The deadline for filing individual tax returns is still April 30, but does that affect anyone who has received Employment Insurance or any of the different types of federal COVID-19 income support in 2020? That was one of the issues raised in this week’s batch of reader questions.

Q: Have governments extended the deadline for filing income taxes for 2020 as they did last year?
A: They haven’t. Not yet, at least. It’s still April 30 for individual tax returns for both Ottawa and Quebec, and it is important to meet the deadline so there will be no disruption in government benefits such as the GST credit, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Solidarity Tax Credit. What did change was the urgency to pay up any taxes owing by April 30 for one group of Canadians. It was announced last week that anyone who received Employment Insurance or any of the various forms of Government of Canada COVID-19 income support in 2020 and had taxable income below $75,000 now has until April 30, 2022, to pay any federal taxes owing for 2020 with no interest penalties. The Quebec government confirmed Friday it will follow suit for provincial tax returns. For everyone else, the old rules apply — compound daily interest on any unpaid amounts owing starting May 1.
