institute still exist. and they still do kind of non-partisan hard work around the world. of promoting small d democracy and promoting the institutions of civil society that any culture needs in order to have a functioning democracy. and you might imagine that is a sensitive and controversial issue. right? particularly in countries where their government doesn't really want democracy infecting the way they're ruling their people. it was meant to be provocative and controversial from the outset when reagan announced it. and that's proven to be true over the years. but these institutes still exist. these efforts. these american efforts still exist and persist around the world. even in very difficult circumstances. depending on the country where they're operating, they've had hard times, they've had near-death experiences.
