Delivering cozy lyrics, as if from a loving friend sharing wisdom in the living room, Charity asks over plucks of guitar and a rising tempo of a neo-soul nature, “Did you take some time to discover you?”
The 30-year-old Detroit musician, Charity Ward, who goes by just “Charity” in her work, released that verse in February 2020 in her debut album, “Tender Headed.” And yet, that encouragement for self-reflection could have been written as recently as last week, by her telling of the impact COVID-19 had on her life and career.
Her planned tour was called off and her original dreams for her life’s work thus far — “Tender Headed” — were dashed. But on the latest episode of the Detroit Free Press podcast “We Lived It,” she talks about the Charity she discovered in the last year, her journey as a musician in a pandemic, and finding surprise success, despite everything.
