Jordan William Carter of Duluth has been charged with second-degree murder after his fiance's 3-year-old son died in September.
Although Carter offered other explanations for the boy's condition, doctors who examined the child at Essentia and Children's Hospital were concerned that his injuries were more consistent with child abuse.
Health professionals noted bruising on the left side of the 3-year-old's face, ear and hip, along with circular bruising to his left forearm "concerning for a grip mark," and several bruises on his back and shins.
The boy was also suffering from a traumatic brain injury. There was hemorrhaging in his brain and retinas and internal abdominal injuries.
