Bacon welcome to conflict zone thank you for having me a year ago you didnt want donald trump to be president you condemned his comments in the socalled access Hollywood Tape in which he describes sexually assaulting women do you still think hes fundamentally unfit to be president but what i actually said was i didnt think he could one because of that statement so i thought it was maybe better for parents to stand up but i always said his words were utterly disgraceful and disqualifying they were disgraceful but i want to talk appeared to him versus Hillary Clinton i always say i would vote for him over Hillary Clinton cause her conduct was also disqualifying but to say no to you said trump should allow a strong conservative candidate like mike pence from the Republican Party to win in november you were giving him many Second Chances here i actually do you still regret that hes president i actually did though i sort of it could be between him and hillary and vote for him over hillary ok i said theyre all ok but you still rather he wasnt there i prefer him over Hillary Clinton you know that was not a question that wasnt a question congressman well i think it but its plain you still have do you still have profound regrets about him being president. I thought that statement was disgraceful but i think hes doing a good job as president and so i support him with his policy issues but in the end when youre heaven pick a president its between two people and it was him and Hillary Clinton and i thought he was a better choice you gave him a pretty soft time over his highly controversial comments about the violence recent violence in Charlottesville Virginia say when he said there was violence on both sides you said i worry about the vitriol in this country on both sides as if you like the president was saying that both sides which is as bad as each other well you know you have to remember just a few weeks before there my good friend steve was shot by someone from the left and i was just saying that there is virtually all on the left and the right now i condemned the racism those who support rape and you white nazi or race klux klan i condemn what the president did too and i think what he meant was that the that there is for both sides and i think both sides do a better i i seriously think theres an equivalence between not see White Supremacists shouting jews will not replace this and those who oppose them theres a liquid between you know theres an equivalence and i would have been on the side of those protesting but they should not have done it in a violent way and thats i think that was the president is sometimes a father who drove a car and protest that he was wrong and you know what he i mean those were the whites and he should be told that he should be held accountable and the president condemned white nazis ku klux klan. And i did too but there is vitter all on both sides and i saw we saw was steves coolies getting shot by someone who was inflamed by what to screw ups. In the wake of charlottesville five u. S. Joint chiefs issued unprecedented public condemnations of white supremacist groups not both sides they didnt talk about both sides being violent or vitriol on both sides they didnt equivocate but you couldnt bring yourself to do that you took the president s line i condemn white nazis ku klux klan period but you basically implied that there was fault on both sides because the other because this is what i search you can protest not season ku klux klan i would have protested were thoughts folks but we do not have a right to violence and do on that i believe in Martin Luther kings message of peaceful protest and we need to see that we are protesting even when around the right we do not have a right to go to violence that would be thats that was the editor of my college other people in your party were much stronger in their condemnation of both of what the president said and what the White Supremacists were doing so to Lindsey Graham one that trumps words were dividing americans not healing them senator bob corker chair of the Foreign Relations committee he questioned the president s stability and competence senator marco rubio mr president you cant allow White Supremacists to share only part of the blame its your duty to call out evil when you see it as you know nazis are evil. Make it clear here for cyclists enough now heres a google exclaimed both are evil and you think the president made that point yes he said he made that statement hes it is evil he he condoned nazis and ku klux klan but i think the intent of his comment was even we protest against them we should do it in a peaceful way i dont think we dont want violence as part of our so what do you think is some party condemned him why do you think his Business Councils collapse why do you think the president of the f l c o said i cannot sit on a council for a president who tolerates bigotry and domestic terrorism you know i i give them the right to speak their mind too and they are i think its all right to disagree on the stuff i believe the president was making it clear that klux klan groups nazi groups are important but you accept his comments horrified people in america and around the world and senior members of your party i think theres the media folks like you who like to twist those words and i think that thats part of thats whats going to be im quoting the words he said each did say he said they were fine people on both sides that you know there are people among the and i think he should be more clear he was saying why do i take his statement asli when he said that nazis and ku klux klan were report were repugnant i think use the word repugnant and revolting Kenneth Fraser head of merck pharma sooting littles also resigned from the Business Council he said i feel a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and within fifty four minutes the president shot back with another can frazier merk farmer has resigned hell have more time to lower ripoff drug prices i think thats an appropriate response thats probably not how i would answer they are you went before congress to appeal for civility i think we should be more subtle kind of civility you had in mind i think our president should have raised the bar civility but so should both parties hes dr think hes dropped lets face i would say but i. I would say that if i was him i would work on raising the bar Civility Office supporters want some of the fights back too and youre seeing that total war right now my way is to im a conservative i believe in making my case in a civil way. So i would i dont take it the same way by no a lot of supporters want someone who who fights back as one of the reasons you got elected peter wayne of former adviser to george w. Bush now at the ethics and Public Policy center here said weve never had a president who so relishes producing animosity and hate among americans and who does it so consistently so gleefully and so intentionally hes right as i would disagree with they are i think that theyre somewhat tasteless and what this is doing its its totally one sided kind of comedy i think that we have to look at someone and or to tally that what i talk to exactly the way that donald trump or the President Trump does no its not my style i would i wouldnt of probably would have done well as a commander speaking that way but he does have a large so im going to support that wants him to fight back and thats what were seeing were seeing think of them resolving this in some other think back to the gold star family the cons that he insulted the parents of a serviceman who died fighting for his country think back to senator john mccains war where court that he trashed in really think why it is when his judgment is off well mark i would say in those cases i dont think the president should have in those comments i thought they were inappropriate as well. The problem isnt just about civility its about allies as well as them and the president has lied consistently over so many things how do you cope with that how do you spin that to yourself which lies you want to talk about. The fourth or second example being forty tweeted after being forced to apologize for its bad and inaccurate coverage of me after winning the elections the fake New York Times is still lost only one problem the New York Times than the politics this march the seventh one hundred twenty two vicious prisoners he said released by the Obama Administration from guantanamo have returned to the battlefield another terrible decision you know what i believe some was hundred thirty by bush not by obama but there has been about a third of our current turmoil prisoners have gone back on the football field so i think thats the end turn of their karma in july after his speech to boy scouts mr trump said i got a call from the head of the boy scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them it was news to the boy scouts because theyd already apologized for the political content in his speech thats a lie as it was a straight you know im not part of their i wasnt part of the discussion but i was you know you sell that to us that youve given the president your full support you said at the beginning i support this president. You cite port the general those countries iran of our country and i support the general conservative message in the theme series taken us i want to lower taxes i want to fix our tax code i want to strengthen our military but what about the role of congress to hold the executive to account i mean you would youd never have let a democrat you think we should impeach him no im just about to tell you that i think ok you would never have let a democrat get away with not revealing his taxes not releasing his taxes you wouldnt have is there is there a law that says he has to do it nobody promised he promised twenty fourteen he said if i decide to run for office ill produce my tax returns absolutely never did but heres the heres the thing you know if it was me i would i would put out my taxes you know but we do do a photo disclosure our process is very extensive i think i can remember how many pages has a so its pretty pretty extensive but in the end at my going to put my emphasis on focusing on the taxes hes following the law hes in what the law i want to put my focus on fixing our broken tax code getting our military back on its feet it was broken under the Previous Administration thats where i choose to put my my focus. What are americas allies to make of this president or doesnt it matter what they think you know the rest of the world is pulling away from America Angela merkel in germany is her comment after meeting trump earlier this year the days when europe could rely on others was over to a certain extent. To assertion we see a lot of leaders who support him too i mean just look at his role i mean that relationship with barack obama was broken were seeing a reproach with those role again and i dont see it we see the french leadership initially was strained but that report has become better i think were seeing a good grip or in the far east with a right or not china excuse me are japan so i would disagree with your assertion the pew survey latest pew survey among thirty seven nations in june showed an average of just twenty two percent of people had confidence in trying to do the right thing in International Affairs thats a massive downturn its not a good thing about america disastrous loss of confidence in the United States thats happened on his watch. I would just say that your assertions of that leadership is not the case but yeah i think if its twenty two percent i havent seen a poll number that would be good we should all wish it was better what are the allies to make of his disrespect for his own Intelligence Services for instance over russia he still sometimes refers to the whole hacking issue as a hoax made to make a bad let me make about disparaging comments about nato he called it obsolete yeah but you know i think we seen that that tone change what you heard there was a Campaign Theme i disagree with that i think nato is very important and i said i disagree with that publicly when he said it however i would say you know where hes at now i think hes in a better spot with nato but the one thing that he was good on with nato a lot of countries only a few countries are paying in other to put two percent g. D. P. And i think that he has them focused on getting there so theres been some goodness to with some honesty and some candor and theyve got up to twenty twenty four to raise their spending so were seeing a lot of countries are sitting as you there and what he said in february said the money is coming in like never before so the money is coming in i think were seeing an improvement you think there was room for improvement for what nato was spending on defense yes how disappointed are you with the lack of progress on the republican legislative program im thinking of the failure to appear to repeal obamacare much trumpeted to both in the campaign and since Trump Took Office the legislative program is in tatters is there i think on health care it is and i think its discouraging i think we expected better out of the silent i know five of the six senators who. Pushed back against the bigger bill had campaigned to repeal or replace i wish there was a better work there and im im committed to continuing the effort to work on health care because of the Small Business community the farmers Real Estate Agency with us on the individual market. Theyre suffering paying thirty thousand a year in premiums and then even more would deduct the deductibles so we have to fix that but there was a huge hype wasnt there congressman well you know there was a lot of president s beautiful plan was just there waiting to be implemented wasnt it if there was a commitment to get this done and i dont and we did not get it done so my view of it is. And so taking one big bite at the apple what we were trying to do we need to do multiple different bills that are smaller more targeted because the folks are an individual market are crying for relief and we cant just walk away so im committed to continuing working on health care and we have twenty four different bills that i am supporting cosponsoring that will provide some relief to those that are pay it there and the individual market because we committed to it now which is subtle but it got the job done but it didnt happen so now weve got weve got to come back and figure how were going to rebound and my mind if you want to smaller bills will get it done and one of your colleagues republican colleagues in Congress Mark meadows of North Carolina he said last month if there was ever a time when republicans feel pressure to perform its now if big things dont get done by thanksgiving theres where they really wont be enough spin to say republicans here havent done anything but fail well thats thats quite an indictment is i think we have all the arms of government you have the senate you have the house of representatives you have the white house you have twenty five out of fifty governorships in this day and you cant process the New York Times in anything more than renaming a post office these days well i would say weve done more than that however i think the promise of mark metals comments theres a lot of truth there there we have to get tax reform done i think was the underlying theme of that comment and so were going to be working hard on that to make that a reality out of house but really again we got to go through the senate but there has been other work done the house the house has passed more bills than whats been ever passed the last twenty to thirty years weve done a lot of work on our Regulatory Reform weve done dodd frank reform weve got the military back on the line of. Of getting back to their feet and getting healthy again but what we have what we have to do is get some of those things out of the summit before thered be progress so i would say there is i generally would agree with mark models there weve got to get more results the public wants more results dont they the poll last week said Seventy Eight percent of americans disapprove of the job republicans doing in congress only fifteen percent approve do you how do you hang your head in shame when you say i dont think theres much i think fifty percent approval you know im back in the in the house is it i know the house has to livered and everything we said we would do so i know that weve done our job in the house but i dont also most of the people in the senate the ones i work with and know well theyve done everything they can to bottom line is weve got to keep working and with the publics not by you know but you know i personally that i doesnt matter what it does matter but i would say that i have done everything i could do on the key issues i have voted right in the house has delivered on most key issues we have delivered on Regulatory Reform we did deliver on Health Care Reform out of the house which we did what we said we were going to do we delivered on dad frank reforms we got our military back on its feet so the house has delivered and i wish we did have better results of the senate and we got what so if we cant stop weve got to continue work on that what are you going to do on gun control after the appalling mass shooting in vegas but hes going to do that well first of all i was turned but repulsed at the immediate. Partisanship that came out i think we should have given it a few days for so lets get the investigation wasnt all the usual thing republicans say give it a few days wait for the public to. Lose interest in the last week of the elite to get out of the issue and then well do nothing again i was talking to my democrat colleagues yesterday who are appalled at some of the comments that were made because we should give it time to know what kind of guns that the guy have we dont even know what motivated him yet theres always things that we should learn before jumping to conclusions in the end this guy was evil this is your way of saying youre not going to do anything about it because no i think we should all have x. Im not i dont believe in doing something without facts maybe you do i dont last year the house of representatives as you know staged a sit in on the floor of the house to protest the fact that you wouldnt let your party would let two votes on gun control go to a vote is that what youre going to do again im not going to sit on the floor protest now but it was the democrats who did and i got a lot done didnt it didnt get anything done well i think thats thats the point they were protesting at the fact that your party wasnt doing anything about this yet in the end i we do have a constitution and im going to a defender of the Second Amendment and i do think there are some areas areas to reflect like for example the ability to modify a gun it to be an automatic weapon i think that they its a discussion point that we need to have hot why why did a. T. F. Make the conclusion that thats legal and so im signing a letter today san a. T. F. Why did you do that what was your background reasoning should we not reconsider because in the end i think there was a big part of this issue though i think we should hear from the investigation but when you can modify a semiautomatic into an automatic weapon automatic weapons are illegal so i think that thats an area that we need to delve into and i think we can fix of id like to hear both sides of that issue though but in the end were going to i think we want to enforce the laws we have and yes we havent actually done due to you signed a bill the president signed a bill in full. Bre actually making it easier for the mentally impaired to get guns you know the view every twenty eight the v. F. W. In the American Legion agreed with those that it was throwing veterans that should not have had their gun rights taken away under the bus you want the mentally impaired to make no we should have easy access to guns we should have due process before how would you like it so inside your mentally disabled taking your gun dont you have due process that the regulation did not have due process to it and so if you had a group of twenty people and you had one or two people that perhaps should have their guns taken away the other retained should have their guns taken away though. And thats what this but thats what that regulation was doing was throwing a lot of people under the bus taking away their Second Amendment rights so theres got to be due process to this and thats what thats what we voted for lets talk a little bit about Foreign Policy youve called the nuclear deal with iran deeply flawed and you have the possibility the running could have a Nuclear Weapon within ten years general mattis your defense secretary doesnt agree with you he was asked the other day in congress if you supported americas thing within the deal he said yes. Israeli Intelligence Experts who youve often cited and youve said you admired them. They also say that this deal has been good for israel not of that stature thats not charge me given my former head of israels time to talk to you know myself about this so they come again larry cami gillan former head of israels Domestic Intelligence the shin bet he said in july that are the two Year Anniversary of the nuclear deal the threat of an iranian Nuclear Weapon is more remote than it has been in decades i just dont present Prime Minister netanyahu and i met with his team this summer i think that that agreement is deeply flawed its going to give iran a Nuclear Weapon roughly in ten years or all gentlemen as a Nuclear Program or months away its delayed enormously if ever happens i think in the end what we did is we kicked the can down the road to legitimize iran getting a Nuclear Weapon and we give one hundred fifty billion dollars back immediately so they got everything they wanted right up front for a promise or something down the road i agree with Prime Minister netanyahu that this agreement as a minimum has to be renegotiated we should never say its an agreeable to iran have a legitimate Nuclear Weapons program iran has dismantled them removed two thirds of its centrifuges whats wrong with the i think that thats good it has reduced its stockpile of enrich uranium by ninety eight percent to shipping over twenty five thousand pounds out of the country whats wrong with that i think thats a good thats good the core of its iraqi reactor which could have allowed the country to produce weapons grade plutonium has been removed the shell has been filled with concrete whats wrong with that i think thats good to see. Its like a great deal that you know you know this thing its a temporary improvement in the end iran wants to have a Nuclear Capability i think theyre working with the North Koreans in the meantime in this ten year hiatus we should never have legitimize them as a Nuclear Power and thats what this agreement did and we gave them back one hundred fifty billion dollars immediately for a promise for something that they may do over ten years i think what were our children grandchildren are going to suffer a grave threat with iran Nuclear Capability versus iran they have a theyve committed to the annihilation of israel their leadership so i think this bill i think that agreement is deeply flawed lets talk about israel for a moment you said earlier in the interview that president obama was hostile to israel how hostile is it to sign the largest ever military assistance package with thirty eight billion dollars equipping israels air force with advanced f. Thirty five aircraft maintaining its military edge theres a lot of countries around the around the world would like that kind of hostility from the United States thats hostile that that part the agreement itself was reasonably good other was a lot of commitment are things that they were now i was not allowed to come back to congress to make any more requests so there are a lot of other stipulations in the bill that i found a little distasteful i must give out a long time Israeli Defense official retired from Government Service said its easy to criticize obama but on the military front the relationship was incredible and i think there was credit i do see there was a good report at the military level and i was a part of that i hope stand up Missile Defense in israel contrast that with a republican President Donald Trump who can asli gave away one of israels secrets on the isis Prime Minister netanyahu said the relationship of United States and israel is the best its been in a decade i may also have endangered the source of that intelligence you think that was an intelligent thing for the president to have done and we should be very careful when were talking about classified information i would agree. Im too worried congressman that when future people look back if this presidency ends badly people going to look back and think who gave found to have been easy time and who failed to hold him to account who didnt criticize like some members of your party of criticizing you worried that youre going to be on the wrong side of history you know i believe in criticizing when its right and i dont believe in criticize put on a bandwagon in the end this is what i want to do i want to get tax reform done i want to get you think youre going to get your one done im going to work out the record so far im going to work hard at it and i want to work i want to continue working on reforming our Health Care System that is broke i want to work and get our military strong again and thats where i put my focus a lot of folks like yourself evidently want to focus on the twitter and this and that i dont think that that in the long run is constructive i want to get big policy issues done and thats right but my focus but this is my campaign and our district is different you disappointed with way you got to here. Disappointed in what disappointed in the legislative program that we talked about this and tell us i am disappointed with the president who keeps changing his mind about everything im just nobody going to believe the senate did not get Health Care Reform done im not disappointed that the house the house performance we have passed every bill that we set out to pass so i feel good about what weve done out of the house and granted that we have a two house system so we got we got to get things through the senate and i agree that that is disappointing congressman dont make its been good to have you know hope thank you thank you very much.
