Tickets to Friday’s Opening Day races and festivities at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club are sold out, but the crowds are expected to be thinner than usual this year.
Due to COVID-19 measures, the club can sell only as many tickets as there are seats, said Craig Dado, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. Total seating at the track in the grandstand, clubhouse, Turf Club, Skyrooms, luxury and celebrity suites and its five major restaurants is just under 15,000.
This is Del Mar’s 82nd racing season.
In years past, up to 40,000 people were allowed to buy tickets and were allowed to stand or walk around. Dado said now the club can’t sell such general admissions tickets, so if people try to attend opening day without a ticket, they would be turned away.
