has not worked. at least i know china tried. between june 20th and july 5th, he's changed his entire view of china's role when i comes to north korea. >> reporter: what we are hearing from administration officials is that they are still going to give a diplomatic quite a bit of chance. they want diplomacy to work. it's no longer a china-centered strategy. they are trying to enlist allies throughout the region and the globe. look for president trump to do that at the g-20, trying to find new alliances. it's really the importance of international venues like this that could give trump an opportunity to repair some of the damage from his first european outing. but what we are hearing throughout the administration is that the diplomacy is still alive and well but it's no longer china first. that raises some interesting questions because it's china that has all the leverage on north korea. it's very difficult to figure out a way how you will pressure the chinese, the north koreans, without having the chinese apply at least part of that pressure.
