Q: Our son is a graduate student working on his master’s degree. Last year, he received a grant of $20,000 (tax-free) to continue his research and studies. Since he turned 27 last year, our private medical insurance plan no longer covers him. He was assessed $642 for drug coverage by RAMQ (Régie de l​’assurance maladie du Québec) in 2020. Is this charge the norm that everyone must pay, salary or no salary? What about people who are unemployed or on welfare?
