Deaths climbing at Western New York nursing homes

At least 83 nursing home residents with Covid-19 died across New York State during the week ending Nov. 29, including 21 people in Western New York.
Those fatalities at 38 nursing homes show that the second wave of the virus is again taking a heavy toll on the vulnerable residents of long-term care facilities.
In Western New York, GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster had five Covid-19 deaths during that week, tied for the third highest among the more than 600 nursing homes in New York, according to data provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has pointed out that the county’s increasing number of Covid-19 deaths in November is partially due to fatalities at nursing homes and assisted living sites.
