comes to the issues. The greens are not closer to the christian democrats than they are to the social democrats or the left party would. We need an alternative to twelve years of angloamerican something that tells people that we want to future based on solidarity and ecologically sound policy that. We need parliamentary majority is that dont include the christian democrats. But the greens need to join a coalition in the last parliamentary election they won just eight point nine percent of the vote they are the Weakest Party in parliament ninety one percent of germans didnt vote for them what does that say about the partys future with their part time. Best. And i think that Election Results dont necessarily say much about the party or its future of course our results were not particularly good two thousand and nine was better but i still see plenty of potential. When you start to stick with rigorous throw the youre actually a party that represents a lot of high income environmentally oriented voters like a green Free Democratic party at least thats what some voters think. Is true to a certain extent. But when theres too much pressure to find consensus the greens also have to offer alternatives to people who earn less. People on welfare for example. Alternatives but theres more to it than saying we need to have an organic seal of approval on all products. Everyone should have access to organic products and a green lifestyle its absurd to say that organic food appeals only to an elite group that can afford it. I want to healthy food to become standardized and affordable. Should be no separation between an environmental and social Justice Policy and some greens have come around to that idea that swear i see the partys future. Still we have to be honest and admit that perhaps only twenty percent of people will go green. But we have to speak to that twenty percent if the rest dont like us fine. Mr murray said that he would step down after the partys poor showing in the election he might be replaced by robert how back the deputy state premier and choice because. The greens govern in a coalition with the christian democrats their whats your take on the situation. Well have to see what happens and. So far not much has happened. Has only been in power for a few months. So lets see how he works with the christian democrats and free democrats. But as i said its dangerous for a democracy of all parties meet in the center and try to do what they can based on certain economic principles. Parties have to work out their differences. They have to say clearly what they stand for and what theyre against. Parties have to argue thats the only way that well be able to prevent extremist parties from getting stronger. And twenty six years old and working on your ph d. What are your goals for the future. First of all i want to finish my ph d. A. Career in politics. Really my first aim is to continue to study political administration. See how that goes ive got some time. But im passionate about politics. So i want to be politically active and i dont have to make money doing it i want to put my political ideals into practice and it doesnt matter how.
