It’s certainly nothing new. Robocalls from telemarketers have plagued us for years. But lately, these telemarketers are getting cannier, driving us crazier and making us poorer. They’re increasingly shameless, impersonating banks, credit card companies, the CRA, even the RCMP and the FBI — using the bureau’s actual number; how ballsy is that? — by displaying faked (“spoofed”) caller IDs that we can’t report, block or even call back and scream at. Last year, those calls defrauded more than 42,000 of us of more than $104 million. We’re hit several times a day, even in the wee hours. We could mute our phones overnight, but should we have to?
