Australia’s biggest law firms are capitalising on growing demand for “one-stop shops” for combined legal and advisory work by launching consulting arms.
Law firms including DLA Piper, Allen & Overy, Lander & Rogers and Ashurst have all launched new risk and governance advisory businesses over the past 18 months, with all hoping to lure both clients and potential recruits away from the traditional consulting outfits.
MinterEllison’s new CEO Virginia Briggs said her firm is redefining “what it means to be a law firm”.

Big six law firm MinterEllison, which was the first to push into consulting in 2016 and now has more than 100 staff in its business advisory arm, is also “actively” expanding its offering.
