ALTON — Miles Davis has been recruited to help raise awareness for skin cancer.
His statue on Third Street in Alton will be dressed up for Skin Cancer Awareness Month, according to Miles Davis Jazz Festival chairperson Lee Barham.
“It’s a one-day event, May 1, and the dressing will be removed at the end of the event,” he said.
The jazz festival board worked with Godfrey-based Pride Inc. to erect the bronze Davis statue in front of Chez Marilyn, 119 W. 3rd St., Alton, in 2015.
Lisa Woods, chief operating officer of The GroundSwell Group who works with Barham on the jazz festival, contacted Barham about two weeks ago to discuss the statue as part of the group’s Skin Cancer Awareness Month campaign. The Alton statue was selected as Illinois’ statue for the campaign.
