Beaumont Health has a fresh controversy, linked to its partnership with a Pennsylvania behavioral health company named Universal Health Services (UHS). The Royal Oak-based network of eight Metro Detroit hospitals has a joint venture agreement with UHS to build a 150-bed Dearborn psychiatric facility.
Detroit Free Press report Jennifer Dixon reports in a subscriber-only article that UHS "settled 19 whistleblower lawsuits in 2020 that had alleged patient mistreatment and fraud.
Universal agreed to pay $122 million to the federal government and participating states, including Michigan. ... In a statement to the Detroit Free Press, Universal said it "unequivocally disputes any allegation that it engaged in wrongdoing of any kind."
