and on this day in 1964, one of the members of the great train robbery gang escaped to maximum security prison in england. his name was charlie wilson. he and more than a dozen others had pulled off the massive heist just a year earlier. the thieves attacked a british mail truck and got away with millions of dollars. but days later, a tip led police to their hideout. and the cops uncovered plenty of evidence linking them to the crime. they eventually arrested wilson and a judge sentenced him to 30 years behind bars. after just a few months in the hole, wilson broke free, he stayed on the lamb for several years. but cops finally captured him in canada. after wilson served the rest of his sentence in england he moved on to spain and there i reportedly continued a life of crime becoming a drug dealer but a convicted robber made a run for it 49 years ago today. and now you know the news for this monday, august the 12th, 2013. i'm shepard smith.
