On Wednesday, June 16, 1968, they lost at Atlanta, 1-0. After a day off, they failed to score in an entire weekend series at St. Louis, falling by scores of 1-0, 4-0 and 1-0.
They made 8 and 5 hits in the pair of 1-run losses. In the middle game, Steve Carlton surrendered only a fourth-inning, leadoff single to Glenn Beckert, after which Billy Williams immediately hit into a double play. The Cubs' only other runner was a hit batsman, as Carlton faced only 28 batters.
