A warm welcome to our viewers im tom. After the twenty seventeen elections to the bundestag germanys parliament is germany a country that you personally feel good about living in. Well id like to live in a country that does more to address certain things and in that i fit in with the three thousand one hundred people i surveyed. Before october. Here in germany we see the major parties dramatically losing support the parties that have governed germany these past years. And now we have a far right populist party the a. F. D. In the bluntest og what does this election result say about the mood here in germany. Im not surprised at the election result our surveys took place in two thousand and fifteen and two thousand and sixteen so they didnt specifically address the parliamentary elections but what we did see is that people want Straight Talk and seen her they dont want to be coddled and talked down to which is what they felt was going on for example theres not much point in talking about technological change in digitalization if people werent told we know this is affecting your life and this is what well do for you. Just twenty thirty here and theres little point in talking about raising educational standards for everyone if people arent told this is how it will help your daughter your son this is what our future will look like so when people werent being given those broader explanations. So even people who didnt intend to vote for the f. D. A. They were looking for an alternative they were saying hey guys please be specific be concrete talk about those enormous changes that we can see happening. And that those are important questions but people are also talking about this sense of anger and fear were seeing especially in eastern germany was this reflected in your study. Theres a lot of fear and worry behind what i just described say you have a job with the City Sanitation Department you still have a pretty good job but it home your robot vacuum cleaner cleans your floors outside the robot lawnmower cuts the grass. Towel. This is awesome yes i know. People arent stupid they know this technological change is coming and will completely transform how we live exist and. They dont want to lose their jobs they know what happens to people who lose their jobs and cant find another one and who end up permanently out of work was so his thats what im talking about our world is changing in so many ways and people need real answers not just empty abstract cliches. Is to know is the fear of losing your job the biggest fear in germany right now in our surveys people cited work and employment as their top concern theyre concerned about health about social cohesion but their top concern is employment and work more than ninety percent put that at the very top of our seven point scale then youve got all the doom and gloom about jobs vanishing on the one hand and there we reassurances that new types of jobs will replace them instead of the inside often and let people think wait a minute we are prepared or training for whatever those new jobs might be enough to jobs and then you have a problem winning their vote and they get sick of it. And voters are speaking at cross purposes voters say they need straight answers and politicians arent delivering them. Straight talk and real answers require courage they require politicians to speak directly to certain segments of the populace even if other groups dont personally care all that much about those issues for example a highly trained computer expert isnt worried about these questions. Thats why politicians need courage they need to have a vision. They need to explain to certain groups yes things are changing but we havent forgotten you. We wont leave you. Hind well find solutions and this is exactly how well do it on our survey we heard concerns about food and nutrition about climate protection social inequality education and technological change and this inventive. Changes that urgent and if people need real answers what should we think when our chancellor says i dont believe we need to do anything different. Kind of hell have to ask chancellor merkel that question. Of course but ultimately the chancellor statement is something that affects voters here. Yes but we have a Broad Spectrum of Political Parties this demand is being made of all the parties and the other members of merkels conservative party they all need to give some clear answers. They cant just fall people off with the idea that things are good unemployment is down and they need to talk about the future. Thats thats what i see in the survey people say its not enough to be doing well right now they see all those changes and feel like theyre being left to deal with them on their own and. This feeling of being abandoned in unheard that shaped this Election Campaign and its results so those are the worries and problems you mentioned your study also showed that a great many people feel good about their situation so where is that coming from. Thats been the. If you remember half a year ago there were all sorts of newspaper stories about germans being big complainer. Stories about german sitting around in majorca and then still complaining about their pensions are too low. Story saying that they had no idea how hard life was for people in other countries and gave i thought in our survey we didnt see any of that kind of arrogance that germans were being accused of we saw people saying yes im doing fine. Im doing ok. But i also see these changes are underway and i want to be able to cope with these changes so i want to know what politicians are going to do to address this. Edition. Of id like to also ask people what is it you want what is it you want for your children. Who would say ok i know Technological Development is important but to be honest im not really confronting it myself or working on it. Its my son and my daughter who will have to deal with that thats the job of the next generation thats the legacy were leaving them food issues climate all of that is very important but people admit that theyre too complacent to confront those issues themselves. So we did hear that people were being critical of themselves of their own actions. That element of self criticism is what politicians need to address. Any form of self criticism is also a call for action an appeal to help me do something im not able to stop being complacent stop being lazy. People are saying yes things are good but i need to be pushed beyond that he tells. You say that politicians should provide much more concrete answers could it be that the politicians simply dont have them. That is compelled. To just say its not it depends on what time frame you envision. When lots of people complain that they dont really know whether the food they eat is healthy. Stuff all that means theyre demanding more bans on certain ingredients and foodstuffs. Written order. Or take social inequality. They want to know why do we have a minimum wage now but not a. Some wage why dont you do something about these huge bonuses especially when these managers did nothing to earn them. Why isnt there a minimum pension answers to these questions about social inequality could have been clearly formulated. When you asked your respondents to look into the future many said they were afraid that they would get worse. Yes of course people are worried that jobs are vanishing. People who want work and are afraid they wont have it. Theres a huge gap in what people say they want to leave for the next generation as their legacy and what they think will actually happen in the future. What they see around them what they hear from the media is what they see for the future they need to name. What people see now and how they imagine the future and thats how it works and so. I want to turn to another important issue. Were talking about the future and your study shows that many young people arent interested in politics. Is that dangerous and does that make young people susceptible to these fake easy solutions. I have we spoke to lots of young people we conducted another survey in two thousand and sixteen after two thousand and fifteen. And this it changed by leaps and bounds. So twelve months earlier you told us that youre completely uninterested in politics. Whats going on thats when they told us well yes thats changed. By two thousand and sixteen they said that they had a reason to become politically engaged and they wanted to do something about the Anti Foreigner Movement and they wanted to organize counterdemonstrations thats what the major parties are we can almost see the former major parties need to pick up on. Thats where they can get. Young people involved we have to be able to give them a purpose and show where they can take action and theres plenty of room for that thats why i believe we need a National Civil Service Program for young people for what it is for lower the voting age to get them involved. In a force thats very important we have students who come to my lectures theyre seventeen and they cant vote to be honest i think thats very odd. And in the its a quick and him. You called your study a legacy study. So thats why i want to conclude our interview by asking about your personal legacy and complete the sentences. What are the happiest about today is does that germany is still a place with a strong sense of social solidarity a place that welcomes fairness and redistribution and thats true across the social spectrum. Thats mine for the legacy i want to pass on to my son is this is that he looks to the right and left and doesnt get stuck in his own bubble. For the future i look forward to enjoying just that people dont just talk about but that we strive for without leaving any group behind including people who are new arrivals to this country. Youre tom ending a thank you thank you.
