reporter: you won't find mayberry r.f.d. on the map. but if close neighbors, good schools, and just plain, old civility is what you're looking for in a place to call home, you could do worse than settle in grovetown, georgia. tamara baldwin has lived here for 14 years. >> you see the children outside playing, having a good time. just a nice, quiet place that you wanna move and take your family to. >> reporter: the way we think america used to be, and seems to be harder and harder to find, huh? >> yeah. >> the army's ft. gordon is just down the road and a number of the city's 12,000 residents are active or retired military. crime stats can be measured in stolen bicycles. >> great place to raise a family. >> reporter: here's a veteran investigator for the county. what's your crime rate? >> it's not that high. we don't have too much violent crime. >> reporter: dozens of homicides a year, would you say? >> no, not at all. we might have one a year. >> reporter: one a year? >> yeah. >> reporter: and in march, 2009, they did have one -- a homicide. a bad one that sent neighbors shopping for burglar alarms and maybe fresh ammo. >> you wonder, "what's going on? what's happening?"
