About 100 yards away, custodian Patrick Marvel was in the middle of cleaning up the playground before the students of Maple Lane Elementary came out for recess.

Maple Lane Elementary Chief Custodian Joe O'Donnell, left, and custodian Patrick Marvel came to the aid of an elderly man who had fallen into a creek near the school Thursday, April 22, 2021.
The voice sounded distraught, Marvel said. He ran into the woods behind the school, trying to find the voice in need.
