Montgomery District 1 voters will probably have to return to the polls on Aug. 24 to decide who will represent them on the city council, according to incomplete, unofficial returns.
About 2,600 voters of 16,500 turned out Tuesday to cast their ballots in the race. With all but provisional ballots counted, Ed Grimes and Donald Mims will be in a runoff.
Grimes led the race until the last precinct's numbers were counted. He finished Tuesday evening with 1,326 votes, or 49.35%, while Mims finished with 567 votes, or 21.10%.
Provisionals will be counted on July 20.
District 1 includes a wide swath of the city stretching from central to east Montgomery.
