The Des Moines area’s population grew 16.7% from 2010 to 2020, according to recent data released from the U.S. Census Bureau. According to the census data, the estimated population of the Des Moines-West Des Moines metropolitan statistical area as of July 1, 2020, was 707,915, up from 606,478 in 2010. Year over year, Des Moines grew 1.1% from 2019 to 2020, the data showed. By percentage, the Des Moines-West Des Moines MSA grew faster than Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City, Milwaukee and St. Louis over the 10-year period, a trend that officials with the Greater Des Moines Partnership say shows the region’s population reaching 1 million people in the coming years. “Our region’s population growth shows that [Des Moines] continues to experience momentum as a growing and global region,” said Jay Byers, president and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, in the release. “Talent attraction and retention continues to be a top focus of our region as we move into economic recovery.”
