LAETITIA DUARTE
No other candle has created such a pop culture frenzy as Diptyque. Meghan Markle burns them in her house. John Mayer created a video ode to it. Countless fans of Feu de Bois, Eau Rose, and Baies have kept that signature black and white logo in the candle, er, spotlight for years. Now Diptyque is adding to its winning line-up with a home décor collection. Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the candle brand reached out to artisans to create a special capsule of tableware. It's a throwback to Diptyque's founders, artist Desmond Knox-Leet, interior designer Christiane Gautrot, and theatre craftsman Yves Coueslant set up on shop in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, who opened a tiny shop on 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in 1961. The idea was to create a treasure trove of their art and the beautiful objects they came across on their travels. Knox-Leet designed what would become their logo, an oval pattern they called Prétorien, after the shape of a soldier's shield and in 1968 they began producing candles and perfumes. The scents were an instant hit and the rest is history.
