âWhat I want is justice for Keishla,â the victimâs mother, Keila Ortiz, said at a press conference Thursday, according to the Associated Press. âWeâre going through a pain that Tony and I never imagined.â Her father said, however, that despite the brutal nature of the crime, he does not support seeking the death penalty. âThat doesnât solve anything for me. Whatâs done is done,â he said, according to the AP. âLet him remember every day who my daughter was.â
Does Puerto Rico have the death penalty?
Judge Camille Velez at a hearing last week said, âThis is a death penalty-eligible case.â As per the Death Penalty Information Center, a non-profit organization âserving the media and the public with analysis and information on issues concerning capital punishment,â which was founded in 1990, Spanish colonists brought the death penalty to Puerto Rico. The first recorded executions in Puerto Rico, as per the center, took place in 1514 when four slaves were hanged for an uprising.
