Dan Swanson seems to have claimed victory Tuesday in his first primary challenge since he was elected in 2016. With 86 percent reporting on Tuesday night Swanson had about 73 percent of the vote to win the Republican primary for the 71st District State House seat. Swanson defeated 22-year-old Matthew Rauschert of Bushnell who ran on a more populist kind of conservatism in a campaign largely financed by the candidate and his family. Rauschert boasted of not taking any money from Super PACs and on the spending side of things, Raushcert was a strong opponent. Swanson has represented the 74th District since 2016, succeeding longtime State Rep. Don Moffitt, but this was his first run at the redrawn 71st District. Swanson is an Army veteran and farmer, who has made advocating for veterans and farmers a central part of his legislative career. Swanson will face Democrat Christopher DeMink in November, who he defeated by nearly 50 points in 2020.
