This was groundbreaking at the time, and since then, the show has continued to increase its representation and visibility of minorities. But as is so often the case in TV and film, disability is lagging behind. So many people can now look at the show and see themselves represented, but we can't quite say that's true for disabled people yet.

The recent casting of John Bishop has pushed this issue to the forefront once again. While John will likely do a fantastic job, it's disappointing to see another white, non-disabled man be cast in a main role. It feels miles away from the casting of Jo Martin, who was revealed as an unseen regeneration of The Doctor back in season 12, thereby making her the first Black woman in the role.
