airliners are being made of carbon fiber, not metal. and this is what lightning does to carbon fiber. bad enough on a normal camera. now look at it in super slow motion. you can see the fibers shredding what would be the skin of the plane. the solution, you can't see it, but woven into the carbon fibers is a layer of metal. it does add weight, but just look at the difference it makes. now you can really see the damage done by the lightning on this piece of carbon fiber. >> yes. there's an awful lot. you have torn fibers here. shredded fibers and it's an awful lot of damage. but this is without protectant. with lightning protection here you can see that the damage is much reduced. and you'd be safe to fly on. >> you wouldn't really want to be flying on an airplane that did that. >> you wouldn't want to at all, no. >> reporter: one final test because we couldn't resist it.
