open their first paycheck on january of 2011 it won't be smaller than it was before. >> nbc's kelly o'donnell is on capitol hill. kelly, where do we stand with the support the president is hoping to get from democrats? >> reporter: well, when joe biden comes here to talk to his former colleagues in the senate, that meeting will be pivotal, but not even speaking with the house democrats as a whole, his mere presence on capitol hill sends a signal the white house really wants to get democrats to sign off on this so they can move to the other issues. you heard the president's tone about try to de-emphasize the deal part of this. we are certainly hearing a lot of frustration among more liberal members and certainly outside interest groups, liberal interest groups have been making their position known. in fact, one of them has been organizing big donors to call the white house and flood the switchboard there with concerns and complaints. so in this period while we're seeing behind the scenes meetings, publicly liberals are saying they're angry at the president, not happy that they believe he caved in.
