In February 2021, anti-vaccine activist and conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shared a Facebook post purporting to describe “new research” published by “veteran immunologist” J. Bart Classen in a journal named Microbiology & Infectious Diseases. The study in question asserted to have found evidence that Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccines could cause neurological degenerative diseases. In April 2021, the right-wing National File promoted this same study, describing the research as “credible” — apparently basing this conclusion on nothing more than the fact that it appears in what looks to be a legitimate scientific journal.
